- I show how to upgrade an old mountain bike from V-brakes to disc brakes. I replace the wheels, install rotors, calipers, new cables/housings, and adjust everything. The disc brakes I used are Avid BB5's. I used 160mm rotors. They are mechanical disc brakes, so are cable actuated. The Avid CPS mounting brackets I used were 0mm IS for the front, and a 20mm IS for the rear.

i have a 2018 gt avalanche and it has all of the latest geometry and parts tech. sealed bearings, tapered head tube with fully integrated cane creek headset, hydraulic brakes a 203mm front disc a 180mm rear disc, shimano ice tech rotors with 365 calipers. i am upgrading to XT 8020 4 pot calipers. XT and XTR drivetrain, 3x9. i am upgrading to a 1x11. i am upgrading to a droppost. i have a 720mm bar a 45mm stem, a specialized body geometry power saddle. mavic rims, dt swiss hubs (350 series) dt swiss spokes and nipples. specialized grid series tires, a butcher front a purgatory rear. the bar is a bontrager rl 31.8, the stem is a kore. um thats it

I am so glad I saw this video, the bike shop where I bought my Giant bike 15 years ago said I couldn't upgrade and that if I wanted disk breaks, I needed to purchase a new bike.
After looking at my mounts on my Giant Left side fork and rear assembly, I was certain they are for disk breaks. Sure enough, that is exactly what they are for.
Now I am determined to make the change thanks to your video!
Great video. Very methodical. I have a MTB with disc brakes that I though were defective regarding their braking power. When I saw your video on the part that you adjusted the brake pads calibrating the discs' gaps with the pads and tightening the caliper bolts Bam! It hit me. I just loosened the bolts, adjusted the gaps, held the brake levers, tightened the bolts and wow! My bike braking power just became an absolute fix! Thanks.

*Some missed parts.. red reflector. No kick leg, the one in picture I got it separately. **Latest.Bike** Was easy to assembly. Instructions are clear. Very good idea to take it to a bike shop for tune up. If you have tools, knowledge and time easy to make it ready for a ride.*
This video was a real eye opener for me. I'm now looking at every used MTB in a whole new light. Checking for those mounting points. Thanks.

I got 2mountain bikes Gary fisher same models but 3years apart so I can change wheels with the newer one it also is disc ready but figures I like the older one better but the older one had a optional disc model so it can be upgraded but will need brackets in back and front
Great video! Your bike looks a lot cooler with the disc brakes on there. I like your explanations with all the part descriptions, torque measurements, and proper units as well as tricks to get the cables and bolts fitted properly. You rock!
Thanks for the video RJ. Did something like this many years ago and I had to use one of them adapters for rhe rear - worked a treat.
Quick tip - cut back zip ties using a pair of nail clippers - they end up looking neater and no sharp edges or plastic sticking out to wreck your fingers on.
My advice is to use flush cutters with zip ties. They work a lot better

I've worked with BB5 and they either work or they don't. Quality issues. And if they don't work, well your constantly adjusting them. But they work better than Tektro. The way I learned was using a business card between the rotor and rear caliper. Then doing what RJ did. RJ...you finally did a disc brake video. Thank you kind Sir!
Thank you for this. I just bought a 2014 REI Novara Portal that currently has V-brakes. It has the tabs for disc brakes. Additionally, the wheels it came with have the 6 hole pattern for disc rotors. So I was searching for a TH-cam video for a conversion to disc brakes. This is very helpful.

same for me, but having the mounts is the bare minimum I thought. Sometimes there is so much stuff to replace that the effort becomes too expensive for my bike.

Thanx for the tip on sequence for " torque arm, bike frame, washer, nut" , at the very end! My axle on the Gmac bike motor is about 8" long. Much too long for my frame, but I am afraid to cut off excess until I know EXACTLY how much I need to attach hardware nuts etc.

this was an excellent video. i just changed a 2004 Trek/Gary Fisher bike to Avid BB7 calipers, 160 shimano rotors and 26" Alex Ace 17 wheels. everything went exactly as shown. total cost was about $400 canadian. the braking is not as good as hydraulic brakes, the cost of which would have been just too much, but they're better than the rim brakes. because i ride a lot of single track with steep hills and lots of turns if felt it was worth the expense. i wouldn't do this for road riding.

you are absolutely right. .new wheels, normally new gears, disc brakes, and sometimes even the frame doesn't have the adapters he is showing.. so it's almost new for everything!

Nice transformation. On a side note: I hate Avid BB7 callipers they're so damn annoying. Even if I set them up so they don't rub, they will start rubbing against the disc again in a very short while. I have not used the BB5's though. I will change mine out to the TRP Spyke.
i have the TRP spyre(road version of the spyke, less pull), best upgrade i have ever made in all honesty. Brakes dont rub, feels more powerful and best part is both pads if set up properly will wear even meaning no annoying one pad wearing quicker then the other or pushing of the disk with has the potential to slightly warp the rotor. Currently have a couple hundred miles and ever since the first adjustments, still no problem at all. Just the standard brake cable initial stretch after initial installation. I got mine off of ebay for 60 bucks, came with rotors, highly recommend if you are willing to wait a tad bit of time to get em from there, if in a hurry/need them immediately could always buy directly from TRP.
Most important thing to note though is the types of mounts your bike has for disk brakes, then buying the adapters if needed. TRP sells all the types directly from them which is great.
That is the newer post mount setup. They sell adapters for those. Search for post mount adapters.

Now for the constructive criticism. Better lighting of the detail shots and a plain and uniform background would be advantageous. Minor points to take a good video and make it Great. Still, far better than most videos and way better than I could do.

No. They are short pull. You need long pull. Or a travel agent.

Get a better bike, your frame will be limiting you more than the breaks

I wouldn't do it unless the frame has mounts for disc brakes. Cheaper, easier, better to bike a bike with disc brakes.

Somethings are explicitly in metric, some things aren't. I live in the USA and we predominantly use the imperial system.
And in the United States we tend to get a mixed bag of metric and imperial on anything we work on, so mechanics of all stripes have to have both sets of tools usually.

Are you going to sell this or use it yourself? I've thought about doing this to bikes that I flip but the cost of the wheels and brakes does not seem worth it. People never want to pay for upgrades.

Andrew Triggs ....I at times use RJ the bike guy's videos to fix bikes as a hobby. Unless you get a fantastic deal on a sought after bike you never real make your money back. Personally i just like doing it and unfortunately can't keep them all. so i don't sell them for profit just enough to get another one to fix up. My two cents worth.
This bike has 0 value. People won't even want to pay the cost of the parts.
In other cases, you might already have a decent frame and suspension. In this case, upgrading it is cheaper than buying a new bike with a similar level than your current one will be after the work.
In my case i had a Scott Mountain Bike with 12 years already with lock suspension and wheels / frame capable to support disc brakes.
Upgrading it with entry level disc brakes and a better suspension will set me back around 200£ but for those same 200 i would NEVER get a bike with those same parts.
So, really, it's about learning the cost of parts and bikes.
Also, there is a growing market for vintage bikes with updated parts. With all those hipsters walking around town, good money can be made trough them.
I've recently been to a town where this cool shop ran by this young kid was doing great. He would buy old road, city and vintage mountain bikes, for nearly nothing, strip them clean, paint them, restore what could be restored and then update them with disc brakes, led lights, incorporated usb chargers, better suspension etc.
He easily doubles the investment in each personalized bike and sells everything he makes.

i just saw i video right before watching yours of a guy in asia using those exact same adapters you had for this same conversion but he actually installed 2 new hubs for 6 bolt disc brakes, apparently those adapters do work fine.
that's a nice looking Diamondback. The new black rims and disc brakes changed the whole look of that bike. It looks a lot better with the black rims and the disc brakes. They give the bike the look of a higher priced bike. Next upgrades would be the crankset and rear derailleur if you want to go that far with it.

So putting disk breaks on a bike that is already equipped for disk breaks.
But didn't have disc brakes.
Alot of times bike companies will have different versions of the same model all using the same frame but with different components, such as entry level model with cheap components and an expert level model with more expensive components
got a trek 4300 for 20 $. looking to turn it into and e-bike. thanks to your video, this will be my first step.
all you need is an e-bike conversion set. from 500$/€ upto 1000 depending the battery capacity and motor. however it all adds 5kg to your cycle what. you will feel when you run out of battery.
I recommend it if you cycle opposite wind or live in hilly area

Im recommend using little bit bronze grease back side on the brake pads. Just a film coat not too much . Its reducing friction from pad pusher axle in brake caliper. Because, this axle turns when you push the brake . Also use high quality brake line and add some grease on it. Works almost perfect like hydraulic brake if you did this.
That fork and frame is cool. It can have V Brakes or Disc brakes. Awesome.
