That silly little strip of foam in the middle is the filter... I found with the ones I've fixed they really need the airbox assembled so they are tuned rich enough for full load. I also found that you get maybe half of them put out a good solid 800W and others are barely able to do half that no matter what you do. Happy to have sold off mine, good for task lighting but not for anything with a motor that you care about. Trying to get the voltage up just made the hertz get way too high and out of range. If you only use it for power tools you don’t need to but I run lights at the cabin and need them to not flicker cause it’s annoying so I bumped the rpm up to smooth out the engine. The sad thing is Harbor Freight used to sell a nearly identical generator that was blue. I had one that ran and ran for years. The generator part finally gave out eventually. It was the greatest for ice fishing or hunting camp, that thing would start in -10F in 2 pulls no problem. Now the only option is 4 stroke generators, and even with 0w-20 oil they will not start when it is below 0. The oil is just too thick to pull it over. 2 strokes are way better in the extreme cold.
jacking up the engine speed till you get the proper voltage is completely wrong. The speed should be 3750 RPMs which translates to 62.5 HZ no load. That is the fastest the engine should be running. Ideally you should be getting anywhere from 110 to 125 volts no load. If you are experiencing low voltage and this is a brushless type generator most likely, then I would suspect either a blown diode in the rotating rectifier assembly and/or a failed capacitor. The good news is the windings are still good in the power head. It can be fixed!
Best comment so far! Im betting this genny has a terrible sin wave as well. Not good for sensitive electronics. A fridge compressor or something protected by a wall wart (like a phone charger) should be fine.
Bassguitarist1985 knows his stuff! I have seen him on Kens Small Engine - Mr Mow It All channel in the live stream covering generators and He and James Condron have forgotten more about generators than most of us will ever know.
I think it was in the rubbish bin as they were banned from all tailgating events for the noise and exhaust fumes. They could have kept it if they used bacon scented 2T oil mix.
It's probably the little voltage regulator/capacitor box if somebody hasn't overloaded the windings in the gen head. I should have a dozen or so of those around in parts generators. Give me a yell if you want one, I'll be glad to donate a good one to the channel. I like what you do.
Excellent video as usual, but engine RPM on a generator is tuned for output frequency, not voltage. Voltage was fluctuating enough to warrant looking at brushes and field coil.
Was on my recycle route one morning around 9:30am...as luck would have it..we were ahead of the trash guys because their truck broke down. Just happened to see the power head of a Troybuilt string trimmer sticking out of a new looking Troybuilt string trimmer box... Being a curious little guy...I stopped...went to the box...and to my amazement...there was a brand new trimmer in the box. Took it home and for a few weeks it sat before I got a chance to look at it...when I did... I noticed there was something dark in the fuel tank...it was straight two cycle oil. I drained it and put the dino-cocktail in and gave a few tugs...fired right up. I've had it for about seven years now...best trimmer I never bought. I've never bought a leaf blower, chain saw,or weed eater...or any other type of outdoor type of tool sence I've been in the trash business... Love you guys and what you do..keep up the awesome job.
I have the older version called the Storm Cat. I love it, it powers anything 700 watts or less. I loaned it to my Mother during a power outage caused by a hurricane. Mom used it to power her mini fridge. It's still kicking.
It's just a guess but I think that increasing the RPM also changes the Hertz. If I had to guess that generator probably has brushes that are bad or stuck in the brush holders.
I have three of these, they work great for power failures. One of them pushed the crank seal out on the gen side, I replaced the seal while it was apart and it's running great. I agree if voltage is low but frequency is correct, the capacitor is probably bad.
Fricken HILARIOUS from start to finish!!! Thanks, Taryl, got my Monday morning off to a great start. And your rendition of 'Mustie's Comin' ' is spot-on!!
A common problem with those generators is the outer armature bearing spinning in the housing. It allows the armature to run off balance and the slipring brushes are then allowed to bounce off the slipring. it causes low voltage output and erratic poor regulation. It's and easy fix with some Loctite shaft fit on the bearing, or replace it if it's worn excessively.
I found one of those Tailgator generators on the side of the road. Fixed it in a video a few years ago and it is still working. Wasn't hard to fix. Well worth the time to fix it.
I sure miss these "Tiny" Generators. Great for camping and late-night outdoor entertaining! Plus you can easily redirect the running/exhaust noise behind a thick Shrub or peice of plywood (as long as the exhaust faces out)!
Hey Taryl the man with the "CoalGate" smile ,those generators are great at the campground, they keep the skeeters away and everybody else with doing the 2 stroke smoke. Just don't pay in advance because they'll be kicking you out too.😅
I know it has become common for folks to say 2 cycle engine and I’m OK with that. What bugs me, though, is that manufacturers write it on the product or box. It is a cycle engine. Engines can complete the cycle in 2 strokes or in 4 strokes. But they are not 2 cycle or 4 cycle engines. Intake, compression, combustion, exhaust (suck, squeeze, bang, blow) Is the cycle. Great video. Love the channel. Just my pet peeve for the day.
Someone else pointed out that the engine RPM is set to give a 60 hz frequency output. When you raised the RPM the voltage was still bouncing all over the place. Yeah someone could have overloaded it but I would first check out the capacitor on the generator first before trashing it. The capacitor has two functions; it induces voltage into the rotor as well as helps regulate the output voltage and a faulty capacitor or if by chance it has lost a good connection it will give you the exact symptoms you are seeing with the generator.
I found one of those on the shore of Lk. Roosevelt two years ago. Gave it to my neighbor who got it running and now uses it for his fridge during power outages.
Those specific generators, clones of an original yamaha, have a 10 mcF (for 230V models) motor capacitor on the exciter winding that sets the output voltage. Motor should or course run at 3600 rpm. When that cap loses capacitance, the voltage deteriorates like that. This is not a generator with an AVR where you can set voltage on a potentiometer. No brushes on the rotor, as it is a self-exciting type...
How in the hell does Taryl not have atleast a million viewers. His show is hilarious and very informative. I could easily see this show become of a TV show of yesteryear. Id rather have Taryl Dactyl be a celebrity then some of the lame brains they put out these days. Taryl would give Tim the tool man a run for his money.
this is better comedy than most of what is comin out of, "Hollywood" these days, the scripts and camera work, make-up/props are evolving...tanks for sharing your content but not the production cost!
Every time Ronnie makes an appearance it put the video into Academy Award level! Mustie ! ? "Eli's Comming". For years I wondered who Mr. Cameraman was. I always thought it was "Slippers". The mystery has NOW been solved when I heard his voice! It wasn't Slippers.
I have the version before that one with the red fuel tank. While I would never use it to power electronics, it's a great little generator for lights and power tools. A circular saw is too much for it though.
I’m not sure about this gen, but you need to bring the RPM’s back to 3600 and see if it has an AVR that can be adjusted to the proper voltage or it could have a Capacitor that needs to be replaced so it puts out the proper voltage. The Hz should be 60 to 61.5 at no load
I've got one of these, had it for years. Its blue but exactly the same. Rated 900 running watts but, funny enough, they all have a range of ratings. Have seen some at high as 1200w, lol. I use it to run my sump pump during rainy outages. Run TruFuel in it and it AWAYS starts. Gives me time to decide if the outage will be long enough to fire up the big genset. Ugly power, but the sump pump don't care. Also, need to replace the cheap chinese plug with an NGK...makes a world of difference.
Listen Well, you COULD look into the electronics part of this generator. Life doesn't stop at the exhaust pipe. Maybe a volt meter, current meter...cheap oscilloscope to view the output sine wave. Check for burned circuit parts, bad connections, bad wires. Its usually simple stuff. Dang man, find somebody that knows about electronics and see if you can learn something else. When I was young (15 in 1976) and somebody gave me something to fix, it was already broken so I knew I could not make it worse, so I took it apart and looked at stuff. Amazing how many things I fixed without knowing how they worked. After all, WE are here to LEARN from you, Mr. Taryl! I would take that thing apart so fast and roll my eyeballs around on it just to see what it looked like! - Retired Software Engineer 10.12.2022
Probably an issue with the voltage regulator, engine seems OK after your dinosaur cocktail. I think the baby just had a little head cold 🙂 I think the best you might get out of it is 6 or 700 watts RMS , ok for a fan and some lights . If your juice is out and that's all you got, its still a great little generator.
Don't know if anyone else has said anything but I believe you have to adjust the screw under 95% full load. You cant just adjust it with no load. Also its hard to tell but the filter should be slotted in already. Airflow is drawn from the left side, goes through the filter then enters the carb on the right. Filter designs vary by models/makes
I was out mowing a few minutes ago and went to go park it for the year and it had no brakes or a brake safety switch, it's a 1996 john deere 325 54 inch deck it had awesome brakes before, all the linkages I seen were moving and had little to no play in them, trans fluid is clean, no metal, runs drives and cuts still with no issues, had to jump the solenoid, asking for help, with a diagram or someone that knows the transmission in and out... trans pulls great still...
Oh my that was funny. I love Mustie. The very next video I watched started with Mustie pulled over picking up garbage. Holy crap my sides hurt. Thank you.
Horror Fright and Halloween. Great combo 😂. The Predator generators are at least good. Yup, gotta watch what you get at Horror Fright. Much of their stuff is complete junk. Some is good. Some guys love it because their junk is cheap... Makes no sense.
You guys put so much work and effort into making these videos! You should have over 1M subscribers, I know you definitely deserve it!! The TH-cam algorithm is so mean and unfair sometimes! 😤😠
Their is a small screw on the regulator assymbly that adjust the voltage. it's on back of the generator motor. the engine speed will only increase the hrtz from about 50 to 75 the 3300 rpm is the set for 60 hrtz. the generator is fine just adjust the regulator screw or replace regulator if it won't adjust.
Bass guitarist1985 is on the money. I bet this is a brushed gen end and the slip rings are full of carbon from the brushes. A lot of guys don’t realize that Hz and Rpm are synchronous, just divide the RPM by the number of poles in the gen end to get 60Hz. (3600rpm gen is a 6 pole gen) Small generators need to be adjusted higher 62.5hz to compensate for governor droop due to the small engine’s output not being able to easily compensate for loading easily.
@@petersack5074 I made a video on one of these a long time ago. Almost new, but ruined by a mouse. They are a good generator for the price. Just dirty power as they are brushless.

@@tnekkc probably there's something wrong on the generator side of it and Taryl doesn't know that so good. Others suggest it may be a capacitor or something. It not putting out 120V is a symptom of an issue.
I've worked on one of those and it performed ok. Also have seen other videos with good reviews, so there's probably something wrong with the generator part. Might still be worth looking at. I also managed to find parts on ebay for these too.
I have one of these. ran great and it was able to power my refrigerator during a power outage. it used to leak gas out the carbitrator bad though. I ordered a replacement on ebay and installed it but haven't tried to start it up yet.
I have that generator one of the red ones..watch the muffler . Mine wouldnt run past idle so after checking almost every possible problem I notice there was restricted flow out of the exhaust. They over stuffed the muffler with fiberglass which mixed with the oily exhaust ended up plugging it up. Cut that muffler off welded on a takeoff muffler from a 196cc chonda and BINGO it runs fine.

@halcampbell1384 it's probably a bad capacitor. 1 of 2 still works...
I have one the exact same model it was given to me by a friend and I say it's well worth it it has been an absolute blessing
Two cycle Mick's mowers.. ta for the shout out mate .. I fixed one of these and on the day I sold it the fuel tap snapped..
Mick: good to see you commenting on Mick’s Mix! Tell Reilly Boy we say hi from Flint Michigan

jacking up the engine speed till you get the proper voltage is completely wrong.
@@haneyoakie14 thank you sir!!
I would guess a bad capacitor, on this particular piece of equipment
I agree. That silicone was on there for a reason so you wouldn't jump to the idler first but instead check diodes and capacitor
I think it was in the rubbish bin as they were banned from all tailgating events for the noise and exhaust fumes. They could have kept it if they used bacon scented 2T oil mix.
Mmmmm Bacon……
It's probably the little voltage regulator/capacitor box if somebody hasn't overloaded the windings in the gen head. I should have a dozen or so of those around in parts generators. Give me a yell if you want one, I'll be glad to donate a good one to the channel. I like what you do.
Excellent video as usual, but engine RPM on a generator is tuned for output frequency, not voltage. Voltage was fluctuating enough to warrant looking at brushes and field coil.
its a brushless unit
Brushless, Voltage variable until under load, set frequency to 62-63 hz.
Great job as always. Mustie1 is great to. Learned alot from James Condon on generators.
👍 on James Condon,he gets some real basket case generators for fixing
Yup, James is my go to guy for generator info. 👍🔧
It's just a guess but I think that increasing the RPM also changes the Hertz. If I had to guess that generator probably has brushes that are bad or stuck in the brush holders.
More likely a weak capacitor…..
Yeah it's brushless, bad cap.
Cameraman does a great job! Love the sound effects too! ☺️
Well said
i like the sound effect when Taryl says "seal"
Who is the cameraman?
A common problem with those generators is the outer armature bearing spinning in the housing. It allows the armature to run off balance and the slipring brushes
are then allowed to bounce off the slipring. it causes low voltage output and erratic poor regulation. It's and easy fix with some Loctite shaft fit on the bearing, or replace
it if it's worn excessively.
Haha, Love the "Mustie's Coming" tune. I also loved the Halloween theme this week.
I found one of those Tailgator generators on the side of the road. Fixed it in a video a few years ago and it is still working. Wasn't hard to fix. Well worth the time to fix it.
How’s your sweet doggie?
you know you have made it when a theme song is written on you,
Mustie1 you are correct, all of y'all are great to watch and bring a great information for a dying art!!
The bad flux capacitor in the generator is causing low output voltage.
one of my favorite channels on the youtubes. always interesting and decent low budget acting too
Mustie needs to make a mug design or two so you both can drain fluids into each other's mugs lol🤣
Warranty is fine taryl, that high end sponge in the middle was the air filter 😂.
Taryl fixes ALLMOST everything, great video as always
How in the hell does Taryl not have atleast a million viewers. His show is hilarious and very informative. I could easily see this show become of a TV show of yesteryear. Id rather have Taryl Dactyl be a celebrity then some of the lame brains they put out these days. Taryl would give Tim the tool man a run for his money.
I can just hear that Mustie1 laugh as he's seeing this. Lol.
Take another look, it has an air filter. Slides in left of the carb.
this is better comedy than most of what is comin out of, "Hollywood" these days, the scripts and camera work, make-up/props are evolving...tanks for sharing your content but not the production cost!
I look forward to Sunday's with Taryl. BTW- loved your crooning version of "Eli's Coming." 😃
Send that little jenny over to James Condon's channel and let him give it a try! You small engine guys rock!
I just fixed one of these for one of the guys I work with-the carbetrator was gummed up-it worked pretty good once I got it back together!
Every time Ronnie makes an appearance it put the video into Academy Award level!
Mustie ! ? "Eli's Comming".
For years I wondered who Mr. Cameraman was. I always thought it was "Slippers". The mystery has NOW
been solved when I heard his voice! It wasn't Slippers.
Hope Mustie sees this.....he just finished getting a junk VW running. 🤣
Junk is an understatement.
Great video! Awesome on you finding the small genny. the color of the old gas looks like old type varnish that you finish wood furniture with.
I have the version before that one with the red fuel tank. While I would never use it to power electronics, it's a great little generator for lights and power tools. A circular saw is too much for it though.
I have one just like that. Got mine running… the usual .. bad carburetor. Good little gen to have.
We need a Halloween special. Like a 30 minute long skit. Would be excellent family fun. 👍
I have one. Mine still runs like new. That's probably why I take care of my stuff
Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) could need adjusting or replaced
love the “Mustie1” commentary, your both fantastic
The funny thing is that little piece of foam is the air filter🤣
Another excellent Halloween video from Taryl Fixes All and The Grass Rats Garage 👍👍
Great job! always get a kick out of you guys. Big fan from Canada
Listen
Well, you COULD look into the electronics part of this generator.
Life doesn't stop at the exhaust pipe.
Maybe a volt meter, current meter...cheap oscilloscope
to view the output sine wave.
Check for burned circuit parts, bad connections, bad wires.
Its usually simple stuff.
Dang man, find somebody that knows about electronics
and see if you can learn something else.
When I was young (15 in 1976) and somebody gave me something
to fix, it was already broken so I knew I could not make it worse,
so I took it apart and looked at stuff.
Amazing how many things I fixed without knowing how they worked.
After all, WE are here to LEARN from you, Mr. Taryl!
I would take that thing apart so fast and roll
my eyeballs around on it just to see what it looked like!

I have the same one, it runs really well
Probably an issue with the voltage regulator, engine seems OK after your dinosaur cocktail. I think the baby just had a little head cold 🙂 I think the best you might get out of it is 6 or 700 watts RMS , ok for a fan and some lights . If your juice is out and that's all you got, its still a great little generator.
"Never drink gasoline of any kind!"
He knows his audience!
Hi Taryl, thanks for the great video. Just wondering how you get rid of all the bad gas’s you collect? Cheers Ian
You always make it fun! Spooky, but fun!
Oh my that was funny. I love Mustie. The very next video I watched started with Mustie pulled over picking up garbage. Holy crap my sides hurt. Thank you.
Mustie's Coming. My Lawn Mower ran out of gas, I came back to fill it and it was gone ! 😆🤣
Your skits are so ridiculous they're hilarious. I'm guilty of skipping ahead to catch the ending. 😁
Horror Fright and Halloween. Great combo 😂.
The Predator generators are at least good. Yup, gotta watch what you get at Horror Fright. Much of their stuff is complete junk. Some is good. Some guys love it because their junk is cheap... Makes no sense.
Great video! Couldn't wait for the thrilling ending. Oh BTW, what's going on with the Stilch chainsaw under your bench?
You guys put so much work and effort into making these videos! You should have over 1M subscribers, I know you definitely deserve it!! The TH-cam algorithm is so mean and unfair sometimes! 😤😠
Good one guys, not really scary till Taryl started singing😱, i jumped straight to the end did the generator get fixed🎶🤣
Love opening skit can't wait til the end
I wonder what James would say about it since he's the generator expert
Probly, too basic and simple, for him. ha
@@petersack5074 No, but he would have an old parts donor machine so he could fix it without spending any money.
@@petersack5074 I made a video on one of these a long time ago. Almost new, but ruined by a mouse. They are a good generator for the price. Just dirty power as they are brushless.
On most generators the idle will raise when an electric load is applied and lower when removed. I'm wondering if that's something else wrong with this generator.🤔 Motor might be able to be salvaged.
That usually applies to inverter generators. Most cheap generators like this one are set to 50 or 60hz and the rpm should be steady.
Great job Taryl and crew.
Y’all scared my wife when the bad guy took slippers she literally jumped hahahaha….seriously though funny skits and the good info equals awesome content
I had one of those generators, I got it from hobo freight. I used it to run a circular saw to cut plywood at hunting camp.
i have one runs great.. u need to keep it choked til it warms up(good couple minutes)or else it will turn off right away and the air filter is the black foam
Awesome skit, yeah that one would definitely make for a paper weight…
The voltage dropped at one point while the RPM was being increased. I think the generator running at the right frequency is important.
Probably there is a field winding connection that is broken.
@@tnekkc probably there's something wrong on the generator side of it and Taryl doesn't know that so good. Others suggest it may be a capacitor or something. It not putting out 120V is a symptom of an issue.
Muskies COMING yeah let’s go fishing 🎣 PS you Voided the warranty LOL
Smart video. Taryl stays away from adjusting the electrics.
Looks like Ronnie is getting ripped today..lol.
Capacitor
Oh, I am about pissing my pants !
"Yeah, was that worth 10 dollars? We got ripped off again". hehe
I love these skits..... seriously
Nice video guys but I can't believe you actually admitted you know Mick, you have my sympathy. 🤣🤣
It would have been awesome if Mustie made a cameo
I’m sure he’ll be posting soon, after he finishes laughing his arse off. I’ve read a few of his comments here. 👍
Great way start sunday off
