your voice is so impressive. it's very inspirational!! i'm having trouble keeping the air in, and not let it come out in a huuh breath, any further advice?:)
Few questions from a fellow voice teacher !! 1. What should this feel like ?? Pain wise lol. I think I just have the gain the muscles , but my voice does get tired pretty quickly from doing this . 2. Does this apply to holding a clean note and then adding compression later on in the note ?? Because if I'm not starting a note with a harsh glottal , how do I get the compression to start up in the middle of the phrase/note ?? 3. I usually "grunt" (like a Christina Aguilera type growl) . Is this similar in any way , or not even anywhere near it ?? 4. I feel like this is sort of like valsalva and I know that not to be great for the voice , causing too much subglottic pressure . What is the difference between this technique and valsalva ?? Sorry to bombard you with so many questions , I'm genuinely trying to learn for myself and so I can teach my students LOL. Great explanations , thank you !!!!
Hi Emi, I'll do my best to answer you 1. Pain is always bad in my opinion.. As far as tiring, if you've never done any pushups you would get tired very quickly too, yes? I think maybe it's just persistent work to develop the muscles and muscle memory. 2. Compression is the product of expulsion pressure of air against the holding back of air... think of a balloon in your hands if you hold the balloon with the 'opening' at the top and push up on the bottom the air will come out (unless you hold the 'nozzle' closed). Hope that makes sense! 3. As for the Christina growl, without seeing/hearing how you accomplish that I wouldn't know. I'm sure you can appreciate that can be done in different ways and also I'm sure you can appreciate that it's hard (almost impossible) to understand and answer some things with mere words... 4. I've never heard of 'valsalva' so I'm not sure (I am not trained in the 'academics' - I just share what has worked for me to get my clients' results). I do understand 'too much' subglottic pressure can be 'bad', but how much is 'too much'? I always do my best to release the pressure 'just enough' for a balance. If you want to book a free 15min zoom consultation (via my website) I can address point 3 better, otherwise I hope I've helped you! All the best, Jim
Hey man, great lesson. I'll be singing better than my front man if I stay with you. BTW, I'm going to borrow your hand gestures to explain how the diaphragm moves to teach patients with breathing difficulty how to breath.
Hi Rodger, Glad you enjoyed it! Send your front man this way so he can catch up to you - haha! BTW go ahead and borrow the hand gestures... I have some more breathing tips coming soon! Many of the classical masters described breathing down into their lower back as if their buttocks are balloons and they are trying to fill them up.... hope that helps!
Hey Tim, thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it... I always expect more views, so I agree! 🤣🤪😂 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - I appreciate you! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Thank you Jim, man when you talked while holding your breath and pushed with your abdomen, that also can be considered as an exercise as well right? I feel like this can help us to get used to using compression 😊
Yes, of course and GREAT POINT! Anything you do that helps you to practice this type of 'muscle memory' can be considered an 'exercise'... often I just walk around holding my breath and letting the SMALLEST amount of 'squeaky noise' out my nasal cavity.... SUPER ANNOYING for people around me, but HEY - you GOTTA keep VOCALLY FIT, right? LOL!!! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Hey I guess you’re referring to CVT method? I don’t know what edge is, but compression is simply using your abdominal and related expulsion muscles to create upward pressure while restricting airflow similar to yelling underwater while trying to make zero bubbles… make sense?
Actually you can control the diaphragm. You can hold the diaphragm down and let the lungs slowly deflate. It is a bit uncomfortable, but you can do it.
Great explanation of compression! My understanding about open throat technique is that it’s all bout how you form and modify vowels with your tongue and soft palate though. You would still use proper support and compression with that technique I believe🤘☺️
Indeed, support is key in any instance - it's the foundation which is why everyone likes to say 'just sing from your diaphragm' (like it's just that easy - haha!)
hmm, I studied for years with a great opera singer who also sings rock. He always said fill the room with air. We need a lot of air. Unfortunately, I always get tired when I sing higher songs. Even on lower songs. Maybe that's my problem. I'll try it. Thank you!
I'd be interested in the opera singer that said that because I've recently gotten into learning more about opera singers and from what I've heard so far - they all talk about using as little air as possible to create a sound... In fact, there is a classical technique called "inalare" which you have the feeling of 'inhaling' the note (although not inhaling, you are releasing only a slight amount of air).... something to think about!
@@RockYourBestVocals Now I think he's got it wrong. I think that's a reason for my problems. But I can't say for sure until I've learned to sing with compression/less air. Sure, if you want information on the method, I can send you some. A lot of things are really good in this method and have opened my eyes. Should I send the things to your info mail address?
I explain this in my new course (being announced soon!) keep an eye out as it is short and sweet to the point (approx 1hr) focused on results that anyone can get (and after it you’ll have a good grasp of everything that will answer that question and more)
Hey Jim, thanks for all the explanation and guidance. It seems whenever I am trying to apply compression, it seems instead of my gut, it is my throat that is controlling the airflow and as a result my throat starts hurting within a few minutes.I am getting your concept but somehow not able to apply it practically, do you have any golden advice for me ?
Hi, I would suggest taking my "Singing Support Secrets" course that goes deeper on how to use compression (it's FREE for a limited time) you can access here: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support
Hi Jim! Would you say this is like another take at curbing? I'm teaching singing since a month and I've got a young fellar who's really into hard rock, so now I'm also really curious about learning these things. I know CVT pretty well and the compression sound, sounds like the hold in curbing, but then the sound is much different! But is it the same feeling? Cause then I know from where to explore!
Hey I’m not sure what that term means, because it sounds very specific to CVT which I never got into. I just like to explain things as simply as possible. Einstein said ‘if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it yourself’ 🤷🏼♂️
It's almost impossible to tell if you're doing something wrong, so I'd suggest booking a 15min consultation for FREE: calendly.com/rockyourbestvocals/gen-private-session-application-15-min-consul-clone?month=2023-11
The part that I cannot figure out is the transition from the croaky super compressed quiet sounds into using that for loud and powerful vocal parts. Also, when I try this I quickly feel like I need to cough- what am I doing incorrectly? I can make the sound at the end just fine but I have no idea how to transition from that to what it’s actually supposed to sound like when singing.
Hi! if you feel the need to cough, it's likely because you are pushing too much air through your vocal cords and irritating them. (that will cause damage over long periods of time, so if you feel that, stop!) Try holding back your air, and maybe consider 1:1 sessions with me to improve where I can show you things to do to achieve this.
@@RockYourBestVocals Thank you so much for the fast reply! After some trial and error I found if I focus more on the core I naturally constrict the air more and stop that problem. Thank you so much for the help! :) I'm still uncertain on transitioning from the squeaky sounds to powerful singing like you do at 11:17. I can make all the previous sounds in the video but that is where I am getting stuck!
Can I ask a question? What is the relationship between vocal compression and belting? I'm having a hard time visualizing how a singer like, say, Dorothy or Lzzy Hale sounds like they use some of both?
If you don't 'compress' when you are belting, you will push too much air and possibly damage your cords... compression is vital to healthy cords when belting. This is explained in detail in my Singing Supports Secrets course (free for a limited time) signup here: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support
Thank you! So when I do compression I can't go past E4-F4# and it sounds like old man constipated. lol. I'm only 45.:) In songs I usually sing lighter but when a line comes up to hit F4#/G4, I go into this compressed sound but it sounds ridiculously squeezed and unnatural, plus hard to articulate clearly that high. Is it supposed to get easier the more I practice and also able to go higher?
Hi Vlad, it's almost impossible to tell what you are actually doing and help without hearing you... I have a super cheap deal on wiseo ($20) where you can shoot me a video or audio file that I can hear what you are doing and feedback... It may be that you are just compressing too much, but again, almost impossible to give feedback without hearing you... Wiseo link is here if you want to try that: www.wisio.com/RockYourBestVocals Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Whenever i am trying to sing like that, i get nausea and dizzy just after a minute or so of singing... My neck veins pop out too and it kinda hurts. Probablyy my breath control sucks or i am doing something else wrong. Can anyone help me about what can get rid of all those problems??
@@RockYourBestVocals i am not sure what you mean, but i never had any vocal teacher and rarely i do vocal exercises.. im no singer, just a guitarist in a band which really needs that rock distorted voice. Im not sure what my next steps are towards singing and thats why i came to you.. have you got anything to suggest to me??
I hear all the bass potential you have in your speaking voice and I think that is key to sounding good too, I can barely have any low end anywhere in my voice, is there a way to add that or am i just stuck sounding like a kid at even though I'm 30? Like even my low notes around A2 are mostly made of fry.
Hi, and thank you for the comment/question! The grass is always greener! My voice was even higher before getting Covid in Dec 2019 (for some reason it's going deeper - perhaps age related also) If you listen to Sebastian Bach he has an extraordinarily high speaking voice. I believe the way to get good at lower register is to keep working on your support to generate enough 'pressure' for your cords to vibrate well enough when loose and "low"
Awesome that you're trying and getting it! As for your neck, as long as 'funny' doesn't hurt then I'm sure it's fine... it may feel different than you are used to and I'm sure that's fine as long as it doesn't HURT (pain is the enemy!)
Hello, thank you so much for this Video. I now understand exactly the technique which is used to do a fry sound. But my Problem is I sound like a compressed mini Duck. 😅 It is hard for me to find the cool Rocksound like you have in your voice. It is sad for me because I train this a long time.
compressed mini duck? hmmmm don't be so hard on yourself - you probably don't sound the way you think you do (we often are too critical of our voice - especially if it is unique, but unique is a GREAT thing! You can stand out and be heard a lot better than all the others!)
Hi Justin, holding back the air is just by not trying to push air out - it's challenging to explain in text, but as an exercise, you could try singing in front of a match or lighter and trying not to blow it out (caution: try that at your own risk!) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
An easy way to do it is to pretend you're pooping. You will notice a closing sensation in your throat. Those are your false folds closing. Now do the same movement but don't close fully and produce a sound while doing so. It should be compressed now. If you add more volume, your false fold distortion will kick in.
Open throat technique has nothing to do with pushing more air. It has to do with the resonant quality of the voice and not allowing the soft palate to drop too low to where you choke off your consonants. Open throat technique is a must for proper singing, and also must be paired with vocal compression (referring simply to the holding back of air) just like anything else we do.
Great points Justin! Nobody I ever heard talk about it explained it that way, but since this video and studying some Classical techniques I agree with you
I get that totally, because I've been there too... try thinking of starting it off with a loud forceful laugh and focus on the lower abs doing the work... and once you start off the note, just keep pushing from the lower abdominal and see if that works for you. There are several other things that I could suggest because different things work for different people.... but too much to list here
Well, I can hold the same note for the same length at the end of the video, clean and loud, so I guess I am compressing at some basic level. But when it comes to adding grit, "pushing more from the abdomen" etc, that doesn't seem to come together.

Einstein said ‘if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it yourself’ 🤷🏼♂️
this guy is so damn good
can you do steven tyler
Cool... Thanksssss
Welcome 😊 Glad you liked it and thanks for watching and leaving a comment - much appreciated!
Hello, if i fell neck tension (my throat is in great condition) do i do something wrong?
@@RockYourBestVocals thanks so much!!!
Helpful and also entertained your clip. 😂
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 😊🙏🏽
As you’ve toured with Cher - what do you think of her voice? She’s so underrated imo
We only did the one support slot with her in Belfast SSE arena 2019... thought she was phenomenal and SUCH an incredibly nice and inspiring person - all the years she's done this, and not jaded in the slightest! Love her!
@@RockYourBestVocals I adore Belfast. Wish we went more. She seems so honest and interesting. Can’t wait to hear her 2 new albums.
Is it okay to feel a little bit of itch/scratch on the throat in the beginning? Or am I doing it wrong
You're likely pushing too much air, and my new FREE course will help you with that - check it out below and share with as many people as you can to spread the love: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support
Brother here sounds like Corey Tailor
Now that I’m watching this ima have to assume most metal/rock singers use compression wrong for years before anyone tells them
What does it mean if my throat feels scratchy after trying this out?I think i'm doing something wrong even though it sounds perfect
Scratchy or irritated throat means your true cords are being used, and feeling irritated as a result. This must be avoided to prevent damage.
Most rock vocal coach talk out their ass lol but Jim actually knows what he's on about
Wow! Thank you for that huge compliment, really appreciate your support! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!! 🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Whenever i am trying to sing like that, i get nausea and dizzy just after a minute or so of singing... My neck veins pop out too and it kinda hurts. Probablyy my breath control sucks or i am doing something else wrong. Can anyone help me about what can get rid of all those problems??
Most vocal issues come back to support. How much/often do you dedicate to strengthening your support?
First time I’m trying it. Kinda of got it I think. Is my neck supposed to feel a bit funny afterwards or am I doing something wrong? 😅
Mark hamill sings??
The name is jim chandler!
Are you holding back air with your abdominal muscles or with your false folds? Or is it a little of both?
"I GOT ANOTHER CONFE-"
I find myself starting off correctly, but then unconsciously, the sound starts to come from my throat. Help?
OMG I GOT IT...one time...then lost it 😂
that means you can get it AGAIN... don't quit!
Nobody I ever heard talk about it explained it that way, but since this video and studying some Classical techniques I agree with you
I understand well english but i dont really understand this explanation 😂 my brain gets slow when i read this, i wish i could understand it better
@@lMagicKaito Lowered larynx= open throat.
High airflow/pushing more air= lack of compression but with strong exhale force.
I do inhale, but my voice just doesn't change.
12:10 when you stub your toe on the couch
When I try to do this, I always end up creating the sound with the throat instead of the diaphragm.
