Stain and seal your parts BEFORE assembly. Save you a lot of work. No need for sprayer. Classic Bench, noice.

Awesome project and the design is on point! Quick question you give the overall height of approximately 30 inches but what is the height from the ground to the seat? Again great design!
What ever you want it to be.
Normally ground to seat is 16inch

Love the videos but there seems to be a theme of cutting them to short. This one(like others) we didnt even see you finish projuct after the spray coat? It would be nice to see the finsihed product in location.

I built this bench over the weekend. It looks great. My only complaint is that there is no lateral strength to prevent the end legs from shifting front to back. Was considering adding a cross-brace below the slats to give it a bit more stiffness but also don’t want to take away from the minimalist look.
This is exactly what I was wondering Peter. Humm....clear cedar is not cheap so hate to make this and have it shifting and hate to add to it for stability but take away from the look.

If the leg boxes are assembled using Titebond III (or similar), and properly sized screws, I would challenge you to rack just one of them front to rear. Adding the slats, including the back, provides some front/rear lateral support, just not at floor level.
For side to side racking, one could add an apron directly under the forward-most slat, and atop the back. This could be done cleanly without impacting the minimalistic lines.
At the end of the day, unless the neighborhood front lineman is doing full-speed belly flops onto the bench, this design will be perfectly sturdy for years of use.

Great project and like you I too like to build rather than buy. Only problem is Cedar is way to expensive here in London. Usually end up using what ever is going for free like old decking boards!
Thanks, honestly I think this build would look good with any wood type. It’s the slats that get most of the attention in my opinion.

Do you experience any warping of the slats on both ends? Being soft wood and outdoor, I am concerned it would happen sooner or later. I was thinking of adding a perpendicular strip on the end to keep the slats aligned but it would somehow ruin the look of this design which I like very much.
1 inch strips, but the 1/2" spacers dont look like is accurate. Maybe 1/4 at most?

Looks great. You mentioned the back is 30 inches high and the width is 25 inches, how high is the bench seat?
I wondered the same thing. If using 2x4s, the total height from ground to top of the seat slats is about half the 30" height of the back. So, maybe the height of the seat is 15" tall from ground to top of the seat, with the front, vertical leg being cut to about 10"-11". If you've built it and have other dimensions, I would love to modify my cut list.
I went with 15” height for the front 2x4 member then add 1.5” for the slat height so the seat ends up 16.5” off the ground - feels just right.
