Hi, my name is Andrew. I play the Violin, the Viola, and the French horn, as well as sing and play a little guitar for fun. I enjoy a wide variety of music, and this channel is the place where I just have fun doing my favorite thing, playing music.😁
I'm often asked where/if I go to school, so I'll briefly explain here:
-I graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in Horn Performance in 2022
-I will be attending the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music starting fall 2024 pursuing a Master of Music degree double majoring in Violin and Viola Performance
I also spent one year pursuing a Master’s degree in Violin Performance at Temple University from 2022-23, but in the meantime have been taking a gap year.
Thanks for looking, I hope you enjoy my videos, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

A. Bruckner, Symphony Nr. 5 Finale, Low Brass
I used to be a low brass player back in the day, and I really miss it! It's fun to get the opportunity to mess around on these instruments again. This finale to Bruckner 5 is so epic, I just had to give it a try.

The gold plated solve your problem?
Unfortunately not, I react to gold plating as well as silver. I have to play a plastic rim.
It is really fascinating to hear you talk about the Alto Horn from your perspective. I am a Tenor Horn (haha!) player and have been for a while, with Brass band being my introduction to music in general I didn't realise just how strange the set up of the Brass Band family is to people who aren't familiar with it. It reminds me of my own confusion in learning how orchestras work and picking up a single F French horn for the first time. Working on the Hindemith off and on for a while now, which is why your video peaked my interest, your excerpts sounded amazing! The convertible tuning slide is just bizarre, though I have heard that Alto Horns have gone through some quite big changes over the 20th century to so heaven knows why it is like that.
I am beginner and played on a very old instrument from the music school, heavy built and Kruspe style. Then recently, I bought a second hand Yamaha YHR 664. It looked good but the sound was so "ordinary", nothing romantic, almost like a good trombone . Of course, next I played it with a DW 4 mpc and that helped to give a warmer, deeper sound. But so, I learn here that the difference between Kruspe and other wraps is very real on Yamaha. The 664 is it seems a kind of modified Geyer??
Well, the Yamaha 664 is really neither Kruspe nor Geyer. Technically it is a modified Kruspe wrap, but it behaves nothing like a Kruspe style horn. Those Yamahas from the 70's-80's approximately such as the 561, 662, 664, and other variants, are copies of the Lawson design, which is its own thing. Very good instruments, but also not a super colorful sound. The mouthpiece certainly can make a big difference.
You captured that magical and nostalgic feeling I felt the first time I heard it… you deserve more views. ❤
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it!
this is gorgeous
Thank you!
Nice job you did well in explaining things about fenders head stalk shape’s and you played great music!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it
Is it a master art violin? Or just a normal Juzek.
Just a normal Juzek
I'm leaving a question here because I couldn't find other video of your review about this mouthpiece. So what do you think about Laskey F series on that(kruspe style horn) and don't you have problems on high range? I'd heard that many people says G series is for geyer horn. But they also talked G series is standard, not F series. I'm confused by that. My horn is holton h279, and I'm considering between 775F or 775J. I'm afraid of F series's cup depth is quite deep so that affects high register. That's the reason why I consider J series too.
Well, I have since switched to a Laskey G cup, as it is slightly more efficient for me, but honestly, I think there is no trouble at all in the high range on the Laskey F mouthpiece. The J cup is very shallow, and I think too bright sounding, but the G and F cups are both great options for a Kruspe style horn. Even though people say G cup is for Geyer, I think it works just as well on Kruspe style also. I think Either 775F or 775G are great choices for your Holton. I think the high register shouldn't be any problem. But I think the J cup will sound too bright and not fit the horn very well.
This feels like a lost Final Fantasy tune. (Considering she did music for the Crystal Chronicles spinoff series) Kumi is heavily underrated in both game music and JRPGs as well.
I agree, heavily underrated. She writes amazing stuff
Competent adult amateur here. I've spent 20+ years playing a 90s Yamaha YHR-664. It has the same wrap as Yamaha's very first pro-level horn, the 662. It's Kruspe-ish but actually based on a Sansone design. I've tried several pro horns over the years - Alexanders and Paxmans - and while they're undeniably better, they're not $5000 better for me. If you're a pro and can get 100% out of an instrument, the instrument matters. For me a 90s Yamaha has always had enough "room to grow". The deficiencies are almost always in the player, not the instrument.
Neat! Yes I've seen those older Yamaha models. I tried a 561 once and although that's the student model, I loved it. Pretty much every Yamaha I've tried have been wonderful, so reliable and even, and lots of room to grow, I agree.
I think it is not in 1 world. It is both grave and gentle at the same time. Just like Mozart music ^^
Amazing job, Cuz!
Thank you so much!
On Yamaha horns, is it better to use European or Morse shank mouthpieces?
It really depends on the horn, and the specific mouthpiece, and your playing style. I’ve found not all Yamaha’s have the same receiver size, so it’s a case by case thing.
@andrewstump6138 I asked this beacause a saw a video telling that Morse shank mouthpieces on a Yamaha horn may cause intonation problems, even with the combo taper. I have a Yamaha 567 and I would like to buy a Laskey mouthpiece, now Im think which is the correct shank.
Oh I see, interesting. I’ve not heard that said, but I suppose the best way to find out is to try both options if you can. I wish I could be of more help, but I honestly don’t know for sure
As an amateur horn player (also based in Philly actually), the idea of someday getting my hands on a vienna horn is a distant dream, but man, that must have been so much fun!
How cool! Yes, would be a dream for me too, I had this horn for such a short time, and I still miss it, would love to play a Vienna horn again.
I'm a French horn player looking for an Alto horn keyed in F, and a search brought me here. Your tone is gorgeous. I've read that using a French horn mouthpiece is a compromise, so I wonder how the tone might differ with an alto horn specialist using a conventional mouthpiece. Also, I'm curious what mouthpiece you used for this recording?
Oh cool! It may be very difficult to find an alto in F, almost all of them are in Eb. Although there is the rare King Altonium, a weird marching band contraption from the 70’s, that is in F I believe, and I think it may accept a horn mouthpiece, but don’t quote me on that, haha. I think playing alto horn with a french horn mouthpiece ends up making it warmer sounding, and more mellow, and also makes intonation more difficult. Playing with a conventional alto mouthpiece would probably sound brighter, and a little more baritone-horn-like in quality of sound. I’m playing a Laskey 75G in this video.
Great playing! Can I include a section of this in a video I’m making on Shostakovich?
Thanks! Sure you can use it

You played this beautifully! I wish the part at 2:23 was brought out more in full recordings, it adds a lot to the chords but you can never hear it over the strings!
Thank you so much! Yeah for sure, these harmonies are just divine
Hi, are you still happy with the Newporter after 11 months? I see a lot of negative comments about Fender acoustics, but I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks.
I absolutely love mine! I have seen negative comments as well, and perhaps those are from more experienced players who are used to higher end guitars. But for amateur me, it's perfect.
will you have the sheet music?
I'm actually not sure where my copy of the music went for this, but I'll look for it!
LOVE this- I have a Juzek brought by my granddad, from the Carpathian Mts- in the early 1900's, not sure exact date - but he played- my father played and now I am playing it again after a 50+ year hiatus at almost 70 yrs old. I love the history of my violin and it is wonderful to see another- what strings do you have on your special instrument ? Thank you for sharing this video-
That's so cool! So glad you're enjoying your special instrument! I have vision strings from thomastik-infeld in this video. Very good quality for the price. Thanks so much for watching!

Bro you shred
Thanks man
Thanks for the video! I have a single Amati (unknown age) that is in good shape overall, but is very squirrely above third space C, compared to the F side of my double horn. I am getting the mouthpiece receiver fixed since I noticed all my mouthpieces only go in very shallowly in it (like 5 mm). I'm hoping that might make it more secure, but after watching your video I also kind of want to get one of these horns! There's something about King horns that intrigues me.
So glad you enjoyed it! That's awesome! Yeah, these King horns are kind of hidden gems I think, really great playing horns. I have seen horns that have a narrower reciever and the mouthpiece doesn't go in as far--in my experience, that does mess the intonation up a bit. I think there is a sweet spot of where the mouthpiece should go to, but always open to trial and error! I hope you keep enjoying your horn!

Guessing...correct if im wrong....in order of size, Bb Tenor, Bb Symphonic Tenor & FF Bass Trombone? And CC Contrabass Tuba?
@@FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4HimVery close! Basically the order is, small bore Bb tenor, large bore symphonic tenor, Bb/F bass trombone (only one valve, but full .562 bore), and BBb contrabass tuba
@@andrewstump6138 Ahhh.... gotcha! 😂 Close enough haha. Question, do you consider the Horn a low brass instrument too?
Close enough for sure! I personally do not consider horn a low brass, the reason being the mouthpiece size. The rim of a horn mouthpiece is a similar size to a trumpet mouthpiece and significantly smaller than even a small tenor trombone mouthpiece, making the embouchure very very different. So, despite the fact that the horn can play quite low, because of the mouthpiece and embouchure, I consider it a high brass instrument.
@@andrewstump6138Interesting perspective bro, understandable. Nobody really writes low stuff for the Horn anyways lol. I always wondered what different people think because if you ask ten people which is it you might get five different answers. They definitely have a low brass fundamental pitch, FF Bass & Bb Tenor, but that's just due to the length. The length is more for richer sound quality than low notes. I'm with you on high brass❤
That was absolutely amazing! Very moving! Congratulations on a great and sensitive interpretation!

to me the timbre change with dynamics matter way more than the change is volume
I agree
I've owned one of these since 1983. Mine had been a demo model with the NY Phil (at least that's what the Yamaha sales rep stated). So I bought it slightly used: the couple minor bell throat dents were repaired at no cost to me. Played it through college, and 23 years as a US Army Band Horn player. I stopped playing in 2009, when I retired. Now I've picked the Horn back up, started playing again. Needless to say, I have a very intimate relationship with this Horn after this many years (41 😉). Selling point when I originally purchased it was the incredibly easy, secure high register: to that point, it had always been a challenge. This instrument completely transformed my confidence level in all registers, and so greatly improved my Horn playing. It also has great power (volume) without great effort. As Ferris Bueller said... th-cam.com/video/0wALArd2rvo/w-d-xo.html
HAHA yes! Perfect use of the reference😂. That's so cool to hear your great experience with the 862! I loved playing this horn during the short time I got to borrow it. And everything you said lines up perfectly with my thoughts as well. The security in the high register and overall ease is unmatched on a horn of this style. There are three horn players I've known personally now who also own one and have said very glowing things about it. There have been a number of times one has popped up for sale, but I didn't have the money. Still dreaming of snagging one at some point hopefully.
Gosh, I love Eric Whitacre's music. Very well done! My personal favorite is October, I try to listen to it on the 1st every year, helps me get into the fall spirit, since i'm in an area that doesn't really change for the seasons. Keep up the great work, you truly play beautifully.
Thank you so much! I also love October, such a beautiful piece, and the choral version, which goes by the name Alleluia. Whitacre’s music really feeds the soul, I hope to keep playing more of it! Thanks for watching!

You’re right on the money about Wessex and Mack Brass coming from the same factory. The company that makes these horns is the Chinese company Jinbao. Jinbao has really upped their quality in the past few years and distributors like Mack Brass and Wessex have been able to build a successful business model from it. I’m not sure about Wessex, but the people at Mack Brass will make small tweaks to the instruments if needed. Either way, these Chinese instruments are solid products for a remarkably affordable price.
