Ys X: Nordics Review - The Final Verdict

- For many years, the Ys series has been an exceptional action RPG franchise. It arguably reached new highs with Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys 9: Monstrum Nox, yet there was still hype for Ys 10: Nordics. Having shifted to Falcom's new engine and promising a larger scale, it seemed poised to elevate the series even higher.
The truth is a little more complicated. Set earlier in Adol's life, Ys 10: Nordics sees him teaming with Karja Balta to battle the Griegr. All the while, he must unravel the mystery of their plans and the Normans' history. Alongside sailing and ship combat, it also features a new combat system focused on parrying and dual attacks.
It's a lot, and while some mechanics can be enjoyable, I have my share of nitpicks. Don't get me wrong - Ys 10: Nordics is enjoyable, but longtime fans should know what they're getting into.
This games biggest mistake is releasing some time as metaphor
I find it’s better 🤷♂️
Incorrect.
Still wouldn't do that much better if it released some other time i think. It's niche
0:38 Memories of Celceta is actually the 4th game. Ys 10 is the 3rd game timeline wise, but the actual “Ys 3” is called Oath in Felghana.
Timeline wise MOC would be 5th and Ys 10 would be 4th. unless your excluding Ys Origin since it doesn't have Aldo in it
Yeah, I was going off of the games that feature Adol lol
@OrichalkosTV I mean if you consider zero entries (Ys Origin is Ys 0, afterall) a part of the numbering, then yeah.
Ys 8 is still the best in the series.
The way the demo ends is fucked up. How you gonna blue ball me like that lmao
Been playing the demo and it's great. I am playing on the second hardest mode and it is pretty damn difficult as well so be prepared if you plan to go that route as you need to be precise with a lot of movement, duo and especially blocking skills with an emphasis on watching your own stagger meter. There is a lot to learn and perfect in this game which differs greatly from previous Ys titles. Bottom line, every Falcom game is good so you really cannot go wrong with this. It's really fun. Kind of a mix between Zelda, previous Ys titles, AC Blackflag and Cold Steel.
This Ys title is much more mystical than previous titles. Probably even more so than Dana in terms of mythology and such. I find that type of lore and stuff awesome so if you like Norse mythos and are a real world history buff, you will seriously like this. Also, the map is massive so there will be a TON of exploration. Also if you thought Laxia had a power ass, you have seen nothing yet. Karja wrote the book on it.
This demo made me realize that there is a whole francise. Gonna get 8 when it gets on sale and gonna get 10 probably when released (if it gets a regional price)
I only played the demo so far but 7 seems a little bit low. After the demo, I regretted buying Metaphor...
Why
Good thing with this game. Is there is actually more gameplay than cutscenes.
Hey, get this you can play more than one game
Metaphor too Persona looking for me, don't care for that particular anime style. Plus, it's turn base. YS anime aesthetic is more appealing to me. It aligned more with the Tales and its action combat. But respect those who love those type of games.
@@gothjoeevil Videogames are expensive.
Im surprisingly enjoying this games narrative and overall core gameplay even more than trails through daybreak
Looks decent, but Metaphor has my full attention for the foreseeable future
Agreed. Feel bad they released it at a terrible time. I loved Ys 8, but 9 was a bland disappointment.
Mine was the opposite, as soon as i saw the demo for this i halted my Metaphor Playthrough and instantly started up the Ys X Nprdic demo lol. Either way rpg fans are eating good this month
Nah metaphor will get a golden edition so it’s a waste of time buying the vanilla version rather get this
I can't even get to metaphor yet, this fall is packed...
@@treebush I think they said they will opt for paid dlc and no more re-releases, but who knows
In defense of the combat, its still the first iteration of it. Comparing it to the 3rd and 4th iteration of the party combat from ys 8/9 is always gonna leave you wanting. Like Compare it to Ys 7s combat (the first iteration of party combat, where you couldnt jump/flash move, and flash guarding wasnt even explained in the game) and see if it's better or not.
These guys should really have moved the game back because Metaphor will CRUSH their sales
Shame this is releasing the same time as big daddy Metaphor Refantazio.
Not for me! (A switch player)
I'm definitely going to pick this up. I just finished silent hill 2 remake and I tried to play trails through daybreak but there's just sooooooooo much dialogue... I love the combat system but I just cant all the constant talking, I dont want to walk around talking to people for 2 hours.. but I've liked ys since ys 8, there's still alot of dialogue but it's maybe a quarter as much as trails or persona.. I really wish there was a game with trails through daybreak combat but with a quarter of the dialogue
How was the Silent Hill 2 remake??
@scottfrenz fucking amazing. I played most of the big releases this year and I'd give silent hill 2 remake game of the year.. the only other game this year on its level is space marine 2. But seriously, it's amazing
I love the YS series but I won’t be playing this game anytime soon. Too much competition for my time and money.
Why do they keep their eyes closed for so long when blinking?
Sarcasm
I prefer jrpgs that have more party members so this game might not be for me. I also have some history with action jrpgs which I find to be spammy and shallow in depth. Metaphor: Refantazio has my full attention for now.
Celceta was actually 4, oath in felghana is next
Great review of Ys X Nordics. Looks fun though sad to hear its not quite as good as the Lacrimosa of Dana.
Still excited to play it next week.
Not sure how to find time for this between metaphor and romancing saga
I never do lol at least not all at once. One game usually pulls me in the most, and then I get to the rest when I get to them
Love falcom games and ys 8 is one of my favourite game ever. I m playing the demo of ys Nordic and seems good but i prefer the party, flash guard and flash moves (combat system is really good anyway) .... And there are too much dialogues for an action rpg. I don't care graphic if gameplay is good but this game have too simple models on background and enemies ... I expected something more to be honest. It s not much better than ys 8 or 9...i ll wait sale to buy it.
Watched a few previews & reviews hoping to see something that will interest me but the game is looking so bland, I'll pick it up anyway. Cat Quest 3 ship battles seem like they're more fun.
I haven't beat a single ys game. It looks OK though
Play ys 8,is the best in the series...
I remember when I did beat the final boss of Ys I yeeaars ago, in the middle of the night, almost getting my ass whooped because I woke everyone up cause of a scream xD
Graphics still ps3 gen
It's a Switch lead development and switch is on par with the ps3, so...
And that's ok
Considering all the games coming out this year, this has to be the most underwhelming. It’s a game that came out years ago but now releasing in the US, no upgraded graphics or features, just a US release. That’s all. If I’m diving into a JRPG, I want it to be immersive and new. This looks like Ys VIII, which was great. If you’re going to play any Ys game for the first time. Play Ys Viii, that game was great and still is. Ys X looks like they’re trying to chase the success of YS VIII. I played the YS X demo and yes, any Ys fan will agree. Play Ys VIII instead of X
probably the stupidest take ever, underwhelming because it come out last year in Japan and localized without extra stuff? What logic is that? That is normal in most localization. Not all games got simultaneous release and being localized later doesnt suddenly make it underwhelming and "old" game. Especially since this is till the newest YS game even in Japan. And unless you actually play the original Japan release this take is really stupid.
Thanks for the review! It looks to me boring as hell. The characters are as always as generic as possible. The gameplay looks uninteresting and so does the exploration. I finished Ys 8 and it was ok even if so-so. I just finished Yakuza: infinite health (what a game!) and Metpahor Refantazio is out. No way I can play Ys 10. I would even instead replay Phantasy star 1 from the 1980's, more appealing to me than this.
Im not sure i like how their ripping off european culture. Seems hypocritical with Japanese response to Assassins Creed. But I love the voice acting and character design
Oh please…
Get outta here with that woke crap it's a video game. The whole premise of the story is that it's a mirror world of ours.
Lol
Brother the AC situation is a lot more complicated and this game is a fantasy anime game it's completely different
@@ryanbaker5296 Both fiction
Graphics still trash af
Yet Fortnite still standing
Ah yes because that’s what makes games great is the graphics. Unreal 5 has only had buggy releases this whole year.
It was developed as a Switch title first. YS games have always had meh graphics too but the visuals have never been the point. Skip it if you don't like it.
I guess you only play games for the graphics
This comment is why Western game development is in the mess it's in. Constantly trying to push graphics.
Ys 3 is Ys Oath in Felghana, not Ys Memories of Celceta.
