    This is one of the best videos i've ever seen on bike brake adjustment, no one ever mentioned about the spacer issue as the author did here. Thank You.. Very detailed.

    Watched about 5 other videos and checked another couple websites to try and find that info about the washer being the wrong way round.
    Thank you so much for this

    I suppose the thicker spacer could go on the inside if the rim is of a more narrow variety . Perhaps this is why there two sizes , for different sized rims

      Yes, you can experiment.

      If you look on the back of the package of Kool-Stop pads and the instructions for Avid V Brakes they both show the largest concave spacer used for 5mm and 6mm spacing on the outside of the brake arm. Those 2 options would more than likely be used to compensate for pad wear and not for brand new or slightly used pads.

      I have a brand new pair of asymmetrical v-brake pads to replace, but they have the L and R like the long parts of them, go forward. I put them in the tipical way with long part backwards... do that change anything? What should I do?

      Follow the direction. Long end facing back typically if you are sitting on the bike.

      you can put the thinner spacer on the inside closest to the brake pad as then you can have the pad aligned, not angled away from the rim.

    I bought a used bike and the rim was all scratched up because the pads were too close to the rim. Would you recommend changing the brakes? I am not sure how to tell if the pads are still okay.

    I followed this video and didn't change anything except the pads. It seem like the new pads are really spongy, they engage during the pull of the entire lever, but they just squish onto the rim without a lot of stopping power. I even bought another different brand of pads, but they still do the same thing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

      Maybe the rims surfaces are ready to replace. The braking system works well with both surfaces (pad and rim) in good condition.

      Did you fix it? Some bikes have a built in spring inline which relieves braking pressure. It's mostly found on recreation bikes to protect the (novice) rider from slamming on the front brake and crashing.

    At 5:30 the order of outside washers is opposite to how they were disassembled

    • @BikeTeacher
      @BikeTeacher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, on some brakes it may not make a difference as far as stopping power.

    I'd always found conical washers to be a mystery, but Kool Stop has a great diagram that I printed out and store with my extra brake gear. If TH-cam allows a link, this PDF is handy: www.koolstop.com/english/pdf/Inst_VBrakeThreadedthin.pdf If not, just search KoolStop Installation and find the PDF on their website. (Tip: Link works best if you copy/paste it into a new window)
