    This 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 convertible is one of less than 110 known W30 442 drop-tops built, and even though power levels began to slide in 1971, this one still stands tall. Wearing a unique shade of Bittersweet paint with a black top and interior, this W30 boasts a 455 V8, a TH 400 automatic trans, a bench seat, and column shift. Another cool car from the Brothers Collection.

    1968-1971 a 442 was it's own car. In 1972 (last year of this body style), it went back to being a Cutlass with a 442 option if you so desired to purchase it. A lot of people look at 68-71 442's and automatically call it a Cutlass. A GTO is it's own car, you can't call it a LeMans.

    Oldsmobile was my favorite division of GM. Even its muscle cars were luxurious. My Dad owned a '63 Starfire convertible, considerably bigger than a Cutlass inside and out, and a real attention getter.

    First car I ever owned! 1971 Olds 442 W-30 Bittersweet hard top with bucket seats and a Hurst his and hers transmission- automatic on one side, slapped it over to the right to get to the turbohydromatic shifting side! What a fantastic car she was! Also the first car I ever did any motor work on! I miss her every day!

      2nd car I ever had...1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible 350 4bbl w /TH350. Bittersweet with black top, console, buckets, factory air, front discs, Super Stock wheels and raised whites. My Dad helped me buy it at an action in Bel Air, MD. What a super cool car.
      Got wrecked right after my first job out of college. Could have been repaired but I had no money to do it so I sold it. I miss that car everyday as well. Long may she run!!!
      Recently looked for another one for over 3 years. Ended up with a 72 CS convert with all the same goodies. Saddle bronze with white top, buckets. Working on her now and having a ball

    I owned a 71 Cutlass "S" in High school with this exact color combo (Hard top) It had the standard 455. The '70 and '71 442 W-30 option came with a specially calibrated 800CFM Quadrajet carb as well. All other GM makes utilized a standard 750CFM Quadrajet. The difference was in the primary venturi bore size. Also in 1971 Olds, Buick were much less affected by the lower compression than say Chevy SBS / BBC. Only one manufacturer: Pontiac actually went back to the drawing board in '71 to redesign the internal engine parts to still make good HP/ TQ but at a lower compression point to run on unleaded gas. But even that train ran off the tracks at the end 1975

    Very presentable 4-4-2 Convertible. Owned needs to switch the valve covers left to right, and right to left. Bittersweet was a very nice color in 1971 and looks terrific with the black top and interior. My '72 4-4-2 convertible is unique in the fact it is Nutmeg Brown, an 88 and Ninety-Eight color, and has a black top and interior, so will look cool when finished.

  • @hiitsstillme

    The research I did on the '71 GM cars from periodicals of the day, particularly Olds and Buick, indicated they upped the rear axle ratio, tweaked the carb to make it a bit more responsive, and modified the turbo 400 trans for lower rpm and firmer upshifts. So despite the lowered compression ratio, they were very much comparable in performance to the '70 models. There may have been a bit less seat--of-the -pants power in the top end, i.e. highway passing situations. This affected quarter mile times to a small degree, but otherwise very comparable performance levels.

    Interesting reference to Joe Mondello (Dr. Oldsmobile)...but since most of the information about his true influence on GM's efforts in the day are now lost, you should have explained the reference to how he 'detrimentally affected' horsepower in 1971 for Oldsmobile. After all, he is probably the brightest (and most-knowledgeable) Oldsmobile engine guy on the planet...making more 'cylinder head power' than any other could (including GM's own engineers). Not sure if he is still with Victory motorcycles still...but his time pretty-much came to an end with GM in 1975, when they stopped the 455-cu-in production.

    W30 cars were cool but that seems to be all your hear about in the olds line.Any regular 442 with just a few basic mods could run with a W30. Again not knocking the W30, wish I had one.

    • @williamdawkins4062
      @williamdawkins4062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The w30 has lots of items that make it faster like the free-flowing cast-iron exhaust manifolds lighter weight car , A different cam! And a 830cfm carburetor that makes all the difference. The horsepower specs everybody quotes from the factory are a lie , they were arbitrarily specked those numbers to keep the engineers from getting in trouble from GM corporate. I got a 1972W 30 sitting in the barn

    Net power is not a drop in power produced, it's a more honest reflection of what the engine produced in the vehicle. Now the drop in compression, that was real loss of power 😭

    I didn't watch the whole thing, but there was a little misinformation here. I have a '71 W-30 I've had since I was a junior in high school in '86. The red fender wells were not "a 442 staple for years". Those are specific to the W-30, and the W-27 option was not an aluminum differential cover, it was the complete housing.
