You can actually do that with the Yugoslavian/Serbian models....
You can pull it back, but you can’t chamber a round. Maybe on the Yugo/Serb models, but not most.

I have the SVD version, purchased from a company in Russia. You can also thread the modern SSO RD-54 backpack onto the shoulder straps to complement the carrying capacity of the butt pack.

It's the opposite. This is the perfect rig for long term engagements and movements, where supply lines could be out of reach or even nonexistent. This kind of belt kit allows the soldier to sustain themselves for 48 hrs max (I estimate, in emergencies), and in conjunction with a large ruck sack, for weeks.

The Smiersh line is the best that can be used in green tactics. I am a soldier and I cannot imagine working on duty without a belt and suspenders. If you want to buy something similar with more personalization/another options, I recommend: Grey-shop, Miwo Military, Miwo Praszka, Baribal Poland, Currahee.

Good idea for extra weight but it’s still good to have mags on the chest in your work space
I never put anything on my front. Raises the body up when in the prone.
The German military issues something similar to anyone not issued with a protective vest. It‘s a little more barebones, it lacks the padding, however a gas mask bag, folding spade bag and canteen pouch can be attached as well. The magazine pouches also fit only one magazine.
So a modern alice kit for aks I think I like it. I gotta say I built an a1 style ar and when coupled with the alice kit I could see why want this smerch setup. It gives you everything u need nothing you don't and your quick. I use it hunting hogs on 3 day stalks and it just fucking rocks. I could definitely see how this system would be modified and upgraded into the ak platform. The type 56 rig for aks leaves a lot to be desired. I might have to get me one of these it just makes sense.
I heard that the Russians saw the US Alice system and basically copied it, developing smersh.

yes it is possible
New gen smershes are almost never used its outdated and almost all units now days will use the older ones if they do but that’s in regional units that got the older ones passed down and the old ones tend to have better quality due to contract orders meant for actual use not comercial use...
I think you don't see many units using it, because most modern operations are close quarters combat operating from a base.
Smersh is probably better suited for longer time in the field, for example reconnaissance operations. There's plenty of footage out there from units using it though, although most of it is pre 2010.

Yeah what you do is insert the stanag/pmag into the mag pouch... a good rule of thumb is that if a pouch is designed for ak magazines an m4 type will fit as well only issue you might encounter is extra space causing some rattle
