So a 10 inch round pot will accommodate four plants? I'm having a hard time finding information on spacing in pots, most everything I come across is for planting in the ground. Thanks!
For this variety (dwarf) you can have 4 plants, 4-5 inch apart in a 10 inch pot. The key for planting in pots is to select seed of "container friendly" or like this video "dwarf" varieties. These plants once matured, do not take much space like plants from normal seeds. I do a lot of container gardening and find it as practical/joyful as gardening in ground. Thank you for your clear and concise instructions. Quick question: when and how often should I start to fertilize, and what should I use as fertilizer? Also, do you pinch the main stem just the once or is this a regular process? A million thanks for a great tutorial!
Glad you liked the video. You can start fertilizing when first flower buds appear or about one week after planting. Feed with any flower fertilizer. It is better if fertilizer has a lower nitrogen or N in N-P-K ratio and higher in P to promote more flowers, such as 4-6-2, or 5-10-10. Follow the instruction on the bag on how often to fertilize, in containers usually more often about every 2-3 weeks. And you just need to pinch once. I have tried marigolds many times over the years decades in fact, and can’t seem to get them to live. I’ve always heard they’re good to plant your garden to attract pollinators and help prevent insects from feeding on your vegetables. But it seems as soon as I plant mine in the ground, they start to die.
Sorry to hear that. Looks like something in the soil is damaging the roots (a fungal disease). Either you can direct sow seeds in ground, or repot seedling in larger pots until they are well grown and can handle the effecting disease better. Hope you have a better results next time. Thank you for visiting!
I kept them in a shed like room in my backyard(at about room temperature). Until seeds germinate, I didn't expose them to direct sunlight, but as soon as they popped up, I moved them to a part sun location. Thank you very much for visiting!
I usually don't use grow lights. I keep my seed tray inside or in a shed like room in my back yard, but as soon as they sprout, I move them outside to 4-6 hours of early morning sun. If it is cold outside, keep them in a protected space such as cod frame or a clear storage tote. If night temperature drops below 50F (10C), you can bring them inside at nights. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
Transplanting gives you a head start by 4-6 weeks before your frost date. You sure can direct sow marigold once all danger of frost passed. Thank you for your comment!
Question! Did you sow these indoors or out? I started Marigolds from seed this year and was maybe too precious with them. I put them under grow lights and on heat mats and they didn't do much at all. :(
it is ok to keep seed tray inside up to the point when seeds sprout, . But as soon as they pop out, you need to provide light. Otherwise they will be leggy and won't grow well. I generally don't use grow lights. My seed trays are outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
Hello, it has been 3 days since I planted my marigold seeds but I see no signs of germination. Should I wait for a few more days or perhaps, there is something wrong with my routine? Thank you in advance.
Hello. Depending on the variety it may take 7 to 10 day for seeds to germinate. So I would suggest to wait few more days. Hope they will germinate successfully. happy growing and thank you for getting in touch!

Thank you for the information. Love the video. I am curious why you didn't have one seed per pot. Also, is it possible to plant the seeds directly in the ground? What would happen if I just scattered some seeds on the ground?
So glad you love the video! sowing 2 seeds increases the germination rate. You can certainly direct sow them in pots too. Starting seeds in seeds pots just gives you more control of the germination and the growing conditions (temperature, light,...). And scattering seeds is possible and I have done that too. You may start them directly too. I suggest to sow extra seeds for a better germination rate. I usually don't have issues when transplanting marigold, maybe there is an issue with the soil? Hope you will have a better results next time. Thanks for visiting.

Early last month, (September 2023) I planted 200 seeds from this Summers 2023 marigolds and none of them germinated. So I am assuming from this that the seeds need to go through a winter phase of some sort before they are mature enough to germinate. Or might there be some other reason none of them germinated you know of? I potted them just as you did and followed all your steps. ?????????
It is hard to tell without seeing. It might be that you got bad batch of seeds, or if you collected seeds yourself they were not pollinated properly. Marigolds seeds usually have good germination rates and you should not have that much problem with it. Hope you have a better results next time and thanks for visiting.
Yes, I collected them from my on crop of marigolds so they must not have been pollinated. Is there a way to know if they have been pollinated or not? Thanks for responding.
Not really. If you don't see much of active pollinators such as bees around the plants, then most probably they won't get pollinated. @@davidcornell9167
I have already planted 2 batches of French Marigold, but none have germinated. I have tried the wet tissue method, but still no luck. I wonder if I got a bad set of seeds 😢
Yes, most probably it is the seed batch which is not unusual. Marigolds are one of the easiest to germinate and I suggest to start over with different varieties. Good luck and thank you for visiting!
Could you tell us what the benefits of this plant for humans or nature please? Of course they are so beautiful! But I heard that they are good for some health problems. As well, I want to plant more flowers for bees
Marigolds can attract pollinators as well as ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, parasitic mini-wasps and other predatory insects that will eat aphids and other damaging pests. Marigolds also have a very strong scent which confuses bugs like tomato hornworms, cabbage moths, and beetles so they don't attack your vegetables. With their lovely blooms your garden will look amazing too. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment!.
Thank you for this wonderful video! When waiting to germinate do they have to be in dark or require light, also , at a specific temperature, can I put them on top of the frig? Thank you!
up to the point when they sprout, it is ok to put them on top of the fridge. But as soon as they are out, you need to provide light. Otherwise they will be leggy and won't grow well. So it is important to keep an eye on them. Thank you for your comment and happy growing!
Nothing to worry, once you plant them they will develop strong roots, specially if you pinch them so the energy goes to roots. Happy gardening and thank you for your comment!

How often do you water them after the first watering and how much sun do they need ? I planted mine 30 days ago just like you showed and still waiting for them to germinate 😢
You just need to keep the seed mix moist, I usually water only once or twice before seeds germinate. Marigold seeds are pretty quick to germinate and 30 days is not normal. So most probably you got a bad batch of seeds (which is very normal with the seeds). I suggest either start a new set, or get a new packet of seeds (different brand). I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
for me i got the queen sophia type took only a 1 week and 2 days of indoor planting to germinate i dont have a grow light so i use a lamp on THE BRIGTEST SETTING and oh it is bright and somtimes put it in natural sunlight and came back from school 3 of the seeds started germnating but i dont have this type but do make a vid on the Marigold-queen sophia
Depends how hot it gets. The ones in containers, specially terracotta, I watered daily. If planted in ground like borders, you can water less often. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Thank you for visiting.
It depends on the weather. You can plant seedlings outdoors when temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C) at nights. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!
Depending on the weather/temperature or the variety, seeds may take longer to germinate. Usually it takes 5-10 days to germinate. Best guide is the timeframe provided on the seed packet. Thanks for visiting.
Did you sow seeds not too deep (1/4")? Did you keep soil moist and at 70-80F? If yes, then it is possible that you just got a bad batch of seeds, which is very normal when growing plants from seed. I suggest to start with a new seed packet, preferably from a different brand. If planted at the above conditions, it should n't be hard to germinate. Hope you have a better results next time. Happy growing!
@@TowardGarden I did all of above, seeds were gathered from plant I have already. They were left to dry then I collected seeds. I'm now on my second try fingers crossed 👍. Thanks for the advice ☺️
Hello, there can be few reasons for that. If soil is soggy and not well-draining, it will get root-rot and not bloom. Also, marigolds grow and produce flowers best in a sunny location. Make sure they are exposed to full sunlight. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!
Simple, easy, helpful....BUT! I wouldn’t drag the tiny seedlings out of their first pots by holding them by their tender stems! Better to get in under the seedlings and lift them up....
I agree with you, and I do the same when seedlings are tiny and at early stages. These seedlings were too strong and the roots were so dense, as you can see they were safe and sound. I really appreciate your feedback! And thank you so much for your comment!
It may be due to many reasons, but if you followed same process, then it is possible that you just got a bad batch of seeds, which is very normal when growing plants from seed. I suggest to start with a new seed packet, preferably from a different brand. If planted at the right conditions, it shouldn't be hard to germinate. Hope you have a better results next time. Happy growing!
Good video but I will take issue with one aspect. Sowing 2 seeds per pot is wasteful and the subsequent thinning disturbs the roots of the remaining seedling. If for example you want 20 plants then, using your method, you plant 40 seeds and thin out what you don't need. If I want 20 plants then given that the germination rate is likely to be around 80% I plant 25 seeds in 25 pots and any excess over 20 I will find a spare corner for somewhere. I have used 25 seeds and you have used 40.
Thank you for sharing. I completely understand your concern. I tried to show in the video that the thinned seedlings can be saved and planted separately. I tend to be on the safe side and start seeds extra rather than missing the season because of a bad germination rate. As you shared, there are many other ways to gardening and I just show what works beast for me. Thank you very much for visiting and for your feedback!
Thank you! Wish I had watched this video when I planted Marigolds from seed. I planted them mid-July, and they keep getting taller, but no flowers are being produced. I didn't know about pinching something off :/
Spacing is also very important which wasn't addressed. They should be 4-6 inches apart. Also the fertilizer type which wasn't addressed in the video but was in the comments is important. Needs low nitrogen. They gave examples in the comment with their response.
Thanks!

@@davidcornell9167
thanks for responding @@TowardGarden
Thank you for this wonderful video..
So glad you liked it! Thank you so much for your comment!
@Toward Garden Thank you! 🤗
Enjoyed video .did seeds for the first time but my roots don’t look as thick as yours
Nothing to worry, once you plant them they will develop strong roots, specially if you pinch them so the energy goes to roots. Happy gardening and thank you for your comment!
Where do you leave your plants to germinate? Indoors or outdoors?
Love your videos btw!
I have a shed like room in my backyard where I keep my seed trays until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. I hope this helps and thank you so much for the comment!
@@TowardGarden I collected the seeds from my dying marigolds . Could I have collected them wrongly and they are all dead ?
Maybe they were not pollinated properly or got damaged. Marigold seeds are widely available, maybe get a packet while trying your own.
Great video!

for me i got the queen sophia type took only a 1 week and 2 days of indoor planting to germinate i dont have a grow light so i use a lamp on THE BRIGTEST SETTING and oh it is bright and somtimes put it in natural sunlight and came back from school 3 of the seeds started germnating but i dont have this type but do make a vid on the Marigold-queen sophia
They are very similar, just different colors. Glad your plants are growing great. happy growing and thank you so much for sharing!
How often do i water them?
Depends how hot it gets. The ones in containers, specially terracotta, I watered daily. If planted in ground like borders, you can water less often. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Thank you for visiting.
Beautiful flower s
Thank you very much for your comment!
Awesome video .. I started my seeds today, is it to early?😢
It depends on the weather. You can plant seedlings outdoors when temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C) at nights. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!
My favorite flower😊
They are indeed beautiful flowers. Thank you so much for your comment!
Mine is already in day 5... the seeds are still sleeping. HELP :(
Depending on the weather/temperature or the variety, seeds may take longer to germinate. Usually it takes 5-10 days to germinate. Best guide is the timeframe provided on the seed packet. Thanks for visiting.
Great ❤❤❤

Where are you from ❤❤
I am in California zone 9b. Thanks of visiting.
So that means you are from USA. Right?
@@Thehumblesistersandfriends2024 Yes, I am in California, USA.
ok Thanks@@TowardGarden
I've sowed this way and no germination, what am I doing wrong 🥴

सर मेने भी गेंद के बीज से पोधे तयार किये हे लेकिन अभी तक फुल नही आये
My marigold seeds never germinated. Same process as yours…
Happy growing!
great tunes
Thank you so much for your comment!
Thank you.
Thank you very much for watching!
I didn't know about pinching something off :/
Yes, and you can pinch at different stages and few times so plants get more bushy and produce more flowers. Thank you very much for your comment!
Spacing is also very important which wasn't addressed. They should be 4-6 inches apart. Also the fertilizer type which wasn't addressed in the video but was in the comments is important. Needs low nitrogen. They gave examples in the comment with their response.
💚👍🏻
Thank you so much!
