I have about 500 plus hours in Bobcats... I used a cat here and there and thought they were decent but last year I rented a 239D similar to yours but smaller obviously... What a machine. I was absolutely in awe. I felt like I was on my couch working. I recently bought a S185 which is all I have... All I could afford.... But damn those are nice
Excellent video, great job. To compliment your comments, note positioning of Cat coolers/condensers vs others. Easy to clean debris and excellent heat displacement for high hyd temp attachments. Cat draws air from rear and exhausts it up and out, thus not blowing hot air and dust on your laborers. D's will have accumulators to let the boom down w/o engine power. Cat uses a patented cooling fan blast to dilute hot exhaust temps, operates @ 500-600 degrees max (check OMM on other makes/models for engine temps) and passive to the operator. D series skid steers are plug and play for Cat SSL work tool attachments with a hydro/elec worktools plug installed. Very important item to consider if you don't enjoy cords thru windows and poorly interactive, singular hydraulic function control for attachment setups.
the operator setting you said was for high speed travel set at 12.43mph is actually for what speed the load dampening system (i forget the actual name) kicks in. it cushions the boom and bucket cylinders for a little smoother ride. I love our 289 cats are the best especially when it comes to operator comfort. great videos too Ive watched a bunch!
I had a 259D great machine but didn't have the lifting capacity I needed so traded it well was goinng to get the 289D but cought a 299D2 on sale for just a hair over the 289d. So far loving it . It is a brute
The one we have gets used 24 7. It seems here at the mill. We're a 24 7 running mill day and night and over time it still goes and goes but man it's showing its age
Nice review. I've been operating a 289d on the job now for about a year I got it with 200hrs and it now has 1305 hrs and the hydraulics started getting weak around 1000hrs
Is there a fix for this? What do you mean by the hydraulics getting weaker? Is it not lifting the same weight as when new? I just bought a 2017 with 2500 hours and need maximum weight lifting.
hey man thanks for the video I'm one of your subscribers. I like cat bobcat and T-Rex. the wide track you showed in the video up top is the ASV posi track Patton that cat contracted out from asv it's the same deal with my Terex on all they hold up pretty good and give you a better ride than the full cat design but slightly less Hardy. I had this same machine two things I didn't like for Forestry the tracks are very narrow and where you show the accessibility on the hoses at first is really one of the biggest problems for us sticks always go in there and puncture hoses and other things. the other thing the door is in dire need of a reinforced upgrade. I talked to Kat about addressing a couple of those. because I like running the lighter machine this is actually the machine that should compete with the Bobcat t770 even there everybody tries to compare that machine with the 299D which is actually the competitor of the t870 I like running the lighter machines and wider tracks that's the most important things to me in the woods. I will give up every feature possible that keeps me from gets stuck!! or blowing hoses!! really nothing else matters if you can't perform your job and you can't perform if you're stuck or down for a hose!! thanks for the videos man keep them coming!! been watching them for a couple years now. I started doing some videos on my channel but just breaking the ice lol
Great video. We have 4 of the newer 289d3s and various other models. One small correction though is that the engine is not made by Cat. It's made by Kubota. I think if Cat had made the engine, they would have made the oil filter easier to service. Otherwise, it's a great engine. Between D and D3 skid steers, we have had nearly 20 of them and have only had one major engine failure, which was a blown head gasket.
Good machines but there are a few things to pay attention to with these (like any other machine out there). Biggest thing with torsion bars is keep them greased. If you don't grease them often the grease will get rock hard and you will have to pull the track frames to drill out the ports. Bolts holding the torsion bars to the inside of the frame, under the cab, like to come loose from vibration and should be checked each service. When the tracks get loose they can slap around and break the bolts holding the front torsion bar trunnion to the track frame. Also spend some time and put some hose gaurding around the drive motor hydraulic hoses where they come through the frame. They like to rub through there often. A/C lines to the condensor break often because they flex and sometimes kink where the rear door opens. A helpful tip: Pull the battery out to get at the oil filter easily. Only takes 5 extra minutes but saves a lot of cussing and swearing.
The MTLs are not dainty by any means imho. When I was doing flatwork I had a 287B that I bought brand new. The ride is way better and you don't lose material like in the CTLs. I know there are comparison videos where people try to make it sound like the CTLs aren't choppy, but the truth is they are. Even with the ride control on the CTL the MTL out-classes it in ride performance. The single bad thing I experienced was if operators spun into the pile when spreading gravel; especially chipped gravel. Spin into a pile of chipped gravel enough and you will eventually see chunks come off the bogies. I literally had to let a kid go because he wouldn't quit doing this even after being warned 3 times.
Do these machines have a lift limiter? I know with a bobcat I can fill the bucket with wet dirt causing it to tip but I can skip the bucket along the ground and ride on the front of the tracks. I just bought a 289D and don’t seem to be able to do this. It just won’t lift or even try.
Great video walk-around! Really helpful, I'm studying for CLTs in hardscape and we never know which machine they'll have on site, so for starters this was a great operational inspection. Really nice machine too, we have a Cat 247B here which is the only skid steer I've been trained on. Personally I think it's less confusing than Bobcats and foot pedals, but everyone has their own preference.
We just got a new 289d and used it for the first time today. I was curious how to change the controls. I never found the info in the manual. It's supposed to have that option so I'm not sure if it's a mechanical valve or switch button or setting in the display.
Very well done review!! Question I’m looking at buying a used 289D with all the same options with 1700 hours so how has this machine held up for you? And is there anything else I should know that you may have discovered after you made this video. Thanks again for your time and this video.
My coworker made the mistake of trying to remove the door. It will not operate without the door latched and is a pain in the a$$ to get back on. If anyone has any tips on putting the stupid red handles back in, that would be a handy video.
Excellent video. Thank you very well done and informative. you da man seriously THANK YOU!!! going to run one tomorrow for the first time and I feel well prepared. Thanks PEACE!
What made you switch to cat? We run all bobcats at the moment but are looking at a new machine and highly considering a cat 259d. Do you believe they are a better machine? How is the pushing and hydraulic power compared to a bobcat?
+Nursery Life We really felt the quality of Bobcats new machines was very poor. I know Cat makes a better machine. Thats why we purchased one. I love our 289D. If you want, send me a private message on Facebook (link in video description) and I can tell you more. Its a lot easier to communicate on there.
+Nursery Life Not to mention, Caterpillar dealerships carry between 20 and 40 million dollars in parts alone. What you think your saving on machine price, other competitors make up for in parts and service price. It could also take those competitors weeks to receive a part you need, which kills your machines down time and profitability. Just remember the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
FishFind3000 i have operated this machine in -40 c all last winter and had to have the windows open the heater in this is like a furnace toasty warn within minutes of running
Hello, I know this is an older video. But did you trade the 299d for this? Looking at a 2012 299d like your old one. Just curious what you liked better. Thanks much
Honestly, you should off took Bobcat instead. Usually this cat track frame got cricket or twist- in sideway when you abuse the machine through a tough job. I had to ask expert at the dealership before I purchase one, he told me its normal but it will wear out the track and some part of the frame.
Dirt Ninja, do you have a link to the camera that you installed on the Cat ? We have a Cat 242D with the deluxe display. Also where do you plug into the wiring harness ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I got it through my dealership. Its a Cat camera. Comes with easy to figure out directions and it literally just plugs into a cable in the cab. Very easy.
I really dislike the lift limiter on the Cat. Evreything else about it is great but I would prefer a solid rear like the bobcats so you can back into tress and such and just doze them over and the limiter. I can skip an tilt weight bucket on a Bobcat inches of the ground and riding on the front of the tracks, where I can't lift it with the Cat of a much higher weight class.
Nice lifting capacity. But I bought a kubota svl95-2 I would push you around. And it don't fell like im in a coffin. and i can get out at any time with any load with the over head door.
289D isn't a true match for the SVL95.....21HP difference. You're adding DEF for high horse, he's not. Don't pick a fight w/299D, you'll regret it. Kubota door is good stuff. Cat made a choice to go w/modular cab, air tight, lower dB ratings. Kubota's are a good machine. Weaker in hyd specs, weaker track system. Acquisition cost is less, cost of ownership is higher.
Great video Tom! Love the features on the new cat. It is annoying how people don't compare apples to apples with machinery and then like out at cat for being to expensive. Just a quick question what are red levers on the left of the windscreen are they like a emergency release of the whole door in case you can't open it because the bucket is in the way ?
The main reason im looking at this machine is to find out the real manufacturer of the motor,Is this a Kubota painted for cat,or is this a real cat diesel.i heard on others forums these newer diesels are Kubota's?Kubota and yanmar and Doosan seem to have the small compact diesels down pat.
I'm looking at a new 289D3, how is yours holding up so far? Curious why you went with the 289D vs 299D? I'm in the same boat and was considering the JD331/333G too, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 289. I was considering the 259, but even with the same motor as the 289, I think its a little undersized. Any thoughts?
I’m in the same boat have both a new 289d and a 331g demoing them now. The Deere def. has more power and lift. Cat rides better but scared of the torsion axles and them going bad. The Deere is a bad machine!
John-Michael Hinson I think if you keep them lubricated, you should be okay. I just ordered the 289D, should be done in 30 days. The 333G just wasn’t as smooth, rattled a lot and I’m used to CAT’s interface anyways. I’m happy to not be dealing with DEF either. Wonder if I could get a decent amount of extra HP by upgrading the turbo at some point, i dunno. One think that deere could not compare was service. CAT’s service department is a million times larger and that’s a big deal for me. They offered me a great deal for 72 months, I pulled the trigger today.
Nice video! I've been trying to get good long term comparison feedback between Bobcat and Cat....Seeing you run Bobcat for so long and switching must say something about recent Quality Control. We run Bobcats and sure they are great machines but I have noticed significant issues with the new Engines now that they are no longer Kubota. Other issues as well but that was one of the major complaints I have....Stepping into a Cat last week I immediately felt like I was in a quality machine! The hydros were super smooth and least jumpy out of most other Manufacturers imo. If I'm not mistaken, these Cats do utilize a dual hydraulic pump system which surely helps keep control smooth and easy. Sure, rear viz is not great but none of them really are and I'd rather have a backup cam anyway, even on a machine with better rear viz. lol. So...Feedback on how these Cats hold up long term would be greatly appreciated! Have you had any major mechanical issues so far? Or do you notice any weak points?
+David Cardone Not one issue so far with the Cats. After a year of running it I really love the machine. Extremely well built and well thought out. Everything is easy to do on them. We wont be going back to Bobcat any time soon.
Recommend BAR style tracks for snow/ice. The CTL's will not run with the MTL's in snow but the BAR tracks help. Offset lug are a no-go for any stiff u/c machine in snow.
I have about 500 plus hours in Bobcats... I used a cat here and there and thought they were decent but last year I rented a 239D similar to yours but smaller obviously... What a machine. Thanks for the great info on the CAT. I am debating between this unit and the Bobcat T650, or the new T76. This was great! Thanks man.
Kapper Outdoors me too! New 76 looks appealing
We have a 2015 249d and it has been in the shop more in six months then our 2010 247d has been the whole time we had it.

Billy Bob Any tip on the Bobcat T740? I'm trying to decide between the T740 and 289D
Bobcat all the way!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@Ramo-jw8iy Cat all the way!!!
I have one of these. It is a work horse. Just stay up on maintenance. Don't slack on greasing those BUCKET PINS. I learned that the hard way.
Awesome review. Excellent job. Just need it in action. I will be looking at this machine. Thank you.
plus factor in that purchase price will be retained much higher when reselling a CAT
Nb

Great, great, video; I see why you are so excited about your new rig. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching!
Well I'm going to have to figure out how to buy one of these now
Milton Cat! Proud to say that my dad works there! Sitech Northeast!!
Ran some of these doing geopiers last summer. Beautiful machines.
Do these machines have a lift limiter?

I just bought a 289D and don’t seem to be able to do this. It just won’t lift or even try.
How do you change the selection pattern of driving? We don’t have a rocker switch and it’s in mode 2 and we want it in mode 1
Where exactly does the back up beep noise come out of?
This guy's videos are amazing

I have a 2006 cat 257b and my lift arm won't go up/down.no light in dash and everything else works well but the right joystick.
After time how was this machine
Very well done review!! Question I’m looking at buying a used 289D with all the same options with 1700 hours so how has this machine held up for you? And is there anything else I should know that you may have discovered after you made this video. Thanks again for your time and this video.
Hey are you in Vermont? Milton cat isn’t far from where I live (Shelburne) unless that’s a different Milton cat.
Not too different from the 242D I run...great little machine, saves a lot of time on mill cleanup!
What is ground clearance
My coworker made the mistake of trying to remove the door. It will not operate without the door latched and is a pain in the a$$ to get back on. If anyone has any tips on putting the stupid red handles back in, that would be a handy video.
About to get same one in two weeks trading in a tak TL 10 that’s wore out.
Excellent video. Thank you very well done and informative. you da man seriously THANK YOU!!! going to run one tomorrow for the first time and I feel well prepared. Thanks PEACE!

The Wacker Neusen looks like they make a nice machine
Then need to get some heated joysticks/arm rests to! That would be a nice cold weather package
FishFind3000 I like that idea!
FishFind3000 i have operated this machine in -40 c all last winter and had to have the windows open the heater in this is like a furnace toasty warn within minutes of running
scwalsh1100 I noticed the seat warmer sure does heat up quick! Its nice.
Have you ever used a mower on a skid steer? I would like to start using a skid steer for mowing fields. Your thoughts?
***** I have not. However I know people who have and they work great.
***** used a bobcat brushhog mower on a t190 last weekend to mow 4 acres of of 3-4 ft tall weeds and grasses. Worked great and no complaints
Dirt Ninja This is random but have we ever seen your face in a video ?
is the bobcat 863 a good model
I have not ran a ctl that made me want to get rid of my t300s
The guys at the dealer actually call it the D2 of the skidsteer
Hello, I know this is an older video. But did you trade the 299d for this? Looking at a 2012 299d like your old one. Just curious what you liked better. Thanks much
I'd want add'l cameras- so cheap. and a sleeper cab for the truckstop cuties
Tom great review of the machine some really nice features
jackefrost Thanks for watching!
Hi Tom how are you I’m a big fan you I love your work that you do
Where is the button to release the attachments? Did I miss it or did you not show it?
oasis2533 look at 12:25 I show the button.
Dirt Ninja
Thanks! I clearly missed it the first time
Great review! Just need those light guards for the back lights. Bet it would look even better!
bwspyder1 Thanks for watching!
Can you switch control so it can be ran like a case skid steer?
Honestly, you should off took Bobcat instead. Usually this cat track frame got cricket or twist- in sideway when you abuse the machine through a tough job. I had to ask expert at the dealership before I purchase one, he told me its normal but it will wear out the track and some part of the frame.
What means "XPS"" ?
Just means its High Flow
Thank you so much!!! Your videos are awesome!
Can you do a video and tell us why you personally like caterpillar And towmaster
Is the 289D apples to apes with the T750? And what are your top 3 reasons for switching from bobcat to cat compact loader?
Daniel Hansen Yea pretty much apples to apples. Comfort, visibility and parts availability were probably the top 3 along with a bunch of other things.
Dirt Ninja Do you know the max lifting capacity for the T750?
Does it have Bluetooth?
Do you have a cutting edge on your bucket? Also didn't know if we could get a vid of a laser controlled grader?
***** Yes it has a cutting edge and I will have a video coming of the Trimble system!
sweet deal keep em coming!
try the 299 also keep those torsion pins greased alot
That was really informative I appreciate that thank you
Ninja some new CAT machines and switch between Cat and Deere controls can you tell me where and how?
+Neighbor's Envy The excavators can. Skidsteers and Track loaders only have one pattern.
Is it hard to clean the track the Bobcat T750 it is hard to clean
tyler murray No its super easy. Much more room than the Bobcat to clean. Thats another thing I dodnt like about the T750 we had last year.
What do the numbers mean on cat skid steers ie: 289D?
Roel Marez I have no idea. None of the manufactures number seem to make sense anymore.
It's nice to see u moving up in the world and running good equipment but it's also strange to see let's digit 18 running new junky case and sany
txpipeliner07 haha thanks for watching
Dirt Ninja, do you have a link to the camera that you installed on the Cat ? We have a Cat 242D with the deluxe display. Also where do you plug into the wiring harness ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I got it through my dealership. Its a Cat camera. Comes with easy to figure out directions and it literally just plugs into a cable in the cab. Very easy.
what is the cost of this machine brand new? arround 80000 usd?
Great review! Very comprehensive! 👏🙏
Who makes the machine for cat?where are the stickers made?are these Evan assembled in the USA?
Cat makes it at their factory in Sanford, NC. Good ol' American iron
Jacob Roe is this where asv used to be made?
Dale olson I believe ASV is make in Grand Rapids, MN
I thought cat bought asv
Dale olson they partnered up but Terex ended up buying ASV.
How much money does this machine go for the way it is setup ?
How do you activate high flow vs standard flow rate?
High flow and standard flow are on separate hydraulic connectors.
HOW MUCH did it cost ?
When are you doing you 305.5 mini video
Mike Mangione Soon! The trimble system review is coming this week.
Tom be nice to see you do a service on the machines when you do them. .
jackefrost Ill see what I can do!
good job showing the machine
We have one at work right now and the Deere is a way smoother machine by far
Nice lifting capacity. But I bought a kubota svl95-2 I would push you around. And it don't fell like im in a coffin. and i can get out at any time with any load with the over head door.
289D isn't a true match for the SVL95.....21HP difference. You're adding DEF for high horse, he's not. Don't pick a fight w/299D, you'll regret it. Kubota door is good stuff. JCBvsFendt yea good luck running a grader or box blade guided by gps with your kub
Very good review man, looks like a very good machine.
ozzy107 Thanks!
That was a great demo. Thank you.
Did you get the back up camera ?
Mr Ninja, how do you feel about New Holland skid steers, specifically the 200 Series ?
Looks like he answered you, lol.
Brandon Vella Yes they are emergency releases for the window. Turn the red handles and the window literally falls out.
Great review ,better than (unknowing sales reps)lol.
you do a very good job of explaining the real time uses of this machine.
again Good Job...
Bill Mitchell Thank you very much. Thanks for watching!
who's excavator at 13:13 is that?
machinery master Hopefully mine in a week or so :)
serios?
The main reason im looking at this machine is to find out the real manufacturer of the motor,Is this a Kubota painted for cat,or is this a real cat diesel.i heard on others forums these newer diesels are Kubota's?Kubota and yanmar and Doosan seem to have the small compact diesels down pat.
When is the review for the mini excavtor
Ben Turner Hopefully soon. Been busy trying to get some other videos together.
Do you own the case and Sany excavator and the bell dump truck?
Cat390D's Channel I think you have me confused for letsdig18...
Thank u for the review.
@@sodon10 How much did it cost you out the door? I paid 71,000 for mine 2017 including multi-purpose bucket and forks.
@@Ramo-jw8iy with financing and tax, it came to around $90k
How much do you save by getting one of these over the 299D?
How do you take it in and out of float mode
Yes do tell
Do you still have your bobcats or are you going to be using all cat now and sell the bobcats?
+Nick DAnnunzio We still have our A300 but thats it. We have all Cats now. Much better machines
Liked the review
what didn't you like about the t870 that you demoed
tyler newcomb Thanks for watching! The T870 was too big for what we do.
Dirt Ninja Thought you might say that, lol. Thanks for the feedback! Keep the videos coming...
Nice machine. Is it vertical or radial lift?
***** Its a vertical lift machine.
8:49 is that your old John Deere excavator in the background.
Can we have a walk around or a look at it please?
joshua sharpe Its not mine yet... hopefully soon :)
Welds at the cushion bars break what a pain in the ass to replace
so y did u decided to switch to cat from bobcat
Gerald Vandervoord Many reasons. I didnt like the T750 we has on lease last year at all.
How much was the backup camera?
464 list + 1 hr install in my patch
should add, machine must have LCD display (shown in video). Basic display machines can be upgraded to LCD.
Jeff Bauer thank you for the information I already have the LCD display so should be able to install it pretty quick
??? Cup Holder ??? I didn't see anywhere to put a beer
Michael Kalalau how could you work with a beer???when instructions are clear that "don't drink& Drive"???lol lol
Mike K.
There is one
It's close to the floor by your right foot
Very good information love you sir👍👍👍👍👍👍
@DirtNinja How do you think of this in the snow/ice?
Recommend BAR style tracks for snow/ice. The CTL's will not run with the MTL's in snow but the BAR tracks help. Offset lug are a no-go for any stiff u/c machine in snow.
J B thank you for info.
most informative review I have seen. Far better than the material CAT puts out. thanks! Incidentally, is the machine reaaly that quiet to operate?
Did you pay cash or sucker finance
