We planted a hillside with little early spring bulbs at least 20 years ago and they have multiplied. They are followed by woodland ephemerals, so our pollinators are well fed.
My husband and I have been planting daffodils over the last two years on the boulevard surrounding our house. Wish I had watched your video before planting, because I had no idea you could add different varieties of bulbs in each hole. Great video though and your message helping wildlife out.
Hello friends! I learned a lot of useful and interesting tips from today's video. I especially liked the landing drill. The hose idea is simple and practical. A bumblebee sleeping in a crocus is very poetic! Good luck to you🐝👍🌻💙🌷
So glad. We just shoot an interview with Peggy Anne and she gave us an update on how the lawn did this spring. Should be out this week or next. Be sure to look for it. Thanks.
Thank you for the video. You just gave me an idea how to frame my mailbox area nicely and with less maintenance. I also like your care about pollinators. Spring blooming is my favorite time of the year. Cheers 😘
This is great! I am starting to plant bulbs around my septic fingerings system so we have a huge field of flowers near our garden and food for the bees I want to raise in the next couple of years. THANK YOU!
Last year l used the 1 3/4" dia auger but this year got a really neat tool for hole digging. its a about 9 " in length and has two sets of jaws which form a circle with the handle above. One presses on handle into earth and rotate in both directions. it has a depth gauge on the side. Pull out and pull in on handle and VOILA the clump of earth is released. l picked mine up at ACE hardware in gardening section for $5.99 US(last one)and online they are 11-15$US plus shipping.. l advise using it after some rain to make it make it easier to dig in and make the tool last longer. l used it to plant some 36 early snow glories(blue in color) and some giant crocus., 50 2 month grape hyacinths and 2 dozen dark eye grape hyacinthsl So l will leave a legacy after l'm gone of a complete blue lawn in earky spring . get that tool and as Tony the tiger would say ITS grrrRREAT. and after using it you may want to ditch your auger.(the 4" auger is great for bigger plants).any replies would be appreciated..
Loved this!! 4 yrs we have tried to decide what to do abt our steep slope that starts at the far edge of our front yard, and extends almost straight down to the street. It is an eyesore for us and anyone who drives past our house, 3 out of 4 seasons, because of massive weeds. If we manage to mass-plant bulbs on the slope, I'm afraid weeds will grow between them. No one will be able to pull weeds if that happens, because it's too steep. Is there hope? Can you please advise? Zone 7b, W. TN. Thanks so much! 🐮🤠🌿
Have you ever considered spearding perennial white dutch clover rather than grass seed? It will also then provide additional pollinator support once bulbs are spent & cut down on mowing.
So awesome Peggy! I think this is an amazing idea!!! I totally agree with this idea… i dedicated my front lawn to pollinators as well. So much easier and iless stress. 🧡❤️💜💙💚 Liz in California
Is there an equipment list for the drill and augers and can you list the flower bulbs? I know you mentioned snowdrop as well that you didn’t get into this mix and was just wondering if you eventually got those in to the garden design?
Love this idea! We had problems with squirrels one year, we put down some chicken wire and that kept them away. You've inspired me! Thank you. Can't wait to see your lawn in spring.
I'm curious how you actually use the pepper. I feed squirrels in my yard so there are usually a half dozen or more running around and aerating the lawn 😁 . I would love to plant bulbs in my lawn but wonder if it would just be an expensive wasted effort.
@@sbffsbrarbrr Well, first I usually spray Liquid Fence deer repellent on the plants or growing area in question. Then I shake some cayenne pepper on the same spots and plants. The liquid makes the cayenne cling better and longer to affected areas. I do this with species tulips (which I’ve read elsewhere are supposed to be critter-resistant) and lilies/bulbs. I also have many squirrels in my yard, and if they get some of the pepper on their paws I believe they’ll stay away for the most part. I really only use all of the above in limited-space island beds, not within my lawn.
Peggy, how do you know which holes are the deeper ones vs the shallower ones? It seems like you just throw bulbs in without looking, does it depth of the bulbs really matter that much?
I'm new to bulb planting, and watch this video and was wondering how the outcome was in the spring. Can you link me to that video because I've gone through many of your videos and I can't find it. Thank you!
This is such a great idea! Do you have to eventually divide these bulbs? I’m not super familiar with bulbs but I’ve heard it’s recommended to divide every few years or so for best performance. Not sure if it’s actually necessary or not but just wondering how much work that would be if it needed to be done for a large area like that.
Peggy Anne says, "No need for dividing really. You can after many years if you want to start a new group someplace else. They really just get better and better!" Thanks for watching and commenting.
This is the best idea I've seen. It's like the best of the both worlds. From where can I get 1000 bulbs for an affordable price right before fall. Kindly advise, I live in Rhode Island, zone 6b. Thank you
You can use augers because you have good soil. My is clay soil almost like rocks sometimes. i would break my wrist with that auger. I think I will stick to pots but i am still watching lol
Maybe you said and I missed it, where did you get all the bulbs you used in this video? I just planted my first 100 crocus and would love to add alternating blooms. Thanks!
Where can I order huge quantities of crocus and other flowers with grass like foliage to do this? My front lawn is massive and it would cost a fortune to buy bulbs in bags of 50 at the hardware store.
What is the brand of bulb digger you are using? I need to purchase one like that as I am getting older and can no longer plant bulbs using a hand bulb-digger 😅
@@GardenGateMagazine I believe he said pre - emergent herbicide is harmful but pre- emergent crabgrass is not but it is harmful to bees that pollinate the bulbs that absorb it.

So glad. We just shoot an interview with Peggy Anne and she gave us an update on how the lawn did this spring. Should be out this week or next. Be sure to look for it. Thanks.
Love! We completely removed our turf this year to create a pollinator paradise. This is a great way to still have turf but also support pollinators.

what kind of fertilizer did you use please???

They should. They will work there way through boxes at the garden center!

if i treat my yard for weeds, will that kill off the bulbs?
