When I was on vacation in Costa Rica I went exploring in a cave. Our guide led my family into a very small space. I started having a panic attack and kept telling the guide ‘Tengo mierda’ instead of ‘tengo miedo’. I didn’t know what mierda was until a year later! I never learned it in Spanish class! NOYFB NOYFB Very true! I was trying to figure out what it was about this channel that made it much more helpful than others I've seen and I realized that's part of it. She does exactly what my Spanish teacher in high school did, she speaks to us in Spanish to teach us it and only uses English when absolutely necessary like at the start just to let us know what the them of the lesson is today. And also her pace, I've learned, is one that is easier to follow than usual. This is super helpful.

eddluxe, soy americano está correcto, americano es el gentilicio de Estados Unidos de America. Podés usarlo tranquilamente, no estás cometiendo ningún error. Ante una duda consultá con la RAE, no con un canal de TH-cam.
Hay muchos libros que todavía tiene la expresión “soy americano” por eso creo que muchos estudiantes es correcto decirlo así. También en mi experiencia, depende de la actitud y la perspectiva del interlocutor. Pero es mejor decir algo como “soy estadounidense” o “soy de Estados Unidos” María, gracias por los vídeos. emanuel sandoval Well, I didn't know how to type accent marks at the time (I've never needed to until learning Spanish). Plus, I didn't think the word "ano" existed, so I typed it thinking it was ok. Many natives fail to type accent marks during informal chatting. Like "verguenza". It isn't a word, but it's understood to be "vergüenza". I thought "ano" was a similar case
The most embarrassing was when I told my friend ‘estoy embarrazada’ because I thought it meant ‘I’m embarrassed’. I tell you what....he sure did get quiet! 😂. I had to explain myself out of that one.

I’m 62 years old. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for 40 years (off and on). I’m going to give one more try. One problem I’m having is, I know a lot of words but I can’t put them together. And I translate. This listening exercises have helped tremendously. Thank you.
Once I was watching a sketch from MadTV. Long story short, one of the characters said to another, “Your name is not Pablo Pinche Picasso!” So, of course, I said, “Oh! I didn’t know that was his middle name!” Not long after, in my high school Spanish class, my teacher asked if anyone knew Picasso’s middle name. I yelled out, “PINCHE!” The Spanish-speakers in my class laughed and my teacher nervously laughed. I said it again and again like “What?? It’s ‘Pinche!’” After saying it about four times too many, I realized that that was not not NOT his middle name. I don’t remember what it actually is, but I do remember that it sure as heck ain’t that. 🤦🏾♀️
Although, "pinche" is not a bad word itself. It has several different meanings, one of them being a sort of "sous-chef". But no one ever uses that word when talking about cuisine, it just somehow became a swearing word haha. Definitely a funny mistake, that one of yours.

The most embarrassing mistake I ever made in Spanish was during my first trip to Mexico. I was just starting to learn Spanish. Fish in a restaurant was "pescado" and other seafood "mari"-something, couldn't exactly remember the rest of the word. Then I remembered having heard the word "maricones" somewhere. I still remember the stunned faces when I said, "si, me gustan pescado y maricones". Now I will never forget that the correct word for seafood is "mariscos".

@@chenanigans POR it is used to explain the cause or motive of something; while PARA it is used to refer to the purpose of an action. We do things FOR (POR) a cause TO (PARA) achieve a purpose.
The most embarrassing? When I first started I was in Colombia and I said to a guy at a bar..... "Como te llamo?" I think it sounded like "como te amo?" He suddenly seemed very uncomfortable. haha.

So, upon meeting my friend's mother for the VERY FIRST TIME, I got my words mixed up and said she looked "old" instead of Young... I was EXTREMELY EMBARRASSED! She laughed but i was truly upset with myself. '

Thanks for posting this. I am struggling with my Spanish and any help I can get is very welcome. I understand my wife when we talk , but any conversations with other friends and I find it difficult to hear the words at the speed they talk. I will soon be living in Colombia and I am sure my Spanish will improve out of necessity and being seeing and hearing Spanish used everywhere.

Ella me miró, ojos de par en par y de repente me di cuenta lo que había dicho. Dije " Lo siento...una taza de té, una taza de té. Jajaja
I can't really say that I used to make these mistakes, but some of them were learned later rather than earlier (e.g., "mudar" vs. "mover", how "otro/-a" does not take an indefinite article, ...). Other lessons you taught in this were more of a good reinforcement than anything else (e.g., how you shouldn't use "para" after "buscar"). One mistake that I used to make frequently, however, was a mistake of pronunciation. When I first started learning Spanish, I could not roll my Rs. It took me weeks, if not months, before I was finally able to do it and then, when I had finally mastered it, I was rather euphoric about it and wanted to roll my Rs on everything -- words with a single R and those with a double RR all received a trill of the tongue. I would often do this, without thinking, until one day someone told me that "pero"" was not "perro." The correction was given to me in Spanish, but I knew immediately what she was trying to tell me and vowed to reign in my R rolling from that point forward. My Rs are probably still a bit strong to this day, but at least I'm more aware of how little deviations in pronunciation can turn a "but" into a "dog."
I was in my early 20' when i went to a NY eve party with my PR freinds. we were laughing and drinking, people were speaking English and Spanish. During my first college semester of Spanish (I never took it in high school), I had to write my teacher an email. During the greeting part, I thought I would impress her with my awesome Spanish I knew: "Buenos tardes, Senora [nombre]! Como estaz? Me llama Jacob Kimble." Durante de mi primer semestre del español en la universidad (nunca lo tomé en la escuela secundaria) tenía que escribir un correo electrónico a mi maestra. Durante de la parte de saludo, creía que podría impresionar a mi maestra con el español que yo sabía: "Buenos tardes, Senora Raguse! Como estaz? Me llama Jacob Kimble."

I told her I had sangria instead of sangre. Another is I told her my face gets red so easily, and every time I get embarrassed. But I used embarazada. The worst was when I asked someone if they wanted a tray. Bandeja.. but I said bendeja. Which sounds like something else lol

Yeah I work in a factory with spanish people from different countries. I noticed some countries see words as bad and some dont. I'm sure my vocabulary is a mixture of different countries lol
Spoken Spanish here in the United States has many transliterations. It is taking on a look of its own seeing how it has not been standardized here, yet. I think it is going through the same thing as English did. American English is different enough to be seen as a different language from British, both spoken and written forms. Just my thoughts on it.

I'm a substitute teacher. My most embarrassing mistake I made in Spanish was in school when I told a group of 7th graders that I liked tamales de galleta (cookies tamales) instead of tamales se gallina (chicken tamales). The roars of laughter were immediate and repeated every time they saw me for a couple of years.

I know that's slang, I had a very good relationship with him but instead I said "Hola Cabron" Ohhhhh my gawd I was mortified!!! I apologized everyday for like a month!!! Great vid. At 2:22 (pedir), this reminded me that people in the US order food in restaurantes using "ordenar", which can mean to sort, to arrange, or to command. Even the wait staff asks "¿Qué van a ordenar?". They should be using pedir. Reply with "Voy a pedir ...".
After a little too much tequila at our favorite restaurant I meant to say, "Me gustaría helado para llevar. Puedes ponerlo en una casa rodando?" (I meant to say, "caja redonda." The waitress looked at me like I had two heads, then she started to laugh uncontrollably! Fortunately, we were friends with her and her husband, so while it was embarrassing, it was mostly just hilarious. We were all laughing until we had tears in our eyes.
A few years back when my spanish class was on a trip to Cádiz in spain we lived with host families, me and a friend lived with this really nice mother and her sons and i wanted to say that something was warm and i thought the word for that was "infierno"... so i basically swore infrom of her children... she was really sweet about it though and i did learn "caliente" and "calor" very quickly after that...

I've heard Spanish is a fast spoken language (the second fastest after Japanese as you've mentioned in another video), but never really hear how fast it is until you speak it out! One time I was trying to say that my dog was scared, only instead of saying “Tiene miedo,” I accidentally said “Tiene mierda.” My friend’s Spanish speaking mother got a good chuckle out of that.
I just found this channel a couple of days ago. Me gusta mucho tu enfoque. (did Google translate do that correctly?) Your lessons are concise and focused, presented with good examples and are very entertaining. I am already finding that I understand what you say in Spanish as you speak clearly and not overly fast. Now I will say "estadounidense." Also, I'm amazed that I understood almost every single word you said in Spanish because the pace at which you speak in these videos is great! If only native Spanish speakers used that pace in regular conversation it would make it a lot less intimidating for us learners. 😊

Podés usarlo tranquilamente, no estás cometiendo ningún error. Ante una duda consultá con la RAE, no con un canal de TH-cam.
Hay muchos libros que todavía tiene la expresión “soy americano” por eso creo que muchos estudiantes es correcto decirlo así. También en mi experiencia, depende de la actitud y la perspectiva del interlocutor. Pero es mejor decir algo como “soy estadounidense” o “soy de Estados Unidos” María, gracias por los vídeos. emanuel sandoval Well, I didn't know how to type accent marks at the time (I've never needed to until learning Spanish). Plus, I didn't think the word "ano" existed, so I typed it thinking it was ok. Many natives fail to type accent marks during informal chatting. Like "verguenza". It isn't a word, but it's understood to be "vergüenza". I thought "ano" was a similar case
The most embarrassing was when I told my friend ‘estoy embarrazada’ because I thought it meant ‘I’m embarrassed’. I tell you what....he sure did get quiet! 😂. I had to explain myself out of that one.

I’m 62 years old. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for 40 years (off and on). I’m going to give one more try. One problem I’m having is, I know a lot of words but I can’t put them together. And I translate. This listening exercises have helped tremendously. Thank you.
I once said "estoy embarazada" in Spanish class, when instead I should have said "estoy avergonzado." Suffice to say it was very embarrassing.
I think that your voice speaking Spanish is very clear and understandable for a novice Spanish learner.
Once I was watching a sketch from MadTV. Long story short, one of the characters said to another, “Your name is not Pablo Pinche Picasso!” So, of course, I said, “Oh! I didn’t know that was his middle name!” Not long after, in my high school Spanish class, my teacher asked if anyone knew Picasso’s middle name. I yelled out, “PINCHE!” The Spanish-speakers in my class laughed and my teacher nervously laughed. I said it again and again like “What?? It’s ‘Pinche!’” After saying it about four times too many, I realized that that was not not NOT his middle name. I don’t remember what it actually is, but I do remember that it sure as heck ain’t that. 🤦🏾♀️

Although, "pinche" is not a bad word itself. It has several different meanings, one of them being a sort of "sous-chef". But no one ever uses that word when talking about cuisine, it just somehow became a swearing word haha. Definitely a funny mistake, that one of yours.

The most embarrassing mistake I ever made in Spanish was during my first trip to Mexico. I was just starting to learn Spanish. Fish in a restaurant was "pescado" and other seafood "mari"-something, couldn't exactly remember the rest of the word. Then I remembered having heard the word "maricones" somewhere. I still remember the stunned faces when I said, "si, me gustan pescado y maricones". Now I will never forget that the correct word for seafood is "mariscos".
you helped me with "buscar por" because I am spoiled from english, eventhough it's not my native language. I have friend who wasn't able to remember "hasta luego!" and kept saying "hasta la fuego!" everywhere..

My MOST EMBARASSING mistake was when I met my friends mother for the first time. She is from Nicaragua. She didn't know any English. My friend was teaching me spanish using opposite words. For example, I learned words in "pairs" up/down good/bad. Big/small Young/old. So, upon meeting my friend's mother for the VERY FIRST TIME, I got my words mixed up and said she looked "old" instead of Young... I was EXTREMELY EMBARRASSED! She laughed but i was truly upset with myself.

I can't really say that I used to make these mistakes, but some of them were learned later rather than earlier (e.g., "mudar" vs. "mover", how "otro/-a" does not take an indefinite article, ...). Other lessons you taught in this were more of a good reinforcement than anything else (e.g., how you shouldn't use "para" after "buscar").
One mistake that I used to make frequently, however, was a mistake of pronunciation. When I first started learning Spanish, I could not roll my Rs. It took me weeks, if not months, before I was finally able to do it and then, when I had finally mastered it, I was rather euphoric about it and wanted to roll my Rs on everything -- words with a single R and those with a double RR all received a trill of the tongue. I would often do this, without thinking, until one day someone told me that "pero"" was not "perro." The correction was given to me in Spanish, but I knew immediately what she was trying to tell me and vowed to reign in my R rolling from that point forward. My Rs are probably still a bit strong to this day, but at least I'm more aware of how little deviations in pronunciation can turn a "but" into a "dog."
As a native spanish speaker, this is very useful for dialogue writing
I was in my early 20' when i went to a NY eve party with my PR freinds. we were laughing and drinking, people were speaking English and Spanish. For some reason I added to the cocversation in spanish. when i finished speaking this girl said' Hablas el español más malisimo que he escuchado.' everyone laughed. Happy New Year , not.

I told her I had sangria instead of sangre. Another is I told her my face gets red so easily, and every time I get embarrassed. But I used embarazada. The worst was when I asked someone if they wanted a tray. Bandeja.. but I said bendeja. Which sounds like something else lol

Okay, this person is from guatemala. She was just like, um excuse me? And I knew I said something wrong haha but we laughed about it. Yeah I work in a factory with spanish people from different countries. I noticed some countries see words as bad and some dont. I'm sure my vocabulary is a mixture of different countries lol
Spoken Spanish here in the United States has many transliterations. It is taking on a look of its own seeing how it has not been standardized here, yet. I think it is going through the same thing as English did. American English is different enough to be seen as a different language from British, both spoken and written forms. Just my thoughts on it.

I'm a substitute teacher. My most embarrassing mistake I made in Spanish was in school when I told a group of 7th graders that I liked tamales de galleta (cookies tamales) instead of tamales se gallina (chicken tamales). The roars of laughter were immediate and repeated every time they saw me for a couple of years.

I taught English reading to Spanish speaking students years ago and I wanted to say "Hola Carnal" to one of my students. I know that's slang, I had a very good relationship with him but instead I said "Hola Cabron" Ohhhhh my gawd I was mortified!!! I apologized everyday for like a month!!! Mind you these were KIDS guys!

Great vid. At 2:22 (pedir), this reminded me that people in the US order food in restaurantes using "ordenar", which can mean to sort, to arrange, or to command. Even the wait staff asks "¿Qué van a ordenar?". They should be using pedir. Reply with "Voy a pedir ...".
After a little too much tequila at our favorite restaurant I meant to say, "Me gustaría helado para llevar. Puedes ponerlo en una casa rodando?" (I meant to say, "caja redonda." The waitress looked at me like I had two heads, then she started to laugh uncontrollably! Fortunately, we were friends with her and her husband, so while it was embarrassing, it was mostly just hilarious. We were all laughing until we had tears in our eyes.

A few years back when my spanish class was on a trip to Cádiz in spain we lived with host families, me and a friend lived with this really nice mother and her sons and i wanted to say that something was warm and i thought the word for that was "infierno"... so i basically swore infrom of her children... she was really sweet about it though and i did learn "caliente" and "calor" very quickly after that...

I've heard Spanish is a fast spoken language (the second fastest after Japanese as you've mentioned in another video), but never really hear how fast it is until you speak it out! One time I was trying to say that my dog was scared, only instead of saying “Tiene miedo,” I accidentally said “Tiene mierda.” My friend’s Spanish speaking mother got a good chuckle out of that.

I just found this channel a couple of days ago. Me gusta mucho tu enfoque. (did Google translate do that correctly?) Your lessons are concise and focused, presented with good examples and are very entertaining. I am already finding that I understand what you say in Spanish as you speak clearly and not overly fast. At my stage of learning this is very helpful!
