Hello I’m in 9b and marigolds grow so easy and gorgeous here. I would love to know how many different types of marigolds there are. Great video and learned a lot. Thank You.
Mosquitos brought me here. I'm currently in the "impossible" process of controlling the mosquitos in my neighborhood. I don't know this women, but I love this women.
This is quite possibly the best "1st video" I've ever watched when looking in to new plants for my garden. The amount of info, and the way you presented it was perfect. What a great "Teacher" you make.
I have some Aztec Marigolds, they are about 2 ft talk, & are the colours of a beautiful sunset. I been sharing SEEDs with friends and family. I save SEEDs from a lot of my garden plants.
Same! I never found interest in them. Took my 5 yr old to the nursery, and she picked 2 varieties. 🙄 Well, heck if they aren't my favorite flower now!!! We have the Safari and African Tiger varieties. What delightful flowers.
Very helpful! Thanks for the video. I have a packet of seeds that I want to give the best chance of growth and I like the method and tips you provide in this video!
I just planted some French marigolds in my garden. I am now watching your video and immediately went outside and gave them a lot more water. This video is just fantastic. Incredibly informative, thank you. I live up in the central coast of California and my spouse is concerned that the marigolds are going to get way too much rain and will start to mold and rot. I live in zone 9b. Could that be true?
It depends on your soil, but it's true they don't want to be moist all the time. If you have well-draining soil (or plant them in raised beds where you can control the soil), you'll be fine.
Delighted to come across this informative video! Hope you can answer my Q, i heard somewhere that marigolds don't like to be moved. I wanted to move established plants (that have been growing happily in pots & fabric grow bags all summer) into the ground. Can i do this, now in August? Can one do this, say mid-summer? Thanks
Very glad I found your channel and this video. Super helpful. Really like you sharing the reasoning behind doing things a certain way as well. As a beginner gardener, my grown from seeds marigolds are doing super great (not blooming yet) and they MUST be very easy to grow as I am the Jon Snow of gardening. However, I see I am doing a lot of things incorrectly and your video taught me a ton. Thank You!
I will make one correction. It only thrives in the heat once it is strong enough to handle the heat. I had two sprouts get baked after a couple of hours in direct sunlight.
Marigolds are one of my faves and the tomatoes seem to love them too! It was also nice to I hear a reference to our Mexican culture - Day of the Dead. I try to grow some for my altar but Last year's crop was a lousy one, and now I know why. Here in Solana Beach they put on a great festival for Dia De Los Muertos (November 2) every year and it's a challenge to procure enough marigolds.
Little did I know in the '70's when my parents had them as a border flower how EASY they seed!! I would pick the flowers and pull them apart bc they smelled so weird and just had so so many seeds! Then I'd just toss and sprinkle the seeds as I was playing in the garden and OMG!!! They grew EVERYWHERE I dropped them!!! We had them for YEARS, just from me and my friends playing around!!😂😂
Aww Brijette I really wanted to give you a hug when you mentioned your mom and dad on the ofrenda this year. Love marigolds. You’ve inspired me to start some more from seed. Thanks for letting me know the correct way to plant them.
My first year growing from seeds, I’ve been gardening for 50 years or so, but never had the time, thank you for the great ideas 😊 I love marigolds especially the large yellow ones
I used seeding pellets indoors before I seeing this video. I hope me marigold seeds are not too deep. You really shared a loit of info I can use for the next pack of seeds. Thank you.
My marigolds had whiteflies one year and I never planted them again. After watching this video I’ll try them again this year because they are so cheerful and take the heat so well.
I planted a couple big beds with Marigolds this year using seed saved from several years ago. Rototilled N WI sand (soil), and spread the seed to fill the beds. Then I put fairly thick straw on top. As they grew I fertilized if the plant color wasn’t dark green with Miracle Grow hose distributor. I planted late so they’re just beginning to flower. Thank you for your help.
I learned a LOT in the first 8 mins of this video. So much information I didn't know. Thank you. So much of the root bounding stuff made sense with a few of my plants I've noticed. I'm definitely gonna apply all these tips
I plant a group now for spring in the Veggie garden and then plant another round in late July garden for fall and Thanksgiving decorations around my front porch and front yard .... such beautiful GOD given JOY.
Best marigold video by far! I think they are so common & people just think that everyone knows what to do. Thank you for such thorough information. Not only about marigolds but about gardening in general. ThNks again!! 🌱♥️
As a newbie, I love this video! So much instruction and presents in a way that was precise, not too many big "plant people" words I don't understand and what I need to know!! You gave info for seed starter people and those that buy the plants from a nursery. Thank you. You need to do all beginner videos...plants and veggies.
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany As a beginner, what flowers are good to start with. For vegetables which ones are good for beginners and how to start. I think most of us start too big. I think I want the basics: cucumber, tomatoes (the videos out there are too numerous and overwhelming), peppers, zucchini, onions and garlic.
We definitely made some classic newbie mistakes with our marigolds, but they self seeded and I have some seedlings sprouting in our raised bed, so I'm pretty excited about that!
I know this video is old and I’ve watched it before … but I just now realized you mentioned your parents passed away. I’m so sorry for your loss. They’ll be so proud of you knowing how many people you help with your videos and your seeds. Can’t wait to see the marigolds you grow for their ofrendas. Thank you for all you do. ❤❤❤
1:51 Thanks for this information. I have been reluctant to give up vegetable planting space for flowers but am learning how essential flowers are. I just planted Marogold and will use the info in this video!
I've killed every marigold I've ever had in the last 30 years. Doesn't matter if it's from seed or as plants. This video has already helped. Finally, I might actually have success.
When I have a root bound plant, I have a bucket of water next to me, take plant out of container, carefully, carefully, massage the dirt away from root system. You don’t have to remove all the dirt, You will lose some of the dirt, then you can gently spread the roots out over the little bitty hill at the bottom of the hole that you create when you dig the hole. I don’t have too much wilting!
My parents had Marigolds in 2 raised flower beds about the size a card table a foot off the ground. a late snow hit they grew to be 3ft. high. that year.
Thank you, Brijette! I'll plant marigolds from seeds next time instead of buying seedlings from the nursery. The okra seeds I got from you all germinated! And so did the sweet corns!! Newbie here and learning a lot from you. And it helps that the seeds I plant are all top quality! Appreciate all that you do to educate us and provide us with high quality seeds. Blessings to you and your family always! 🌻🌱❤🙏
Get seedlings and let the blooms go to seed then use those seeds for the next year u can even go at the end of the season when there on clearance and half dead to harvest the seeds
I love that you mentioned the cultural value of marigolds. In Ecuador, Marigolds are called flowers of the dead. I’ve learned to appreciate their cultural value as well as their ability to grow year-round here in South Florida. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Hi i just watched the video, i'm planting marigolds in my garden this year because we're starting a vegetable garden. I was told dear don't like them . i live in Michigan so i have to wait until middle may, i also just subscribed to your channel .
This video is incredible, not just for marigolds. I already do a lot of the planting guidelines mentioned in this video because that was how I was taught, but it was never explained to me why these things were done, and I didn't really understand why until I saw this video.
After spending too much on seed starter, I learned that taking potting soil over a 1/4” wire grid will remove all the mulch material from the soil. Then use the finer soil for seeds. Having good results w/ fine vermiculite sprinkling too.
First time gardener in PHX Arizona. Raised beds. Purchased seeds from SSC. Love that the seeds are adapted to a growing environment like mine. That was my main interest in purchasing from you. Everything germinating wonderfully. Everyday I look forward to watching them grow bigger. I am loving this new hobby. I bought the helpful Cale dat too. Hanging on my fridge. I read the information on it every morning while I make my coffee.
Great help for planting marigolds‼️👍🏽. I bought many last year. Saved the seeds now it will b do fun to watch them grow and bloom 💕. Hope to have enough for our families Altar to pay our respects for the ones who are not with us. I’m very sorry for your loss 😔 Thank you again🪴
Our marigolds thrived this year from last years seeds tossed into the wildflower garden. I'm sure in large part to the gorgeous rainy season we had. The Monarch butterflies loved them and matched so much they were hard to tell apart. Harvested a ton of seeds yesterday. Thx for the tips!
My favorite flower. It is such a versatile blossom which is so bright and cheerful. Indispensable indeed! I plant rows and rows of them before I plant tomato’s and basil. Big salute to the humble marigold.
I love your explanation of how to water the plants (think of a sponge). Thanks for your inspiration, I am going to try to save the seeds. This will be my first time.
Wow, one of the best videos not only for marigolds but for planting in general. Been growing for many years and this was so super helpful in transplanting!!
I am growing marigolds from seeds for the first time! I hope they turn out. I started them in small cups in my windows and on my porch. I’m in southeast Texas

This is the gardening 101 video I’ve been searching for. At first I was like, a 20 minute video on marigolds 🤯, but it’s so much more. Thanks so much!
I could actually smell the marigolds as i watched this video. Brings back memories of moms garden.
I’ve been growing marigolds forever and I can’t believe how much I learned watching your video thank you!
Ofrendas look so beautiful covered in Marigolds!!
If u take seeds from flowers can u put them stright in soil to bloom next year? Xx 🏵🌼💛🧡
They may not be everybody’s favourite on looks or smell, but they are amazing as companion plants
