Upgraded Harbor Freight Bead Roller-updated

- Reinforced and motorized my Harbor Freight bead roller with an ebay Bodine gearmotor and Dayton reversing switch. Running 4:1 sprocket ratio with no. 35 chain. This 39 rpm motor and gear arrangement is giving 9.75 rpm at the beader dies. A spritz of paint and we'll call 'er done!
Questions about how I wired this. Dec 2018 I have uploaded the schematic here: www.mgertech.co...
Your two flange stiffeners you welded on the back. I did the same but I put a bar with slots on each end that slides on the stiffeners I then drilled and tapped the center of the bar.so a bolt would fit through the frame slot. I use it for a guide for the metal but it adds a lot of strength to the arms. Thanks you very much for your demo.
Great idea Steve, thanks!
FINALLY!!! Finally I watch 1 of these bead roller video's where the author includes the electric motor, where to find it, it's HP & RPM's. Finally I can quit wasting my time with the other clowns that think they've reinvented the wheel. A big THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome. Just a word of caution, make sure the motor you get is reversible, not all Bodines or Daytons are, don't ask how i know this 😁
@@mgermca I've found a few gear reduction motors with a seperate speed controller on Amazon, but none tell their shaft size, lol
Good looking mod. My bead roller is so old it came from JD2 before he was ever selling benders. 1987. Its same style as HF but 1/2" plate and little more precision on the shaft mounts. I'm going to motorize it now that I'm using it more. Your video is good help on that thought.
Wow! Very well done! Impressive! Thanks for the video and the encouragement you provide others. Would not mind hearing your narration about the trials and tribulations you might have overcome. Again, thanks!
Really nice job on the roller! I use the same model at work and was just looking for ways to improve it, and you definitely nailed it. I would have liked to have heard a little commentary on your improvements during the video, but otherwise it was really inspiring for my own project. Thanks!
I definitely recommend a quick release clamp for adjusting the dies instead of turning the handle, of all the mods on TH-cam I have only seen one or two who upgraded the adjustment mechanism, Jere Kirkpatrick is one. , I enjoyed watching you great modification.
That is amazing. It just makes me more determined to put my everlast plasma cutter on a cnc sooner rather than later.
You did a fantastic job building and demoing that bead roller. Forget what the other's criticize and really have probably never done anything with metal or tool fabrication.
Thx very much Michael
Your welcome
I agree. You made some really nice modifications. I will follow your ideas and weld some up with my everlast. They would make very good additions
I love that setup with the press to make rings. I've gotta get my everlast out and weld me up something like that. That is so cool
I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that heavily modified and/or reinforced this bead roller. We did the same idea but approached it completely different. After seeing your approach, yours is a lot better. Your changes didn't change the size of metal you can use like mine almost did. I used 2" box steel that's 1/4" thick. The way this roller is designed, the upper arm is the weakest part of the tool so I ran a piece of box steel from on end to the other on the upper jaw making sure I didn't interfere with any part that was adjustable. I welded my bead roller to a 1/2" thick diamond plate. The plate was given to me by a good friend where it was used to cover a trench in the road where some form of street work was going on. He happened to stop by my shop with his work truck which had 2 plates sitting in the back which he gave me both plates which I eventually turned into small workbenches. After welding the bead roller to one end of my small, heavy work bench I welded a piece of 2" box steel from the top of the work bench to the end of 2" box steel that I had welded onto the upper jaw of the bead roller. It's far from winning any beauty contests but it has no problem putting a bead into anything that I ask it to. I really like adding an electric motor to it. I am going to do that to kine
thanks for showing lots of detail in your build and the motor tag as well. great work
Thanks for your comments. Yes Granger would be one possibility. I bought my no. 35 chain and sprockets at the local farmer/tractor supply, eBay is a good alternative, just do a search for "no. 35 sprockets".
That really is nice. Great work. I might give that a try. Im sure it won't look as nice, but if it functions as well. Id be extremely happy with it.
Thx SB!
No, I'm sorry I don't. I had thought about it but the variance in motor configurations makes it kind of difficult to cover all the bases. I just hit on a particular motor on ebay and once I had it in my hands I just mocked it up and McGyver'd it on there. The purpose of the clip was to inspire others to have a go.
Best HF bead roller mod on YT. Thanks for the great ideas! Faved and Subbed
Thx!
Excellent upgrade good professional job couldn't of done it better my self.
Hi, no sorry it was all pretty much done on the fly. It depends on which motor you have and you adapt it accordingly.
Well done , Very nice job . One of the nices converts ive seen .
Very nice work, thanks for putting this on the tube.
id like to know more about where you got your gears, and the foot and top switch... great job !!!
Bryan Shane Hi Bryan thanks for your comments. All info is in past posts below, cheers:
I bought my no. 35 chain and sprockets at the local farmer/tractor supply, eBay is a good alternative, just do a search for "no. 35 sprockets
.....footswitch from ebay (linemaster Clipper 632S), Dayton Drum switch also from ebay. I chose the motor and sprockets to get about 7 rpm at the dies
Do ebay searches for 'dayton 2X442A drum switch' 'bodine 1/9 gearmotor' 'linemaster clipper 632s' The best source for sprockets and chain is your local farm/tractor supply or bearing/energy transfer supplier.
+Bryan Shane Hi BShane, read the comments and responses below, I have provided the sources for just about everything you need in them. That said, I got almost everything on eBay at discounted prices without having to deal with 'we don't sell retail' industrial suppliers . No. 35 gears and chain from Tractor Supply or eBay.
I am using the standard OEM Bodine 12.5 MFD starter capacitor and it works great!
some kinda stop would be awesome...so you could do beads in increments without measuring...what an awesome build
Yep, gotta work on that, thx!
No sorry no plans available, 3inch square post , base with wheels from Home Depot, motor from ebay, ( see tag closup in the vid clip) chain and sprockets from the farmer supply locally, footswitch from ebay (linemaster Clipper 632S), Dayton Drum switch also from ebay. I chose the motor and sprockets to get about 7 rpm at the dies.
watched many videos on this yours is the best made thanks for sharing the details.
Thx JG!
Nice turnout. Thanks for posting details.
In the description of the vid clip above, or in the closeup of the motor plate at 2:48 in the clip. Good luck.
Nice man its the best one I see yet with a 1ph motor And looks legit. Nice drum switch for fwd and rev. Were u purchase sprocket? Grainger catalog?
Beautiful machine! Thank you for sharing. Great attention to detail.
Absolutely outstanding.
Thanks H.A.!
SWEET!!! How much did the motor, chain, gears and electrical components cost?
eBay stuff mostly. Bought the HF bead roller on Kijiji locally for 80$. Bodine gearmotor eBay 110$. Dayton drum switch eBay 40$. Linemaster Clippper footswitch eBay 25$. Sprockets & chain, local farmers supply 45$. Altogether around 300$ not counting the wheels and stand.
i like how the 4x4 dudes always pipe up but don't put up. sorry dude but you can roll a lot of depth in one pass and end up with a flat piece if you pre-stretch properly. as far as the switch being overkill, if it works than what exactly is the issue? thank you for sharing looks like a great tool.
Sorry no pland for the stand, you just need a base, a post, drill some holes in the HF main plate and bolt 'er up.
very nice job. doing one myself. just bought the bead roller. looking on ebay for the motor. found the same one but pricey. found the controller and a very nice foot pedal of cast aluminum. how heavy a sheet will it bead? I need to do some 18 gauge for floor pans and trunk area etc. thanks and great job once again.
gary fraser well I won my motor on ebay today. 1/8 hp bodine ac 115v 8rpm and "341inch pounds". should do the trick nicely.
gary fraser Cool! Let us know when you've got 'er built and the vid clip is posted.
Very nice job! Thanks for your time and effort.
I have one of the same . I put a dc gearmotor off of a mig welder on it but its not near as nice as yours. Great job .
Hey GP1000 didja retain the variable speed from the welder? If you did that's way better than mine!
Yes i did
That's a great idea, where'd ya source the motor? a dead welder?
yes
The dies do not move in and out on the HF machine. It's a possible future mod though.Thanks.
Great job! Are you going to sell any kits? Let me know. Thanks!
Very nice, similar to what I have done to mine. Thanks!
Great job!! and better than half the cost
Fantastic job well done!!
Thank you for sharing this video.
There will always be those whom not knowing what to do, try to teach!!
But, ignored their venom spilling self hating mouth!!
Great job my friend! !
Where do you buy all of this good stuff thks
Hi PH, all fab'd here in the home shop and from eBay. Thx
was your motor made to be reversible? the bodine I bought is not reversible from what I have been told. says it will damage the bearing plate in the gear box. I have tried the bead roller though and it works great but just in forward lol beads 16 gauge steel and .100" aluminum. will cut it too with the cutting dies. happy with it so far . needs some paint and a handle yet.my stand is on wheels like yours. it has to be as my garage is pretty small and everything has to be movable.
gary fraser You're right, it's best to get a reversible motor. I went through the same thing, some of the Bodines are not reversible. Post a clip?
nice work, do you have the plans for the stand you made? I have the HF bead roller now I need to make a stand for it.
nice work. whats left of the HF one? the rods and rollers? lol
excelent works, i like his design
Sorry to bother... I can't read the torque or the ratio. Can you tell me please.
Hi Randy,
The chain ratio is in the description of the video above. 4:1 .
The link I provided you yesterday has ALL the Bodine motors' specs.
I clearly stated yesterday and in the descrption above that the motor I used is the 39 rpm motor ON THAT WEBPAGE. ALL THE SPECS for the motor are there on the Bodine webpage that I linked including TORQUE, GEAR RATIO, AMP DRAW ETC as well as the wiring diagram to set it up to reverse. Sorry man I can't make it any simpler for you.
I also recommend that you read ALL the comments below for more information. Cheers!
Awesome on the HF bead roller does one of the wheels go in and out or are they stuck ? Can you off set the dies ?
I'm having trouble seeing the numbers on your motor. Can you send me the link where you purchased it.
Thx
Randy
Hi Randy. There is a close-up of the motor tag at the 2:45 point of the video. My source for the motor, switch and foot pedal was eBay.
It's the 39 rpm motor here, very expensive if you buy it new.
www.bodine-electric.com/products/ac-parallel-shaft-gearmotors/34r-wx-series-parallel-shaft-ac-gearmotor/
@mgermca thank you... yeah, it's not cheap.
@@mgermca what was the ratio on yours? I can't read it.
Sorry, youtube wont allow the posting of links in the comments section.
Do ebay searches for 'dayton 2X442A drum switch' 'bodine 1/9 gearmotor' 'linemaster clipper 632s' The best source for sprockets and chain is your local farm/tractor supply or bearing/energy transfer supplier. Good luck!
133 thumbs down? People are idiots. Anyway looks great, what do you think you have in It money wise? Not including the best roller.
Thx AD, eBay stuff mostly. Bought the HF bead roller on Kijiji locally for 80$. Bodine gearmotor eBay 110$. Dayton drum switch eBay 40$. Linemaster Clippper footswitch eBay 25$. Sprockets & chain, local farmers supply 45$. Altogether around 300$ not counting the wheels and stand.
I like it. A lot. But it looks like it may cost just as much as a factory motorized unit by the time I'm done. You know I can't get a gearmotor like that for 80 bucks. If I did they'd shaft me on shipping I'm sure. Ebay has gone to hell.
Yep TBB1, it's eBay and a-holes like me that give out the motor model no. in their youtube videos. But don't give up, something'll come your way. Just have to get some other sort of reversable motor off of something, the rest of the stuff is pretty run of the mill.
Maybe something like this.....have to sure its reversible though
www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors/AC-Gearmotors/AC-Gearmotors/28-RPM-230-VAC-1-12-HP-BALDOR-INLINE-GEARMOTOR-5-1889.axd
I'll keep looking.
I take it that is a motor starter for the footswitch to work? if so what type thanks.
really nicely done
thats okay but how much money are you now invested into this 200 tool would you have been just better off buying mitler bros?
The cheapest Mittler bros unit I see on their website is 795$US, I bought the HF beader new un-used on Kijiji and sourced the gearmotor and overkill reversing switch from eBay. I have less than half of 750$US in this. Feel free to read the previous comments below where this is discussed. Cheers!
Very nice work
nice!!! do yo have still ebay links when did you buy the parts please? Thanks!! :)
How much was the kit? I would love to convert my bead roller. What is the kit you used?
a $255 motor on a harbor freight tool?
dont get me wrong I use em too
about 80$US on eBay
I have a 1/30 hp DC power bodine motor 90 volts .37 amp 10.4 rpm can I do same set up as you did if I use dc power supply for power ?
I am no expert in motor horsepower but the smallest motor I have seen for powering one of these things posted anywhere on the 'net is 1/15hp.
DC will make it easier to vary the speed though.
Maybe do a Google search - lots of sources

q bien siempre quise ver un tutoriales de estas máquinas q tan útiles gracias x compartir lo tutoriales
Hellow, what is the ratio the gear,i don't see, thank's nice work.
In the description above........
Motor tag at 2:45....
I really like what you've accomplished with the bead roller upgrade. Would you be willing to either share or sell your plans so I could build one? How can I contact you?
Thanks for your comments. See previous comments and answers. All of the parts were made by eye/rule of thumb after I acquired the motor. I suggest you get a motor first, there are too many configurations of motor to be able to generalize, and make your adaptation accordingly. The video is for inspiration only. Cheers!
We want to buy this machine
good job, useful tool to have
Great job mate !!!!
Think you could could get me a wire diagram for this. My buddy is trying to recreate it and we are having troubles with it getting the wiring done right
Hi Ski+, I have just uploaded my wiring diagram here. www.mgertech.com/SCHEMATIC.pdf The link is also added to the description in the header above.
Wiring link in the description above.
Bodine wiring diagram on the webpage www.bodine-electric.com/products/ac-parallel-shaft-gearmotors/34r-wx-series-parallel-shaft-ac-gearmotor/
seria bueno que explicara lo que puede realizar la persona con la maquina de modo extenso
can you show how you wired the drum switch to the motor ? The terminals on how to hookup the wiring is confusing
Hi Brian, depends on what motor you have but you might try the info here:
www.industrial-electronics.com/motor_control/3h_Reversing-Motors-Drum-Switch.html
same motor as in your video. Not sure how you wired up the 4 wires out of the motor to the drum s/w
BS, send me a PM here on TH-cam and I'll get a labelled pic to you.
mgermca
do you sell a kit to do this?
@@bobbys2160 Wiring link in the description above.
very nicely done, godbless
Can I get some details on the foot control? I ordered the other stuff already, Just need to get a foot controller.
+RewT Customs yes the footswitch I used is a momentary switch Linemaster 632-s ( www.linemaster.com/ ) lots of them on eBay
There are other manufacturers and models, make sure you get a momentary switch and that it can handle your motor's amperage.
Any electrical supply house will have one. Get one with a cover to prevent accidental stepping on it.
hi after watching this video last night I found a bodine motor 1/9 hp not sure how many rpm yet for 58 bucks new in box on ebay I seen a commit below that said OEM Bodine 12.5 MFD starter capacitor does that come with motor?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Probably would be a good question for the vendor. Also make sure it is a reversible motor. Some are not reversible, don't ask how I know this :-)
i have the same motor and drum switch but im having trouble with the wiring part is there anyway you could post a diagram of how you did yours ?
Hi JC, I have just uploaded my wiring diagram here. www.mgertech.com/SCHEMATIC.pdf The link is also added to the description in the header above.
Wiring diagram on the Bodine webpage www.bodine-electric.com/products/ac-parallel-shaft-gearmotors/34r-wx-series-parallel-shaft-ac-gearmotor/
NICE and love it!
Outstanding! Thanks
Hello, there's any drawings or plans for this modification?
Hi, no sorry it was all pretty much done on the fly. It depends on which motor you have and you adapt it accordingly.
Thanks!
mgermca what size sprocket did you use ?
This is all relative and depends on your motor speed. My target was approximately 10 rpm at the dies. My motor shaft rpm is 39 rpm. To get 10 rpm at the dies I had to reduce the speed by a factor of 4. So 10T/40T is what I used. I could have used 11T/44T, 12T/48T, 15T/60T. As you can imagine, if you are not using a 39 rpm motor these numbers mean nothing, except for the 10 rpm at the dies target..
You thinking about selling the parts as a kit?
+Andrew Wilson No sorry AW the vid clip is to encourage you to have a go.
+Andrew Wilson Thx AW, no kit, sorry.
Nice job.
I would like to buy and payment method, because I live in Brazil. aguardo.
Sorry Paulo, this one's not for sale and i don't make them. The video is for inspiration only.

specs on the motor and gearing please.
Hi, read the description above and watch the vid again, there is a shot of the motor ID plate at 2:44
hey would you build one that i can buy i have the bead roller but would love to buy your whole kit motor stand parts etc?
+Richard Tringali Hi RT, no sorry, I have moved onto other projects, see them here on my youtube channel
