    Don’t forget tension! Tension management is the single biggest mistake newcomers make imo. If your teammates have low tension, their attacks will miss, effectively rendering them useless. If your teammates have low tension, walk up to them and press b. Similarly, if you have low tension get close to a teammate so they can encourage you.

    • @redlfclegend24

      Kello Kabana where can you see, that one of your teammates is under extreme tension?

    • @kellokabana2399
      @kellokabana2399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If a character has low tension, their avatars facial expressions will look sleepy with their eyes closed. If they have high tension, their avatars will be on fire. Whenever you look at your health bar make sure to notice if the characters have their eyes closed. That means their tension is low. Walk up to them and press b.

      @xakuray5522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@redlfclegend24 by their health bar, you can see the character's face, if their look grim, they have low tension and are demotivated. What you want is them to be all fired up, that's when they reach the max tension level

    • @werdna1969
      @werdna1969 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Funny thing is, the word “tension” is misused in Japanese. When a Japanese person says “my tension is increasing” or “I’m under high tension”, they actually mean “I’m getting pumped up”.
      It’s odd that this misnomer made it into English translation without being corrected.

    • @xakuray5522
      @xakuray5522 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, it's not the best but I don't really see any better alternatives, pressure excitement or concern are even worse at conveying the idea. I guess energy or motivation would be decent alternatives but tension is fine too, we do say "a tense battle" afterall.

    One of the things about Shadow Eye is that it can allow Shulk to use a few arts in a row if it's thrown in the middle of an art chain. A good idea is to move to the side > Slit Edge > Air Slash > move to the back > Shadow Eye > Back Slash.

    • @StartouchArts
      @StartouchArts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      There's another very important aspect about Aggro that Mickey forgot about: Healing Arts also generate Aggro. A LOT of it.
      Because of this, a Shulk/Reyn/Sharla team is actually really bad. Because Reyn is constantly taking damage, his Aggro Arts have a very hard time keeping up, while Shulk dishes out stupid amounts of damage, and Sharla's gigantic heals also try to steal Reyn's Aggro.
      So instead of the team combo being: Reyn takes all the damage, Sharla healing him up, while Shulk goes to town for free, it's actually: Everyone is splitting Aggro everywhere and the party dies.

    • @Th1boi
      @Th1boi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tobi of the Akatsuki That’s the tactical thing from the combat That makes it much more fun to be Honest. You constantly try to keep the agro low on sharla and shulk and you can use arts to do this. Even it Does not work all the time you Need to think wisely to use Offensive arts because that attracs Aggro to. It’s only irritating if the AI is stupid.

I really wish I played this game earlier but also glad I waited.

    • @MiaTyrnfae
      @MiaTyrnfae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In addition, taking damage will lower your aggro. That's part of why Dunban can keep aggro so much more easily than Reyn, he doesn't lose it because he doesn't get hit.

    I thought the combat was quite intuitive and easy to pick up. Like you said in your last video, the tutorials are great. So the real issue is...PEOPLE DON'T READ TUTORIALS. I mean I'm guilty of it to in some games, but in RPGs with different mechanics than you're used to, you absolutely should.

    Just started playing this game last Saturday and boy is this harsh! The first 5 hours are brutal. I'm getting killed and killed time and again. Though your video is helpful, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong, because Shulk doesn't seem to aggro that much (probably more than it should, but it feels overall not that bad), but Reyn gets killed from all the hits he takes, and I don't see any way around it. I use my healing as soon as possible. I got wrecked against the spider, dying like 8 times.
    I decided to do all the side quests before my next stream so I would level up, hoping this will make things a bit easier. I'll see how it goes. I'd have to go read how to fill the combo bar, because between each stream, I tend to forget some mechanics, and I tend to not use my combo too much, because I feel like I need the bar for revive and warnings. (Is it mandatory to alert Reyn of special attacks or can I just shield it? I feel like only the shield doesn't work, because maybe it's just because it's not 100%?).

      Try to take into consideration that teams should have the stock fundamentals: A Tank, a Damage Dealer, and a Healer. Meaning that there are a few people that fit each role. For instance, Riki can act as a decent damage dealer, AND a decent healer. It's really all about how you strategize in this game. My main issue is that I can't find a good way to ensure party members have the right arts to use in the right order when I do a chain attack. If I play as Reyn as my main character, how do I break since his arts topple the enemy? Also, since some arts needs to be performed on a specific position relative to the enemy to maximize damage, how can they be used correctly in a chain attach? Outside of chain attacks, I have to quickly move from art to art in order to topple a monster since I only have a fraction of a second to launch the right art. And when the monster has fallen, he gets back too quckly to really have the time to deal damage.
    I can't get that combat system so in the end, I gave up the chain attacks and break / topple combos to just spam arts and hope my level is enough to kill the monster. This is a mess and I feel really frustrated.

    • @JRPG-Mickey
      @JRPG-Mickey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A lot to answer, I'll try my best. You're right, not all characters are going to have the exact art you'll want. Shulk specializing in Break arts, Dunban and Reyn having Topple Arts, and Reyn/Shulk having Daze Arts. Although some arts are performed in a specific position to maximize damage (like Backslash), the point is that unless you're controlling that character, you won't be able to position them. Try to focus on building the chain MULTIPLIER, rather than getting the bonus damage from the position. Remember, like I stated in the video, by using multiple topple skills (and daze skills for that matter) when an enemy is toppled, it will EXTEND the time that the topple occurs. I would HIGHLY urge you to not give up on chain attacks/break topple combos...and also highly urge that you go AGAINST spamming arts (with at least Shulk and Melia). Just remember, the combat system is more NUANCED. It's not about spamming arts, it's about using them correctly.

    dunban just a hands down better tank?
    upsides to reyns damage soak vs "magic" attacks? or can dunban dodge ranged/magic attacks the same as physical dmg?

    I just don't get this combat. It seems passive but you can move around during it. I don't see the advantage of moving.

    Do you recommend controlling a character who is not in charge of starting the break-topple-daze combo? I ask this because I'm at the part where I just got the monado, and in battle when I break the enemy I have to wait for Reyn to do his thing but sometimes he doesn't because he just used that skill and it's not ready or is in the middle of a long animation that lasts longer than break is active. I'm guessing advancing more will give more options but trying to do this in the early stages is very inconsistent, unless I'm missing something... Great video again, thanks!

      Very good question. Unfortunately every single thing you said is correct. Personally because I've played this game a couple times, I like to use Reyn during those battles because I like to control the topple art timing, rather than relying on the AI. That being said, things WILL get easier. Don't be discouraged. Lastly, feel free to try out other characters! Don't just rely totally on Shulk (when mechon isn't around at least). You'll learn a ton about the mechanics of the game by playing other characters!

    Is it not recommended to have shulk as the leader(controllable character) ? Cos i dont know if the ai will use important monado abilities like enchant or shield when needed.

    • @airibun35
      @airibun35 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He does use monado arts well enough, though he’s a bit slow on enchant and has a tendency to use buster as soon as possible

    • @JRPG-Mickey
      @JRPG-Mickey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i would hightly recommend using all characters to some degree. it'll teach you more about the game's mechanics. The AI will indeed use Monado arts, however it's not optimized. That said, use Shulk when you fight Mechon, and dabble in other characters when you feel more comfortable.

      The game explains it to you. You can use specific monado arts to easily deal with them, but they're not necessarily the only way to deal with visions.

      @OniiChanPls 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rhael42 yeah i was asking for more of the ways to deal with it without arts. Like even if I warn a teammate, it doesn't guarantee that the future will be changed depending on the arts I choose.

    • @JRPG-Mickey
      @JRPG-Mickey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you Chain attack and do BREAK > TOPPLE > DAZE the vision will go away. Secondly, you can warn someone like Sharla to heal or do a Damage Immunity art. OR you can warn Reyn and use his Gurad Shift to block an attack.
