    In 1998 Sensei Enoda criticized my Enpi in my 1st dan grading. And I thought it was spot on. Hie took the time to explain the kata to me and I learnt more in 3 minutes than I did in 3 weeks of practicing where I knew I was weak

  • @theshotokanchronicles
    @theshotokanchronicles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I mostly agree. Gojushiho Sho and Gojushiho Dai should be about Gankaku in my opinion. Unsu of course should be at the top. I would have added Nijushiho and Hangetsu but I know you were focusing more so on tournament kata. Older competitors like myself like performing slow powerful kata like Hangetsu and Sochin. Sochin was my grading kata for my Godan a few years ago. Hangetsu will be my choice for Rokudan in a couple years.

    Talking about Shotokan competition, not WKF, there surely must be Nijushiho, Jitte and Chinte as well. Can't agree about Gankaku. In JKA they allow Gankaku for kids.

    • @Artahe
      @Artahe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that, while Gankaku IS a hard kata, it's also a very useful one to learn. Back when I was actively practicing karate in a dojo, I remember learning bits of Gankaku, most specifically the one leg stance parts (especially the turn to keage), not because we were learning the kata itself, but because the sensei was using these parts to teach us about balance. But, I also agree with Yusuke that it is a very hard kata to master.

    Very interesting take on the degrees of difficulty , but I would have thought Kanku Sho is at a higher degree of difficulty than enpi and Kanku Dai as it has two jumps which is one of the reasons you put Kanku Dai on high difficulty level was the Nidan Giri but also Kanku sho has the very quick change after the second jump. also Gankaku is not the same difficulty level as unsu , by the way Gojo shiho Dai is the longest kata with two moves more the Kanku Dai. Also I would have like to see Hangetsu , Nijushiho and Jitte which have seen performed in competitions but also Meikyo kata. sorry for the length of my comment but I really enjoy your videos , keep it up Oss

    I recently did a lot of research into Okinawan karate. If I understand correctly, and Kanku Dai is the equivalent of Kusanku, then it is probably the most historically significant kata in the list. Examining the kata, it seems to be a very useful kata to know. Having said that, your list is based on your estimation of difficulty level, and you clearly have greater knowledge in that regard.

    Enpi and Bassai Dai were the first advanced kata I learned after finishing the Heian series and Tekki Shodan (sadly never learned the other Tekki). For the longest time, Enpi was my favourite kata, until I discovered Gankaku and Sochin. I think Sochin has such a different... flavour... so to speak, from the other kata, almost as if it was from another style. I also think Chinte is a pretty interesting kata, and it's too bad we don't see it often in competitions.
    Also, I'm not sure I agree with Kanku Dai being harder than Kanku Sho lol

  • @shotoman300
    @shotoman300 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with all but kankusho. I feel that is a hard kata with the 360 jump and the jump crescent kick back kick. It may seem easy if you are athletic but try it if you are not. Your dynamics have to be on point to make your hips and explosion make the move. It is also the last pre step before the big jump in Unsu. Just my opinion though. Thanks for your videos i very much enjoy your teachings

    I know this is your opinion, in my very personal one, I'd consider the best katas the simplest ones, like Heian shodan, heian nidan and Taikyoku shodan, since the secret of karate techniques lies in the basic techniques, hence why there are many unbalanced karateka out there in terms of training, because they forgot that the basic from karate is the essence of training.

    • @haru_haru_har_har8213
      @haru_haru_har_har8213 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is some truth in this tbh. I'd actually go back to essential basics of movements and used the Heians as a base 🤣 If you can't make a Heian look good competitive, then you shouldn't be doing something like Unsu or Gankaku 👀
      But all in all, I think he's basically just ranking katas used for competition. So no one's gonna use Heian vs say any of these competitively

      @@haru_haru_har_har8213 Knowing the basics and attaching to them is what allowed to amazing senseis like Osaka or Nakayama to reach the level they had. Plus of that, one of the hardest katas ever is derivated directly from heian, Kanku-dai, which is a very tricky kata that requires to have 10/10 well established basics if not, you can see clearly when a kanku-dai is not well done, that's why many many competitors avoid it, since they don't train basics, they train complex competitive stuff (which I personally dislike completely)

    • @Artahe
      @Artahe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand, the heian/pinan kata were based on the already existing, more advanced kata to teach basic techniques of self defense. And, if you look closely, it makes sense. Take Heian Yondan for example, there's a part you find in kata like Kanku Dai and Kanku Sho (the shuto uchi part with your other hand at your forehead). Also, the prevalence of keage to enpi into the other hand, like in Heian Nidan and Yondan is also found in many advanced kata. So, it stands to reason that the Heian/Pinan kata would be absolutely vital to master before going to more advanced kata, given that they teach some of the moves that will come later :)

  • @djw9524
    @djw9524 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course this is an individual thing. But I would say for me the top 5 most difficult would be: Both Gojushiho - both are long, Dai (the one with ippon nukite, in some places may be referred to as Sho) being harder because if you do it proper you should really feel your left leg. Gankaku - obviously for balance, and it has very nice yoko geris, execution of which may vary. Kanku Sho - not particularly long, but it is sweet as it has 2 jumps, yoko geris, mae geris, the whole kata is a very nice exercise. And obviously Unsu - drop to the floor and the jump are worth to mention. Also in all of the katas as you go on in your training and look for places to improve you can find something to work on. These are just my personal top 5 hardest.

    LoL, I'd agree with you on Kanku Dai being long. And to be honest when done competitively, it's probably the most tiring out of the bunch. And this comes from your Average National athlete who's been doing Karate the last 20 years 🤧 Try doing it for 50 times 🤣 You'd get tired somewhere halfway. Second after that should be Gojushiho Sho/Dai in terms of endurance. And what I find odd, perhaps it's because of the power nature of the Kata, Sochin is actually tiring in the end despite it being short 🤣 When we have National trainings most of us when told to do a kata to repeat when we're tired, we'd automatically go to Empi 🤧 Since it's probably the least tiring competitive kata to do for reps. Especially, since it was more widely used as a Shitei kata over Kanku Dai a long while back 🤣
    Anyhow, I love how you put Sochin higher up there. A lot of the kids underestimate that kata a lot and tend to ignore it until taught properly. They'd usually prefer something like Kanku sho, Jion, Empi or Bassai Sho most of the time 🤧
    Anyway, hope to visit some of the Dojos one day. After all of what should not be named is over one day 🤣 My friend and I are planning to Dojo Hop lol. If that's actually a thing or allowed 🤧

    gankaku: that gankaku dachi before the yoko geri is insane
