Been there done that, remember acting on an unlawful order makes you liable to disciplinary action, as much as the person who gives the order , and in the Police the buck stops at the lowest rank in the chain.

I can kind of understand that in the street but there's no excuse for not going home and learning what to say next time, so you don't end up looking like a muppet in court, or on camera.

@@johnvienta7622 I agree with johnvienta7622. We can't know whether they would have started something like this on their own if they had not recognised AB. Doing this was the fundamental problem. Recognising AB pushed them towards having the courage to disobey a command from their sergeant. Had it been someone other than AB, the risk of getting in trouble for disobeying the sergeant would have been far greater, and it would have been far less clear that their sergeant did not have a legitimate reason for the search.
That's the problem with all command structures. Often there is no time to communicate all the details that justify a command, and even when there is, people are often too lazy, too bad with language or too agitated to do it. Therefore when someone new arrives on the scene, it is the normal case, not an exception, that they don't really understand what's going on. But they are still expected to follow all commands whose basis they don't understand. Except, of course, for commands that they _know_ to be illegal. But that's a very high bar that is rarely met. Arguably it wasn't even met in this case. This is why refusing to follow the command took courage.

Speaking rudely to a member of a public. Aggression, intimidation and allowing breaking the law. Accosting and antagonizing a citizen. Trying to control how talk goes, where he stands.. After noticing they can't intimidate him with 'I will arrest you, I will search you', they start to lie and manipulate. Police Constables cannot be aggravated or feeling harassed, alarmed or distressed. You are SUPPOSED TO TAKE ABUSE.
This is how they act when cameras are not around and they don't like your answers. Like thugs. Imagine if the younger PC didn't recognize him. Another civil claim that would be 100% won by AB.
