  • Pretty simple Fuel filter change on a 2021 Silverado 1500 with the LM2 3.0L Duramax Diesel.
Per GM document from Service Information:
    1. Clean Housing
    2. Drain Water/Fuel Separator
    3. Remove Water Separator Assembly
    4. With assembly upside down, remove filter from cap
    5. Remove and discard 2 o-rings
    6. Clean Cap, Install Cap o-ring and install filter into cap
    7. Install o-ring on filter housing pipe
    8. Install and tighten to 18 ft lbs
    9. Prime fuel system - Ignition on for 2 minutes. Ignition Off. Start the vehicle. If the engine does not start, repeat. if engine starts but runs rough, increase idle slowly to purge air from fuel system. Inspect for leaks.
    10. Reset fuel filter monitor on dash.

Appreciate ya! They wanted to charge $150 for this, and as it needs to be done every 20,000ish miles I'd rather do it myself. "My" dealership is hot garbage and I'd bet money they would just reset the gauge and call it a day. Haven't had a single visit where everything went smooth, and I've literally only went for oil changes with tire rotations.

In order to utilize the drain plug on the filter housing you need to back the housing off after you loosen the drain plug when you feel the housing start to turn easy stop and pull the drain plug the rest of the way out if need be turn the housing slightly to make sure seal is broken and housing will drain out for minimal mess this is why you didn’t get any drainage when you pulled the drain plug initially.

It was nice to see I didn't have any water in the fuel by removing the drain. I was trying to follow the GM service procedure to provide that info. I like your input on this and may give it a try next time around. thanks!

I like your approach and methods your videos are well done and enjoyable I just thought I would mention that one step been draining and pulling fuel filter housings for a number of years same principles apply no matter who makes it just like when you dip a straw in water and place your thumb over the end and lift it out water remains trapped in the straw until you remove your thumb and air can freely flow through the straw to empty it. I just bought one of these 3.0 Duramax Silverado’s picking it up this week and glad I’m missing out on the cylinder deactivation on the 23’s I thought start/stop was ridiculous on a diesel but that is really dumb in my humble opinion but what the hell do I know I’ve only been working on turbine and diesel engines for 41 years lol. Keep up the good work your my go to info guy on these impressive 3.0 mill’s so I’m subscribed.

If that housing is plastic, I wouldn’t spray brake cleaner on it. I’m sure it’s very durable but brake clean is unbelievably caustic on most materials. In my experience, it tends to make plastic parts brittle. A blast with compressed air or a water hose is the safest bet for getting rid of big debris.

Two questions for ya as a new Silverado 3.0 owner. 1. I see the first step was the water drain and there wasn’t any. Do you do this more often then only when you change the filter? As a pilot, we routinely check the tanks for water and just wondered if this is an issue in diesel trucks file systems. And 2. Do you have any recommendations for which oil companies have better or more consistent diesel fuel? What has your experience been? Some of the videos scare me on quality, underground tank maintenance and such so I want to make sure I find the best if that’s possible. Also as a bonus, do you use any additives in the fuel? Many tks. Love the channel.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Welcome to the channel and the 3.0 family!
I did the water drain merely to follow the gm procedure, I have never seen water come out. If you do open the drain and water comes out, that should be your cue to find a different fueling station.
The way I choose fuel is to go to a big name (chevron/shell/texaco/76) and make sure I go to one that I know is high volume or is in a potentially high volume area. I tried multiple local stations and ended on my local chevron. The thing I noticed with different stations was the fuel mpg seemed to vary with other stations and the noise level from the engine varied with different stations ( the diesel knock sound on accelleration)

@@hammer-r It seems to be nearly impossible to find top tier diesel. If you look at their site there are tons of stations around here with top tier gas but no mention of diesel. I have been using that Hot Shots can't think of what its called EDB something like that. Believe they say 1 oz per 25 gallons something like that on the jug. I usually put an oz of it in every time I fill up. I have only had the truck a few weeks though and only have about 900 miles on it so haven't done much refueling lol. I did a 700 mile trip this week though and I refilled 2x but both times I still had over a half tank. Just mom was driving my old truck with the 5.3 so she was having to stop for gas so figured I would just top off while I was there too. @@JesseLJohnson Tks for the info. Yea here in northern illinois, there is only one and it’s a Costco about 20 miles away. So I went there and filled up. While I’m no expert on this truck ( I only have 2000 miles on it) it seemed to me to get worse mileage. So what I’ve done lately is hit various big newer stations when my tank was about 1/2 empty. This way if I hit a bad one, I might be able to skate by until the next fill up. Not sure if that’s logical but I’m still trying to figure out what brands around here are the best, if that’s possible. I do notice that most stations have a sticker on the pump stating biodiesel. I’ve heard to try to stay away from that, but it’s hard. I also use hot shots, 1 ounce per fill up. No discernible difference yet. But then again as my first diesel, I’m not fully tuned into its performance and sounds yet. Time will help that. When I get to Colorado this summer, the local Costco has supposed tier 1 diesel and I’ll run a couple tank fulls while out there and see if I notice anything. Let’s hope the crap we do buy out there is good enough for our expensive trucks. I’d love to hear of one of the oil companies state that they do their own diesel and stand behind its quality. I’d be a buyer then.

@@hammer-r I have Costco a few miles from my house but the one here only sells gas same with the one by my parents and pretty sure the one in Mobile by our other house. I just bought this truck its a 23 Denali Ultimate only have 900 miles on it so far. I do know one of the 2 times I have topped it off on the road trip it said the diesel contained 15 or 20% biodiesel and it didn't seem to run as good. That was at I think a Shell station. Driving around town I haven't got any better then 19.5 mpg but its not broken in yet I guess got just short of 30 on the highway
