His timing was terrible. Those first two storms were extreme and rapid. I was certain, from personal experience, he'd not survive the second.
Too many people do go unprepared for the possibility of being stranded or injured on short hikes.
Gear for emergency, water, and food should always be part of the plan. You can use it later if you don't need it, but to need and not have is condemning yourself to desperate circumstances should anything go wrong.

I’ve “practiced” 4 season alpine techniques in January, in the San Gergonio wilderness. I use quotes because once you’re 1/4 mile up trail there’s nothing “practicing” about it. We were equipped with crampons, snow shoes, Yak Trax, ice axes, quality eye protection & appropriate clothing. We are all reasonably experienced backpackers and had just summited Gergonio the previous November. We carried ropes, rigging, and survival gear. And we were all late 30’s to early 50’s. Friends from work, we all did construction, warehousing or loading trucks. In shape, hardworking men. Competent men. It was BRUTAL. Some of the hardest aerobic exercise I’ve done. You’re never 100% certain where the trail is. There are tree wells deep enough to tumble into, snow collapses in on top of you & you’re essentially buried in acoustic deadening aggregate. Like being buried in sand at the beach. Sure you carry a mountaineers snow shovel. On your back. It can be worthless if buried headfirst in a tree well. There are snow bridges over ice. So one step you’re on powder, the next your lead foot splits out from under you. And as silly as this may sound it’s super easy to just walk right off a switchback and find yourself tumbling ass over tea cup down a 30% grade. Then into a tree well. Head first. Good luck self arresting tumbling down a snow covered wall that you’d abseil down under normal conditions. I kid you not, there’s 1,000 ways to get your ticket punched up there from December through March/April. Just like Mt Hood in Oregon, people underestimate it because there are shopping malls 30 miles away. Again I’m not claiming to be a super alpinist but we weren’t bumpkins with REI tags still on our gear, either. Wanna stay on the audience side of Rusty’s videos? Know what you don’t know. Never underestimate 4 season trekking. And never hike alone. Hate to say it but there’s just too many competent individuals “getting lost” in recent years.

The temperatures have been cool this winter and there have been several rainstorms since the storms that set in during the weeks after the search started. We did a short hike from Baldy Village in November: The temperature dropped significantly in the afternoon and there were patches of snow on the ground. From then, it only got colder and wetter (rain).

I frequent Baldy often in Winter to prep for bigger climbs up North in the Sierras, my 2 cents is he might have traversed into the more treacherous Northern face of the mountain. Weather conditions were very inclement on the day he set out and, perhaps through error or unfamiliarity or poor visibility or all the above, became disoriented and wandered off in the wrong direction when he reached the peak or neared it. The Northern side of Baldy has some very steep drops and avalanches are not unheard of in the area, especially now more than ever with the monster of a Winter we had this year. The snow pack was immense this year. I take Mr. Sands may have fallen to his death and remains have been obscured by the following days of snowstorms or walked into avalanche territory. It would certainly explain why S&R failed to turn anything up in all these months.
There's nothing at all surprising about this disappearance, I'm certain Mr. Sands remains should turn up around Summer time. As you already covered extensively before, we gets deaths on Baldy every years from misadventurers, typically amateurs. Although besides being a Celeb, Mr. Sands was accomplished mountaineer which gave me a little more hope about his chances of survival. That's out of the question now obviously.

Ive lived near the woods in Pennsylvania all my life. And have spent a lot of time outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. Ive listened to many of these missing persons cases. Just last weekend i went on a solo hike and found out just how quick things can go wrong. I reached for a small tree as a handhold, missed the tree, and flew headfirst down a steep rocky hillside. I lost my glasses during the fall. And even though i knew the area very well had a helluva time finding my way out. I was very lucky i didn't break my neck! And only sufferd a deep cut on my elbow and other minor scrapes. It happened fast and in seconds i went from being in control,to being in a potentially bad situation.

Animal predation is messy. Unlike humans, animals make no effort in hiding what they did. If they were using dogs, they would have picked up on this easily.
The pictures of the area you showed indicated large areas of loose gravel like material on the mountain. It would be possible for someone to fall into one of those ravines and in a avalanche including that material to disappear under it.
I think in some of these mountainous areas, there had been prospecting for and extraction of minerals through mines. Many of these old mines have air shafts, cave-ins and shafts created by erosion into them. I'm not sure all of these mines are known and even if a mine is known, once the main opening is closed, other openings that I mentioned before might exist or appear over time. Someone could fall through one of these and disappear, and the opening wouldn't be obvious or close up again.

Back in the 90s a few of us hiked to the base of a 300 foot dry falls in the Huachuca Mountains of southern Arizona. After just a few minutes right in front of us noises, sounding like a very loud "crack", was created by a large rocks hitting the limestone creek bed and shattering. I looked up and saw a bowling ball sized rock coming right towards me. It hit just a couple feet from where I was standing. The shrapnel knocked me off my feet and my knee and I busted from the fall. It was obvious that some derelicts were throwing rocks down the falls. We yelled and things got real quiet. I limped back to the trailhead with my bloody knee. I'm fine, thanks. The point, of course, is Don't throw rocks down a ledge when you don't know what's at the bottom. It could have been a lot worse.

I’ve climbed several 14r mountains in Colorado . I did a peak solo … man I probably won’t ever do that again . I got a bit over confident and did a little off trail free climbing (nothing insane but some good height ) and when I came back down it’s like … it’s like I was teleported to a different location . I know I know .. sounds unrealistic . But I swear I climbed up and I climbed down and it seemed like it was a complete different place . The trail was no where in sight and I was still close to the peak .I wondered around for a while and the reality of the situation hit em . If I didn’t find the trail again I’d be in BIG trouble as it was getting on in the day . I finally stumbled back to the trail and got outta there alive . But man , sometimes I feel like the mountains move around and can sense when you’re alone or in small groups . The mountain felt like it was trapping me but showed me mercy because it’s not like I saw the trail and walked towards it . I was just walking , looked around and I was on the trail. Thank you God

Odd thing; on the new 'Naked Lunch' Blu Ray commentary by David Cronenberg, he mentions all the lead actors except Julian.
When he first appears onscreen, he goes silent, then resumes his commentary shortly after.
During Julian's last scene, Cronenberg goes silent. Permanently. The commentary just stops.
    Very odd.

Thanks, Rusty, for going into this case so thoroughly. I especially like all of the scenarios, despite how farfetched some may be. I grew up in the mountains of Oregon, so I know how easily it is to get turned around and simply disappear; my cousin was one of the Boy Scouts that fell on Mt. Theilson in 1967. 😢 I hope he has a better outcome, but I don't think that'll be the case after this length of time. My heart goes out to his wife.

If you're referring to Julian Sands, he was apparently very familiar with Mt. Baldy and hiked there frequently. He was also a very experienced outdoorsman, from what I've read. Sometimes, accidents happen, no matter your experience or fitness level.

Anyone embarking on a risky outing like this one should have a satellite / GPS communications device. There are several good options. A little pricey, but an ESSENTIAL safety item.
A severely sprained ankle could be enough to turn a risky outing into a very tragic one and being able to call for help with location could dramatically increase the chances of survival when a situation turns from bad to worse.

  • @scot60
    @scot60 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Realistically he may never be found. Reports are that the area where his phone had sent out its last ping is very avalanche prone. Add to that the record snowfall and patterns of snow then thawing has created deep ice. It’s quite possible that his body may be encased in solid ice. Short of a complete thaw, it will be difficult to find his body.

I’ve hiked mt baldy in snow, rain and extreme hot conditions. I went to mt baldy about two months ago with snowy conditions and it was extremely cold with winds packing the snow onto the trail making it super hard to keep track. I had to cut the trip short after noticing I didn’t see anybody coming back down or down. I’m a avid hiker but that time was pretty intense I’d have to say.
