    Sam's mum hears a bang on the attic floor... "Does Sam want a cup of tea... ahhh... no; he must have a loco on the express points!" Good job mukka. A fair review. Merry Xmas from Oz to you and your family. Gaz

    That's a magnificent looking loco from Bachmann Sam. It's good that they've added proper wheel bearings, all that's left now is for these major companies to produce reliable motors, and there will be many happy owners out there...Bob

    I have finally received mine from Rails on pre-order. Delay was due to Royal Mail dealing with four times the usual post for this time of year. Everyone ordering online of course due to Covid. I must admit i was chomping at the bit awaiting it's arrival as you can imagine. I am going to leave opening the box & relive those childhood memories of getting an engine on Xmas day. Your review has certainly made me even more excited & obviously can't wait to see it running on my layout. Thanks again Sam for another expertly reviewed model. Have a good Christmas!

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EFE range is meant to be their version of the Railroad range to compete with Hornby and the special commissions from the big dealers like Hattons. Unfortunately though I think they got lost with the pricing on the models on offer which are mostly old models from their own range or other manufacturers like Heljan and DJ models.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Do you really think the EFE rail range is their attempt at the Railroad range?! I think it would be.... except they're mostly priced *above and beyond* premium models!! ;D

      @bentullett6068 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains that's what Bachmann marketed it as. They said it was a rival for the cheaper models sold by Hattons and hornby unfortunately I think they missed the part about keeping them reasonably priced like the other manufacturers.

    Re: traction tires; my Roco Austrian Railways class 1020 electric has 6-axle drive, a strong 5-pole can motor, weighs 517 grammes, and has 4 traction tires. Continental European manufacturers are obsessed with traction tires, whether the models need them or not. Lovely although the livery sadly represents a short transitional period from the fully lined MR livery to the simplified livery circa 1907. The fully-lined livery up to 1907 included fully lined crimson lake wheels and boiler bands. With the simplified livery post 1907 came the new MR crest on the coal bunker and that large gilt numbers that carried into LMS days. This model also has the Deeley revised smokebox door over the more elegant original Johnson door.
    So if you're modelling the Midland railway in 1907 then this model is perfect!

    Hi Sam,
    Just got the S&DJR version with sound. Unlike the Bachmann 117, the speaker is of a good quality & provides a good level of sound.
    Unusually, for the firebox you have to use the F6 to open the firebox door, you then see just the red LED, when you press F9 you get the shovelling & then the red & yellow LEDs flicker.
    Great review & very fair.
    Have a great Xmas!

I had it pulling 1 coach and it struggled on the gradient both straight and curved with slipping.So I coupled it to 3 trucks plus brake van and that was ok 👍 The sounds are fantastic and the independent brake is excellent so I’ll live with the poor traction. Hi Sam. Quite beautiful. The 'gold' bell housing had a centre mould line, which is a shame (I didn't notice whether the boiler had one). While you were fitting the traction-tyred wheelset, it looked as though the driving wheels were not quartered; if so, why not? As I model in N gauge, I presume I cannot buy the four-wheeled coaches you ended up putting behind the 1P; what were they, please?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Paul - yes I was careful to show the mould line - didn't look too good did it? Nothing like that visible on the boiler though. Not sure about the quartering, that seemed fine to me, though the surface of the rubber didn't appear very smooth, hence the limping! The coaches were Hornby 4 wheel coaches, they produce them in all kinds of liveries.

    It seems hard to find trains this year that will ship, I had to go domestic and Use ebay I wanted some european stuff from reynaulds but I would have had to wait with my card on hold forever, I did manage to get some fleischmann wagons and a strange german Piko "western" set which includes a "americanized" German BR55 steam loco, Flat car, Boxcar, 2 Bavarian compartment coaches and a brake van all labeled with American railroad names. The set appears to be very old and I have never seen it before and it apparently runs and has the original 220v controller and a newer 120v transformer... It looked like A spaghetti western train So I had to have it, Shipping was a bit much and it wont arrive for another week so...

    Hi Sam, I normally love your reviews and I hate to be negative but, have you been at the "Christmas sherry"? you spent most of the review showing this stalling, wheel slipping and waddling its way round your layout. And the loose wire, and the none flicker fire box, and the thick plastic glass in the cab, and the wheel pick-ups that don't touch the wheels, and that price! Yes it looks great but is still very plastic in the detailing.
    I was one of the unlucky ones who got one, yes it looks fantastic BUT (insert an expletive between every word); It runs like a pig, stalls everywhere, wheel slips setting off at low speed, SQUEEK_SQUEEK_SQUEEKS round every curve, waddles like a drunk duck, dies on pretty much every point, trips my layout on every high speed point and other points randomly. If that's not enough it decouples on straights (go figure). Compared to the Dapol GWR Mogul this thing is just garbage. Putting mine up for sale on FleaBay ASAP. Merry Christmas dude and stay away from that sherry.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I think on balance my score was very fair. The stalling only took place on express points at insane slow speeds; I was careful to make it clear that this was a worse case scenario. With a bit of modification to the rear pickups, the issue would go away I'm sure. Performance with the optional tyres was much worse, but fortunately those were not fitted to the model as standard. If yours runs like that, definitely send it in for some free repairs, as is your right under warranty. As seen in my video though, the performance was fantastic overall!

    • @Simon-Davis
      @Simon-Davis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having picked mine up from my local shop the day these arrived, mine has been in use pretty much constantly all week. Of all of my locomotives, this one is the best performer by a considerable margin. Out of curiosity, what part of its performance wasn't good enough? If you expect it to perform like a Stanier pacific and pull a crack express up Shap, you're entirely missing the point of them. They're supposed to be a little potter about branchline engine, expected to drag one or two dilapidated coaches around at 20mph. The real things in BR days were only trusted with two coaches and the model manages four times that many on level track, so the models haulage is higher than is required. Even when they were used on the 'intra district' suburban services around Birmingham in the 1910s they ran with four coaches and occasionally pulled empty stock of two sets totalling eight empty coaches. I tested mine to eight bogie coaches and it would have taken more, but its only ever going to run with two. If you want an engine that was built to haul longer trains then the 1P is not the right engine for the task, that is the whole point, that is why it was given the 1P power classification. Electrically speaking yes, the bogie pickups might need a tweak to act more positively, mine didn't but some invariably will do. But I've had models from all of the main manufacturers that need pickup adjustment. I have a Hornby Peckett, another normally immaculate performer, which arrived with NONE of the pickups properly contacting the wheels. The 1P I have will pick up fully from each axle without fault, I can place it on tissue paper with just one axle on the rail, it doesn't matter which one and it will still crawl faultlessly. So, it pulls more than the real thing was designed to, and as long as the pickups are properly adjusted it runs better than almost every other model out there; you literally cannot get any better performance than that! ;)

    • @SuperJ333
      @SuperJ333 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well he didn't review yours, so I can only go on what I saw - it was poor with traction tyres, which could be a problem if you have inclines and would need them - and worst of all it was browning out on express points - and if that's the case it wouldn't even go over some of my points!
      In my view, small engines need as many pickups as possible, so to sell something for 150 quid when half the pickups aren't even positioned properly, is outrageous.
      If yours was OK, then this is down to Bachmann quality control, and I have found that to be poor with other models, but for this price it's not acceptable.
      And to say we have to take it apart and re-position the pickups is ridiculous - I wouldn't know how to do that, and even if I did, why should I have to?
      We don't all have perfect tracks, and I've not found small engines generally reliable, especially at slow speeds, so most of my 0-6-0's have tenders with tender pickups, and they run perfectly - although I have hopes that 'Rails' new Connect decoders will help brownout problems.
      To be honest I think model train fans put up with a lot on nonsense - if new cars were as poor as a lot of model locos are, the car manufacturer would go out of business.
      These things are expensive - there's no excuse for those that don't even work properly - and if I'd got what Sam got, and the bogey wheel pickups weren't even touching the wheels, and it stalled even on an express point, I wouldn't have given it 5 stars for performance - I'd have sent it back!

      Its your prerogative to write off a model based on an online video, but my advice is to go and handle models in a shop and see them running in person before passing judgement. Odds are, any issue can be sorted there and then, it saves a lot of disappointment and postal returns.
      Comparing this to new cars is effectively saying you don't need to do basic maintenance on the new car by the way. Factually incorrect. You need to do quite a lot to a new car to get the best out of them. When you buy a new car they will go over it with a finetooth comb before they give you the keys AND you are usually advised to bring it back for servicing quite soon after taking delivery of it, where they will continue all that tweaking and adjustment for you as the car breaks in. I've had to do clutch adjusts, brake adjusts, TPS tweaks and I always change the oil after the first 50 or so miles and check for metal shavings to make sure all is well with the crank and bearings on top of what the dealer recommends. I bet you've never encountered a brand new motorbike too...I've known people strip them completely down within the first week of ownership. New model locomotives are the same, they need a bit of tweaking to get the best out of them, ideally they also need that packing grease cleaning out and proper lubrication too. Its part and parcel of model railways, as is regular stripping down and maintenance as they age. Expecting otherwise is unrealistic.
      The main trouble is that when buying models online you can't check the model over that you are buying, which means you can't sort out the tweaking which is usually needed at point of purchase. That leaves the onus on the purchaser to do the tweaking necessary, and believe me I've had my fair share of new models that needed some work! My local model shop will do that kind of tweaking with ANY model they sell, new or second hand. I also do their repairs for the N Gauge stuff, being as my local shop is owned by my model club chairman and I run the N Gauge department ;) The vast majority of repairs are also usually down to dirty or poorly adjusted pickups, followed swiftly by damage caused by the owner poorly handling them. I will admit that I take advantage of people who return models like this, they'll send it back saying its a non runner and get a replacement, I'll make an offer before the shop sends it back to the manufacturer and every single time I've managed to sort the issue and obtained a bargain. Best case being an LGB garden railway locomotive worth £1500, the original buyer bought it, stripped it to clean the packing grease and put a keeper plate back on the wrong way around, which locked up the mechanism. They sent it back, got a refund and I bought it for £500, turned the keeper plate the correct way around and saved £1000 for my 30 seconds of trouble.
      Regarding the traction of this model, it will still take a realistic load of two coaches up a 1 in 50 incline. It will just about manage three actually, so again, the model does what was expected of the real thing without needing the traction tyre. If you want it to pull a crack express over a mountain, it will do that with the traction tyre fitted, but again, it will need some tinkering to get the best out of it.

      Yes, to be fair the performance was absolutely fine. I think the browning out was caused by the poorly adjusted pickups, which I think should be easy to fix. With the tyres fitted, the performance was poor, and I would not recommend it. Out of the box though, the performance here was much better than most other models!
