  • In the forty-first episode of "Assassin's Creed: The Real History" we take a look at one of the most influential figures in the French Revolution, Maximilien de Robespierre.
This series will be a way for me to shed light on the real history behind characters, groups, events and locations that are showcased in the Assassin's Creed video game series. Throughout the video I will be comparing real historical moments to those represented in the selected game.
If you have any characters, groups, events or locations that you'd like me to cover in the future, please be sure to leave it in a comment below.

It was disappointing that Robespierre wasn't in the game that much. Same goes for Napoleon and De Sade. The story in general wasn't that good, and that's a shame, because the French Revolution is a very interesting time period.

I was so absolutely disappointed with how they portrayed him in the game's storyline; Robespierre had massive potential to be an interesting character for the AC series and they screwed it all up. Having him portrayed as a Templar stooge completely ruins his character and trivializes the entire point of the French Revolution. The smarter option would have been to make him one of the leaders of the Assassins and have him eventually become the main antagonist as he went mad with power. Robespierre's ambition to destroy the French Monarchy and Aristocracy through a Reign of Terror would have been an interesting examination of how the Assassin's Creed could be taken in an extremely dark direction.

omer shaik if he wasn't killed he would have banned the death penalty, the "reighn of terror" was put in place because there was a large chance the royalists could re-capture the government. He had to do it to ensure the stability of the new republic and he never attended the executions

@@ninjanarwhal4488 exactly, he kind of had to accept people getting killed so that the people in the streets would not riot all over the place (as they were far more extreme than the politicians could be). As Danton said "Soyons terribles pour dispenser le peuple de l’être.", people in 1793 were apparently mostly executed for this reason AND were approved by a committee, not by Robespierre in particular who was also following the movement for political reasons (some kind of lesser evil situation).

Not really. Death as a deterrent or punishment doesn't make sense but in a revolutionary situation, which a type of war, killing the enemy is instrumental in consolidating the revolution and suppressing counter revolution. Peanuts and oranges. It's only contradictory if one looks at it with unsophisticated eyes.

From what I've read, there's been a lot of apprehension concerning his representation, which is understandable enough given the arguments I've read. However, I try to keep a generally unbiased opinion while doing my research and unfortunately, as is the case with many people/elements related to the French revolution, there are various interpretations of Robespierre historically. Although these vary widely, two that seem rather common were that he was a good politician turned bloody tyrant, or a good politician who's history has either been misunderstood or misrepresented, thus painting him far worse than he actually was.
Both sides tend to agree on many of his positive achievements, mainly regarding progressive policies being instituted into French government, however it appears that the later part of his life is where the disagreements truly begin. Looking at Unity in a black and white sense, I can see why one side would be offended, since on the surface he really seems to be portrayed the tyrant in this game. Perhaps it's just me, but from what I gathered the game gave you a brief glimpse into his anti-corruption beliefs and demonstrated how he aligned himself with the Templars, eventually leading to the Terror. SPOILER - the scene where the protagonists are hunting him after his escape made me see him more as an individual who became a puppet of the Templars, as he needed his masters' help to survive, instead of a bloodthirsty tyrant standing his ground - END SPOILER.
Therefore, using this information, in addition to how his actions at the festival of the supreme were explained, I think that they really did give us the best of both worlds. This isn't to say the game exactly portrayed the real history by any means, but I personally found that they were able to mix both popular interpretations of Robespierre. For that reason, in my opinion, he came off as a man with great intentions, hoping to cleanse government of corruption, who suddenly got caught up with the Templars who brought his beliefs to an extreme beyond his expectations. Then, everything came crumbling down through the intervention of his adversaries, and when he was abandoned by his allies I found that it was clear he was not necessarily the evil tyrant but more the used puppet. However, that's just a single possible interpretation.
Haha, sorry for the super long answer, your comment got me thinking and I wanted to expand my thoughts in the video to further elaborate on your statement.

Robespierre is clearly depicted as a grotesque vilain/borderline psychopath, and the Revolution as a bloody farce, there is no such thing as a "balanced point of view" in that game. Nobles are represented as goods, revolutionaries and the french people as bad in the most superficial manner. That game is a mix of revisionism and reactionary propaganda.

Fun fact: the release of AC:U caused quite the outrage in France. Mostly because Robespierre is portrayed as a bloodthirsty madman.
A few politicians criticized his portrayal in the game. And I could hardly disagree with them.
In the past decades, not only Robespierre, but the Revolution as a whole, have been heavily criticized, and oddly, not only by the right-wing, but also by a fringe of the left. Robespierre's role as an opponent to death penatly, slavery and privileges, his fight for democracy and equality, are conveniently brushed under the rug, leaving only him as the inspirator of the Terror, or as the man who waged war to the rest of Europe. Which is pretty insane, considering that Robespierre wasn't in power when the Terror started, and that he always opposed war, even during his mandate in the Comité de salut public.
Meanwhile, Danton, who was a corrupted douchebag, and who didn't give two shits about the Revolution and its ideals, suddenly became a hero, as he is in AC:U.
As Thomas Brady said, the whole story in AC:U felt really lame. Robespierre could have been an interesting character, the one AC occasionnally - albeit too rarely - create. A sincere, good man who gets corrupted with the good old "the end justifies the means". But all his apparitions in AC:U left me cold. He looked like your average AC vilain, with evil laughter and all. He was probably as ridiculous as the Borgia daddy and son.

Hey Robias What are thoughts on assassin's creed victory. some screen shots were leaked and ubisoft has admitted to having this new assassin's game in development. in one screenshot you can clearly see the big ben clock tower in london. i did some quick research and big ben was built in 1858, but im not sure what conflicts involving Great Britain from that time the assassin's might find themselves involved in. also there was a screen shot showing factories and smoke over the london skyline so my guess is that the gameplay time period will be sometime in the industrial revolution. just curious about what your thoughts on this new game are.

If I can also make a suggestion, make the videos a little shorter, especially if you did vids for them already (like Robespierre and Napoleon). 10-14 minutes is a little pushy, IMO

    • @OnlineKnights
      @OnlineKnights  9 ปีที่แล้ว

tropicAces Fair enough. To be honest, I tried my best to streamline their info, thus shortening the videos from the original versions, however the addition of the summary segment at the end and audio bits does add to the video length. Overall however, these are probably going to be the 2 longest videos (as far as I can currently tell) when considering the updated Unity content. As always, I appreciate the criticism and will do my best to improve upon it. Thank you for your feedback.

For me, he was a good person, but for other, he was bad. But Robespierre wasn't tyran because it was a conspiracy. Robespierre helped poors and others revolutionnaries want most money for themself. Robespierre hated money and he refused his money for his work. When he was sick, others killed innocents and said "is Robespierre" but he was innocent.
      This is my opinion.

Robespierre was an idealist: he wanted to create and establish a Utopian society. The power he came to wield, went to his head, and was the cause of his downfall.
Napoleon was a pragmatist: intent on both self-aggrandizement, and the glorification of France. Needless to say from a practical point of view, the latter was far more successful than the former.
One might regard Robespierre, roughly, as the archetypal leftist revolutionary Maximum Leader, and Bonaparte as the prototype for the fascist military strongman. But i don't know if you can apply those terms(leftist or fascist) in those times.
