- Robo Hippy has done it again, he has gone and built his own Chain Saw Chop Saw, a great time saver for any busy wood shop.

I burn wood and live in the woods so I have access to a plethora of wood but getting it ready to turn has always been a problem. This gives me some good ideas, thanks 👍

Very smart design. Super special secret robo hippy skills. Hilarious. I picked up two Haddon lumbermakers, new in their boxes at garage sales. Thumbing through the literature, I just 'saw' a pamphlet describing how to utilize it as a chop saw. Subscribed.
You have a great set up there Reed, and the Lumbermaker is a neat piece of kit.

Sweet jig, informative video. Thanks for the chopsaw perspective. I've already got 6x6's rough cut from a local mill for building a shed, was looking at the Haddon as an aid in making square cuts in one pass, 45's degree cuts too. You've got me halfway there.
Brilliant!! I just came in from trying to slab a good size cherry tree into blanks. Maybe that's why the genius of this hit me so hard. I really like the idea that a turning club could have one of these ready to go for that tree call that comes pretty often.

I copied your idea, made a few improvements and very amazed of the quality of the cuts.

What changes did you make? I have been contemplating several. One would be to change the bracket on the Haddon Lumber maker to a bit circle/eye hook that would go over a pipe rather than a board. Problem is to try to make the cuts square, and had thought about a second eye on the tip of the chainsaw, or just a vertical post of some sort so I can eyeball it. I am thinking for the sled that it might work better if I cut a flat on the log blank at about 90 degrees to the direction I want to cut the slabs, then roll the log onto the flat, and rig up some sort of wedges to lock the lot in place, which would make it easier to keep the log stable while cutting slabs. I do want to do the hole rail system on concrete next time as well...

I worked with it all day today and a small mobile unit that works very well in the field.
A few minor changes keeps the log stable. Contact me and I will shear.

Like the posts before mine, great idea. On the safety piece, the protective kit one wears is obviously a personal choice..I am more afraid of the electric saw then my ms661c or ms880 since the electric saw will continue to cut through my 9 layer cut pants. Stay safe!

I like your thinking. That cutting jg is going to save you a lot of time. I was cutting along a vertical but this takes it much further. I always cut a accurate as I can and always spin it in my bandsaw and vertical cut the bark side off. Saves a lot of time.

For your next challenge, how about a chainsaw band saw? lol
I will be updating this, or shall we say, "New and improved".... Stabilizing the log as I cut is a problem. Finally figured it would be easier to cut a flat on one edge of the log blank, then let it sit on that rather than in between the wedges.... Need to do some sort of end things to keep the log in place as I cut...
Great idea. I love the concept. However, rather than moving the heavy wood with the sled, do you think it would be easier to just move the guide fence along the base and clamp it in place like a table saw fence? I see that Amazon has a similar timber tuff guide for under $30. I think I will order one and give it a try.

The brand that I bought is Timber Tuff but there are many other brands on Amazon for under $30. The system I came up with is scrap of plywood with 2 sacrafical rails screwed to to hold the log in one place. The Tee guide clamps to edge of the plywood where ever you want to make the cut. I usually set the plywood on the tailgate of my truck a roll the logs onto it from the bed, no lifting required. Here it is shown setting on a pallet. Simple but effective. Thanks to Robo for the inspiration.

It wouldn't be too difficult to make a ''Lumbermaker'' out of angle, plus maybe a piece of box section, and round. Add a couple of plummer blocks, and you're home.
Why did you reverse the chainsaw on the Hadden Lumbermaker? It seems that you would have better balance if you reversed the saw as it on the mfg. website.

Noticed your using a skip tooth chain. Guess less chance of clogging up. What size Husky is that? I have a husky rancher 535. Maybe not big enough.
Is that a skip tooth chain?
Yes. when I got my saw, the saw shop asked me what I was cutting and I told them mostly bowl blanks and ripping length wise. It is the chain they recommended.
Reed, I have a question about your safety pantyhose, where can I get em?
Support stockings, I use the more heavy duty ones, available at medical supply places. You can find some in the big box stores, but they are not the same quality. Your doctor may help you locate them as well, and you can get a prescription, which your health insurance may help pay for.
