Started playing banjo when I was eight and Ralph Stanley was a big influence on me, as well as Earl Scruggs, of course. This brings back a lot of great memories seeing Ralph play at festivals. Great stuff!

All my people are from the next county over from where Keith and Ricky were raised. From the time I first heard Keith, there was a reassuring familiarity in his music that I could never put my finger on, most especially when he sang bluegrass. Finally I realized that there are slight things he does in his vocal, especially how he forms certain words that traces right back to the same area that as a young kid I learned to sing and pick. The little vocal runs into a phrase or word is nearly angelic to me. My family and the people that were the most important to me were always teaching me how to pick and included me in the music, which never stopped. One of the best gifts they ever gave me was music. I am getting upper-middle-aged now and the world is a lonely place sometimes without great talents like Keith, the elders of my family that brought me along and shared a blessing with me, and others, but I know we will all be together again someday and hopefully in the meantime I can come listen to MY personal favorite lead bluegrass vocal of all time. He may not be for everyone, but it sure takes me home and fills my heart. I'm thankful for what Keith gave us.
I’m from Morgan County myself, like you, just the next county over from Elliot County and Sandy Hook. My grandfather was a Sexton and could play any musical instrument you put in front of him. He played with Ralph Stanley a few times. So many great men are gone now….

I come up in South West VA lived two miles from Stanleys old home place. Boy I miss them hills of home setting on the front porch after eating a big dinner. I remember Carter and Ralph would stop by and set. Listen to where they have been and going to next. Priceless stories !! Carter and Ralph RIP in them hills of home.
I guess I am a little blessed and fortunate to live where I do. Keith Whitley is from a bordering county (Elliott County) and Ricky Skaggs is from another bordering county (Lawrence County) and still yet in another bordering county (Johnson County) there came two girls by the name of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle and a guy named Chris Stapleton. Just about an hour and half down the road a couple of guys named Bobby and Sonny Osbourne who live in (Leslie County). My mom worked with Bobby back in the fifties when they worked at NCR in Dayton, Ohio. Bobby and his cousin Dean Osbourne run a school that teaches Bluegrass music at the local college in Hazard, KY. Back during that period of time this video was filmed, it seemed that there was a Bluegrass festival about every weekend, somewhere. One of my best friends and myself went to Natural Bridge in Slade, KY, I believe it was the same year 1977, and we saw this same group. We stood about five feet away from the stage, so we got a good view and good listening. Back then the performers interacted with the people and would talk with you like they knew you. (Some still do) A few years ago I looked out my front door and seen a fancy horse trailer and pickup truck at the barn of a friend I went to high school with and wondered who in the world owned that fancy thing. My cousin worked for the guy, so later that day I asked my cousin, I said Al who was that in that fancy rig over at Paul's barn? He said you won't believe it, that was Ralph Stanley, he bought one of Paul's prize mules. I know Keith and Ricky first met at a Bluegrass competition about five miles from the house in a little place called Ezel, KY. My cousin and her husband along with a good friend and Ricky Skaggs brother sang gospel music in several of the local churches. I know Keith's brother Dwight also done a little playing and singing, not sure if he still does or not. There are so many VERY talented musicians and singers around here it's unreal, seems like every other person plays some kind of instrument and there are several that are REALLY good vocalists. I have Dean Osborne on facebook and can keep up with him and Bobby that way, and with others also. As I said I am blessed and fortunate to live where I do, and I try not to take it for granted as much as I used to, because not everybody is so fortunate to be surrounded by all this GREAT music, and GREAT people.
I did grow up in West Virginia out in the country during the 50s, 60s and the 70s. I cut my teeth on bluegrass and gospel, then listened to some 70s rock, but I'm still bluegrass at heart!!!
I love music, it has a place in every part of your life good bad and anything in between. And this bluegrass music is some of the BEST MUSIC EVER MADE !!!! And it brings back memories of my childhood with my Daddy that I won't ever forget. I miss my Dad like something awful so having his good BLUEGRASS MUSIC to listen to on the days I need to feel close to him is a TRUE BLESSING 🙌

He was south-east Kentucky through and through , he would have loved the victory the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team had today in the Super-Regionals, it won't be long.

I saw Curly Ray a couple of years before this. He was the opening act for Bill Monroe. Lester Flatt and The Nashville Grass was the middle act. I got to meet all of them. One of the best days of my life.

Now with Renfro's passing in july 2019 they are all together again in heaven where they can play forever. This group is the best for playing mt. music and all them singing together. I play this just about every day.
it was around 76 or 77 it was a year or 2 before i got married so i cant remember exactly a friend of mine and I drove up to ralph stanly,s festival from tenn we got there a week early so we could sight see we pulled up at curly ray,s home i was scared to death i knew we was going to get shot i didnt know he knew curly very well by the way just in case who ever was to read this didnt know curly was ralph fiddler till he passed frankie blowed the horn curly come out i just knew we was going to get a cussing but instead curly hollered out hey frankie how are ye get out, my friend was frankie moore if u look on ralph stanly box set u will see it says a special thanks to frankie moore for making this possible he had ever record and album on the original label that the stanly bro,s every recorded so when they got ready to make the box set curly had called frankie to borrow his albums for ralph so they could make the box set with the original labels ,but anyways i getting sidetracked i had a d28 martin that i played and sang with and still have today frankie ask curly would you mind playing a couple songs with my friend curly said be glad 2 talk about a memory i will never forget that

Right after Bill Monroe there's Ralph Stanley. He grew up in the mountains singing the high lonesome sound. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys touched many lives during the many years they played. I was honored to have heard them a couple of times. They were truly an American treasure. We love and miss you Ralph!

I had the privilege to become close friends with Renfro, we played in another band together and traveled many miles, sharing many laughs together. He was an awesome person as well guitarist. Rest in peace my friend and thanks for all you taught me.
Have you heard of the Cleverlys? They do bluegrass covers of old top 40 hits. They are amazing and hilarious. Try turning them on to that or some Hayseed Dixie (bluegrass AC/DC cover band) also pretty darn good.
I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee and man this makes me homesick. I was born the year this show happened. I love this music and always have. We must never forget the generation that started it all. I also think it really doesn’t need to change because they had it right.
I grew up in Clintwood. Ralph Stanley is a Dickenson County legend. My dad always said Ralph’s brother, Carter Stanley, was more talented than Ralph was.
Brings Tears to my eyes. My Dad who just passed introduced me to this great music when I was 10 years old. I had the privilege to see all of these legends in person growing up, even though we were from upstate NY. Like was said previously, there will never be a concert like this again. All the Legends are gone now, however there legacy will live forever. 🙏🙏
I'm 27 years old and grew up on this type music bc of my grandfather who was a founding member of the The Panhandle Express band from Northwest Florida and toured around and about with some of the same bands around in these days. Bluegrass festivals was where I learned about real music and this here's what real music is. Iv been apart of a lot of music genres around my location from bluegrass/country to death metal, which I listen to both, everyday of my being. This always brings me back home safe

bluegrass was very popular in the 70's and even as far as the 80's and had a very big following with the likes of Bill Monroe and the King of Bluegrass himself Jimmy Martin. Once they died off, it fell off the edge but will live on forever.

I was fortunate to see Ricky Skaggs and Kieth Whitley with Ralph Stanley at Yale in New Haven in Ct. They had a coffee house about once a month. I think it was in 1972. I didn’t realize what I was seeing at the time. I’ll never forget it.

My mother taught me to pray for them and forgive them. Don't have the space to tell you how that turned out. I'll just say, in time I led them to the Lord.
At 28:40, the most haunting and memorable of ANY of the songs on this evening was "I've Just Seen The Rock Of Ages" -- Keith Whitley was amazing at old time bluegrass vocals to start this song out, and when Ralph joins him a few moments later we are blessed with a duet that will always stand the test of time as there will never be a sound quite like that ever again. Ricky Scaggs was in the crowd cheering them on too.

Good mountain music. Im from same town as Renfro Proffit and just a few miles away from Stanley homeplace. Keith Whitley was as close to Carter as they come. So many memories of my chilhood hearing this great music.
Sir, Old Mullins boy from Tarpon, half way between Clintwood and Haysi. Had a Clintwood address, Clinchco phone number and went to Haysi High School in the mid 1970s. Very familiar with Ralph and band. My personal best included Roy Lee Center whom I thought had a more Carter sound. The era of Whitley, Skaggs, Cline, Center, Cooke and Raph were the very best in my humble opinion. Wishing you the very best Sir, May your journey of life be smooth and straght, Sgt. Mullins.

I actually prefer 1977 Keith Whitley. But to each his own I say.. both eras are divine. with Dr. Stanley singing the highs, it’s hard to beat

Profitt is a really good guitarist whom I believe stayed with bluegrass roots and didn't go to nashville to make it big.

it was around 76 or 77 it was a year or 2 before i got married so i cant remember exactly a friend of mine and I drove up to ralph stanly,s festival from tenn we got there a week early so we could sight see we pulled up at curly ray,s home i was scared to death i knew we was going to get shot i didnt know he knew curly very well by the way just in case who ever was to read this didnt know curly was ralph fiddler till he passed frankie blowed the horn curly come out i just knew we was going to get a cussing but instead curly hollered out hey frankie how are ye get out, my friend was frankie moore if u look on ralph stanly box set u will see it says a special thanks to frankie moore for making this possible he had ever record and album on the original label that the stanly bro,s every recorded so when they got ready to make the box set curly had called frankie to borrow his albums for ralph so they could make the box set with the original labels ,but anyways i getting sidetracked i had a d28 martin that i played and sang with and still have today frankie ask curly would you mind playing a couple songs with my friend curly said be glad 2 talk about a memory i will never forget that

Right after Bill Monroe there's Ralph Stanley. He grew up in the mountains singing the high lonesome sound. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys touched many lives during the many years they played. I was honored to have heard them a couple of times. They were truly an American treasure. We love and miss you Ralph!

So glad I got to see Ralph Stanley and the clinch Mountain boys several times his music will never grow old to me.
I had the privilege to become close friends with Renfro, we played in another band together and traveled many miles, sharing many laughs together. He was an awesome person as well guitarist. Rest in peace my friend and thanks for all you taught me.

Have you heard of the Cleverlys? They do bluegrass covers of old top 40 hits. They are amazing and hilarious. Try turning them on to that or some Hayseed Dixie (bluegrass AC/DC cover band) also pretty darn good.
I grew up in the hills of East Tennessee and man this makes me homesick. I was born the year this show happened.
I love this music and always have. We must never forget the generation that started it all. I also think it really doesn’t need to change because they had it right.

I grew up in Clintwood. Ralph Stanley is a Dickenson County legend. My dad always said Ralph’s brother, Carter Stanley, was more talented than Ralph was.

Brings Tears to my eyes. My Dad who just passed introduced me to this great music when I was 10 years old. I had the privilege to see all of these legends in person growing up, even though we were from upstate NY. Like was said previously, there will never be a concert like this again. All the Legends are gone now, however there legacy will live forever. 🙏🙏

I'm 27 years old and grew up on this type music bc of my grandfather who was a founding member of the The Panhandle Express band from Northwest Florida and toured around and about with some of the same bands around in these days. Bluegrass festivals was where I learned about real music and this here's what real music is. Iv been apart of a lot of music genres around my location from bluegrass/country to death metal, which I listen to both, everyday of my being. This always brings me back home safe

I grew up in the 60s. Love Bluegrass and Classic Country. Music was good to the mid 80s
That's when country was country and blue grass was bluegrass for real I was born in late fifty's
bluegrass was very popular in the 70's and even as far as the 80's and had a very big following with the likes of Bill Monroe and the King of Bluegrass himself Jimmy Martin. Once they died off, it fell off the edge but will live on forever.

The instrumentations are right on, mighty fine strings pickings, the harmony is out of this world, totally awesome.

I was fortunate to see Ricky Skaggs and Kieth Whitley with Ralph Stanley at Yale in New Haven in Ct. They had a coffee house about once a month. I think it was in
1972. I didn’t realize what I was seeing at the time. I’ll never forget it.
There never has been nor will there ever be another voice like Whitley’s.

My mother taught me to pray for them and forgive them. Don't have the space to tell you how that turned out. I'll just say, in time I led them to the Lord.

At 28:40, the most haunting and memorable of ANY of the songs on this evening was "I've Just Seen The Rock Of Ages" -- Keith Whitley was amazing at old time bluegrass vocals to start this song out, and when Ralph joins him a few moments later we are blessed with a duet that will always stand the test of time as there will never be a sound quite like that ever again. Ricky Scaggs was in the crowd cheering them on too.

Good mountain music. Im from same town as Renfro Proffit and just a few miles away from Stanley homeplace. Keith Whitley was as close to Carter as they come. So many memories of my chilhood hearing this great music.

Old Mullins boy from Tarpon, half way between Clintwood and Haysi. Had a Clintwood address, Clinchco phone number and went to Haysi High School in the mid 1970s. Very familiar with Ralph and band. My personal best included Roy Lee Center whom I thought had a more Carter sound. The era of Whitley, Skaggs, Cline, Center, Cooke and Raph were the very best in my humble opinion.
