  • It is easy to learn how to use a buttpack if you merely think about possibilities and what you may need and when. Keep it light, keep it simple.

In my active duty days (60 years ago), the butt pack was intended for carrying a poncho, a disassembled C-ration and a compress bandage. Since we were mechanized infantry, I usually left my butt pack in my duffle bag, stowed in whatever vehicle we were traveling in.

3:39 Soldiers in Norway especially in the 80s 90s were issued an Enkeltmannspakke (One man package) which was a compression bandage, most soldiers carried it in their left breast pocket, if it was needed to be used by a fellow soldier on you if needed.

memories,,,back in the day (80's - 90's) I kept a pair of socks, a t-shirt, foot powder, one poncho, and a broken down component of an mre.....in the winter I would throw in the field jacket liner. worked great in the butt pack I didnt have to mess around as much with the ruck sack.

A buddy said that they'd use the newer ones as impromptu medic bags, while in Iraq. They loaded up a couple extra pressure dressings and tourniquets in a bag and ideally there'd be a bag in each truck of a convoy.

I reserve my bum bag (excuse me, "universal rear pouch") for my sleep system. I'm exclusively optimized for jungle conditions, so that means I won't be sleeping on the ground. A standard two-man hootchie, nylon hammock rating 150kg and 50m hootchie cord (rating Para 750). This keeps the bum bag compact, light and flexible and fits comfortably between my two main canteens. It is secured with ordinary ALICE clips in the usual manner.
My patrol pack is just as simple. It is a nylon 25L single pocket pouch that secures neatly in the ALICE belt grommet between the harness hooks using its own identical harness. The shoulder straps are mounted with press studs through the compass pouch strap and metal loop. They are then further secured to the harness shoulder pads with hootchie cord ties to prevent unwanted movement. This creates a very secure and lightweight system with enough storage for up to 48 hours.

Electrical tape never would stay in place for me. Before narrow duct tape was available I just snipped duct tape one inch wide and rolled a few feet around a Bic lighter. I always carried flat black nail polish. You could patch a tent, knock down a shiny spot on your weapon or gear and put it over your cut. I am a packrat. Carried a lot of stuff then, still carry a lot of stuff today.

just a note to fellow preppers,
These kind of Military carrying systems are ment for men that march in numbers and not for individuals.
Military Survival in general is not ment for preppers cause it relies that you are a hour walk away from a fully fitted military base with 200 men ready to help you.
You want to become a Snail. Carry a 3 day or even a 7 day pack on your back/body.

MY butt pack is a Vietnam era M-61, I guess the procedures for loading and use of my butt pack would be the same as the LC-2/ ALICE Butt Pack. Rather than stuffing the ponch into the butt pack I always kept mine lashed to the bottom of the M-56 or M-61 Field Pack I was issued before the Guard units I was a part of were issued Medium ALICE PACKs with Frames. My current LBE has the M-61 Field Pack (butt pack) on the belt.

The PRC 25/77 radio pack had two side straps with hooks to attach to the belt. There were also two hooks for the Buttpack.
There were Vietnamese packs used. I've seen scrounged x frame prototypes. Something like the smalker daypacks. One could attach two buttacks to the harness or mount one pack higher. In addition the sleeping bag " spaghetti" straps allowed carry. Those straps attached to the cloth los or D rings on front of the harness . There was a question about using one set of straps for pack and harness since they are about the same. My guess is prototypes with the main pack or equipment carried higher. The radio pack might also have been modified. But the answer still is the Buttpack on the side or slung. To be dropped along with main pack like quick release. Saw too many ftx movements to contact and assaults made up mountains under full load. One leaves a guard behind as acls have a slot for names.
The design was for packed to be dropped at a patrol base. The harness and Buttpack was then used for three days. That's three C Rations not 9.

Thank you ... good video ... I'm organizing my own belt system to include a butt pack however ... how do you access the "butt" pack easily ? ... it seems you have to remove the entire belt/shoulder strap system in order to access anything in side it ... unless you have a buddy along with you to reach in for it... I tend to hike alone so I wonder if it's worth it to have the butt pack on my belt system ...

The poncho and poncho liner attached to the bottom of the butt back for quick access. The bed roll (sleeping bag, mat, groundsheet/shelter half) had a removable carrier that attached to the suspenders on the upper back. Over all, the idea was to pack light and mobile with the existence load (clothing, hygiene gear, and sleep gear, emergency rations) carried in the existence load and the sustainment load carried by the logistics trains with daily/ twice a day resupply. In addition, storred in the units logistics trains/ storage points would be the soldiers duffel bag with the rest of their clothing that could be accessed as needed.
