In this video you will learn how to sing with Rasp and Distortion The SAFE way. If you have wanted to learn how to sing with a raspy voice, this video will help you learn how to sing with rasp safely without damaging your voice. You can apply this technique to any raspy singer, but I've used Bryan Adams' Summer of '69 as an example because Bryan has such a lovely naturally raspy voice.

    About Me:
I am a professional singer with 30+ years of experience living in Dublin (originally from Ohio) and singing regularly in cover bands throughout Ireland. Over my career, I’ve sang in bands such as “The Runaways” (not the Joan Jett band, we were only 15 at the time and hadn’t heard of her band - this was before the internet!), and “White Knights” - both of those bands in Ohio before I moved to Los Angeles and formed an original band called Mood Trip, which was fairly successful in the mid-late 90’s producing our own music (listen here: www.moodtrip.co...) and playing the sunset strip regularly (Whiskey, Roxy, Coconut Teazer), but eventually I married an Irish girl and moved to Ireland where I have sang with cover bands such as The Glitter Bugs, The Usual Suspects, Spring Break, and Masquerade. I have also recently started teaching vocal tutorials at BIMM Dublin as well as singing in cover bands regularly for a living now (scrapping the day job and focusing only on music since 2018). I have been lucky enough in my career to support Cher in Belfast SSE Arena 2019, and sing U2’s “Vertigo” with U2’s very own drummer Larry Mullen on the kit in 2016.
    Why listen to me?:
I didn’t start a good singer so I’ve learned a LOT over the years and I want to pass that learning on to YOU now.
I’ve made a TON of mistakes on the way and damaged my voice at times in the process of learning the right way to sing (via the WRONG way!) - with that, I can save you damaging your voice through bad techniques
I’m DOING it on a regular basis - performing is how I make my living so I am WALKING THE TALK OR TALKING THE WALK (whatever the phrase is)…
I CARE about YOU and serving you the best I can….why should I care? It’s my Dharma (life goal/path) to sing (perform for people) and help others who are learning to sing and perform, to help anyone who wants to get better…with that, THANK YOU for watching!!!

Hey I've seen a lot of these how to "sound like "videos on all sorts of guys, but i haven't seen one on Dan McCafferty of Nazareth. That guy is the GODFATHER of high, raspy vocals... influenced everyone from Bon Scott to Axl Rose. I feel like he is the one to study because he is in his 70s, and STILL is nailing it with the same voice. That's the guy. Can you do a video on him..?

completely unrelated, but this reminds me a little bit of how when a lot of people try to imitate that "old timey" Southern accent, particularly a nonrhotic variety (no R's after vowels), there's a tendency to go waaay to whispy and let too much air out and devoice stuff, it just doesn't sound right.
In reality a proper southern accent is very.. connected is what always comes to mind. See when you make your voice whispy, air's coming out and it's devoicing the sounds you're making. When you don't do that, there's this buzzing smoothness that continues all throughout the utterance, and that's part of a Southern accent, it's like a legato feel.

I'ts been almost 10 years that I want to learn how to sing with distortion but I never could. Your video helped me a lot, it was the only one that did, but still I'm having a lot of trouble with getting that distortion, I can activate the vocal fry, but I can't sing it loudly with the vocal fry. I can get a very little dirty on my voice when I let less air come out like you said, but then the distortion is not powerful. I other words, if my voice is loud and powerful it's not distorted. Do I have to combine the vocal fry with the baloon thing you said in you video about compression?

why not just say it. Bryan Adams has a high-ass voice so when he sings in his chest voice, he can just add the rasp easily. He's not straining to hit the pitches nor is he doing any kind of head voice or special technique. It's like a vid trying to teach someone how to sing like Dio or Brad Delp. If you have a tuba, you can't play flute parts. Thx for trying tho. At least this will make singers aware that there are different sounds they can make w/o yelling loudly. 4:25 yours is strained. Bryan's is still controlled and not into any mix or head voice. I'd advise people to sing inside their comfy range (key) while working in practice mode to extend their chest voice range as much as nature will allow. 4:28 literally sounds like an 80 year old man trying to sing a Bryan Adams tune. Bryan is not squeezing and straining like that. His voice is open and the basic timbre does not change as he ascends in pitch. oh well....

@@RockYourBestVocals Oh, thanks and sorry if I sounded a bit harsh above but I just know from watching a lot of vocal tut vids that every single one where a baritone is trying to sing high sounds really strained OR the timbre is not correct because they are having to resort to some kind of mix or head voice to reach pitches. I mean, I realize guys like Brian Johnson and Tom Keifer used a gravelly falsetto of sorts but on my covers I sang it in lower keys then pitch shifted it up to the orig key (cheated hehehe) so even I know that even if I trained for years, I'd still not be able to sing the stuff going up past C5. BUT... you can increase your range and ability and that's still a good thing because you will just sound like you or something and here's my thought.... the MAIN thing in singing is hitting your pitches with stability. Timbre actually is secondary. I mean, who would have thought Bon Scott would sound good singing by listening to him talk? Yet... he was hitting his pitches and had crazy range so... that combined with that evil weird tone... it worked. I'm rambling. But thanks for the nice words. I stopped uploading because of personal reasons beyond my control. I doubt I will ever upload to that channel again. I haven't really sung anything much since I stopped uploading there. Been doing house repairs and voice acting and just trying to get from one day to another. Hope you have a good Christmas and New Years!

    • @RockYourBestVocals
      @RockYourBestVocals  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Of course you can get that "Stevie" rasp in your voice, it will just take work for you to learn how to apply it to your voice without damaging your voice. I'm not sure if her voice became raspy due to touring/excessive use, but you can certainly apply rasp safely for stylistic purposes. It will just take some work and practice. If you want to book 1:1 sessions that's probably your best to work directly with me on this for a clear path of what you can do to achieve your goals

You think Chester Bennington was doing it wrong since his voice got noticeably weaker over time and tiny? I think he had to get surgery don’t at one point but I forget.
Your distortion voice is really good when doing that Bryan Adams song. That’s almost exactly the tone I’d go for in distortion, very musical sounding like a guitar over driving the tubes.

it takes time to get this, so you have to just keep working at it... if you really want to sing, you will keep at it. If you don't want to learn how, you won't.... if you want to succeed at something (anything in life!) you must remove that word "can't" from your vocabulary....

    • @RockYourBestVocals

Depends on the context. I would suggest that I’m always singing with some level of compressed sound - it’s a matter of adding more to increase volume (while limiting air release)

@@RockYourBestVocalsI bet they mean the "harmonica" sound that is there intermittently. As to the answer: I'm betting that at higher volumes (like how loudly and quickly you'd be singing in a real situation) that would either go away completely, or get lost in the overall sound. It sounds like an artifact of unnaturally slowed down "demonstration" singing.

Interesting, but a singer like Josh Todd sounds like he's doing it the wrong way. It's odd, but for me it depends on the song. I can sing "Ace of Spades" like Lemmy the right way, but when it comes to other songs, like "Lit Up" by Buck Cherry, I have more difficulty without doing it the wrong way. I think the "Correct Way" leans heavily on the microphone and the wrong way is as if you don't have that amplifier.
