Only nothing new since the pandemic. If you’ve been buying cars for 20+ years this is an absolutely mind numbing time to be buying a car. The thought that any car should be sold over sticker is egregious. The dealership model is broken and should be reexamined. There are too many laws in place for their protection instead of the consumer.

When I was car shopping last year, I was more surprised how much more I knew about every car on a lot then some actual sales associates. If they knew nothing about something, I would 100% tell them to get me someone else who knew about the car.

That’s happened to me before as well, not that I know that much but just shocking things they didn’t know. I still don’t trust a dealership. I know a guy that is a salesperson for Chevrolet and he was bragging a few weeks ago about how they sold a Chevrolet Tahoe at $15,000 over msrp, and it was like he was proud of it. He proceeded to tell me how that was the day we are living in. I just shook my head and let him know how I’d never fall for such a deal!!!!!

Part of that is because of the high turnover because the old dogs can't handle the new market and the new people can't get the hang of it before starving. Ive been selling cars for about 8 months and I can tell you everything about every Honda. Being polite goes a long way though.

Had a same kind of experience at a Hyundai dealership. Here in my country Hyundai sells only a handful of models. But this young bloke knew only the specs of the Ioniq 5 you can find in the brochure. He really didn’t know or even lied about real life performance. Obviously he didn’t watch TeslaBjörn and others or seen any other 3rd part information. When talking about the lease price it became evident that he didn’t want me to get the car so to speak. Confronting the salesperson with a huge difference with a former offer he made. Couldn’t explain the 160 euros price difference per month over 5 years. He promised to investigate but never called back. In the end I am going to lease the car from a lease company almost 17 percent cheaper then by Hyundai itself! There was no salesperson involved. Just filled in a web form so to speak. I guess Tesla led the way. With al the info on the web and a test drive, it’s all you need so you can decide to get a new car. And I got the impression that it is going pretty good in the car business. They are making enough money and this dealership and another by the way didn’t need my money at all?! But the total sum of this experience will be if the leasing experience will be OK that I won’t ever need a dealer again!

Here in California, I was able to negotiate 3-4% off MSRP for a Subaru Forester back in February and recently a Legacy that we’re picking up tomorrow. No dealer add ons, 2 year Subaru maintenance plan included, and both deals were made over the phone/email before going in to buy the car or reserve it in the case of the Legacy. Being patient is key and being fortunate to live in the middle of CA and using all of the Subaru dealerships from SF to LA to find the best deal.

I encountered a gentleman on a car buying website some 12 years ago who utilized a similar method. I am currently in the process of purchasing a 2022 Toyota Rav4 XLE. This week I will send an email from a GMail account that I created just for this purchase. I am thankful for the additional info that I have accumulated through your TH-cam videos. I too have a spreadsheet that contains the names of 50 dealerships who I will be contacting. Regrettably, new car inventory is just about nil, as pre-orders are backed up, which will more than likely result in a multi-month wait for a delivery date. Again, much thanks for all you do.

in the process of dealing with the extra charges..the dealership isn't budging on the price at all so I am walking away. not paying 40,000 for a Honda Accord. msrp was $34,000 with a $3995. charge because of them having a hard time getting stock I just decided to walk away. I've never paid msrp let alone the extra charge.. I will either chose a different type of car or find a different dealership that is willing to negotiate with me. the new car is a want not a need.

An important take away here is you should be ready to buy from dealers located far away from your location. I think most people give in to the ridiculous mark up because of the convenience. A Ford dealership 2 miles away from me wont even give me an otd price for a factory order unless I order and sign the order on the spot. I took my business to a dealership 3 hrs away from where I live.

I wish this buyer all the best, good on him for putting in the time and getting a price he was happy with. As others have mentioned, I’d be very weary of a Kia or Hyundai EV. I bought a new 2017 Kia Sedona, and I’ve used the extend warranty to the tune of $6000 so far. New head assembly, new cvt valve etc. Maybe the weren’t pushing the extended warranty for a reason… If they can’t make reliable gas cars, which they have experience with, how are they going to build EVs?

There are supply chain disruptions in all business segments which include “allocations” (rationing). I’m going to guess that dealers who sell a lot of cars get a larger allocation. The dealership that are price gouging are driving their volumes down and as a result their monthly allocation is being reallocated to dealers who sell more.

They're not charging over MSRP. However, they're not accepting out of area customers. So even though they're not charging above MSRP, if you live in.....say...Illinois, then you're not getting ANY car from them. Not new, not used.
Exceptions are made for people who are returning customers, but that's it. So finding a dealer that doesn't charge above MSRP doesn't mean they're going to take care of YOU if you're traveling from far away.

Businesses can deny someone service for pretty much any reason outside of a protected class. Location is not a protected class.
But the real reason is that due to the fact that they are not charging above MSRP, they would get a whole lot of people coming up from Illinois trying to buy under MSRP as well as for a lower state sales tax.
They don't want their waitlist overburdened with non-locals - who will then make the wait longer for those of us who ARE local. All for customers who are coming ONCE because the dealership has ethics and probably won't return again once the bubble has burst and they can get fair prices once again back at home. I very much support dealerships who take this stance. That keeps wait times shorter for their repeat customers or their new customers who are local and are more likely to remain loyal to them - like me.
My car is ALREADY taking 6 months as it is. Imagine if all the people from Illinois went and placed orders. The wait would probably be 9 months to a year....for a basic ass Rav4.

I live in Hawaii. Dealer mark ups are insane! Some of the mark up’s are close to 35k on a 45k vehicle. Big trucks have crazy mark ups as well, 100k for a 70k truck & there is virtually no inventory so you have to order it. I buy all my vehicles from the states, negotiate the deal over the phone, fly there, drive it to the port & ship it home. I search who the biggest dealerships are by volume and stay away from the dealers near the coastline.& big port cities. I call and tell them point blank what I’m willing to pay. I tell them I have lots of friends who will follow suit if we can make a deal. Sports cars are much cheaper in Idaho during the winter months. I make it a vacation/adventure and go skiing after I purchase my vehicle killing two birds with one stone.
