- Thought this might be kinda useful as a video to give a better understanding of what makes a good party and what party setups typically work the best. Hopefully it's way better than my xenoblade 2 video on the same subject LOL.

Ah, the tried and true trinity of DPS, Tank, and healer. Really you can't find a better team.
If I had a dollar for every time AI Shulk used Enchant when everyone had anti-Mechon weapons equipped, I could buy the Xenoblade Definitive Works Set

well I heard that anti-Mechon weapons will only do normal damage halved normally without enchant but I agree with you that AI Shulk is stupid. Examples are: Buster, shield, cyclone, Enchant,purge, (i heard other say that eater or speed was used at different times but I have never seen it) at the wrong time (armor is mostly useful even if it is unnecessary unless used on a weak enemy)

Yeah, the tombstone system was a good idea, although I don't think it's TOO bad having to reload to get them to respawn. I'd say the advanced art books are a much more annoying part about unique monsters, since they all have such pitiful drop rates.
Jordan3D well one of the nice things about definitive edition which is spoilers kind of but after you beat future connected you can buy level 12 art books with nopon stones in the challenge battle area which completely surpasses the level 10 art books saving the need to grind for them and allowing u to pick the exact art u want upgrades for as well as it being able to reach level 12

In a relatively normal playthrough I can't hit the high level enemies and without heal get practically one shot.
Don't need others to heal when you heal yourself by stabbing the enemy really really hard.

Nah, using Sharla is not a mistake, but not trying more party comp may have been one. In the end, it worked, that's what important!
I'm on my second playthrough, about to finish the events at Eryth Sea, and I've already maxed out Sharla's affinity with everyone else, so that I don't need to use her ever again till Seven joins the party

I know crapping on Sharla is a meme, but her dps outside of chain attacks can't be denied now, what with Headshot spamming with Drive Boost at level XII. The fact that she's probably the worst chain attack character outright definitely doesn't make her great in most teams, but once you max out her two good arts she becomes somewhat solid for the (very few) situations where her niche can be utilized effectively.
Dickson is miles better than Sharla. After all, Thunder Bolt hits only one time which is miles better as we all know. We also know that a healer that can only auto-attack at short range is just complimentary to their playstyle.
Sharla actually isn’t too bad until around Egil Is dead. She heals decently good and if you pull a Shulk/Fiora and Reyn/Dunban and Sharla, it would not be that bad

It would have been really neat if Glorious Future had the opposite effect on Sharla and actually emptied her talent gauge every time it proced.

I’ve had the game since the 3DS version and when I saw the Definitive Edition was being released I was hyped. Before I ramble on I do want to say that your guides are pretty amazing, i’m dying less often in battles, survivability and chain attacking are more consistent. Keep up the great work!
Would be cool to revisit XC2 party compositions at a later date, dissecting which blades are best on which drivers, who has the best animations on each weapon, etc.

Great video! Gives a fair shake to everyone and basically covers everything about 'good' parties. Melia is great and fun to play, but yeah, the physical team synergy is just too strong and comes out ahead as a whole.
Melia fiora Dunban is also a pretty cool combo. Lets you topple lock, spam chain attacks and has great synergies. Topple guarantees a crit for ether attacks after all.

I'm in same boat, got Dunban, switched sharla for him, immediately started dying to everything. I actually enjoy controlling Sharla, but I am often a healer in games, so it just jives with me.
I’m fine without her in most cases, but against unique mobs and the like she’s a nice safety net. Her lack of chain versatility is really starting to show, however. Can’t wait for Head Shot.
Use Riki. He’s a straight upgrade.
hiddenmonkeyofdoom the tricks either using shulk intelligently or using Riki. The best alternative is outputting so much damage they don’t focus the softer guys in the group. Reyn and Riki are pretty great characters to play if if you struggle with surviving.

Nesouk Kefka honestly she’d still suck. Her supports unnecessary when you can just run Riki for healing and most of her other abilities are negated by gems. And having only 4 attack arts that are all different colors means that without melia she’s a fuckin bitch to chain attack with.

I wish there was a gem that instead of deheating Sharla's gun, it gave an aoe healing effect based on a percentage of the damage Sharla deals. That would make her a much better support, make spamming arts like Headshot much more viable, and keep her alive during the cool down.

The party setups I like the most are the ether party with Melia/Riki/Sharla. Or some experimental setups like Riki/Reyn/Dunban for chain building/topple-locking or Tank Sharla focused teams.
Yeah, another Sharla-tank lover! It's the great thing with that battle system, any team can work well enough since the game is not that hard to begin with.

To be honest, I just used whoever was the lowest level party member, or whoever had the most story relevance. Made both Gadolt fights a lot harder than the needed to be. This will be nice for time attack though, which I've been saving for NG+.
Also, about the AI, imagine how sick it would be if this game had online co-op for up to 3 people. The game would be a lot easier, but it be even more fun than it already is.

Sharla's only good party is a Melia-Riki-Sharla full ether party which actually works well for tackling red enemies. It needs setup like Tank Riki, linking Melia's Enlightenment to everyone for ether accuracy, and bringing sleep skills for emergencies. But Sharla's overkill healing actually works well in those situations. I beat the pterodactyl at the top of the Fallen Arm and Riki's skill tree quest boss on the waterfall island with this underleveled party.
In all other situations Sharla just drags your team down.
I really love that trio and thought I was the only one lol.

Poor Sharla man... if only they gave her SOMETHING in this version if the game, ideally a talent art rework, but no. She's the Nia of Xenoblade 1; she gives you insane survivability if your party is not built properly, but that's it (and let's be honest here: if you're using Sharla, that automatically means that you're team is not built properly).
Heck, at least Nia has great utility with a million break arts (especially with Obrona in NG+ for that juicy double hit crit recharge break art), or can be spec'd to be a strong damage dealer with someone like KOS-MOS or Crossette. Sharla just has healing, and that's it.
Gotta disagree, you can build a team with Sharla, every team can work, because the game isn't that hard that it invalidates any team composition. Some just break the game (in a good way), as presented in the video. Optimal? Nope. Viable? Sure.
myhr2 yeah but unlike other Xeno games she’s a crutch, not a person or value. Compare this to characters like Citan who can and will kick the shit out of a dragon with ease and is a good doc sharla is just meh damage in a game you don’t need healer.

@@myhr2320 Don't get me wrong, Sharla can work in most team comps, has gotten me out of some really sticky situations, and adds tons of sustain in a game that otherwise lacks healing (a pitiful single target heal from Shulk and a decently strong heal from Riki are the only other direct heals in the game). Her biggest issue is that the healing is almost everything she brings to the table. I will admit that she also offers pretty good utility through her shield/cure/heat bullets, but the support isn't enough to compensate for her low damage. Sure, she can keep your team alive much longer than if you weren't running her, but longer fights also lead to more opportunities to mess up or for things to really go south for the team. She also comes with the issues of the team crumbling the second the tank goes down due to how little she contributes to party gauge gain for revives.
If they reworked Cool Off to where she wasn't forced to do so at full heat, then player controlled Sharla would actually have some very high DPS through Drive Boost spamming (as Enel showed off in her character guide), particularly since she does 56% more damage at max heat.
Unfortunately, they did almost nothing to buff her in the remaster, so she's the only one if the 7 characters to not really fill a niche in the late or end game; Shulk, Reyn, Dunban, Melia and Fiora have massive damage outputs. Shulk, Reyn, Dunban and Fiora can topple lock an enemy and build chain attacks like they're nothing. Reyn, Dunban and Fiora make great endgame tanks. If you need a support character that badly, Riki offers a strong heal while also having tons of debuffs and DoTs so he can still contribute to the team offensively.
Sharla's problem isnt that she's not viable. Her problem is that she really only offers healing, which many players use as a crutch and may end up hurting the team's chance of success as a whole (try fighting something like Abaasy with Sharla rather than topple locking it or just quick killing it and you'll see what I mean). She's a healer, nothing more. And that just makes her too niche for her own good when you start to properly optimize your team.
@@anthonyk3952 Oh, I agree, but I was specifically refering to you saying that a team with Sharla is not "built properly". Maybe you were just using a little hyperbole for the argument's sake, and no-one can deny that she most likely makes thing harder for the team when you know what are the better options, mechanic-wise, but still, I think it's good to point out that the game has a great diversity in terms of strategy.
Also, you forgot Melia's Healing Gift as the last direct heal in the game, and yes, I've tried Healer Melia, at which point it should be obvious that I like to suffer to try make sub-optimal things work, but I think it's just to the game's credit that even sub-optimal strategies can work with enough tweaks.

I’m definitely going with Shulk,Fiora and Dunban as my go to party. It seems really solid and better than the ether party. Probably will have Shulk and Fiora occasionally swap role as party leader and Dunban and Reyn swap role as the third party member. Thanks for the help!

I'm super casual compared to the strats in this game, but I really appreciate this video. I'll probably be coming back many times for reference in the future if I decide to go for these end game bosses, or if I just get stuck in the story.
This video is primarily about the end game, but I must say that when you fight through the Mechonis, I absolutely love playing as Dunban with Fiora as the second party member. With them, you can engage a huge group of Mechon, whittle one enemy's HP down to almost 0, start a chain attack, finish that one off with Demon Slayer which topples all the other enemies, and then use Mag Storm with Fiora to daze everyone. It's so satisfying, and you can often start another chain attack immediately afterward and keep everyone Daze-locked.

I wish Dickson was playable throughout Satorl Marsh. Make him like the Vandham of Xenoblade 1.
My favorite is Melia, Dunban, and Fiora in that order.
I love Melia's DoTs and her ability to topple by herself. If I get Fiora to max tension and have a chain attack ready, I use Spear Break, start the chain attack, them use Starlight Kick and then the other two topple arts. Then with the 4x Chain, I poison the enemy and then allow Dunban and Fiora to go ham with their red arts.
Since toppled enemies have no evasion or ether resist, Final Cross in a chain attack is wonderful for the guaranteed criticals, heals, and topple duration.
While we're talking about parties, I found one team in particular that worked amazingly well for me personally around mid-late (around level 60-80) game when dealing with enemies many levels above me.
Melia, Dunban, and Sharla (yes, Sharla).
Throughout my game, I didn't acquire many decent agility up gems and therefore struggled with my physical party when dealing with higher level enemies. I found this team to be incredibly helpful. I set them up by giving Dunban the few agility gems I had, giving Melia her standard chill, poison, and ether up gems, and making Sharla tanky by giving her my very best HP up and muscle up gems.
The strategy is fairly simple. The aggro stays on Dunban and sometimes Sharla while Melia uses Summon Ice & Earth to deal all the damage. Sharla keeps herself and Dunban alive, and Meila finishes off the enemy with Summon Bolt(s). I chose to use Dunban as the tank rather than Reyn for a couple reasons. Dunban's higher agility would give him at least a slight chance of hitting the opponent, and his serene heart & battle eye auras help his accuracy and help keep Meila safe respectively.
I'm no expert--in fact, I'm relatively new to these games--but this is what worked for me. Let me know how it works for you and what party setups you prefer!
Nice video. All seven Xenoblade characters are viable for the game, and earlier on most of that involves quests, exploring, affinity, and the 152 non-superboss unique monsters. In terms of the five superbosses, cheesing it with ether or topple-lock means that quite a few character permutations are viable (even Sharla can play).
I wanna see someone do a run/battle with Sharla in the lead, and with Melia and Shulk on ai, just to see how bad it is

Sharla got shafted, all the other characters are great(Riki's my fave though). Whoever thought making the healer overheat and not really have any combo arts, was a good plan. They really should have taken the overheat off her in the remaster to at least make her useful for a defensive team as a healer. Wish they could have made her more useful for an ether team too since you have 4 options for phys but ether is really just Melia and Riki then someone to chain combo so Melia can murder them.
Actually, Fiora has a decent Ether set-up with Canon Drones II, Ether Drain, and the occasional Mag Storm, and you can spice it up with Final Cross in chains (just put Melia before Fiora to get max chain bonus)

I had good results while maining Sharla as a healtank with Dunban and Shulk, since they can use Final Flicker and Battle Soul very liberally to fill their talent gauge and kinda compensate for Sharla bad colour art variation, and even better, these are blue arts, so they chain well with Sharla.
Let's be clear, by good results, I don't mean anything near the top teams, but still it works well, and just shows that any team can work if you really put the effort in it. Some just have it far far easier.
Edit : also, you can make Melia IA work, even as a healer, but it requires a good understanding of her IA (she will usually go for the highest CD Summon and Copy it, then spam a low CD Summon, and you have to make her release by using the Focus command, and tell her to Summon again by going All-Out...yeah, a lot of micro-management, and nowhere near her true potential when mained, but still, usable).
I feel like Sharla would become a much better player if her talent art fired off a bullet that drained her heat and did more damage the more heat she has on her rifle.
These guides are so useful but I wonder if you're going to cover how to use the combat features for future connected

If I remember correctly, I mainly ran reyn and shulk along with whoever I felt was necessary for boss fights. Something about magnum charge, berserker and sword drive gets me in the mood to play reyn, and I can just warn shulk for monado shield or speed without having to wait.
I am all about Melia - Riki - Dunban. Getting all those dots on a super boss and watching their hp melt is very satisfying.
As far as regular playthroughs go, Shulk+Riki+Reyn/Dunban is also quite good as a general utility party with more durability than the typical Melia-based party and more healing than the typical physical party. It falls off somewhat in favor of the specialized ether and physical parties, but can be a good simple option for newer players just trying to get through the main story.
i'm playing vanila Xenoblade a lot of times(5-7 times) with farming bosses, do all quests, experential with party gems, skills e.t.c.
Best party: Melia(with right gems, skills and heavy armor) as a leader, controling by player, Dunban (tank with light armor, agro boost, debuff ether defence e.t.c) and Shulk.
With good setup Melia hit Electrick attacks ` 100k+ and Dunban hold this agro, Chill + Earth poison do fast damage to booses. immune to damage Melia skill amazing if you get aggro.

Alright Enel is the GOAT Xenoblade youtuber, you heard it here first
My favorite team is the team I used to slay the Avalanche Abaasy in my original playthrough on the 3DS version: Shulk, Dunban & Fiora.
Reyn won't use Berserker on single targets unless you use the "focus attacks" command, so make sure you do that at the beginning of every fight. This is similar to Melia's discharges and Riki's AoE ether skills.
Been just using shulk Sharla and Reyn since the beginning, but I used Riki instead of Reyn for the final boss so I could cheese him by spamming chain attacks thanks to his art that increases party gauge
My go-to party tends to be seven, Dunban and Riki. I like this party because they have a good synergy in Seven and Durban having a lot of red arts for chain attacks. Seven and Riki build the chain attacks ridiculously fast. While healing isn't always needed, when it is, Riki does the job regardless of being on AI or lead and all three have a great AI (arguably the best in the game, although Ryen is also pretty good).
As for their individual roles, Seven is my main damage dealer. A lot of people see her as a tank but as a protean, she can be built for multiple roles and Sword Drones X is massive damage-dealing attack. Maxing out Haste and Double attack through gems and having the usual Critical hit strategy through gems and skills. I tend to have her lead for the simple reason of wanting to ensure I have her talen art before a chain attack as obviously the main tactic is power through enemies and use chain attacks to take them down.
Dunban is Dunban..... need I say more? He is the agility tank, sets up strength up for the team and should just be on any party really.
Finally, Riki, as mentioned before he has the healing capability through you can do it but his main role is getting the chain attack up with happy happy and then everything else is just for fun. I tend to give him a good few red arts so he can keep the chain attack going with the other two and then his DOT arts like Lurgy & Burninate. Mainly because he easily sets them up when on AI and the chance to get an x5 say sorry is a lot of fun too, but it's not required as Seven is again the main damage dealer and Riki is to support. I also tend to give him an aura, which I tend to go with Play Dead as all his arts tend to gain aggro so he can easily drop it and let Dunban grab the focus again. I have had people say Melia can do DOT better which is true but as mentioned before, that is one of three roles Riki has, the other two Melia isn't nearly as skilled at doing. Plus, Riki gets DOT up quicker as Melia has to cast her elemental then discharge and has to be careful not to gain the aggro while Riki's natural HP means he can safely get the aggro and then use Play Dead to reduce it.
When battling more ether-based enemies like Tylethia. I do swap out either Seven or Dunban for Melia (who is always the leader). I normally swap Seven because it's one damage dealer for another but if I do decide to swap Dunban instead then I swap Seven over to a semi-agility tank, although these are few and far between.
One other major thing this team misses is the monado arts to handle visions but those are easily dealt with. I mean this because I wait out the timer and launch a chain attack to save the character if it would've been a killing blow. Or do it mid vision and get the damage rolling to take it down in one go. Of course, it doesn't always work perfectly but its a nice balanced team which covers pretty much all ground.
Talking about ai behavior was a good point to lead on, I usually consider the same thing in most jrpg's.
Xenoblade's IA could use a guide on its own, like how to unequip Shulk's Battle Soul, Melia Summon priorities, the effect of the Focus and All-out commands, what combos the IA can and can't do (Dunban IA can only use Thunder when sandwiched between ennemies, he'll never use Tempest Kick + Thunder for exemple).
With this chapter coming to a close, do you have any plans on doing guides for the X cast? Or are we holding out for a switch port? (Sometime in our lifetimes.)
haha I'd like to make guides on X but i'd need the demand to be higher with a port or something. And i'm not quite done with XC1 stuff yet, I'd like to keep covering everything I can.
@@EnelXC X is absolutely insane in terms of gameplay and guides... So much things and variety. If you ignore the cookie cutter blossom dance that is.

Hey Enel I really love your videos and it helped me tremendously to enjoy the combat system. However, I am struggling to hit the super bosses without night vision. Can you tell me how you managed to hit them consistenly without this gem?
Love how Dunban's *0 Resist* Tempest Kick is still more useful than Sharla.
My favorite team is me as Melia, then riki and Sharla. I feel like they make the machon melt and I love it
One party i found sharla to actually be good in (blashpemous) was sharla, riki, reyn. It’s really slow but sharla and reyn tanking everything while riki chips away at hp with DOT works more than you’d think. Still not as good as the setups you mentioned but it’s decent.
Reyn, Shulk, and Sharla is my main party usually. I have yet to die to anything but red enemies with that set up

Gosh I wish Sharla had more to her. I really like using her and she can do some really awesome things, but all the others are just objectively more effective. Ah well.
Yeah, she even has the slowest auto-attack speed, damn couldn't they give her just a second red art? Metal Blast would have been perfect for that.
One random fact you could've mentioned is that there are exactly 210 team setups in this game. There are 7 members, we choose 3 of them, and the order matters (for the party leader, chain links and so on). So we have permutations without repetition (since we can't choose the same character twice), which translates to 7!/(7-3)! => 7!/4! => 5040/24 => 210 :)
I want to get back into this game soon and would like to put my favorite characters into the party. Would a party consisting of melia(controlled), shulk(controlled when up against mechon) and fiora work? I figured it would result in fairly decent chainattacks...
Personally I think the best party comes down to personal preferance, my idea for the best party is shulk, dunban, and sharla.

I've been running Shulk, Dunban Sharla, or Riki, Dunban, Sharla for the longest time. It's been hard, but I win the battles of attrition in the end. I'm exploring Mechonis now, and I've switched to Shulk, Dunban, Riki and I've been DEMOLISHING enemies and easily grinding now. Sometimes, I'm in the middle of a Monado animation, the Riki will Break the enemy on his own, and Dunban will topple them. They're pretty smart about setting things up when I'm locked in an animation.
Memes aside, Riki is actually busted. He’s a great tank, debuffer, AND he heals more than all of Sharla’s healing arts combined.
Nah, Sharla heals more, thankfully, since it's 80% of what she does. You can't take that away from her, even if I agree that Riki is much more flexible and powerful overall.

I tried with the same party setup you had and even had all of the skill links that I could put on with my NG affinity coins and I can only have abassey down to 2/3 HP before he nukes the entire party with awakening. I don't have any lv 12 arts because I have not touched FC yet but is it that much of a damage difference to not have them compared to just level 10 arts? Fiora also just misses a lot after a while and I decided to use one of my weapon slots for night vision 6.
I think the biggest x factor is the superboss just deciding to use a big talent art and me having to waste a meter trying to dodge it and then missing a lot afterwards.
next video: what you would change about each character to make them better / more interesting? except like better AI
I honestly feel like the game is more fun without sharla because it becomes a lowkey dps race with you staying at a pretty low health for most of the fight (earlier in the game before you have all your skills and gems) and having to really plan out your chain attacks and art usage more to stay on top of the race rather than just winning a longer fight of attrition
