Yes. Currently he knows Before, Now, Soon (within15 minutes), Later (more then 15 minutes), Morning, Afternoon, and Evening. His next time reference will be After and probably get that in his next round of buttons.

@@PoesRaven1984My son has a cat that was found as a 7 or 8 week old kitten in a bank parking lot in the shopping district in the middle of a rainy night. There are no residences there, so it must have been a litter dump. Maybe he was the last in the litter. He was crying so loudly that the guy heard him over the sound of his car engine and the rain when he stopped at the ATM after work. He couldn't take the kitten home, so he asked for help, and my son answered the 2AM call. I ended up fostering him for the first months. Poor little baby was terrified to fall asleep, even in my arms. I could tell he was exhausted, but he couldn't stop crying. After a few days and nights of this, I subconsciously went into Mama and Grandma Mode, and just like with my own babies and grandbabies, I started singing Brahms Lullaby. The kitten's reaction was so cute! He stopped in the middle of a cry and stared at me in awe. Then he put his paw on my bottom lip, pulled my mouth open, and stuck his head inside! I guess he was trying to see what was making that sound 😹 One of the strangest experiences of my life. And after that, I had to sing to him so he could sleep. He would come to me to pick him up, then he would tap my mouth until I began to sing, then he would curl up in my arms. And I couldn't move until his nap was over. It was fun to watch Todd the Mighty Hunter capture and retrieve his prey! Full recovery. But yes, I am sure Todd was reflecting what happened and saying he was safe now. Cats in the wild, on their own, have to figure out dangers and how to avoid them, so a memory of a big scare is certainly part of their makeup. He was in danger, unable to get out of it on his own and you rescued him. This was his way, probably, to say: Dad keep an eye on me and keep me safe, thanks!
I believe that Todd was reflecting on that event in much the same way he was giving you updates on his "head ouch" awhile ago when his mouth was giving him pain. He is a very sensitive boy and wanted to make sure that you know how grateful he is and that he loves you. Belly rubs for sweet Todd.
While it might not be possible to know for sure what Todd meant, it does seem like he was thanking you again, based on the buttons he pushed. Its so cute the way he plays fetch with the jingle ball, taking a little break there to bat it around before bringing it back that one time. And Glamour just passing through, and making sure to let you know it. Don't touch, just look. "Meow!" Such a princess! LOL
It’s so wonderful that Todd is able to communicate with you with this board. There is another channel I subscribe to that her cat uses one to. Cats are a lot smarter than most people think they are. They are very intelligent my brother had a cat that I thought it all kinds of tricks. I had a cat once she understood what I was telling her like brush and she would run and sit by her brush and I would brush her for an hour or more she loved to be brushed all over and I mean all over. When I would say it’s bedtime she would go to her room and go to bed but sometimes she would kind of talk back to me on her way to bed like some children do when they don’t want to go to bed but she would go. On those nights when I was in bed she would make a bunch of noise letting me know she wasn’t happy about going to bed but eventually she would fall asleep. I sure do miss her she was my rock and best friend. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about her. She was always there for me especially in the worst times she knew something was wrong and she always would comfort me.
Between this and how he reacted after the second jingle ball got broken, Todd has shown us his amazing memory as well as his ability to feel emotions! Mind blowing how much they really understand and feel, just not all people pay attention.

Agreed. I have also wondered if it like when we learn a foreign language. Before we learn it well enough to start thinking in it we have to stop and think of the word and translate it. I wondered if that is why they say it is not uncommon for cats to take up to 30 seconds between button pushes.
Your bond with Todd is truly something special, and it's so wonderful to watch. Todd was absolutely thanking you for helping him. It actually made me shed a tear. 🥰
I couldn't watch your close call. My dog is sick, ate something unknown and gave himself gastritis. He's a senior dog. Vet bill so far is moderate compared to his pain and misery/nausea. Our kitties and pups are so precious and they can't protect themselves from so many hazards. I have no doubt that Todd is thanking you. I don't know if all cats would know that you helped him, though. Maybe some would just think of the whole experience as one awful time and not be aware that the human didn't cause it, but ended it. Todd has the best Dad and Todd knows it too. I think you’re right to believe he is thanking and wanting you to stop it happening again by brushing him 😻
The love Todd has for you is all-consuming, and you have made a lifelong commitment to each other to always be there for one another. There is nothing in this sometimes difficult world that is more perfect. 🌈💞💖
Todd definitely was remembering how much he feels love you for the day before! I'm so glad he can tell you directly. And I love to see Todd happy with his Jingle Ball. 🔔
Wow! Todd was definitely thanking you again. He has an amazing concept of time, and looked so reflective before pushing Before and Love You. I also love to watch him play Jingle Ball - he looks so proud when he brings it back.
"LOVE YOU LOVE YOU BRUSH" - your interpretation is definitely correct. "BEFORE LOVE YOU" - harder to say for sure, but it's definitely a good and possible interpretation.
I agree the second one is harder but Todd is always so deliberate and careful with his button pushes. Since that was his first button push of the day I'm not sure what he was talking about by before then Love You other than the events from the previous evening.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Your point that this was the first button of the day, back in the place where it happened is very persuasive that Todd was remembering his close call and your rescue.
I think the love you was definitely a thank you. I'm not sure he can reason that brushing would prevent the problem, though. It could also be a comfort request.
Todd sure is smart! He was definitely re-thanking you. So sweet. He really loves Jingle Ball play. I hope more can be found. Does he use his buttons only when you are in the same room? Does his talking ever get to be to much? 🤣 You have three very different kitties. You really lucked out with Todd...not to say Glamour and Paulie aren't great cats, also, but Todd is extra special, imo. 😎👍👏❤
Yes, he only talks when I am in the room with the exception of recently when I stepped on an broke a true Jingle Ball in front of him. It upset him and then when he was alone upstairs he went to his board and said "Ouch" then very gently tapped Jingle Ball but not hard enough to activate it. It was almost like a whisper. He did this all with the saddest look on his face.
Do you have a "thank you" button? If not, maybe you should include one. 🤩🙏. Todd should be thanking you every time you get him what he asks for. I was watching another person with a dog and they included a button "bruh" and the dog finally used it at the correct time. 🤣🤣🤣 So amazing that we thought these animals were not able to communicate or did not understand to the level they are capable of.
In the same way that "mad" covers a lot of different negative expressions, "love you" is often used as a kind of thank you by many button using pets. It can be hard to model certain kinds of nuances. If it were my choice, I would leave it at "love you" and add more useful words that are easy to model. 🙂
1:32 I have to agree, Todd is pretty smart, if I hadn’t watched Todd for so long, I might say, it’s a stretch, but this is Todd we are talking about here. He absolutely wants to have the loose hair brushed away. He is so handsome. 2:31 he is so thoughtful. 4:03 he has the cutest pantaloons!!! My Lolly girl is long haired black and white, so maybe that’s why I think his little strut is so precious!
Weird...I just finished watching a 9/11 video, the horrifying aftermath of hate, and now I am experiencing the amazing love between a "father" and his cat! If only mankind could learn.....
Good kitteh! I believe cats are a lot smarter than we know. I'm older and have a bone marrow condition. My dog detected it before I even got the diagnosis. My cat, Misu, appears to know, too. We recently adopted two kittens for my granddaughter. One of them, an orange tabby we call Kevin, is a frisky, playful puss! The other is solid black and as mellow as the day is long. This morning, I had some difficulties moving around. My back is an issue due to the chemo!. Misu watched me trying to stand and start walking. Since then, she has gone after Kevin every time he gets near me! She doesn't usually do that. Kevin isn't doing anything wrong, but she is definitely trying to 'keep him in line!'
I agree, Todd was definitely thanking you for saving his life. Curious, I have noticed on several channels that households with several cats or dogs, only one animal using the buttons. Did any of the other cats ever show an interest in learning to use the buttons?
I have noticed that as well. Neither Glamor nor Paulie have ever shown an interest in learning the buttons. I don't think it is that surprising though, we are asking them if they want to learn a foreign language, I think we would have the same result with groups of people.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks I have two cats and I think I could guess which one would take to using the buttons. My boy is laid back and just goes with the flow but my girl is always trying to let me know what she wants. I really think she would be a good candidate to learn the buttons. I am considering ordering the starter pack just to see how it goes with her, but I don't want to be prejudice and prejudge how either of them will react. I am hoping it will at the least give them some stimulation as they are keep indoors and I fell so bad for them sometimes.
I watched a video about cat colours on TH-cam in recent months and apparently tuxedos are meant to be the brains of the species! I had a boy when I was a younger woman and he amazed me at how clever and chatty he was. I bet he would have been great at the buttons too! I've only just come across your channel and Todd is adorable. I think you've interpreted everything correctly in all your videos. It's clear that he loves you x
Welcome and I'm so glad you are here! Thank you for the kind words. Todd and I have a truly special bond and have ever since we met. I went to the shelter to meet my mom and help her find a cat. When I walked into Todd's room he almost immediately ran to me and demanded I pick him up and cuddle him. I did and commented this might be a good one for mom as he was friendly and liked to be help. I put him down to check out another kitten and Todd ran back insisting I hold him again. I picked him up and gave him to my wife to hold so I could look at other kittens. He let her hold him for just a minute then was struggling to get back to me. He would let anyone hold him but me and I couldn't put him down. The shelter lady came in and asked how we were doing and I commented on Todd and what he was doing. She said he was a nice cat but to her knowledge he's never behaved like that before. I looked at my wife and said I think I've been adopted and she agreed. He has been right by my side ever since.
Now knowing a little over Todd, and his preplanning the next day, he ight remeber what created an upset some time ago. as a sidenote, Kibble made to a soup with added hot water seem to become an internet cat fad ;-) Maybe Todd would like to try Cat-soup too?
I agree with your assessment. He doesn't have a thank you button. Saying I love you is probably appreciation. And yes, he would liked to be brushed so he doesn't choke again. I'm not sure what to do with Before Love You. You could be right about it. We do know Todd thinks about the past from other stuff he's said. To me it's too unclear to pick a meaning, though.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks And as I said initially, you may be right. It didn't seem to be a mistake. I think at one point one of the talking cats I watch said something like "Before Love You" to indicate he was angry when his mad button wasn't working. But that doesn't fit this context as Todd didn't seem upset about anything. For me, this one is just unclear at this time. Answer cloudy. Try again later. ;)
I am asking her to learn a foreign language. It is no different than asking people, I'll teach you a foreign language if you want to put the work in and learn it. Most will say no.
All by modeling. I Would tell Todd I love you whenever I knew he was feeling extremely happy and safe. Like Cuddling, brushing, one on one time etc. I say it with different activities but always the same emotion so he will associate it with the emotion not the activity. Before was the same way. He would ask for Jingle Ball and we would play then he would ask for Brush and I would press Before Jingle Ball, Now Brush then brush him. I hope this helps.
You know how you've been using sequential laters for the number of days away. I think he's picking up multipliers as a way of expressing more of a thing. The double press was deliberate. How is the tail button going? I'm waiting to see "tail, mad" for the crazy tail chasing mood
It is very hard to say if cats understand the concept of a 'thank you'. Todd has showed us before that cats do think old happenings several days in a row. It is a reference sure, but is it 'thank God', 'it was good' or just mere 'I love you for being here before or I would have died' which can be sort of a thank you, I guess.
This might be what a psychologist might Diagnose as "apophenia." (But I'm pretty sure Todd thinks 'kinda Highly of his Cat Dad.' Although he seems endlessly willing to share you with Glamour, a creature he Also holds in the very Highest Regard.) -- If you care to think Back to Heinlein's "Have Space Suit, Will Travel, you might (possibly) be "making too much soup, with one oyster."
Hmmm. Is that what "they Mean" when they Say, "hoist by his own petard?" @@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks has Full Access to all of the Data; and I don't.
that's what i was thinking just after he pressed it. i don't remember if i picked up on it last time. he is one smart cookie. he is one of those special kitties. wow, that left an impression on him. he was really upset about the choking. i think he's asking for more playtime to help him calm down still. choking is scary, especially for a helpless little creature. he needs you near him to be able to play & feel safe again. that's my opinion. & i think he may like that color combo of the jingle ball is his ability to see those easily. if someone already pointed that out, i agree completely. you are a good papa.
He was definitely thanking you, but also processing it. He was thinking about his mortality, I think. He also wanted reassurance and comfort, just like somebody who nearly had a horrific car accident would come home and want hugs from their spouse.
Yes, a lot of his requests have shifted to comfort things like cuddles and belly rubs
I think there is something to that. He wasn't very enthusiastic about Jingle Ball and just wanted to lay close to Dad.
Cool that he knows how/when to reference time…’before’.
Yes. Currently he knows Before, Now, Soon (within15 minutes), Later (more then 15 minutes), Morning, Afternoon, and Evening. His next time reference will be After and probably get that in his next round of buttons.

I try my best not to do that but the things he does just amaze me.
I think the love you was definitely a thank you. I'm not sure he can reason that brushing would prevent the problem, though. It could also be a comfort request.
Possibly, but he has seen me remove small mats in the past from his fur with a brush
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Awww, I remember that. Thanks!
I think choking really upset Todd and he was telling you about that
I know it did. When I saw him there was a look of sheer terror in his eyes
Fantastic work,
Many thanks!
That may be a button he gets down the road. There are other words I think he needs to know first.
In the same way that "mad" covers a lot of different negative expressions, "love you" is often used as a kind of thank you by many button using pets. It can be hard to model certain kinds of nuances. If it were my choice, I would leave it at "love you" and add more useful words that are easy to model. 🙂
I couldn’t bring myself to watch the other video, but I’m so glad Todd is okay. Maybe you need to install a thank you button.
😊
1:32 I have to agree, Todd is pretty smart, if I hadn’t watched Todd for so long, I might say, it’s a stretch, but this is Todd we are talking about here. He absolutely wants to have the loose hair brushed away. He is so handsome.
2:31 he is so thoughtful.
4:03 he has the cutest pantaloons!!! My Lolly girl is long haired black and white, so maybe that’s why I think his little strut is so precious!
Thank you 😊
Aww, Todd was thinking how to talk you about what happened yesterday 😻 he's so clever and brilliant 🥰
Thank you, I think he is, too
Todd is really so cute! ❤
Thank you 😊
Weird...I just finished watching a 9/11 video, the horrifying aftermath of hate, and now I am experiencing the amazing love between a "father" and his cat!
They know and try to take care of us the best they can. Sending good thoughts and prayers for your condition.
I’m pretty sure that he was thanking you and reiterating his love. Is jingleball pink and blue or red and blue?
A true Jingle Ball that is acceptable is hot pink and blue.
I think Todd is smarter than many Homo sapiens 😸
😊
Certainly more appreciative . 😃
Now knowing a little over Todd, and his preplanning the next day, he ight remeber what created an upset some time ago.
as a sidenote, Kibble made to a soup with added hot water seem to become an internet cat fad ;-)
Maybe Todd would like to try Cat-soup too?
I gave that to him after his oral surgery, he wasn't a big fan. It may have been he was hurting to much. I could try it again and see
Glamour is not snubbing you, she just has Cat business to do elsewhere. You know they have their own agendas.
I just can't think of what the Before would mean. He is always very careful with the words he chooses.
Try again later. ;)
@@jenniferhanses Fair enough. Before Todd had his Mad button he came up with Happy No when he was mad
@@gatroy3866 It probably was Todd who did it in the first place. He's such a smart boy.
Why do you think Glamor wants nothing to do with the buttons?
I am asking her to learn a foreign language. It is no different than asking people, I'll teach you a foreign language if you want to put the work in and learn it. Most will say no.
Did I see Paulie 🥰
Yes I believe he was in there for a minute in the background
How do you have the buttons configured? By verbs and nouns? Prepositions? Sorry, my SLP skills kicking in.
The colors are more for me to organize them, but here is the layout I based Todd's board on with a few tweaks tinypic.host/image/cUkSc
How did you teach "Love You"? And, even more mysterious to me, how did you teach "Before"?
Todd does know and use multiple button presses to express an increase in Time, Want/Need, and emotion.
😊
Is he limping on his right front leg?
No, Todd has a chronic medical condition which can effect his balance. At times you may see this, appear wobbly, trip, or even fall over when running.
I’m sorry but I had to stop watching, that awful noise was giving me a headache. What was that noise, it sounded like you had a washing machine going!
Can you give me a time stamp of when you are hearing the noise?
This might be what a psychologist might Diagnose as "apophenia." (But I'm pretty sure Todd thinks 'kinda Highly of his Cat Dad.' Although he seems endlessly willing to share you with Glamour, a creature he Also holds in the very Highest Regard.) -- If you care to think Back to Heinlein's "Have Space Suit, Will Travel, you might (possibly) be "making too much soup, with one oyster."
It's possible, but you are only seeing a few minutes of an entire day.
Aww, thank you so much 😊
