Hi, I started in 1980 to do this job, we made accessories for trucks and even cars, then the demand for plastic in the sector caused the production system to change. currently my company still produces truck accessories but 90 percent of them are made of plastic. I put these old machines aside and when I retire I plan to go back to using them, it's my passion.

Ron if you look at the motor controller for your bead roller, it may have a provision for an external variable speed control. You might be able to wire that variable input to a tig pedal so you can control the speed with your foot instead of pulsing the existing pedal. Your metal shaping skills are amazing to watch.

I’ve used a 1940’s(so it seemed) era hand cranked bead roller in the USAF as an airframe repairman, but nothing like your masterful shaping. The stretcher/ shrinker really works wonders and was fun to use also. You look like you’re having a blast creating such beautiful “artwork”. Thank You!

Thank you for the kind words. I took a class from Lazze perhaps 12 years ago, and I was so impressed with all he could accomplish with a Bead Roller. We have stayed in touch ever since.
thanks for sharing your knowledge Ron. I purchased my JS bead roller 9 or 10 yrs ago. I don`t use it every day, but I`d be lost without it. I love how versatile it is. It`s not the cheapest machine out there, especially when you start loading the shopping card with tooling, but it`s well worth it imo. It`s strudy as heck and it will take a beating. If you take a little more time and do a few more passes, it will shape 16ga with a smile.

@@RonCovell I`m in the Netherlands. We actually met years ago when you were over at Johan`s shop for a 2 or 3 day course. I purchased mine directly from JS. Very nice dealing with them and very helpfull too. I`m surprised it took so long to get it onto the US market... Anyways, I hope you enjoy it as I do and keep sharing your experience for many more years. 👍

I presume you are asking about the fender (since there are many demos on the video).
I would figure 10 or 12 hours.

That's the first time that I've seen an adjustable angle on the "head" of a bead roller. Very nice feature.

What could you do for thicker aluminum like 3mm or thicker?
Different dies exert different forces against the frame of the machine. Large beads take some of the most force, but the Round Over dies much less so. I have done some Rounding Over on 3mm material, but to bead it would take a beefier machine.

Extremely nice. Unfortunately not really financially available to us commoners. You do excellent work my friend, then again you could probably make that fender by pounding a cat against a piece of flat stock ☺️
Thank you very much! I know that the bead roller I am demonstrating on is too expensive for most amateurs, but even an affordable bead roller could do most of what I show in the video.
I don't know if I could make the fender by pounding with a cat, but I probably could do it by pounding with a bat!

I hope you have extra blankets for the "dog house". I know that is where I would be if I bought something quite expensive, whether I show her or not. I am not into sheet metal but into steel, fabrication, 4M long 15hp lathe (MT5 tailstock) and 2 decent size milling machines. Also a mechanic with a 2 post hoist and lots of tools. But I think the wife has given up on me buying/bartering (sneaking in) extra tools and equipment. I am 72 yrs old, supposedly retired (but neighbours and others keep giving me challenges to make/repair things I have never done before - do they care - no!!!) and I think I have a very tolerant wife. But your missus - only you know what you can get away with. But Ron's skills are 2nd to none. Can't do what he does but really admire his skills. It shows when a person in any field has a passion for what they do. They don't profess to know it all but aren't scared from a challenge. Might take one or two (or three) goes at it but they don't give up and the end result is excellent. PS. I am in Land Down Under.
Many times through my career, I have approached my wife, expressing my 'need' for an expensive new tool. Depending on our finances, she generally has gone along with this program.
Several years ago, my wife, who loves working with fabric, said "Honey, I need a serger" (an expensive 'tool' for edging fabric). What could I say, when she uses the same logic that I do?
@@RonCovell haha. In our house we do bargaining on “shoe money”. Whatever I spend on tools, she gets to spend equally on shoes. Inevitably, I need more tools to build a bigger shoe closet….

I would guess 10 or 12 hours to build the fender, if I was un-interrupted.

I can't say why, but many people have reported they feel relaxed when watching my videos. Maybe it's because I have a soft voice. Imagine how different it would be if I was yelling!

What kind of welding TIG machine you used very nice job
I used a Miller Dynasty 210 TIG welder for this project. I also use the Miller Diversion 180, which is more affordable.

What does the wire do, and how does it reinforce the fender?
Yes, the wire is used to strengthen the fender edge. The bending strength of steel increases as the cube of the thickness, so for 1mm steel sheet, wrapping it around a 3mm wire makes the edge about 25 times stiffer.
This was common practice for car fenders up through the mid 1930's.

Great video on how to use the bead roller. You made the sample fender out of 20 gage. In reality, a fender would be 20 gage, or in some cases 19 gage. You said the max steel material for the roller is 18 gage. Would have been interesting to see the sample made with 18 gage to see the performance of the roller in a more common use.
You bring up a good point. I used 20-gauge steel mostly because it's so easy to form, but it would have been good to do a couple of the demonstrations using thicker material, to better show the capabilities of the machine.

Yes, this is an expensive machine, and not a lot of home craftsmen can afford to buy one. Nevertheless, you can do much the same work with a hand-operated bead roller, and many clever people on TH-cam have motorized their inexpensive machines. Here's one example:
