PMDG 737-700 for MSFS - Tutorial 1: Safety Inspection, Powerup and Walkaround

- Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot. You called for it so here it is: The first in my series of tutorials for the PMDG 737 for MSFS.
In this tutorial we will look at the Safety Inspection and Powerup of the airplane and we will conduct the walkaround.
The video has been taken using a pre-release beta version of the product, so you can expect to see some issues that will be fixed before release. There's no need to point those out as the team will be aware and working on them already. For example the textures on the outside of the plane on this particular livery in use are not yet up to the quality that PMDG aims to achieve in the final release version.

These tutorials are not designed as absolute beginner tutorials. It is expected that the viewer already has basic experience with airliners and knows the basics how to operate an aircraft.
Instead these tutorials will focus on the 737NG as an aircraft and the particularities of how to operate it.
I'll be closing this introduction by saying that I'm not a professional TH-camr or Streamer and these videos are my very first that actually get more than a hundret clicks. I have never before created such content so bear with me for doing beginner mistakes.
I record straight from the sim without any fancy stuff going on in the background.

Hi there!! A&P tech here and I just wanted to point out that is not a fuel overfill vent. Yes fuel can come out of it but it's main design is not an overflow vent. They are called naca scoops and their main design is to provide ventilation to the fuel system and tanks. This is why it's pointing into the direction of flight and has a scoop design to allow airflow into the system and tanks.
Real procedures from a real world pilot for my favourite airplane exactly what I hoped for to learn everything before the plane releases. Thanks a lot for this and I am looking forward to the other tutorial videos.

I flew 737 through fs2004, fsx, p3d and I own msfs now. Thank you for your dedication. Right now I have to watch all your videos in order to be a pro haha. I will learn new things for sure because some panels were inoperate in previous simulators.

I spent two years working at Heathrow loading/unloading catering. I often saw the crew doing the walkaround, and always wondered exactly what they were looking at; some of it is obvious, some of it is not. Thanks for the excellent info.

The wait for the -800 will be excruciating
I can wholeheartely recommend getting and enjoying the -700 until the -800 comes out. I'm sure you'll find at least one or two airlines operating the -700 that you could fly.

Fantastic presentation
The amount of detail pmdg puts into its models is really impressive. They have also managed to simulate the feeling of flight without us feeling any g forces. Your videos are fantastic Emanuel, they really add a lot of value to a in my opinion very attractive simulator, compliments to Asobo and Microsoft for stepping into this arena. One thing, as I get ready for descent I have to predict the fuel value at destination airport into the FMC in order to calculate the correct flap and speed configuration during the approach. I forgot how to do that, can you help me out?

Thanks for this beautiful tutorial! I have a few questions regarding RYR procedures:
Why does the captain do almost all of the flows unlike Boeing, if you know?
Why does RYR use the "gear up, positive rate" callout? I know SWA uses something similar, where the pilot flying calls "landing gear up" and the PM verifies the call and responds, "positive rate, landing gear up."
If you leave the fuel pumps on for so long during your preflight flow, does that do anything to the lifespan of the pumps? I know that most companies leave them off until just before start when they're needed, but RYR uses the old Boeing fuel pump logic (which I like).

Great video. I have one question. What do you use for camera positions? . Ezdok is not available for msfs.
Simply the default MSFS functions. No external tool in use for the camera.

a cool thing would be if there were normal failures, like open hatches, bulbs etc, and you must report and "fix" to be able to fly the plane in the game.

Yes, it'll work for any 737NG.
Thanks for the really nice videos so far! One small question, is there a keybinding, or a way to set a keybind to toggle the landing gear into the OFF position currently? This is with regards to using physical landing gear lever, and im wondering if its possible to toggle the OFF position when I move the physical lever to the OFF position. Thanks :)
At the moment there is no such key binding. Right now Asobo (the MSFS developers) still restrict what you can access with the programming language used by PMDG. Once Asobo removes this restriction from the base simulator PMDG will add key bindings in.
For now they are able to read most of the default bindings which do work with the airplane. However I don't think there is a binding for an OFF position of the gear lever in the default sim.

The fluffy seats are to gather sweat and keep the pilot comfortable . Its sheeps skins . Motorcycle guys use them also .
You are amazing. I think that you follow RYR procedures. To be honest sometimes I can not find the logic between the sequence of some procedures. For example, why to make the engine fire warning test then go to overhead panel and after some steps return to cargo fire system. For me it is strange moving up and down. Is there a logic behind it? Thank you very much for your work.
The logic is that in case there is no GPU available you would have to start the APU at this point.
Once AC power is established we move on to the overhead and start making the airplane safe by arming the emergency exit lights. If we did that before the APU start/before applying external power, the lights would turn on and drain your battery.

Hi, there's plenty of checklists available through google. PMDG includes a tutorial flight, but to be honest I'm not quite sure if checklists are included in it as well.

I've just reviewed 6:12 and the surrounding times but do not find the term NHO used there: Could you point me to the exact location where I said this? I'll be glad to explain then because right now (okay, it's early in the morning and I flew a long night shift yesterday) I don't know what exactly I might have meant with the term either.

@@kendalley2314 Thanks, I see what you mean now. Actually, I think I could have pronounced my words a bit better. The exact text I'm saying is "From here, make sure we have the fire extinguisher here". The "NHO" is probably just my bad pronounciation of "make sure".

I’ve often heard that you put the Position Lights to Steady once you have AC Power. Is that airline specific or is there another reason that it wasn’t done in that tutorial?
The switch is normally left in the STEADY position anyway - so once power is applied it'll be on.
While you are right that the position lights should be on once AC power is applied to the plane it is not specifically mentioned in neither my former airlines, nor Boeings own SOP, to switch the lights on immediately after applying power.

How do you set your correct sitting position from the height What is the reference point? Airbus, there are white and red balls that you have to line up in order to sit properly

Basically, you need to be able to see the top of the glareshield slightly, but the control column must not obstruct the view of the PFD and you must be able to see the autobrake disarm light.
When all three are met you're sitting correctly.

It's indeed going to be a huge leap forward! So far I'd say the Aerosoft CRJ is the leading airliner in MSFS, but that's surely going to change soon!
I really like their CRJ, flew it for a long time and it's a great plane for its place in the market, thus if you're looking for full realism it can't hold up to the 737.

Before you head out for the walkaround, I understood the reason behind turning on the parking brake and the electric hydraulic pumps but is there a reason NOT to turn on the wheel well lights? Are they only used at night? I mean a lot of lighting is required during the sunniest day in aviation so I am just curious.
There is no reason NOT to turn on the wheel well light. The wheel well is pretty dark, even during bright daylight (especially then since your eyes are used to the brightness) so turning on the wheel well light can never do any harm.
Can You Help with setting up the Airbus TCS throttle quadrant with 737-700? I can't get the throttle to move forward while the reversers work fine

How do we start cold & dark (I got that set) but also not have stairs but jetway instead? Is there a way to start with the plane not connected to jetway or stairs until you request?
You'd have to create a new panelstate. I suggest loading up a default cold and dark panelstate and removing the equipment you don't want, then saving it again.

Well, the only answer here is: Because you haven't done takeoff configuration.
The most common mistake is that simmers try to arm the speedbrake for departure in Boeings. Don't do that.

Don't you also have to check the master caution when running fault inop part of the fire test?
Yes I do. However I skipped this part because in the PMDG 737 currently the test only works for so long and thus I had limited time.
If you watch closely you'll see how the test finishes a split second before I'm able to silence the fire bell as well - but since that happened in such a short time I thought hardly anyone would notice that I didn't press the button LOL

How is it MSFS got the 700 before getting 800 & 900. Always before the 700 was the extra expansion you got after the base model 800 & 900 was the base model in PMDG. So I guess in MSFS 700 is Base & 800 & 900 are going to be the expansion instead this time around.
That's a question I can not answer, you should ask PMDG directly. I believe they actually posted an explanation in the forums already. Try to search their forums and you should find an answer.
Every model will be a separate package. So you could just choose what model you want to buy. The 700 will release first then the 600, 800 and finally the 900 and finally theax series will also come. This way you can just pick a model that you want and not have to buy a 150$ package with all models.

There is no releasedate published at the moment. Early Access is restricted to members of the tech- and betateam as well as a few streamers who are good friends of PMDG. There is no way to join either beta- or techteam at the moment.
What are you using to move around the cockpit, track IR?
All default sim controls operated with the keyboard and mouse

I can hear ATC talking to me, but can’t hear my reply’s, how do the radios have to be set?
Select the microphone switch on the ACP to the correct radio and you should hear everything.
If you want to listen to more than one radio make sure also to use the volume selectors and turn them all the way up.
Can you ask pmdg to correct the yoke 3d model. It looks like 70% thickness of the real thing
mmh, I can't share your impression. I'll take some screenshots today and will bring them to tomorrows (real) flight to compare.

@@teropa79 I did, it's certainly better than 70%, but not quite at 100% I have to agree. Details are in PMDGs tracking system already.
My guess is that it's not going to be fixed for initial release but with a later update.

I don't know any date, but it shouldn't be too far off.
Will there be an P8 Poseidon version for MSFS?
I think PMDG said something about considering it as a later expansion maybe, but don't quote me on that. I know for sure that initially there will not be a P8.
The types to be released with the PMDG 737 for MSFS series will include the basic airliner models, the freighters and the BBJ family.

Yes, it will. However not on initial release. There's some issues with the xbox plattform that need to be sorted out by Microsoft/Asobo first before they can release it on that one. When that's going to be? I'm afraid I do not know.

Could you confirm what exactly you mean with "put a ramp at the back of the plane"? If you mean the stairs, you can select this in the PMDG options from the CDU screen. They're a feature of the aircraft, not of the simulator, therefore they'll only be available in the 737 (and future PMDG releases).
Currently the aircraft is still in beta so you can not buy it yet. Once it's released you'll be able to get it from pmdg.com.

If you go to their website its says: "High resolution cabin models and landing gear bay interiors for all 737 variants remain in development and will be added during maintenance updates."
