    Gene Rodenberry himself stated that Kirk and Spock were soulmates. In fact, he even said that if it were possible for the time they could have had a physical relationship.
    The actors have also mentioned multiple times how Kirk and Spock seemed to have a romantic relationship.
    It's perfectly fine if you want to call your friend the Kirk to your Spock without inferring you two are intimate, however you don't have to erase Kirk and Spock's rather valid romance to do it.

      @@tomf3150 In the End its only up to Gene Roddenberry what he in intended or thought of Spock and Kirk's Relationship to be. It's clear that you won't find any clear statement or confirmation in any of the Books or else where, because CBS would immediately block that, just like in the 60s. The first Star Trek TOS Film, the Book, Gene Roddenberrys Statement in 1978, and the comparing of Kirk and Spock Relationship being similar with Alexander and Hephaistions, is far more, than you could expect at that Time. I'm just reminding of Th'y'la. Gene Roddenberrys own invented Vulcan Word, which can also mean Lover. So we can clearly see, that he wasn't bothered with what you want to call them, and left any possibilities open.

      Let's NOT imagine what was NEVER depicted. Why isn't it enough that they were like brothers whose fates were irrevocably bound together. Kirk says that as long as Spock is with him, could not die. And indeed, in Generations, there was no Spock there to save Kirk.

      @@KreativeSpinnerin Thanks. Your point is perfectly valid and I understand Gene Rodenberry's openmindness (sp?). I was merely stating that in my opinion there's more "magic" if sexuality is left out.

    tbh, whether you like it or not, they're pretty clearly soulmates. Jim would seem to agree, given how many times in the movies he refers to Spock as his other/nobler half, describes Spock's soul as being his responsibility, etc. whether you regard their relationship as romantic or platonic, you can never take away the intensity and importance of what they are to each other, a relationship unmatched by anything else in either of their lives.

    Not all male best friends in films have huge fanbases that want them to be a couple. In Star Trek KirkxBones is seen as a platonic bromance pairing by most people. Same with HarryxRon from Harry Potter, BrucexTony from the Avengers, HanxLuke from Star Wars, etc. Point being that people don't see the potential for deeper relationships in ALL male TV friendships. Dislike it all you want but the Kirk/Spock fanbase exists for a reason.

      Besides, let us not forget that K/S came first. This theory came up in the early 70s. There was even a time when, if you said 'slash', you were referring particularly to Kirk and Spock as a romantic couple. The other pairings all came later. If you think about how rarely people questioned someone's sexual orientation back then...
      Also, thank you for the remark on Bones! So true!

  • @mieroth
    @mieroth 11 ปีที่แล้ว +98

    There are some iconic male/male fan pairings through history. Kirk/Spock is one of the most iconic. Sherlock Holmes/John Watson is another one. Both these pairings share a deep intimate connection - they are both closer to each other than to anyone else. There doesn't have to be a sexual implication because that's largely irrelevant. They can all be celibate for all we care - as long as they're together. That's the true romance "fangirls" are after.

      they are trying to touch full palm to full palm here.
      as far as i know, spocks parents were kissing by touching the tips of their 2nd and 3rd fingers.
      and spocks family s adopted daughter saavik sort of french kissed him when his body was so rapidly regrowing from a baby to an adult that he had to go trough ponfarr again, and there was only her and kirks son there so she had to "sate the fires" as it were to save his life, by touching his hands backside by again the tips of her two fingers....
      so i have no idea what this two are doing here.
      i would like to know if spock or any other vulcan was ever portrayed in a scene full palm touching. maybe there is and i dont know. but that would make spocks parents s touching not a kiss but a peck at the cheek or forehead. and saaviks kiss (a ponfarr kiss mind you) is a kiss on the lips. and that still would make this a heavy petting.

    • @aford9470
      @aford9470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In The Voyage Home, Spock and Sybok lightly press their hands together in a ta'al shape near the end of the movie. With Spock and the Romulan commander, they also have their hands together in the ta'al shape, but they rub their hands together for an extended amount of time. And Sarek and Amanda pressed their fore and middle fingers to the other's to express affection and the nature of their relationship. So, I assume the ta'al rubbing is like making out, pressing the ta'al briefly to someone else's is like a farewell hug for family members, and touching the fore and middle fingers to someone else's is like a chaste kiss on the lips. So, at 4:04 it could have been a kiss or what Spock did with Sybok. But when Jim surrounds Spock's hand with both of his hands, I have to assume that that is the Vulcan equivalent of, like, passionate French kissing; or at least something very intimate.

  • @kikizabadass

    Anyone else pick up on the whole movie 3 undertones? Sarek is SURE spocks soul is *in* kirk, but it’s really in bones. Then Kirk sacrifices the Enterprise to find Spock, despite the entire premise of tos/tas being ‘Kirk loves his ship more than anything’. I SHIP IT HARD.

  • @V1kte

    Having in mind Michael's recent explanation about Vulcans overcompensating in public when it comes to close relationships makes the first scene so much funnier :D. Jim is swooning there, and Spock is actively ignoring him with the equal intensity :D. And I'm assuming the harder the Vulcan is overcompensating, the stronger the underlying impulse is, so yeah, here you have it :D.

    Do I think they ever were sexually involved together or something? No. But romantic love doesn't necessarily involve sex. Doesn't matter if you see them as lovers or friends, there's no doubt that they were the most important person in each other's lives. And that's enough for me.

They know each other better than themselves. Kirk is the only human being Spock trusts enough to share the emotions being the vulcan logic. They are like twin brothers, they are part of each other.

    You don't have to call it "plagued". It's just one interpretation. In any case, even most brothers don't share that many meaningful looks with each other or are that open with each other (Especially when one of them is stoic Mr Spock). You can't really blame people for seeing it as being sexually charged. It's either sub-text romantic or it's a super-dooper bromance. In any case, it's very sweet to watch. Especially since Shatner and Nimoy are friends in real life.

    @AliceInWonderland85 It is noteworthy however that in decades past, when being in a relationship or being attracted to someone of the same sex was entirely unacceptable, it was commonplace for two men in a "gay" (in quotations because it is my belief that kirk and Spock are both bisexual, but in love with each other) to refer to each other as "brothers." So back in the 60s when Star Trek started, it was a way to be somewhat subtle about the nature of their relationship.

    Well, to me they don't have a sexual relationship, but it's still love. The one, true love. Nobody ever said, that love has to be sexual. It's platonic, but so what? They are closer than most husbands and their wives. ( Actually I think that they COULD have a sexual relationship as well, if Spock wouldn't be ... well ... Spock. I don't think, he ever would, not because he wouldn't want, but just because he's too much Vulcan. )

    so in other words tyhla means love and we all know love has different meanings. romantic love/sibling love/ friendship love/ parental love. the list goes on but the thing is this we all know that kirk and spock were sexually and romantic involved with women. it is not fair either for many slash fans to keep dismissing that.

      I believe that, after his experiences Spock had made during the Kolinahr on Vulcan, to erase his Human Side, he finally learned through his Mind Meld with V'Ger, how cold and lonely, an Existence without Feelings, especially Love would be. I'm highlighting the Word "Love" here in particularly, because we can see, how V'Ger, learns through the Couple Decker and Ilia, what it was actually missing the whole Time, and why both of them, complete V'Ger towards the End of the Film. In my honest Opinion, the Parallels between Ilia /Decker and Kirk/Spock, lead to the Conclusion, that they are mirroring K/S, to reveal something about them. If it would have been simply Friendship, Spock could have said it without hesitation. And the Fact, that The Motion Picture, was also the last Film Roddenberry was totally in Control of mostly, should say enough. Also, even though Books supposedly aren't Canon, the T'hyla Word, only appeared in the Book of this Film, written by Gene Roddenberry. ❤

    Who says it has to be "gay"? They are friends. I have a male friend I'm very close with, and we sometimes share deep thoughts and emotions - we aren't gay - quite the opposite. We've just "been through death and life together" and developed a deep kinship over the years like few others seem to do. :)

      Marshak and Culbreath: "There's a great deal of writing in the Star Trek movement now which compares the relationship between Alexander and Hephaistion to the relationship between Kirk and Spock -- focusing on the closeness of the friendship, the feeling that they would die for one another --"
      Roddenberry: "Yes, there's certainly some of that, certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal... we never suggested in the series... physical love between the two. But it's the... we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."

  • @PersianAustralian

    Works of art are always open to interpretation. And considering Kirk and Spock basically started the whole slash genre, I'm gonna guess that a lot of people get a romantic vibe when they watch the relationship. At the very least most people consider it an iconic "bromance".

    • @KreativeSpinnerin

      No, I believe so too. The earlier version of the Screenplay of this scene, gives a moment , in which Kirk holds out his hand to spock after his speech, and Spock presses his Forehead against it: namely within the Description of the Screenplay "Hard. Harder". It was changed later on, so that it wouldn't appear, but if that doesn't come close to private intimacy between the two, I really don't know what else.

    They're from the Bible. Jonathan was the son of King Saul and David was anointed as Saul's successor by the prophet Samuel (it's a bit complicated). This made Saul ridiculously paranoid, and he started trying to kill David. However Jonathan was very close to David and he helped him escape Saul. David's relationship with Jonathan could be interpreted as homoerotic. When Jonathan was killed, David actually stated that his love was more pleasurable than that of a woman.

    • @natalieblack1698
      @natalieblack1698 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Precisely. Kirk being pansexual is pretty much canon. There's a paragraph in novelization of ST:1 where he talks about his sexual preferences, saying that he has no objections to any sex with anyone but enjoys it most with women. Clearly he's had enough to compare. His reasoning for not having Spock as a lover is mismatched sex drives, since Vulcans have sex every seven years.

    Can anyone tell me why Spock was so distant towards Jim at the beginning of the first movie? I mean, he comes aboard, doesn't say a word of greeting, and looks like there's nothing there, not friendship or anything. Even to a total stranger as Captain, this behavior would have been odd, bordering on rude. Jim stares and goes 'Spock.... Spock!' and Spock acts as if he wasn't even there, until he has to acknowledge him to talk about this communication with star fleet. What's going on there?

    • @LiunaTiger
      @LiunaTiger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a "continuation" of when he was on Vulcan for the Kolinahr and almost got the symbol of logic.
      After arriving on Enterprise he explains he felt a powerful consciousness back on Vulcan (V'Ger).
      And it becomes full why he was like that when he feels sorry for V'ger and says " I weep for V’Ger, as I would for a brother. As I was when I came aboard, so is V’Ger now, empty, incomplete… searching. Logic and knowledge are not enough." (About life).

    • @Stella-vj6sx
      @Stella-vj6sx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiunaTiger first of all, thanks for your reply :) But secondly, okay, I know the plot. But to me, it doesn't explain why he doesn't even greet him or something. I mean, at the very least, Kirk is the Captain of the ship that's taking him where he needs to be. And it's trying to get his attention. Vulcans may be unemotional, but I never saw Spock neglecting at least polite formalities before in TOS. I got the impression that they had a fight in the time between TOS and TMP.
