    Hi Sam: I was lucky enough to see 10000 in 1963 before it was scrapped and I can tell you even in its stationary state it was well impressive. The history of the project between the LMS & English Electric is a milestone in the history of diesel development. Will you ever get to see it?

      @@SamsTrains In 1958 and 59 the newly introduced Transcontinental Double Ended Diesel had headlights at both ends as well as both the cabs illuminated. This lighting was a big selling point sixty years ago and so this model had pride of place on the 1959 Catalogue as shown by Oscar Paisely here : th-cam.com/video/DMjouDdH7SU/w-d-xo.html
      In the comments of this video there are some useful links of the prototype background of the model by me.
      The catlogue cover made it to the Pat Hammond first edition book too. The lighting, streamlining and bright blue and gold colour scheme helped this model to be the best selling Transcontinental model and even in the UK it was a top seller for a few years.
      When I was young it was always a bit special to turn off the room lights and have the R159 illuminate its path.
      Of course being based on the iconic Victorian Railways B class helped. The B class was introduced in 1952 and some examples are still running today. May have some connection to the LMS design from the same era but much improved.
      th-cam.com/video/5nHesKAxnpM/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/pCp2GlhYyPw/w-d-xo.html
      This models success had Triang seek out blue locomotives arising for this with the Blue Nellie, Blue class 31 as their first mainline diesel as well as the Blue Caledonian Single and Blue Pullman.

    I really like the look of this diesel unit!
    It really looks like if someone took the Alco diesel design, made it longer, and added a second cab. I really love the look of it, and it may just be me and some others but; I find black on British diesels very nice.

    • @jerrylankford4282
      @jerrylankford4282 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking it looked like an Erie-Built diesel, but with double cabs and thrice split windscreen. If the price ever goes down, I'd like one of this type to go with my fleet of EMD F Unit diesels.

    Hi Sam, great review!, I have two of these, one suffered from slipping connection inside the fly wheel on one of the drive bogies, adding a drop of super glue to the join between the fly-wheel and the connection rods surround solved the problem. They are both now perfect runners and pull anything

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very interesting Andrew, thanks for sharing - definitely doesn't sound like the motor is turning though... it hums loudly, just like a stalled motor would!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @andrewverden7965
      @andrewverden7965 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains Initially the loco just performed slowly no power, like yours and then as the friction on driving the front bogie increased it was preventing the motor from turning. If you remove the bogies, which are easily unscrewed you can see if the motor turns freely on its own and separately if the bogies can drive easily from the shaft alone. It turned out the smooth fitting collar inside the flywheel that holds the drive shaft had become loose and off center. I hope that helps you determine the problem. - regards Andrew

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should apologise to you Andrew - I did a video investigating the issue today, and that's exactly what the problem was - I was able to fix the problem by gluing the plastic shaft couplers into the flywheel.... what an absurd problem though. I can't understand how the designers thought that system would work? Mine was dripping with lubricant too, ensuring poor grip on those parts!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Lots of commenters pointing out how American the LMS 10000 looks. H.G. Ivatt was likely inspired by the EMD FT, which was the Diesel That Did It- the one that killed steam in the US. Other diesels existed before the FT and had nibbled at steam's margins, but the FT was the diesel that convinced American railroads that they could handle mainline trains with lower operating & labor costs. It was also very reliable & had a slick marketing & financing campaign from EMD's parent company General Motors to gin up sales. Not a bad starting point for Britain's pioneering diesel.

    • @SamsTrains

    I've just got one of these, beautiful looking loco, from an independent model shop in Aberystwyth. Problem I had is after half hour of running it started screaming from one of the bogies. Took it apart to find the loco had little to no lubrication, all sorted now though but not something I'd expect to be doing brand new out the box. The Dapol Western I also brought was the other extreme which I know you've commented on before 😆

    This by far one of the best looking Diesels you have. I was completely blown away when I saw the thumbnail. The black and silver looks so great. Idek that Diesels were made by the other railways pre-grouping. Shame they didn't go all out with this.

    Hi Sam, nicely balanced review as usual. I've got a pair of LMS twins but I've got them in the later lined Brunswick green livery. I can't agree with your comments regarding performance. Mine can slip the wheels quite easily if overloaded (load on the coupling wise..). I've not experienced any interruption in power supply due to oiling the bearings either and I've had them for quite a few years now and they have many hours use under their belts. You must remember though, these were very early diesels and were (relatively) underpowered. Initially they were rated at 1600hp and even the class 37 beat that with 1750hp on tap. You could say they're quite prototypical in being low powered. Also, they were regularly ran together. You might want to buy 10001 and run the two in multiple and see how they perform as a team LOL. Love the videos, keep it up.
    PS. I've been running model trains since the late 1970s and not once have I felt that a loco has required sprung buffers LOL. Not having a pop, just my opinion.

    I've been waiting for a review of this one. I mind mentioning this model sometime ago on one of your other videos. Such a shame about the mechanism and the price tag on such a beautiful model. My goodness that livery is staggering. Just hasn't aged well enough to justify the price; didn't know it dated back to 2011 but even then there's models as old as 2008 that remain unsurpassed. Still couldn't help but love it as there isn't very many early Diesel prototypes like this one; it would get attention wherever it goes on a layout.

    It's a real shame this loco didn't live up to the price, it is such a beatiful diesel, and a working replica is about to commence it's production. Much too pricey, but not a major loss I think. Is the torque issue fixable at all? Of course it's no excuse but it's always helpful if something is fixable if you're unhappy with it. Weight is the only way to go really - see if you can add some inside the loco body, wheel balancing weights do a good job! Also, if you're good with power tools, see if you can cut some of the heavy chassis out of the tender, which produces lots of drag (only applies to the Railroad ones, mind you!)
