  • @jamesregan6678

    I have recently decided to improve my understanding and use of Spanish.
    I started learning Spanish 21 years ago as an Immigration Inspector in Laredo, Texas.
    While I developed some proficiency, it was primarily useful for work related conversations.
    I learn all the questions needed but not all the possible answers.
    I always had fellow Inspectors who were native speakers of Spanish available to assist.
    After seven years I transferred to the northern border and began to lose much of what I had learned.
    Now retired, I have the time to develop a better understanding and ability with Spanish.
    It has only been two months since I began using TH-cam and other resources to increase my proficiency.
    I find your videos particularly helpful.
    Thank you for all you do for all of us.

  • @nicedog1
    @nicedog1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +176

    That was very useful thanks. I was only able to understand about ten percent of the conversation when listening to it. However, when I read the subtitles, I would say that I understood ninety percent. This is a problem I seem to have at the moment, whereby I can read Spanish fairly well but have trouble tracking it when it it spoken. No sooner have I worked something out when it has moved on, and on and on again. Do you have any advice for me?

    • @WhyNotSpanish
      @WhyNotSpanish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Your question is very interesting, and it deserves a more detailed answer than what I'll give you here, so I'm going to post a video answering it (I also find a lot of people in your situation). This will be on Friday, so be on the look for it. For now I'll tell you you should do 10 minutes a day at least of listening (not like music in the background, but actually paying attention and looking for words). Having a transcript or subtitles is helpful, so have those handy until you're able to be comfortable without them. Look for slow material or make the videos slower on TH-cam. (It gives you the option). Well... Like I said, it's a very interesting topic, and I'll have more suggestions on Friday! Gracias nicedog1! - Maria. 🙂

    1:15 to 1:22 is me just nodding and smiling not understanding a single sentence and at 1:25 is me asking for help to get me out in this conversation.

    At what speed are they talking at? I'm not at the point to listen to just voices but I was reading the subs and I surprised myself that I can understand what they're talking about.
    Were you guys speaking slower than usual?

    • @WhyNotSpanish
      @WhyNotSpanish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      +Monster With Eyes It's interesting, someone else asked a similar question so I watched the video again to see if we were speaking slower... I don't think so. What we are doing though is enunciating better. I also noticed we make pauses to think about what we will say next... Maybe that helped too? The topics we talk about are also basic ones like personal information questions and such... Still you should be proud of yourself that you understood it. Other videos in the future might be more challenging, so keep on practicing! 😊

    • @koldwolf
      @koldwolf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah I just read that persons comment too, what you say does make sense. I am pretty proud haha, I honestly surprised myself. I just found this channel through reddit so I've subbed for more :).
      By the way, do you have a video about the word "que" to me it seems like a magical word that only spanish speaking natives know how to use haha. I've only memorised certain phrases it's used in.
      muchas gracias :)

    • @WhyNotSpanish
      @WhyNotSpanish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      haha that's awesome! well, we made a video a while ago about expressions with "qué" th-cam.com/video/skdN_ZXtqh0/w-d-xo.html but I feel you might be looking for the uses of question, comparison, and exclamation that it has! like you said it's a lot of things in such a tiny word! I'll be working on that! ¡Gracias por vernos! 😀 If you want some free material like worksheets and such you could go to our website www.whynotspanish.com ¡Chao Monster With Eyes!

    estaban hablando mas despacio de lo normal para que nosotros podamos entender o no? podía entender bastante bien pero i wanna know if y'all are going easy on us at all. estoy acostombrada con la gente de mexico (vivo en tx) que habla muyyyyy rapidamente y casi nunca puedo entenderla :/
    y como siempre, muy buen video!!!

    • @WhyNotSpanish
      @WhyNotSpanish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Stephanie bueno, es interesante. Siento que estábamos hablando como de costumbre. Quizás fue fácil de entender porque las dos procuramos enunciar o articular lo que decíamos. Tampoco usamos jergas (slang), así que quizás eso ayude... ¡O quizás tú español sea mejor de lo que piensas! 😊

      I'm from Texas too. Many Mexicans here are from northern Mexico and they speak fast. Mexicans from other regions don't speak quite as fast. They speak fast in Medellín too, but not quite as fast as norteños from Mexico.

    I believe this is a nice way of learning Spanish, watching and listening native speakers having a regular everyday conversation , using the kind of language they really use in their everyday lives instead of what we are used to learn on traditional language schools and others courses...
    The real language is what we need, that's why you should keep it up with these series of videos!
    Nice job
