As a motion graphics template, this technique can also be used as more than just a timer, including counters, countdowns, count ups and loading progress bars.
If you find yourself using timers a lot, why not turn it into a MOGRT?

And if I wanted to make one of 10 minutes, how do I edit it?
@@Carlos.Prensa same boat
If you're making a timer longer than 4 minutes, you will need to set the font size smaller than 100 pixels. You can still scale your timer to any size using these steps here 5:27. To calculate the best font size, divide 27300 by your number of seconds (e.g. for a 10 minute timer, 27300/600 seconds = 45.5).
Coincidently I needed to create a 10 minutes countdown timer, thank you very much good sir.
THANK YOU!!!! I was getting so pist trying to do this on my 5 min timer haha! Bless you 😂
Thank you for this! Hands down the best and easy tutorial out there. I had to do one for almost 6 min countdown and it worked.
Just used this tutorial today, worked out SO WELL! Took me way too long to find a good tutorial on this subject, and this was spot on.Thank you
Thank you. This was straight forward. Clearly communicated, and FAR SUPERIOR to some of the "common" ways I've seen.
Really glad I stumbled upon your video! I'm not stuck with the timecode effect anymore. Thanks a lot, my dude!

AMAZING!!!
Thanks Michael!
Excellent, thank you for sharing this trick !
My pleasure!
Fun solution! Almost like building your own stopwatch out of spare parts. Also fun that you changed your mind on the pronunciation of 'posterize' half-way through. I think I'm with you on the later version.
Thanks! I only noticed that after I finished the video, and I've been kicking myself about it ever since :)
Thanks for making this video, I used posterize time and still getting a flick even after changing it to 1fps any idea
Thank you man!!
You're welcome Max!
Excellent tutorial. I did the 10 minute timer. It was a little confusing at first, but I got it! Thanks!
Thanks, glad it worked for you Tiffany!
How did you do it didn't work for my 15 min timer
THANKYOU SO MUCH YOU SAFE MY LIFE SIR
Amazing! at first I was like, nah its to much work but then I was really impressed wow
Thank you so much! Once you've created it, save it as a Motion Graphics Template and you'll never have to create it again.

For some reason when I make this timer, the text doesn't align during the middle of the countdown to the same point on the screen, The first and last numbers DO line up. I am trying to do a shorter timer but this also happens with my countdown from 1:00, I seem to be doing everything exactly as you do on the video, this must be a rare problem but do you have any ideas?
Awesome!
New sub
Obrigado pelo seu apoio Rafael!
Quick question, can I add background wallpaper or other texts (as a new layer) to the timer? It seems the size revert back to the original scaling whenever a new wallpaper or a new text layer is added even though I've disabled the posterize time effect. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for your time
You can add any layers you want, but just remember that any layer below the text will be masked by the rectangle. If you find Posterize Time is messing with your scaling, create a separate Graphics clip in your timeline and add your other layers to that.

What are some other animations you regularly need to create? Maybe I can help you come up with a quicker way!
How do you make an animated call out in which the distance being run gradually increases?
Is this helpful? th-cam.com/video/9IvHceA0qjs/w-d-xo.html
hey thanks for the video but i have a problem with one when i put the "posturize time" it still goes up like like there server of the timers but it just still moving up if u know what i mean
If your timer is moving it usually means either A) your sequence has a decimal frame rate or B) the gap between your keyframes does not match the number of times in your list.
hey man, i made tried making this in premiere pro 2019 and the timer gets slowly cut down out of the rectangle mask. any fix for this?
Check your frame rate and make sure it's not 23.976 or 29.97.
Hi! Such a nice explanation !
I have question when i turn on Posterize Time it's not moving at all
Thanks Mary! Try selecting your clip and choosing Sequence > Render Selection.
And if I wanted to make one of 10 minutes, how do I edit it?
Quite clever.
I want to see more timers in your videos now :)
@@ThePremierePro My bomb threats will look better than ever.
I assume this can work as a time of day counter, like a 24 hour clock? Haven't tried your example yet, but found this video while searching for a "time of day" counter.
Great video btw. Thanks.
Thanks! You absolutely can use it for that, or any long list of items that needs to iterate on screen at regular intervals.
Halp! I'm trying to do a 1 minute timer so there are 60 numbers. I want the duration of my clip to only be 3 seconds however. How do I calculate the frame rate for the Posterize Time effect?
This workflow here might be a better way to do that th-cam.com/video/ZROcJ4Bstxg/w-d-xo.html. Otherwise, the formula is Sequence Frame Rate divided by (Sequence Frame Rate multiplied by number of seconds). If your sequence is 30 frames per second, it would be 30 / (30 * 3) = 0.3333. Although Posterize Time only allows for one decimal place, so the timing probably won't be exact.
Great video !
And It would have been perfect if you added the steps to make it into a preset!! . so we won't have to go through all those steps every time.
great one thank you✅
To use it as a preset, you want to save it as a Motion Graphic Template.
Hi there!
So, as far as I know, I've followed all these instructions to the letter to make a 10 minute timer. I've even started with the 45.5 font size you've mentioned in the comments for that. But for some reason, my timer's animation is not toggled correctly in that it moves at random rates (i.e. lagging behind then speeding up). So at 8:21:06 in my playback, the animation timer is only hitting the 5:00 mark. At that point, however, the animation seems to move in hyper speed to still reach 0:00 at the same time as my playback. Wondering if you've seen this before or have any suggestions as to this behavior?
If you e-mail me your project file without media, I'll take a look at it (my email is in the About section).
@@ThePremierePro Thank you, but it looks like restarting my computer did the trick. Thank you also for this helpful video!
I'm having some issues with this! I set up a new sequence in 24fps, and the timer slowly moves down and gets cropped off. I've retried several times and the sequence is 100% in 24fps. Any ideas?
What is the start/end time of your timer and start/end timecode in your sequence?
G E N I O U S !!!
Thanks!
Very cool, can you also show how to create the animated cicle progress bar?
Great suggestion Jonas, I'll make another video and post it here.
I should also mention, the progress bar is included in the project file if you want to download it and see how I did there: bit.ly/TimerPrProj
When I add the Posterize Timer Effect, the timer just moves to 0:00 and doesnt move at all
Nice.......
Thanks Chris!
Very nice!!
Tell me - what does 'period period' do? I see that clicking '1..' takes it to 00:01:00:00, but is there a way to use the period for other timecode short cuts? My sequence starts at 01:00:00:00, so when I click '1..' it just jumps to the end of the sequence. Do you have a tutorial about using shortcuts to go to a specific timecode? Thanks!!
Thanks! Each period adds 2 zeros to your timecode. If your timecode starts at 01:00:00:00, just type +1.. to jump forward 1 minute.
I'm trying it for 5:00 but it's probably too long and I can't align to the bottom edge of the second layer :( Am I doing something wrong?
For long lists, just lower the font size (you can still scale it up to whatever size you want).
Wow! Amazing Video! I was wondering how I could change the length of the timer, instead of just 1 minute. For example, altering the beginning time to 1:30
Thanks - just set your first cell in Google Sheets to 1:30 and second to 1:29 - it will fill in the rest of the series for you.
@@ThePremierePro Cool! Thank you!
Amazing thanks. Can it be modified to do seconds?
Absolutely.
This was a great tutorial. The problem I am running into though is that my 6:30 countdown runs fine until it gets to 1:18. When it reaches 1:18 the countdown freezes in place and then shifts down about 100 pixels. Please advise, thanks.
Thanks Jared, I suggest checking your frame rate isn't a decimal (like 23.976), try rendering your timeline to see if it's a playback issue or try changing your Renderer (in File > Project Settings) to Software Only to see if it's a GPU issue. If the problem continues, shoot me a message and I'll take a look at your project file. bit.ly/PrProContact
@@ThePremierePro Will do. Thanks for the quick reply!
When it is possible to insert a "stamp" with a file name and a time stamp into a video in the AP, can the recording date be inserted in the same way (or similarly)? It's part of the metadata so maybe it should go but I can't find how to do it?
There's no built-in effect that can do this automatically, but you could batch rename your clips to match their creation date, and then use the Clip Name effect to display this.
@@ThePremierePro Thanks so much for the tip. It never occurred to me and it's so simple :) Thank you
An issue that pops up once in a while: When I've added the posterize time to the clip and changed the frame rate from 24 to 1 the second set of numbers sometimes makes a little jump downwards and then continue counting down from that lower position. I haven't been able to nail down why it doesn't happen all the time and what to do to fix it. :/ I'm using a 24 fps clip as my "base" because I can't create the first text layer if I don't have anything on the timeline before. Which may also be odd.
I've got the same problem, and no idea how to fix it
you are not following animation part in a correct way.

Hey, at first thanks for the interesting video and the good description. But sadly I encountered a problem. It does not work for me at the point, that i wanted to create a 10 minute countdown. But at 3:26 time stamp of your vid Premiere doesn't let me drag it further than -32768,0. Any idea why this does not work?
To get around Premiere's position limit of -32,768, just lower your font size to smaller than 100. (you'll still be able to scale up the text to any size you want)

Hi again. I'm going over your great video again. I'm looking forward to making some different timers! Do you have a video where you show how to use the timers in another video? Since this is still new to me, I'm not sure how I'll bring the timer into a new video as an overlay and where to place it. Mahalo for your time and help.
Hi Darryl, once you've created the timer, it's as easy as copy/pasting into a new sequence or project to use again.
@@ThePremierePro would I save it as a project file or mp4?
@@HealthFitnessMartialArtsDEng Only save as an MP4 if you exporting a finished video.
@@ThePremierePro Mahalo!
Hiya, I'm trying to make a timer that's 4min 54sec long. I can't drag the position of the list layer further up than -32768. Is there perhaps some limit to the length of the timer?
For long lists, I recommend lowering the font size - that will allow you to animate position within the 32,768 px limit.
@@ThePremierePro Thank you for the reply. So there's an actual limit to the possible length, hmmm. Would learning to create a timer in AE be a better choice, in your view?
@@marcuslinder661 That's a hard question to answer without knowing more about your project and skill level. AE is a superior application when it comes to design and animation, but it's also a steep learning curve for some. If you change your font size to something smaller than Premiere's default (100 px), you can create a timer that's well over an hour long, and you can still make it as big or small as you want.
@@ThePremierePro Thanks, yet again, for the reply. I'm trying to get into both Pr and Ae but am still a bit confused about which application to use for what task since it seems I can get by using Pr for my specific needs (interval timers to use with music clips) and not have to touch Ae at all. But there's sooo many nice effects to be had if I get into Ae proper. ;)
I seem to be having an issue with the posterization. When I toggle the effect off, the counter lines up with the position it should be lining up with every second (00:00:00:00, 00:00:01:00, 00:00:02:00, etc.) as it should, but when I toggle the Posterize Time effect on, it seems like it's taking the snapshot of where the counter is positioned at every frame 14 instead of every frame 0 (00:00:00:00, 00:00:00:14, 00:00:01:14, 00:00:02:14, etc.).
Sequence timebase is set to 30 fps, posterize time frame rate is set to 1. My timer is 3:30 (3 minutes, 30 seconds) long and even in the middle of that sequence there doesn't seem to be any drift like I would expect if the division weren't quite even. It's more like it's behaving as though there's a half second offset in there, and from there continues posterizing once a second evenly but it looks like an elevator stuck directly in the middle between floors.
Anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?
Sometimes this can be caused by a caching issue with the Posterize effect. A couple of things to try: delete your previews and restart Premiere, or export your timeline to confirm it's not just a playback issue.
Thanks for this video but I wish you helped us achieve the circle around the timer you displayed in the beginning, so I don't have to use ae or presets
If you download the project file, it's included in that.
@@ThePremiereProOh, great! So kind of you. Much from Africa!!!
Done. Thanks a million@@ThePremierePro
Is there some way to create a timer that acts like a stopwatch including tenths of seconds or milliseconds? I created a list of times that are in increments of tenths of seconds, but the timer won't stay in one spot once it starts playing on the video. It starts to roll up in its box like credits or something. Idk how to describe it.
Hi Andrew, technically this is possible - although it will require a very long list of times, especially for milliseconds. If your timer is moving up or down screen, that's usually an indication that either the sequence has a frame rate with a decimal or the time between keyframes does not match the timer duration.
for some reason my rectangle moves with the time? There arent any key frames making this happen but I can't figure out how to stop it?
In the Effect Controls panel, check and make sure you added the keyframes to the text layer and not the Vector Motion.
After the bottom-up step, I cant see the list, just the start time. It's like the 2nd list is invisible. The eye is toggled on. Thanks for your help.
Make sure your Program Monitor is set to Fit (no zoom) and that there aren't blank lines in your time list.
I'm having issues when I try to bring this into my sequences that are 23.97 fps. Do you have any tips for this?
What issues are you experiencing Amanda?
How do I change the duration and colour?
To change the duration, create a different list of times in Google Sheets. You can easily change the color by selecting the timer layer in the Essential Graphics panel and clicking the Fill color picker at the bottom. If you need to regularly change times, this workflow might be easier: th-cam.com/video/ZROcJ4Bstxg/w-d-xo.html
