No matter what I do, i can't get your mic/gear page to display. Turned off all anti-virus, ads, vpn...nothing's coming up. Don't worry about solving my problem though; I was just checking it because I was curious; I live in Portugal anyway. I'm just mentioning it because I know it's part of your income, and you didn't perhaps didn't notice it.

it is nice to see that there are videos with a complete explanation in contrast with these videos who promise to explain something and instead show how they sing and finally don't explain anything or point you to their overpriced lesson.. This is the best explanation I found so far. Thanks for providing us with these videos! Very to the point and very clear

Thanks very much! That's my goal, to provide tutorials that have good, practical tips that people can actually USE. It is disheartening to see tutorials with only singing and little to no information on HOW they are singing. One of the "red flags" of a vocal coach who might not be that fantastic is a lack of specific, practical information on HOW to execute or work on specific techniques. I'm going to be making a video on this soon, tips for finding a good vocal instructor. This is also why I began with tutorials and have only a few singing examples on the actual Voicehacks channel, because you can Google me if you want to see me sing with bands/scream etc. and it's time to give everyone some information and real useful stuff for a change. Thanks much and I've got more coming - things are going up to the next level in 2017! \m/

Thanks, subscribed! I'm a men who is also looking for a light rasp in the lower range. This is the mid-range and the higher range. Is this with the same technique? I can do it a bit with the trick of starting with a humming sound that goes over in a raspy humming that you can also convert in a scream. It sometimes works in a higher range, but the lower is with to much tension. Also my singing teacher says I have to much tension in my voice. ut it's much less the last year(s). Thank you very much once again.

Hmmm.. Do you really find "imagine noise in your mouth and it will come naturally" informative? Like.. I need to contract muscles to do it, mental image won't do it for me. If i didn't learn to engage false cords beforehand, i'd have had no idea how to do it

I can sing well cleanly, but have been getting into heavier stuff and have been struggling to sing with grit without hurting myself. In the past month or so I've watched a bunch of videos, and by far this was the most helpful. Your explanation of visualizing singing up and over with the graph helped immediately and over the course of the day I got it and can now sing with high distortion without any pain! You're the best! Thanks!

I honestly can't believe that this worked, holy macarony. For years I've been madly trying to get an alternative to my plain voice, which is nice for a lot of stuff but just kills the mood for a lot of songs still. This is sincerely an amazing revelation o.o I'm gonna practice the heck out of this now :D Thank you so much for making this video 4 years back!

I've been singing with grit for about 3 years now. It's sorta a mix between Lemmy and Tom Waits. I never gave much thought on how I did it. I taught myself to growl and scream then worked backwards from there to teach myself that amazing, rich gritty texture I can now use in my voice. This is a great video in explaining how it works!

It just happens to be handy for those of us not wanting to vecome pros but just sound better in the shower or something. But if you want to be a whole ass vocalist, you will need a vocal coach, and they will absolutely need money, its a job.

The imagery did not work for me. What did was projecting the sound a bit upwards toward the anterior roof of my mouth instead of straight as suggested by the diagram. One other way of finding it is projecting the sound forward then tilting my head downwards while keeping the sound projected parallel to the ground.

You're not alone! It doesn't just magically work for many people, and I think that learning from videos isn't super realistic for most people. Try one of the heavier sounds, I recommend "false Cord screams", I have videos on those and see if that can get the ball rolling then come back to this one.

Am I doing this right? I can create the clean, belting sound confidently without any pain, and I can create a gritty version that sounds great but feels like continual repetition would hurt. The placement in my throat feels lower than you were describing, but I feel a lot of compression and support in my core/diaphragm which seems to really project the sound. Attempting this technique with a higher placement activates my head voice, my voice crackles, doesn't feel as powerful and controlled, but isn't painful at all. I'll keep practicing with this video and take a look at the others too. Thanks for this regardless! This is a really succinct explanation.

whoa-- I was singing in the mid range for years and have been goin back and forth between your video and a metal chica named Adrrienne and I think i made more progress tonight than in years... Ive always had that low to mid Cornell style voice but could never cut it in the higher spectrum. I do notice a little bit of strain but thats prob because i put in 3 hours today messin around. The head voice has really intimidated me because i always felt like i could do it but sounded too feminine. Ive been just imitating what you do via observation and it just clicked. I feel like a dunz, LOL-- Thanks! Totally subscribing!

He's had some problems with his voice and even surgery though, so some of it could come from that when he's just pushing it a little.

EXACTLY WHY IM WATCHING THIS. lol I'm literally listening to Avenged Sevenfold and trying to sound like him. I thought I was doing it until I recorded myself 😑😑😑 I'm horrible. So I said. "Fuck it! I'm watching videos on this shit"😂😂

Muhammad Alvien He has damaged vocal cords tho, that’s how he gets that sound.

I can make a gritty sound without throat tightness (i think), but the uvula or whatever vibrating makes me want to cough. Also it seems to increase phlegm production.

Yop Glo How long did it take? I have an audition for a band at the end of the month and they asked me to sing some Nirvana songs. -_-"

@@t0rschlusspan1k I'M SO SORRY! I never saw your comment. I'm actually still working on it, but it's getting better. It takes so much practice.

So I'm trying to imagine a little ball of white noise or paper, but whem i go to sing it doesn't make that grit sound? Would you happen to know what would help achieve that?

  • @emmywillow6599
    @emmywillow6599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

so i’m able to add the grit, but the grit feels like it hurts my throat. My vocal cords feel totally fine, but it’s feels like i have a sore throat in the space above my vocal folds. any reason why this is happening.

I have to concentrate harder to NOT have grit. It doesn't hurt, it just happens. I will say, if I try to get lower it gets harder, but when I'm singing Def Leppard, for example... It's extremely natural and easy. I've also been told I sound the best singing in Joe Elliott's range..... 80s Elliott.

Can you apply this exact technique in head voice too? Im trying to develope a bit of Grit or rasp to my high notes to not sound so thin and clean.

  • @isolatedmortalityband5718

The Metallica grit is what I'm going for; Justice era vocals. Hopefully this is what I need. I'll look your other videos up tomorrow.

I had my tonsils and other glands removed as a child. Does this make it harder to dirty up the sound?

This almost immediately helped me. I was able to sing along to some songs like Hard Feelings by Palisades and Collide by Normandie without ANY strain, and I could sing all of it (I was never able to sing those songs fully or even keep up for long before this)
