Lovely playing, Mr Stump, as usual. Les Preludes has always been a firm favourite with the music loving public ( and the Nazis ) with fine opportunities for the Horn players to show their stuff. Incidentally, as a retired semi-pro Horn player with more than a touch of daftness in him, the quartet tune has always reminded me of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". Silly I know but there it is. You have to have a good sense of humour to stay with the Horn.
Which reminds me of another Horn player's taste for the silly. I was engaged to play in the oratorio "Samson" by Handel. The library copy scores were meant to have all previous markings erased before being returned to the library but our copy for 1st/2nd Horns hadn't quite been cleaned up. The aria "Old Manoah's Joyful Steps" had been amended by a previous player to read "Old Manoah had a farm". We giggled our way all through it at rehearsal !

Haha that's quite a story! Thanks for watching!

Brilliant idea, perfectly executed, sublime sound!
All through the 1960s, there was a radio station in LA that used Liszt's "love theme" (your four-horns passage) as its theme song in the evening. Think of the millions of people in the Greater Los Angeles Area who had that passage engraved on their souls forever, around 7 pm each day. For them (myself included), the theme was not just 'love', but life itself.
(And to think that some looked down on Liszt as a naive orchestrator. Well, I'm sure there's SOME truth to that [an observation better applied to Chopin, though, who had been pushed by his 'handlers' into doing some orchestral writing], but then there's the success of this piece, and Liszt's use of the horn section in particular, which does not smack of a newbie orchestrator.)

this is great! thank you for sharing these excerpt recordings! Looking at the 4th horn excerpt that starts in measure 70, do you have any advice on where to breathe? In context I’m sure it’s just a matter of stagger breathing but I’m currently working on this excerpt for an audition and I’m curious if you had any suggestions, thank you!!

so glad you enjoyed it! That's an excellent question, and I'm not sure I have the best answer. But in this video, I breathed right after the tie before the second note of the triplet, second beat of measure 73...although I also breathed during the low F#🤦‍♂️ which I don't think is good😂. In any case, I think that spot in the phrase (2nd beat of 73) as well as after the tie before the last two notes of measure 76, and after beat 1 of 78 may be the least of the evils, if that makes any sense. Certainly do ask others as well though in case they may have a better solution. I have to make the lame excuse that it's been two and a half years since I've played this piece😅, so I might not have the best ideas at the moment. Anyway, best of luck to you on your audition!!

You can find it on imslp; if you just search “Liszt Les Preludes imslp” you should find it pretty easily, and they have all the parts for the whole orchestra! Thanks for stopping by!

What is the point of those green buttons on the horn? I've seen lots of them I just don't know why.

Those are earplugs; conveniently wedged in between the slide tubes for emergencies when the tympani or trombones get too loud in the orchestra. And even though I haven’t played in an orchestra in 10 months now (thanks a lot covid) I just haven’t bothered to take them out

The piece was written for natural horns, but I'm just playing it on a modern double horn here
