Manitowoc SMS050A under counter ice machine troubleshooting

- This Manitowoc SMS050 ice machine came into my shop because it wasn’t making ice. After some quick troubleshooting I found that the spray nozzles weren’t working properly. They were clogged with scale and needed to be cleaned out. The water inlet valve was giving me trouble as-well. The water wasn’t filling the water tray fast enough. We’ll end up replacing the water valve.

First time in three years I’ve seen this kind of machine.
Did replacing the evaporator water inlet valve help make harvest times faster? I bought one of these used and cleaned it up exactly like you did but my harvest times are really slow and the water flowing up top on the evaporator is even slower than what you showed in this video.
Also, how do you know if it needs to be charged with Freon? Thanks!
The customer didn’t want to replace the water inlet valve. You should check on your water filter to make sure it doesn’t need to be changed.
I’m not sure if this machine has refrigeration ports or not but that’s how you’d check. Use the pressures as a guide. If they’re in range then you’re probably fine.

I might have missed it in the video but was the machine still leaking after you cleaned it?
I might have missed it myself. The leak was being caused by the spray nozzles shooting water on the back wall instead of straight up onto the evaporator. Cleaning out all the calcium deposits fixed the issue.
