Every Spring my mom would have yellow daffodills and purple irises in beautiful bloom on a bank overlooking her garden.
I'm surprised you didn't put protection around the bulbs. I don't have gophers, but do have squirrels & rabbits. I build a chicken wire box & put the bulbs inside that. so far seems to work ok. Typed this, and then you said gophers don't like the bulbs you're planting. oops lol

I planted tulips in pots a few years ago and a squirrel pulled out every single one, took a bite, and cast it to the side. This year I planted a lot of tulip bulbs and covered it with chicken wire. So far, it’s not even winter and the squirrel has managed to get three out from under the wire. Pests are the biggest nuisance.
10:30, auger safety 101 is very nice. A lotta people don't know how crazy torque can get, especially if you hit a rock.

Great tip about the handle on the drill, I am surprised I didn't snap my wrist using a drill on a high power setting and the auger...when it hit a brick 😳 I always turn the power down now.

I have calla lily mom planted 60 yrs ago I’ve never divided because I’m a afraid of ruining them. Mom also forced paper whites in a bowl on the kitchen table for winter. Love paper whites, allium, Gladiolas, iris, hyacinth, anemone, ranunculus…and then there are peonies. I’m in zone 9. I had a friend who tried using ice cubes after planting. I should see how that’s going. I love peonies.

Use a large tupperware container with layers of bulbs and newspaper in fridge.
I’m in nor cal (Bay Area, zone 9b) my tulips grow and flower every year …I had put them in fridge only the first time….but like you said the next time it flowers it’s stem
Is not as long as the stem I got first but still has decent stem length and I love the pop of color they give to my garden

You can also set the drill to a tension that goes through the soil but if you hot a root or rock then the drill will hit the ratchet setting and it will stop the auger from moving and that will save your wrists
You can put your bulbs in a ball jar with a moist paper towel. Screw the lid down tightly. They won't dry out nor will they be affected by your fruits.
Use the huge container from pretzels from Costco to hold more than just a few bulb. Has a plastic tight lid.
I use them for bird and chicken feed too.

I am 9, Central Cal-Atascadero. Freeze temps kill tender(spider plants). DEER HERE. SO DAFFODILS are it on slightly sloped area accessible to chicken coop which needs rehab. Also Iris and lavender and salvia. Carpenter help for coop!Tulips in raised bed in back yard. I want to plant them outside of that bed-use it for veggies. Love your fertilizer tips. It’s only an acre but LOTS of planting possibilities and we are not completely unpacked!!

Same here, but let's talk rabbits. Lots of sources claim various bulbs are rabbit proof/resistant, like iris. It's not their first choice but when it gets dry they will eat iris plants to a stub. Also all my muscari. They go for the leaves and stalk. It all depends on population level and food availability. For many years the rabbits weren't bad but when some of their predators decreased they spiked and come right up to my patio now.
My favorite is the snowdrop. They bloom in February/March here in western Oklahoma.

My favorite is freesia and I have planted a couple hundred and about a hundred dwarf Dutch iris this fall in zone 9b.

Back when I had room in a refrigerator and space in the garden, I would put my tulips in potting soil in a bag in the fridge to keep them from drying out while I vernalized them. My thinking was that if I were in a colder climate they would be in soil anyway, so why not start them in soil to begin with. It worked for me. Regarding alliums and gophers, I finally got some nice bulbs forming on some red onions last year when a gopher came along and methodically (avoiding trapping) took out the whole row one at a time right down his tunnel, roots, bulbs, and leaves. First day he took one, second day he took two, and third day the remaining 7. They haven't touched the daffodil or other flower bulbs (don't have tulips).

I planted lots of gladiolus which was my Mother’s favorite. Also have Crocus, Dutch Iris and tulips in Zone 8b!
Yes! Gophers don't really like daffodils so you are safe there. They do make baskets specifically for planting bulbs in to protect them. My favorite bulbs are the bulb iris as they bloom before crocus, and the double daffodils. They look like carnations . Looking forward to seeing your spring garden!!!

It’s very cold here in Ireland, and this time of year days are dark because of all the chemtrails, even in summertime we are lucky to get stuff growing.
Tomatoes never got going this year, sweetcorn never grew fully. Cucumbers did very well.
I definitely grew way too many cabbage and was sorry then as I don’t eat cabbage in summer lollll
Gave away most of it, then I wasn’t paying attention and something had a field day eating it.

Oh, no! 🤔😳 What about hyacinths?! My favorite!! 🤩😍Getting ready to plant in my mild winter (Verde Valley) Arizona. They've been in my very cool garage (45 degree nights) We just got our killing frost.
If you've got really tough clay soil, an auger might not work. A hand shovel with serrated edges is your friend. If that's the case, don't put just clay back in the hole. Most of the hole should be filled with compost or the bulbs will rot. If you have leaves, throw those in too.
Just put 50 tulips in the ground, ready for spring.
Brian have you tried vole stakes yet to get rid of the gophers? They are advertised as being good for that purpose.

Another great informative vlog!! Question regarding gases omitted by veggies in the refrigerator. Do the gases contaminate the entire fridge or just the veggie crisper bin?
I live in southern BC, Canada and don't have to dig up fall bulbs at the end of their blossoming season. The issue we have is deer like to eat the foliage of tulips. Don't seem to bother daffodils tho.,
I heard daffodils are toxic! Smart deer!
Sorry to tell you this Brian, but rats ate some of my Tulip bulbs out of pots, I do have a real rat problem because I live in a Sub Tropical rain forest. Love you videos, Cheers, Muffy from Oz (Australia)
Refrigerator crisper drawers are by design made to keep vegetables moist and crisp. You should make sure the drawers are properly installed and you should set the adjustment slide to the side that looks like a leaf which indicates keeping maximum moisture for green leafy vegetables. Hope that helps.
I dont have crisper drawers in the garage fridge though 🤷♂️

I tried tulips once. Was a lot of work (chilling in fall, digging up in spring) and only got so-so flowers. My favorite bulbs are daffodils! I got several varieties I've put in this year.
I noticed your link to the rock phosphate was a 0-3-0 version but there was also a 0-12-0. Wouldn't the 0-12-0 be better for providing several years of fertilizer?

Question:. What is the temp needed for coldness. If in the refrigerator then they wouldn't freeze. We are zone 9 but never get hot, some frosts but not hard freeze. Winters are very wet and hang in the 40's. Would bulbs be perrinial here?
They need to be down in the thirties for extended periods of time period even some zone 6 and 7 can't have it happen.

Hello, I so love love bulb flowers but I am in a hot humid country with no winter,. I tried gladiolas 2 times already but I got 2 flowers out of 12 bulbs. Can I plant them too, by fooling them even if we have no winter? November -February is also cold in my mountain place but the lowest 70-75 degrees F average. Thank you, your videos are so inspiring. I have watched the tomato videos many times, keep repeating

Why do people plant this? So much effort and do u know a refrigerator is one of the most power hungry appliances in your home? And you're gonna buy a refrigerator just to store tulips? How much would that cost? All for what? ooh, pretty flowers. Can i eat tulips?

If one has extra space in a refrigerator, filling it up makes it more efficient. My aunt use to store paper towels in her freezer just for that reason.
Yes that's right. We used to put actual towels in ours.
