Yes. I studied Shorinji-ryu, which essentially swaps the order of Pinan Shodan and Pinan Nidan. I think that Wado-Ryu does the same.

Actually, in Dento Shito-Ryu, this is Pinan Nidan kata. At least, in the Mabuni Kenwa line, we call it Pinan Nidan.
The Tang Soo Do version(s) come from Shotokan, but the final four knife hand techniques are low like the Shito-ryu version. Funny never noticed that until now after nearly 30 years of doing it.
Yes it is! most stances are deeper as well as moves being slightly altered for the shito ryu version but it is essentially the same as Wado-Ryu's pinan nidan
It is Heian Shōdan 平安初段 from the Shōtōkan perspective. The name of the kata in Shitō Ryū is Pinan Nidan 平安二段. Very nice perfomances, congratulations to both the practitioners! Ossu おっす押忍
The name of the kata in the creator's system (Ankō Itosu糸洲 安恒) was Pinan Nidan. It was Master Funakoshi (pen name Shōtō) who, due to the obvious simplicity of the kata, changed the order and made it the 'kata of the beginning' (初 shō means 'first, elementary').
@@nicolaeberbec3912 This is one theory, the other, it was Itosu Sensei, when he realised, that pinan shodan was more difficult, so he renamed both. Nindan became shodan, etc
@tinotrivino If it were so, I guess that the phenomenon you mentioned would be visible in the style Itosu ryu Karate. In fact, at least according to the videos searchable on TH-cam, this is not the case. To my knowledge, it was only Shotokan (ryu) that changed the name of these two katas.

Looks a lot like Pinan Nidan, could you do a video breaking down the Heian/Pinan Katas and which order dojos teach them?
I have my green belt Shito-Ryu karate and this is almost identical to heian nidan. Heian shodan is currently the kata I am learning and will be eventually tested on to attain my blue belt.

Please note Gichin Funakoshi founder of Shotokan changed the sequnce of their Katas. They switched Heian Shodan to Heian Nidan and visa versa. Shito Ryu did not. They found that original Shodan was harder than Nidan for the reasoning of the switch in names. Having said that - I study Shito Ryu we teach Pinan Nidan before Pinan Shodan to juniors for that reason.
so what would be heian nidan for shotokan is being teached as heian/pidan shodan for juniors?
@@charbelmoussawer2107 Nidan Kata for Shotokan is similar to our Shodan Kata (Shito-Ryu Style). "Ni" in Japanese is 2 - so Nidan Kata is No.2 Kata in the Heian/Pinan series of Kata. In our school we adopted the same sequence of teaching as Shotokan but not the switch in names. In other words we teach our Nidan before Shodan. It's not just for Juniors, we do it for all ages.
Good comparison video. Well executed moves. But I feel a smoother continuous flow from into the next, might be better.

I'm from Philippines, are you guys familiar on shorin ryu, I'm shotokan but my sensei leave us, then we decide to jump shorin ryu
I am currently training in Shitō-ryū, In the dojo I train this is nidan. Is this something that changes depending on the dojo?

Que escuela es mejor . Tengo 30 y quiero aprender Karate pero no sé si alguna es mejor que otra o como elegir la escuela ..
Agardezo que me orienten.
Busca diferentes escuelas y observa las clases de cada una antes de elegir. Mira si el enfasis es el arte o la competencia. Las de competencia no son las mejores, porque fuera del entorno de competencia no te sirven en la calle. Habla con los miembros, en especial los avanzados marron y negra y verifica cuanto tiempo les tomo para llegar ahi. Mientras menos tiempo, mas floja es la disciplina y la escuela y son basicamente un Mc Dojo (Supermercado de cintas y titulos). Como anecdota de mi entrenamiento en Gosoku Ryu cuando era adolescente, tomaba alrededor de 10 años el llegar a negra, a un ritmo de alrededor de 1 cinta por año. Mi ultima cinta fue cinta verde 4th Kyu (a un paso de la marron) en 8 años desde mis 12. Sufri una lesion no relacionada y detuve mi entrenamiento formal para seguir con mi carrera. Aun a mi edad actual de 59, no me ha podido vencer un cinta negra de TKD u otros estilos que usan el fast track que mencione anteriormente, porque aunque limitado por mi rango en Gosoku, el entrenamiento, constancia y disciplina del arte te hace muy fuerte aun en lo basico. No hay prisa en esto, busca calidad, un buen Sensei.
Well in MY opinion i think shotokan wins cause during the choreography, he seemed to have had more speed. This makes me want to learn shotokan even more.

Why did shotokan adopt the deeper zenkutsu dachi in kata compared to okinawan karate which are more upright and natural? osu!
The story is that Gigo Funakoshi was said to have been a big fan of kendo, kenjutsu and iaido and adopted their use of lower stances into shotokan. Its also where he got the idea for one-step sparring. He based it on the long range style sparring drills that are used in kendo.
Bent wrist in shuto uke is not good form, wrist must be straight, so say Ohta sensei.

Who in the world came up with a name like Shito Ryu- was someone taking a dump on the toilet seat, before inventing the name for that style?
The name Shito-Ryu was created by combining the names of the two masters responsible for the beginnings of the style. Shito-Ryu was developed and passed on from Master Ankoh Itosu and Master Kanryo Higaonna. In Kanji, the first two letters in their names spell “Shi” and “To” which are the parts of the name Shito-Ryu, Master Kenwa Mabuni combined them to create the name Shito-Ryu.

Yes, I can see a few differences, but I think both styles are still pretty similar. Personally, I have studied American Kenpo, Wing Chung Chuen, and have begun Goju Ryu and Jiu Jitsu, arts that are quite différent from one another.
I am not saying that Shito Ryu and Shotokan are not good styles. Not at all ! But, lets say my own martial arts life journey took me on different paths. And that's great ! That is how students and masters of different martial arts may learn a lot from each other !
