    My next door neighbor has a 2014 Tesla Model S. After a bit over 300K miles the battery "died" he went to Tesla and they said it would be around $20K to replace or around $15K to recondition. Instead he went to the Electrified Garage in Pompano Beach and they did a reconditioning for 5K with a 1 year warranty. That was about a year ago and he is still driving the car today. BTW, there's a place in TX that you can ship your car to them and they will recondition your battery for around $3K. Shipping round trip would be around $1400. One final note. It's just like you said, going to the dealer is too expensive, so you go to the Aftermarket. Most of the cars with dead batteries are cars have well over 300K miles. Reality is that most Gas powered cars don't last 300K miles so we're kind of talking about the same thing here. Personally I drive close to 50K miles a year and an electric car saves my well over $1000 a month in fuel. After a decade those savings are in excess of $100K, so if I had to pay $20K to replace my battery it would still be worth it. Truth is however that batteries are getting cheaper. Hell I could go to Alibaba RIGHT NOW and order all 7104 cells for just 48 cents each! What's that? $3400 plus maybe $1500 for shipping? Sure you still have to pay someone to do the work, but even that should only be a couple thousand. To top it off, these new cells have a higher energy density, so the pack would actually have a higher energy rating. PLUS once everything is said and done there are LOTS of companies that pay between $300-$1000 just for used lithium battery scrap for recycling.

      So it's unusual to measure car repairs by weight, IE tons. So how many in numbers of cars are you talking about?? As recorded here, batteries are normally rebuilt for a fraction of the 20k replacement. Also worth noting that I have never had a car last 300k miles. So whilst I don't doubt that some cars last longer than 300k. But you can hardly say 300k is a short lifespan. Also it's clear the newer Model 3 and Y last longer.

    My favorite repair story from a couple years ago was when my 91 Harley starter went out. I took it to a little shop about 5 miles from home . Young guy at the counter yelled "hey dad how long for a Harley starter?" Dad in the back yelled back " four o'clock" . Cost me 70 bucks!

      My wife's Matrix had the same issue - repair shop had a used Toyota starter on the shelf and put it in for $90 in 30 minutes. It's been working great ever since, and that's got to be 10 years ago.

    EV manufacturers claimed battery packs would outlive the vehicles, reality is tons of still perfectly good EVs will get scrapped due to replacement batteries being impossible to find for a reasonable price beyond the warranty period. And even during the warranty period, people may get screwed by sub-par salvage or refurb battery. This may be the beginning of the end for proprietary monolithic battery packs. For EVs to be sustainable, there needs to be modular standards so packs can be replaced one faulty module at a time for 1/10th the price.

      I've been thinking along similar lines, we need multiple smaller battery packs in EVs, and standardization, and standard charging systems.
      It's still early days for the technology, and things will have to improve, but until they do EVs are for early adopters and not ready for the mass market.

      @@latitudeash Even within the 8yr warranty period, they will find a way to blame the owner for the failure. That's just how car manufacturers work. This is why so many Tesla owners sell their vehicles at the first signs of charging problems.

      Throwing things away & developing til grass & trees only exist in museums is how we save the planet. Your Harley will still rev when every tesla manufacturered returns to dust.

      That's fine, but be real. In the next few months, you're going to be replacing everything rubber and/or not metal, but still likely metal, on it as you drive it more. A chain of failures and leaks.
      All the lines, fuel, brake, injectors, carbs, gaskets, pumps.
      It's drivable for now, but this whole comment is a weak boomer take. You're about to drop 5-10k very soon. (Not that it's not worth it, or not a sweet ride), but this isn't the argument that is going to hold water against what we both despise.
      I have to ask, if you've ever watched a TH-cam vid (even just here on Hoovie's channel), of buying a an old classic that has sat for years, decades, that drove fine for 500 miles, only to require major servicing after everything that had been stagnant started moving again and taking on loads.
      Ignorant and short-sighted as fuck.

    I disagree with April on 1 thing:
    Batteries in cellphones haven’t become better over time. They have only become larger and are now basically not replaceable anymore.
    Coming from the automotive industry, I can also say that “simply” becoming certified for EV repairs isn’t that simple.
    Besides special education regarding high voltage system work, there’s also the CI compliance and workspace regulations!
    You’re (usually) not allowed to work on EV within X amount of feet from flammable materials, standard cars etc., making space requirements more difficult.
    In addition you need new, very expensive tools.
    The CI clearance, tools and education can be around US$ 400000.- for a small repair shop with 4 mechanics!
    Additionally you have the issue of handling (= getting rid of) the old batteries, as well as insurance issues should some customer’s battery ignite.

    People just don't properly maintain their battery with a few simple rules: 1) Never leave the battery at full charge for long periods of time; 2) Vary the charge level; 3) long time storage (>1 day) keep the battery SOC between 50-80%; 4) if the battery's thermal control is not that great avoid fast charging beyond 240 volt chargers. I'm still on my original 2011 Nissan Leaf battery (no thermal control) and it still can be fully charged in all modules with the normal range degradation (right now about 65% the original range). The car has gone through 3 accessory batteries (regular car battery) and 4 key fob batteries in that time so far.

      I was using my Galaxy Note 3 (released 2013) until October last year. Was on it's 3rd battery...which costs $10 from eBay and can be replaced in 30 seconds with a fingernail.

    I still have my Nokia brick. It's the only phone that operates perfectly when I'm working underground. It's been dropped hundreds of times, you just put it back together and it's happy again. It's been dropped in water many times and once dry it's fine. I'm 49 and I'm fairly sure one day my son will receive it in my will. Not just the brick obviously. Or hopefully not just a Nokia brick lol.

      The reason the Nokia works well underground is because it utilizes shorter wave bands. It's probably 600-800mhz. Most 3/4G phones work in the 1200-1900Mhz arena, so longer waves which travel further away from the towers, but they also are much more easily disrupted, by things like brick walls and dirt. Unfortunately though TMobile WILL be shutting down the last 2G network very soon. It was supposed to happen in April, but they've delayed it.

    I'm sure battery technology and aftermarket replacements will improve. I can't imagine junking a car after only 10 years of ownership. We're still driving the 2005 Corolla that we bought new and it's parked beside our 2006 Matrix. The odometers on both are around the 300,000 mark and they still look and run great.

      The battery will eventually improve, but there will always be something else to replace that is so difficult and catastrophic to get to that you have no choice but to junk it. Manufacturers want to get cars to a point that they're like cell phones. 5 to 8 years, and you turn it in for a new one.

    We already live in a disposal car society. Shopping for my daughter's first car, lots fulls of 100s of great condition mid/late 2000s Kias, Hyundais and Nissans with bad transmissions and engines... And this was during 2021/2022 used car price craziness and they still weren't worth fixing.

      Yeah, we had three young drivers within a 3 year period and for a first car I bought them a 1997 Mercedes C230. They drove it for 5 years and I was comfortable that it was safe enough and not too fast for low skill drivers. Now that they have experience we share 3 Tesla’s among 5 drivers and if I had to do it all over again I wouldn’t change a thing.

      True that we already live in a disposable car society, but a new engine/transmission isn't going to cost you 20K so the life of an ICE vehicle is going to be much longer than an EV. Most EV's are going to be mechanically totaled in 10-15 years, but most ICE vehicles are still on the road for 20+ years.

      Evs have much better battery management systems. I drive a 10 year old tesla model s (2014, model s 60) it has 130k miles on it. From factory in 2014 it promised 208 miles. When I first bought it in 2021 I range test it and got 212 miles. I have in 2024 gotten 210 miles. I'll admit I don't every single time, if I drive crazy, or weather is really bad I get maybe 10-20% less, but still on road trips, I get 95-100% initial promised range. I've put 70k miles on it in 3 years and road tripped from sd to humboldt. Back down, over to tucson. And back to sd, nothing but great times.

      Based on the history milage tesla, you are looking at 250,000 miles. So better make plans to replace it or to buy a new car. My car is near 20 years old and it's future replacement is anther sub $3,000 old car.

I bought a Prius with nearly a quarter million miles on it and even I don't feel comfortable buying a decently used EV for the reason it might randomly total itself in repair costs.

    battery tech has already improved since these early model S, but yeah we need some government mandate to 1/ have a battery capacity meter like an odometer that is mandatory and needs to appear in all sales documents 2/ force builder to do modular repairs on batteries: i.e. design the packs so modules can be replaced instead of the whole thing OR make the full replacement cheap

      This is already possible. They prefer to replace whole pack so they can evaluate it all, find any bad cells remove them. Replace them and make a proper refurb that won't die in a few months. Some chose to replace just the "brick" which there is up to 9 in a model s, replacing the brick is reliable. And part cost about 1k labor depends where you live. But even shipped cross country to gruber or unplugged performance, with a few thousand in labor and shipping its under 5k, not 20k+ nightmare often touted in media. Even 20k is about same as many fancy foreign cars engines to be fixed in around 150k miles

    I think the same thing happens with engines or even transmissions now. Any older European vehicle is as expensive or more than a battery even when replacing with a used part.

    Model 3/y can get full battery replacement for about $6500. I think the company is called recell.
    Cheaper than some a lot of crate engines I've replaced.
    I don't know much about the company though, bit they do warranty the replacement.

    New ICE vehicles are disposable as well, especially the smaller cars. GM's Trax went from an already small 1.4L turbo 4 to an even smaller 1.2L turbe 3 cylinder- in a larger vehicle with the redesign. these engines are running maxxed out just during normal driving and are generally considered unrepairable.

    this is the reason why i want to make laws that basically require support for vehicles and large appliances sold for atleast 30 years, and after manufacturers MUST release part details and repair instructions. MORE OVER requiring standardization of components and publishing specifications that can be used to develop aftermarket parts for the vehicles.

    There *WAS* supposed to be an option to rent a battery and have it replaced at a service station when the life was up. There are recycling facilities popping up that take your old batteries and extract the metals to make a recycled battery.

    The solution has already been found. Insurance companies are now pricing tesla's extremely high or refusing them altogether which closes the loop on cost of ownership. Simple capitalism at work.

      Why? Insurance doesn’t care what your out of warranty repair costs. Insurance is based on vehicle safety and theft. Tesla is #1 in safety and extremely low theft.

      The difference between my wife’s 2012 Mazda 3 and my 2022 Kia EV6 is less than $10 per month for insurance. Her car was originally approximately $18k and mine was approximately $52k sticker price. Being 10 years newer, mine certainly has a higher residual value. Sure, my car is not a Tesla, but it is still an EV.

    I do not understand why people are so shocked about the $20,000 replacement costs of a battery. I had my engine locked up on my 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8l and if the Hyundai did not cover any of the cost it would have been a $20,000 engine replacement since they do not make that engine anymore. They had to build the engine at the dealership and then install it. I am sure any can where they do not make the engine anymore would be a similar cost

      The batteries were supposed to be recycled by Tesla, Tesla was supposed to be nearly closed loop by now, requiring no mined metals. Instead, the guy tasked with that, JB Straubel, quit after Tesla had not managed to recycle the materials in a single battery in 12 years. He owns his own recycling company now.

      And he and others recylce nearly 100% of all past ev batteries. Their only issue is so FEW ev batteries have died, its early bolts, roadsters etc. Which can be fixed at gruber motors in roadster case and model s and x can be fixed there, as well as electified garage, unplugged performance, ev republic, reel deel ev, etc and if one isnt near you shipping the car to them is still often cheaper then buying entirely new battery. If it does need replaced it can be done more affordably with refurb or crash damaged totaled cars that sell healthy packs (cars totaled for vandalism etc) ​@@criticalevent

      A lithium battery can be damaged/degraded really fast for a number of reasons. People with battery powered mowers usually ruin the battery right away because they know nothing about how to maintain them and keep them healthy for maximum life.

    all evs have a master service disconnect{MSD} this disconnects the battery so it can be safely serviced i learned this in my fire dept training. there are guides that show the locations and disconnect procedures

    So, my besty got a new Macan S in 2015. Drove it hard, serviced it hard, to 145k miles. At 145k, engine started making a slight tick. Tick got louder and louder. Took it to dealership, engine is toast. New engine is $20k. Macan is totaled. What’s different here than the Tesla? This isn’t specific to EVs…

      @@2009spoc some maybe. This is an alusil block with a plasma arc spray coating. Once the coating is scored it must be replaced. Again, I only chose to comment because of the similarities here. If the engine could just be rebuilt, I would not have commented.
      If you want ALL the details, the ticking was only a failing turbocharger. Before investing $12-15k in removing the engine to replace both turbos and the “while you’re there’s”, everyone figured it prudent to scope the cylinders for scoring first. Guess what we found…the end of the road.

    I've been driving a 1972 Ford Pinto Squire wagon for over 35 years. I have replaced the engine once. Did the work myself. Didn't cost much. I've also been driving a 1964 Ford Fairlane for almost 20 years. I bought that with no engine or transmission. I pulled an engine and transmission out of a '71 Ford LTD and put in the Fairlane. Still runs great. There are over 20 different engines that will fit in that car. I may wind up dong a V8 swap on the Pinto. Unless they get totally destroyed or rust away (and cars don't rust in AZ, where I am) older cars are literally immortal.

    An EV is an appliance, You can't think about it like a traditional car. Its more like your fridge or your TV. The issue is the premium they charge does not support this model today. When someone designs an EV with a simple and affordable way to replace the battery then we can think about them more like a traditional car again.

Many retired car batteries are put to use in stationary situations as there is still a lot of life left. It depends on living situation...I have my own garage and don't drive that many miles so I'm better off owning my own. I know how it's been treated from the beginning.

    With recycling issues how many wreckiing yards today will balk at buying a vehicle with a battery that they are not equipped to remove and recycle? How far would they have to ship the large and heavy battery asstembly to a facility qualified to recycle it?

    There is no fixing any of the battery packs... we RC modelers knew this 15 years ago with our multicell Lipos... once one cell goes and starts showing balance problems... the others are not too far behind. the only solution is an entire pack. then the issue of the Motors and ESCs... ECS are the next thing to go. silicon carbide MOSFETs in them also have a finite life... and when one shorts or fails open inside... the rest quickly follow because they are often multiple devices that have been selected to match. ICE rules for one reason and one reason only... mechanical parts that can be replaced.

    lots of good battery info in this, and yes you can short term fix batteries by replacing individual cells but it will increase the rate of failure in other cells because you added new cells that are soo out of spec with the current cells. The only thing I'm baffled by is Elon didn't hide this, you knew you'd have to replace the battery pack and that the cost of that battery was almost half the cost of the car, so I'm just confused how its news.

    EV’s will end up in people’s driveways or on the street abandoned because the batteries are simply too expensive to replace and the wrecking yards won’t want to deal with the batteries. They’re a disposable vehicle for people with disposable income.

      @@aussie2uGA I’m m not sure about Aussi land antics, but we have transmission shops that will rebuild them. Rebuilding an EV battery still hasn’t taken place yet and because of the dangers likely never will.

      @@S2NAZ Newer transmissions are built with aluminum. You don’t rebuild, you replace. Those costs and labor push it over what the vehicle is worth.

    This is something I predicted as soon as EVs came out, I was familiar with Lion batteries from model helicopters. The electricity is cheap, but the cost of battery replacements likely costs more than just buying gas for 10 years.
    An average person spends about 2k per year on fuel so 22k for battery replacement is a bit more expensive than gas, and the electricity just costs extra.

    Batteries can now be fully recycled, broken bown to base minerals then used to remanufacture. Something does need to be done for the end consumer though.

    Batteries are getting recycled or repurposed. No one is throwing them away. I do agree that there needs to be a better aftermarket repair community to keep them going in order for them to be sustainable.

      Yes, I got some solar power station "deals" with used cells, apparently, because they quickly degraded and won`t hold a charge. And it`s wrong to sell people degraded, dangerous cells inside expensive products people depend on for emergency power. But they`re doing this as a way to dispose of them. And these products go in dumpsters usually.

      Do you know how much effort it takes to recycle a lithium battery? Agree repurposing is good - but if a battery has dead cells, as Hoovie mentioned, any repairs to it can't be trusted long term.

    10 years old, out of warranty. Send it to Electrified Garage. $3-5k vs $20k is a no brainer. Long term solution is an aftermarket replacement battery. You got the 🏦 and 🥚 🥚 to make them there's a market. I suggest prismatic batteries.
