Finn here! The feeling is the same for most of us in November, when it's both cold and dark. Everybody feels like a bear who needs to go to sleep for the winter. 😊 But we learn to just be more forgiving to our selves during that time. You don't have to be energetic all year round. For that part of the year relax, wear warm clothes, eat and drink something yammy, light candles in the evening, take naps, have a daylight lamp by your work station. Soon we'll have some snow, which reflects the light, so it feels a lot better, and the Christmas lights come on, and after the Christmas days are alredy getting longer again. So just for this little bit before Christmas and snow, find your inner bear and hibernate a bit. ❤

One thing I have noticed in these sites about Finland is that visitors never talk about Finnish literature, movies, art, music, etc. If one wants to get a better Finnish experience, they should look into those things. Well, that applies to other countries as well.
A thing that has always bothered me about the US is the so-called outgoingness of Americans, and maybe that is true of Australia too. But I was brought up in a Great Lakes region small town largely populated by people of Finnish origin like me. Less was more in talking. Though I never learned Finnish properly, when I visited Finland, people were surprised that I could pronounce place names, food and other daily things so well.
i was sort of surprised, but shouldn't have been, that the landscape was so similar to where I was from.

I'm a native and I pretty much sleep all day during winter, no energy what so ever. Guess I was born to hibernate, lol.
The darkness does get to me too and especially summer ending always does too, as I feel late spring and summer are really the only seasons I like here. I love summer but it's such a fleeting moment in this cold greyness we call Pohjola.
Good coping mechanism, especially now, when it's the darkest is to remember that the darkest day of the year is the 21st of December. you hang in there, until then and the days begin to get longer, first by seconds, then by minutes, then by hours. ;)

I don't mind the darkness because spring will come but if it gets really cold that sucks for me. I have friends who love it though. If the winter was always snowy and held firm at around -1 to -5 degrees Celsius, I would love it, that kind of winter weather is actually wonderful! But I hate anything colder than -10 C. And I hate it when it thaws and then freezes so it gets icy and slippery, that sucks.

Your Finnish is great! I myself am a Swedish speaking Finn, and I have been working my whole life for my Finnish. Today I am rather sure that my Finnish is OK, the Finns say so too, but one has to remember that I am 79 years old. (!!!) Finnish is a wonderful language, not only because it is so hard but also because it has such a potential for expressing anything that you need to express. Plus that they do it in a very charming way! Humour in Finnish is like nothing else in the world! Lots of Swedish speaking Finns have emigrated to Sweden because they haven´t been able to master the Finnish language. And I remember for ever when I was in Stockholm with a group of 14 year olds, and one of them said: "Imagine! Everything is in Swedish!" It was a treat. But Finland is our homeland, regardless. I am extremely proud of knowing Finnish, it is the second hardest language in the world! And the people is very special! I remember how poor we were after the last war with the Soviet Union - poor and drunk (!) and swearing! - and today we belong to the most successful. In a very short time the Finns have succeeded in taking their place among the most successful peoples of the world. I am very proud.

Kaamosmasennus is reaaaal at the moment but its usually just the time before snow arrives when its just the worst. You can already feel the mood changing now when there's a nice winter weather thats not too cold but it lightens up the weather. But yeah it's real every year and if you work normal office hours like 8-16 it's gonna suck for you living in darkness and spending the days in the office since there's not gonna be any light when you get off.

Anyway, the Finnish sounds great, and even I don't fully know how to speak great Finnish, and I was born and raised here, so it is a little difficult.

It's much easier to learn Swedish as an English speaking person. Unfortunately, nowadays it's quite hard to come around with just Swedish in Finland, if your not living in Österbotten or Åland (where I live). Officially, Finland is bilingual but not really in reality.

One time he had sick leave and I asked him "What did you have?" "Well I had "Rye bull""... It sound's like "minulla oli rye bull" and that doesn't say anything. Eventually he told me he had diarhea.

Your Finnish is good, a good way to continue fostering it, is to know where you can integrate it into your life, just enough that you can maintain the skill of speech and get better, without diminishing your English. There is only really the stiffness you need to shake off, and you will speak Finnish like a native. If you are intending on living in coastal areas of Finland, as a secondary option you can learn to speak Swedish, it is a constitutionally recognized second government language, GRANTED, there is much less speakers of it in here in Finland. Swedish will be far more easier to learn as a stop gap, if you are finding speaking or learning Finnish difficult.
I think you might be trying to suppress certain motions and or muscles to control your tone when you speak Finnish, this most likely is the source of your stiffness when you speak Finnish. Try to find out which muscles exactly you tense up to produce the proper tone of speaking Finnish. I think, maybe a ten minute practice daily of speaking few sentences in Finnish, first slowly, then slowly accelerate after repeating those few sentences, until the times up. Up to you though.

for me summertime is just pure torture, I'm allergic to effin _everything_ that's in the air from plants, trees & bugs. I have to take 3 different pills, use eyedrops & nasal sprays and my eyes & nose still just _leak_ allll the time. I also use ADHD & depresso meds that rise my body temperature, so when it's 25-30+ °C it feels like I'm living in a sauna 247. I also have MC1R-gene ("the red head gene") which makes me super sensitive to sun exposure _and_ it also makes me "feel the heat" even more.
Sunshine is like my dementor, it sucks the life & happiness out of me (even in winter), dunno if it's because of the MC1R-gene or I'm just partly a vampire 🤓
Btw it's an interesting gene to check out, it's not just about freckes & red hair💃
Happy to see u like living here and your finnish is on point, hope u some day get comfortable speaking it😊
