I didn’t think you were ever gonna get back to building!! That’s the ONE thing that drew me and my husband to your channel. You made things simple and turned me into a builder. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep doing more builds… and waaaayyyyy less tool reviews.

As a professional carpenter, I would have done the math for spacing all the boards before I started. It would be in my list of notes I would make before I started to build. Example. Count number of full boards. Measure remaking space. Now divide left over space by number of joints between boards. Adjust this measurement as needed. There is your spacing.

    Howdy Mr. 731..
I was at work when you released this video but waited till this morning to watch it and I've got to say, it was difficult for me to keep passing over the video without clicking on it.
Nonetheless, I just got through watching it. I really enjoy watching these. One of the pleasures I have with all my decades of experience is the ability to watch something being built and understand exactly what's going on and why and then it's imprinted in my mind. That comes with experience.
With your videos, those with lesser experience that can't build something "in their mind" are able to follow and understand the "what for's and why's".
THAT Sir Matt is why so many miss you building, you're a good teacher.
Of everything you did with this bench, I would add 3 extra steps.
    1) Slightly rounding the top edges of the back support.
    2) That front board of the seat, where the crook of the knee will be, turning that front edge into a bull nose.
    3) And this one above all else "I" feel to be most important. That is to add epoxy to the bottom of the feet/legs. Simple cheap 5 minute epoxy works fine. This will keep the feet/legs from wicking up the water that gets under it, because even if sealer stain was used, it being end grain and sitting on the ground, floor, porch, that's gonna be the last area to dry after a rain but the FIRST area to wear out. Sealing it with epoxy ensures a longer life.
Fantastic video Mr. 731!!! Looking forward to the next one.

Matt, you are one of my favorite content creators on TH-cam. I am a would-be woodworker, and hope to have a full shop of my own one day. I'm also a paraplegic, and use a wheelchair every day. Woodworking and DIY projects often provide a bit more challenge for me, given I have to consider accessibility, balance, and agility a lot more than maybe the average woodworker. I'm always learning and thinking of ways to adapt where needed to the approach I'll need working from a chair, and I've learned a ton from your channel.
Regardless, I love how INCREDIBLY instructive and informative all your videos are, but also the fact that you're a humanitarian, Christian, and seem like just an overall great person. There are so many influences that we're exposed to every day on TH-cam and other platforms, it's just great to see you bringing all those qualities together in your videos.
Just wanted to say Thank You, and keep it up!

The reason is that's all I have (also a jigsaw-my only cutting tool, a belt sander, a mouse/detail sander which i ran out of sand paper for it them, and a one speed drill), so i would he nice to get some inspiration from a fella i look up to. Hope it happens, if so, thanks in advance!

I just finished building this bench. It looks great and is ultra sturdy. Made it as a Mother's day gift for my wife. Thanks for the plans. I purchased the whole outdoor bundle. Comment on the build itself: I used 1-1/4" star drive screws (it's all the big box store had in that length range) but found they stripped the wood very easily. I ended up using 1-3/4" instead.
I watched your pricing video but really can't find anything comparable to base a selling price on should I be asked how much. I have $125 in wood (Big Blue and Orange store's wood is horrible and used Big Green instead) wanted to know what you would price this bench at? I live in a southern state.

Great project and accessible for anyone! You could do the whole thing with a circular saw and an electric drill. For the back slats, you could have started in the very middle and worked to each side. That way the gap size doesn't matter, and the two ends just need trimming.

Two benches I built from construction redwood 20 rears ago have finally died. I made some repairs and repainted them ten years ago but constant exposure to the elements have finally taken their toll. I use what they call [construction] redwood because it has knots but they can be worked around while still retaining the resistance to rot as their clear counterparts that cost double the price. Cedar is also a good choice if redwood is not locally available.

Great build , really love this video. It's something even an entry level woodworker can do . And you can use different wood if you wanted to. I have the kreg pocket jig but since you bought the masca pocket jig I've been checking it out . I think it might be my next investment. Thanks again 😊

Man, it’s great going back and watching your old build videos and then watching your newer videos and seeing how far you’ve come. Your knowledge and experience as well as your tool selection (Ridgid vs Festool) has grown and it shows. Love the build. Keep up the good work and don’t stop sharing. As someone who started woodworking because of your videos, I greatly appreciate it!

Amy I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend! I did think it was really cool though the Matt had already decided on this project when your student asked you about in building a bench… It’s amazing how God works sometimes, even in the hardest of situations!
Matt, that was clever to set the front legs back an inch to have that reveal… It looks good!

Mat, you use regular lumber for outdoor furniture? I am wondering about long term especially up north (sorry, unfortunately, born there, but my daughter and brother are down south 👍) outdoor exposure. Thanks

I'd say easy $250 if you use common lumber like I did.

Thank you. I used common pine. Cedar, redwood, teak, white oak, and cypress are also good to use outdoors.

How are things in Monticello? I graduated UAM back in 2012. Heard it's on the up and up. I'm in Central AR now and haven't had a chance to go back in years. Used to watch movies at the Malco almost every weekend.

Matt wonderful do it yourself project, however, the material choice won't hold up for long outside instead use tamarack or larch if its available in the south, theres also more expensive cedar.

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  ปีที่แล้ว

I've built a lot of outdoor projects out of pine. Still looking good after several years. As long as it is properly cared for, it'll last a good long time. Yes, the more expensive woods will hold up longer, but pine is fine.

@@731Woodworks Here in the northeast tamarack is my go to wood for outdoor projects and its less expensive than pine more weather and rot resistant than cedar, I get it from the Amish which are everywhere great to deal with and they have saw mills and milling equipment all over the place.

Question if I could: When your garage door is close, what is your clearance between it and the front edge of your table saw? I’m trying to plan out placement of mine in a new place, and am wondering what is typical.
