One more element that could add even more is a 'breath' track. Hearing the protagonist breathing, you can tell a story there too. Him getting increasingly stressed, sighing, shortness of breath/quicker breathing, etc.

Absolutely love that idea - it could serve as a great audio motif and tension escalator.

something that Roger Waters used to good effect on a good number of tracks throughout his career

I think in the past I was too naïve to think editing is just the visual, but after seriously trying editing out, I realized the amount of time that sound design takes is crazy !

Probably the best sound design video on TH-cam, simple and to the point. Really helped me improve and deliver the results I was after, honestly just using this video as 'feedback' will improve 99% of people watching this video. And what I mean by feedback, is watch your last video back and see if it ticks all or any of the boxes this dude mentions. If you tick them all then you shouldn't be watching this video :)

🌟 Here is a summary. Thank me later, you got this!
🎨 Steps to Awesome Sound Design:
    1. Score:
    • Importance: Even if a composer will score later, adding temp music helps design sound effects in context and communicate the vision.
    • Technique: Cut and rearrange music cues to match the visual edit. Use non-rhythmic orchestral music for easier editing.
    2. Ambience and Foley:
    • Ambience: Every location needs ambient sound (e.g., air conditioner hum in an office, wind for outdoor shots).
    • Foley: Ensure every visible action has a corresponding sound (e.g., typing, pen strokes, footsteps).
    • Diversity: Avoid repetitive sounds by using varied sound clips and cutting longer clips into individual sounds.
    3. Creative Sound Design:
    • Abstract Sounds: Use sound to communicate emotions, thoughts, and actions not visible on screen.
    • Non-literal Sounds: Add sounds for camera moves, transitions, and non-visible actions to enhance storytelling.
    • Experimentation: Use stock libraries and record custom sounds to fill specific needs.
    🛠 Practical Examples:
    • Initial Pass Critique:
    • Issues: Misaligned score, lack of ambience, repetitive sound effects, lack of reverberation, and missed creative opportunities.
    • Solutions: Address each issue with targeted fixes in the refined version.
    • Refined Version:
    • Score: Adjust cues to match visual actions, such as a staple being pulled, and use simpler, ominous drones for background tension.
    • Ambience: Add relevant ambient sounds and adjust volumes to fit the scene.
    • Varied Sound Effects: Use clips with multiple keystrokes or pen sounds, cutting and aligning them with the visuals.
    • Reverb: Apply environmental reverb to Foley tracks to match the character’s environment.
    • Creative Enhancements:
    • Opening Credits: Add chimes and a drone to set the tone.
    • De-stapling Moment: Add reverse impacts to make it sinister.
    • Character Movements: Use whooshes for quick movements to reinforce the comedic nature.
    • Hits and Impact Sounds: Add hits to emphasize actions like placing a box on a desk.
    🎧 Advanced Techniques:
    • Layering Sounds: Combine multiple sounds to create richer audio.
    • Consistent Style: Maintain a consistent sound style throughout the piece.
    • Identifying Key Moments: Recognize moments that need sound accenting and treat them appropriately.
    • Balancing Intensity: Not every moment needs maximum intensity; balance subtle and intense sounds for impact.
    📝 Mixing and Final Touches:
    • Mixing Levels: Ensure dialogue, sound effects, and score are at appropriate levels (e.g., dialogue around -12 dB, sound effects -10 to -30 dB, score -22 to -30 dB).
    • Iterative Process: Sound design is iterative; refine and adjust in multiple passes for the best results.
    🎬 Conclusion:
    • Foundations: Start with score, ambience, and Foley.
    • Creativity: Add layers and think outside the box for a sophisticated and interesting soundscape.
    • Consistency: Apply techniques consistently across different software platforms.

So I’m filming (new TH-camr) cooking videos and I absolutely love videos with the natural sounds and foley! Do you recommend I film the sounds with a mic while I am filming me cooking it or film the audio separate just focusing on the sounds and do foley. I’m not a professional obviously and wanted to ask you because you have worked as a sound designer. I use CapCut free for now and haven’t looked too much into what stock sound effects they have. Any tips would be super appreciated!

    • @iocomposer
      @iocomposer หลายเดือนก่อน

@@HealthierDayByTay Hard to tell what you're asking for but if it's a mic recommendation, the Sennheiser MKH50 is a popular one for TH-camrs. If you're looking for a library of sound effects, I hear that Soundly is a great way to go... it's a reasonably priced subscription service with a large library and great search interface. I have my own libary that I've been developing for 30 years but there's easier and faster ways to get there now. Good luck!

You'll be hard-pressed to find anything better than that. Secrets of Creative Editing is what IMO should precede Art of Drama Editing in terms of sequence because it acts as a base, the fundamentals. And then Drama Editing and other courses like Music Editing go in greater depth on each of those aspects of film editing.
