I’m a laborer at a gold mine, so I’m on my feet 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and walk up to 15 miles a day in rugged terrain. I have worn my Thorogoods for 3 years and they are hands down the most comfortable shoe I own. I bought a second pair to wear casually because they are so comfortable and still have a classic look.
Cool name. I too work 6 days a week but as maintenance on a farm. I was looking at the thorogood boots. Have you worn the same pair of boots for 3 years? I really want a thorogood boot but they make them sound weak with all the man made material.
If you want a quality American work boot that will not destroy your foot or wallet with long break in…get a Thorogood. However, if your outdoors on a farm, might think about something waterproof from the 1957 line.
I had a pair of red wings and within a month I sold them they killed my feet and im a welder with the iron workers union and once I switched to thorogood it was all history. I've just bought a second pair to wear cause like you they are more comfortable then my shoes
I usually don’t comment on videos. However there was so much work done to create this video and I hope this comment helps out with the TH-cam algorithm. Great video. Very informative.
I feel like based on the charts and breakdown, the White's are the best for work, not the Thorogood's. They score more often on the work oriented side more than any other boot here. I think that is what I am going with. Thanks for the breakdown Wes.
This is what I was thinking, too. They also ranked more durable in most areas, just behind the Redwings. I do think they're also the best hybrid with only some break-in, but only if you dig the style. The Thorogood's seemed like the next best hybrid if you prefer a more casual look.
I agree… unless he’s factoring comfort into the work-appropriateness. If he is, then Thorogood makes sense, as they are almost as comfortable as the Thursday, but a little more durable.
That's a lot of work for this video. I'm not even that interested in these shoes but it's interesting how much you can learn and get a good idea on what a good shoe/boot technically is!
I've worn Danner, Timberland, and Sorel for boots and New Balance 990 series for 20 years. The 990's are the most comfortable, supporting shoe I've found.
Just finished my first 6hours in my Whites Perry Boot. I have NEVER spent more than $140 for a pair of shoes so these at $279 was hard to swallow but man I'm glad I did. They are so comfortable right out of the box.
I picked up a pair of Thorogood's as a steel toe work boot and I love them. I work indoors in a fairly light duty shop/office environment. I was tired of wearing athletic shoes. I chose Thorogood's because they reviewed well, and the local Boot Barn had a ton of pairs so I could find the perfect fit. They make me feel good every time I lace them up.
Wow, just wow. Now folks need to send in their old moc toes to see what the failure points are in this style of boot. That would make a neat set of videos for next Moctober. Don't forget to include a work history of each boot--number of resoles, industry or activity used, daily wear versus seasonal use etc. And you don't need to cut them up if some can be revived with simple repairs and donated. "Boots don't fail; they become wallets."
I teach woodshop and robotics for a living and I’m coming from cowboy-style work boots. For me the allure of lace ups is a more consistent fit-so far, every cowboy style boot has been good in the beginning but as they get about a year of wear, they become loose and cause blisters and hotspots if I walk in them for long periods. I tried on a pair of Redwings and didn’t like them at all-they felt really bulky. Tried on a set of Thorogoods, and it hurt to put my feet into one that was my size…..I took them right back off. No one local to me sells Whites that I’m aware of, and at $310, I don’t see myself ordering a pair to try out. I’m interested in the Thursdays boots, but I’m also interested in one I saw advertised in a QLTY brand. I like your channel-very informative.
After all your videos i went with the Thorogood Moc Toe 8”. Im a Journeyman Plumber that wears them all day and i have no problem wearing them on the weekend as well. Most comfortable boots ive owned. Thanks!
I'd like to see you cut a high performance climbing shoe in half because the engineering behind the ruber is wild and I think you'll find it interesting
How did I miss this a year ago? So much relevant information, presented so clearly! I wound up buying the Thursday, definitely not for work. But it's comfy, and in rotation, should last long enough.
I was just gifted a pair of the iconic Red Wings. Im excited to being the "right of passage" in breaking them in. Only ever worn a steel toe timberland prior to this so its a huge step up!
I'm a fan of redwing as I'm from Minnesota but as a commercial roofer they typically last 2.5 years at best. Commercial roofing with hot tar is just brutal... You'll tear your ankles up ripping them up off the roof at moments .
I have a pair of the Thursday boots I bought earlier this year. I like them as a casual wear boot, definitely not a boot to work in. The toe box is snug and narrow for my foot and I did not size down as their website said to do. I do own three other pairs of Thursday boots and I'm quite happy with them. One pair, I ordered in a 10-1/2EE, they are a perfect fit with just enough room for my toes don't rub on the sides of the boot. Just placed an order for a pair of the Whites, cant wait for them to arrive. I might be lucky to get them before Christmas, I not holding my breath!!!! As always, thanks for the fantastic work you have done here. Really enjoyed your reviews and cutting shoes in half. I never thought in my wrong mind to cut a pair of shoes in half as you do!!! Ken
I own both the Red Wing & Thursday Moc Toe’s. Redwings are my go-to woodworking/construction project boots. Thursday’s are my go-to all-around boot. I love them both. I’m very impressed with the Thursday boots. Their durability and comfort has held up since 2018. The Red Wings are since 2016 and have lived up to their age old reputation as well.
I’m currently wearing the White’s Perry Boot. This is by far the most comfortable working boot I’ve ever worn. Also using it for casual wear and it looks good! If you’re getting these boots, go down a size. I wear a 10 in Nike, I got the White’s boot in a 9 and they fit perfect 👌🏻
I never tried Nike I always wear New Balance in 10W. I don't think Nike does wides so I'm not sure how it would compare. I know I'm being a pain in the ass, but I hate to have to mail the damn things back. I guess at some point I'll just have to send it, lol.
What I've discovered about buying online is that sizing is a challenge. Even whilst following recommendations by the manufacturer and or the concensus of the masses. Nothing beats trying them on live. I just received my Thorogoods and they are too tight. I also received them in a reinforced toe when I was sure I ordered a soft toe. I will say the boots are quite handsome but now I have to return them ,that takes time..
Shank is super important to aid heel to toe transition when you walk. Not only it adds structure to the shoe, but more importantly it make sure the center part (when viewed from the side) of the shoe does not flex. It make sense once you think about which part of your feet are bones and which part are joints that flex.
Every Moctober video had me choosing a different boot (I almost pulled the trigger for the Red Wings), but in the end I went with the Thursdays! Can't wait for them to arrive. Thanks for all the info dude!
I have a pair of Carolina moc toes that I’ve worn every day for a year. They are so comfortable but the sole is pretty much foam and is worn almost completely smooth.
Loved the moctober series can’t wait for next year, this series gave me so much information and allowed me to make the best decision when I purchased my boots.
I'm 42 live in the pnw and I can't stop watching this channel. I always forget to like and subscribe on TH-cam. I feel it should automatically do so if you watch for more the 5 mins
I got my thorogoods almost 2 years ago and they have held up great. Unfortunately I've heard a lot of bad reports in recent months. I hope they're quality control is better when I'm ready fora new pair.
The whole vid I was feeling overwhelmed with the individual slide scales - then he put all the categories together and it was like instant relief 😂 well done 👌🏼
Weston =, once again another great video! I hope you're doing well even with the COVID! This video suggests that it isn't slowing you down! Glad to see you looking well and you're able to keep these going! Great job!!
I just went with the White’s after watching your moctober videos. The new-ness of the boot interested me, and though the red wings are iconic I wanted something a bit different as I also just purchased some iron rangers. It’s interesting that you recommend the Thorogood boots for work as the whites generally rated on your top end for sturdiness and durability. I guess you valued the no break in period for work boots very highly. Thanks for your cool content!
Thorogood are also the least heritage inspired. So if you mess them up you don't feel like your damaging a good boot. You're just wearing out a shit boot which doesn't feel so bad.
Something to keep in mind with Thursday in general, they have what I’ve heard referred to as the “Thursday drop” where after a couple of years, the poron inside or foam or whatever just completely flattens out and becomes very uncomfortable and you might need some help from a cobbler. I own two pairs of Thursday captains and it happened to both of them. I can’t speak on the Moc toe however but I thought I’d share my experience.
I love my Thorogoods. My one complaint is that the canvas lining in mine have worn away and left the toe stiffener exposed. So i reached in with a box knife and cut out the toe stiffener, which made them much more comfortable, but the residual bits of the lining that are attached where the upper and the vamp are sewn together rubs on the top of my foot. After a long day it is literally rubbing the skin off. I'd love to get them rebuilt with a leather lining.
Whites or Thorogood. I have owned Whites for over 30 years.. but have no experience with Thorogood. Ihave not owned Moc Toe for over 50 years.. NPA ( Not particularly attractive) I am waffling about Whites because they currently seem to not be the Whites Co. of former years. I suspect either would be a good choice. Excellent video. Hope you are well.
Wow, wow, wow. This is flipping awesome. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, I appreciate it greatly. You basically answered every possible question and did it faster than I could even ask them. Instant subscriber! Keep up the great work, Man!
I wish you would have included the insert with the thorogoods because they do come as part of the boot and therefore are part of the boot construction. it would be like reviewing athletic shoes but you take the inserts out.
This video had so much in it, overall I went redwing. Thank you ever so much for cutting and informing us. Your videos on MocToe made my choice a confidant and easy one. The graphics was awesome, thanks so much for what you do, I'm getting some Nicks Robert with toe cap, thanks to you. The wait is well worth what I saw in your video. I'm sharing and showing your videos to all my buds and they are just eating it up.
This is a great video man, just my thoughts though as a Bootmaker all boots should be difficult to break in and have hard leather insoles because it’s only those type of components that yield longevity of the boots. From 1700’s to about maybe 1970’s this was the only way boots were really made.
Just ordered the Perry's. I wanted a moc toe for work. I am a union plumber and go through boot soles every 6 months. Hope the Perry's last as longer then my last pair of Danners.
I just recently got home from being active duty, now I’m an apprentice carpenter and I went with Thorogood for my first boot, I figured my boots were my most important tool👍
I need steal toed and parents always went with red wing. So I went with 8” 2414. I absolutely love them except the super soles don’t last long at all so had them resoled with the vibran sole. 2 years old worn every single day work or not. I am a cabinet maker.
Fantastic video! Thank you for your hard work I’ve been wearing work boots for thirty years and what you just went through is on this video is the best advice you could have ever given to someone It the being of this series I was a little doubtful but you hit it out of the park !
I know Moctober is over, but it would be interesting to see what Padilla moc toe construction looks like. The only place I have found them is on eBay. Thanks, love the channel!
I'll buy and wear Thorogood until I don't need boots again. Great boot for working construction with no break-in period. Straight out of the box for me they are perfect
Wanted a casual everything boot that I would not be working in, just an all arounder for walking in the city so I chose the Thursday.. should arrive in a few days!
I would absolutely love to purchase whites because I love their set up but unfortunately they don’t offer a steel toe moc toe and my company requires them. I did speak to white’s and they are researching it and potentially offering them but as far as when is unknown currently
Good video. For me, I've had Thorogoods for a few years. I don't like them. The uppers are too soft. The heel counter and stitching are too low and tore up my socks and the skin on my heels a few times. I have White's on order.
@Rose Anvil Awesome video series! I came to your channel a few months ago interested in your Tim's comparison... 8 months later and I have since bought the Tim's, Iron Rangers, White's and two pairs of Nick's... I also bought one of your belt's so at least you kinda got a cut of the sales! Man this channel is getting expensive... Kinda want those Perry's haha
Thorgood is a great boot. I have three pairs. My first pair are six years old moc toe wedge sole. I've worn them everyday for 6 years with the exception of the time they were gone getting new soles. I bought a second matching pair just so I wouldn't have to go without for the almost 2 weeks it took to get my boots back. My third pair are waterproof with heavier cleated maxware sole I use outdoors in the winter. My only complaint is I've worn through the lining above my toe area and I can feel the edges of the toe reinforcing when I feel in there with my hand. I don't notice it when I'm wearing them. That's an area where the red wings would be better. I'm figuring somewhere around 7 years and I will be done with them. That's great value for likely over 2500 days off use for a boot I found comfortable right out of the box.
This is outstanding!! Very nice work. Hopefully this will be seen by many people who are in the market for a great pair of moc toe boots. The only question I have is why the Red Wings' upper leather didn't rate as highly for durability. I'd expect they'd last as long as any boot, as I've seen so many pictures of that same boot being very worn and broken in. Other than that very minor question, this is great stuff. Thanks for doing this!
I took out the insert of my thorogoods because it made the boot too tight. Maybe I should have got a bigger size to make up for this but they are my size and they fit very well overall without the insert.
This is fantastic and im sure a ton of work. Thank you for bringing this content out. Ive been looking at purchasing a moc toe for work and I've been following your channel closely to help me decide so thank you!!!
Why don't people talk about the advantages of a removable insert? Using a 3rd party orthotic like a Superfeet insole can make the world of a difference to some people, especially if they are on their feet all day. I hate the fact that very few high quality shoes and boots have removable insoles.
amazing video - it doesn't get more informative or comprehensive than this, especially as a wrap up to the more detailed individual reviews that preceded it. I own RW and Thorogoods but based on this comparative info, I am heading for a new pair of Whites - thank you! Hey to Toaster.
That was actually excellent! Informative, with the information presented plainly, and, a very good recommendation on each boot for the purpose it will fit the easiest. Thanks, man. peace
I see why you put all these boots together I'm this category but you should do a review on the timberland pro moc toe sometime. I own thorogoods and the timbs and for the price I think the timbs are a very good value.
Thanks for this video lots of great info I’m in the market for some of these boots. I think I’m going for the Red Wings it will be for casual wear I want something to last and don’t want deal with replacing something quick if it’s get damage. Thursdays are good boots but they don’t have the color that suits me.
Great video series Wes! Please tell the viewers the model number of Red Wing boot you reviewed. I have been wearing Red Wings for years (at work) but I noticed that I had purchased different numbered boots over the years (I had about 5 pairs in my garage when I cleaned it out) but they all looked very similar.

I feel you brother, they are by for the best boots I have ever owned.
Cool name. I too work 6 days a week but as maintenance on a farm. I was looking at the thorogood boots. Have you worn the same pair of boots for 3 years? I really want a thorogood boot but they make them sound weak with all the man made material.
Thorogoods all day
If you want a quality American work boot that will not destroy your foot or wallet with long break in…get a Thorogood.
I love how informative this channel is
I agree he does such a great job and it helps so much.
Red wing 6 inch wedge Irish setter. Nuff said
@@sloppyjonuts9162 that doesn't explain anything
I can see why this video was delayed. The graphics and editing on this is great and super helpful!
More of these comparisons, please. They are an absolutely awesome resource to the viewer in terms of identifying pros and cons.
I am a person that does not need such boots, but I loved watching this entire video, so thorough!
It looks like "The Rona" hasn't thrown you for complete loop. How are you feeling overall?
I've worn Danner, Timberland, and Sorel for boots and New Balance 990 series for 20 years. The 990's are the most comfortable, supporting shoe I've found.

Whites used to custom fit boots. Worth it
Great choice!

This is the most logical comparison of boots. EXCELLENT

@Christian Vaughn Well yeah, but the way it is used is different than a classic footwear.
Hiking boots would be interesting as well (although prob not as different in. Instruction as climbing boots).

I keep waffling between the Red Wings and the White's. This video/series was awesome
I just went with the whites before watching this video. I hope they hold up to hard use like thorogoods and redwings
Awesome video! The analysis was extremely well thought out and presented. Thank you. I’m going out the Thursdays
I love Toaster. Strudel, too. And the shoe and boot guy is okay to listen to while I wait for Toaster’s cameos!
I’d be interested to see a iron ranger type series. I feel like that new patagonia Buffalo boot would give red wings a run for their money.
The Nick’s Americana is the boot to beat I think
Iron Rangers look 10 times better.
This is a good idea same brands as this vid in the toe cap 6inch boots
I'm behind this idea

Dang it! Looks like I'm buying some White's and some Thursday's lol
Looking forward to having you a part of the Team :)
Just picked up a pair of Thorogood boots two days ago exactly the same ones that you are talking about today
I need steal toed and parents always went with red wing. So I went with 8” 2414. I absolutely love them except the super soles don’t last long at all so had them resoled with the vibran sole. 2 years old worn every single day work or not. I am a cabinet maker.
picked myself up a pair of thorogoods, thanks for the informative videos!
Super well put together video. Very informative and straight to the point. Can't wait to see how the boots hold up after a year.
In your other videos I recall you saying that the polyurethane soles are more comfortable but do not last as long as the rubber on the redwings.
I choose my Skechers Pro Series Moc Toe work boot. Around $100. Mine was $60. Great leather, sole and it's Goodyear Welted.
Congratulations on your hyper good video
Wes, you made an amazing stuff.
What a great video. I bought Redwings 2 years and was always worried I’d overpaid. I love them and now know they are worth it. Keep the videos coming
Did they break in easy or hard?
Love the graphic breakdowns
Fantastic video! Thank you for your hard work I’ve been wearing work boots for thirty years and what you just went through is on this video is the best advice you could have ever given to someone
It the being of this series I was a little doubtful but you hit it out of the park !
This is a top video. Highly informative and straight to the punch!
Could you do some reviews of Double H and Carolina boots? I’ve been interested in seeing what the internal construction of these boots are like.
I was engaged for the whole video!! Looking forward to the next series. Still Red Wings for me, but I am liking those Thursday’s 👌🏽
You gotta cover some of the more underground Japanese labels Visvim, Yuketen, and Kapital are all definitely worth taking a look at!
Bought a pair of Thorogoods. Felt great the second I tried them on. Love'm.
Absolutely the best boot channel out there, thank you!
Loved this breakdown / eval. The charts were very helpful to me. Great video.
Man I really appreciate all the time you put into this video!
This “low” price Whites is very interesting. In the website, it shows Goodyear welt, but in the video says storm welt. not sure what is true.
That was actually excellent!
Informative, with the information presented plainly, and, a very good recommendation on each boot for the purpose it will fit the easiest.
Thanks, man.
peace
Straight to the point with the info. Good video
Man... you are the scientist of boots!
I see why you put all these boots together I'm this category but you should do a review on the timberland pro moc toe sometime. I own thorogoods and the timbs and for the price I think the timbs are a very good value.
Thanks for the video...went with Whites...bummer they’re sold out...4-6 weeks before they deliver...
Love your videos Weston, get well soon!!!
I went with the best 875
Thanks for this video lots of great info I’m in the market for some of these boots. I think I’m going for the Red Wings it will be for casual wear I want something to last and don’t want deal with replacing something quick if it’s get damage. Thursdays are good boots but they don’t have the color that suits me.
Loving these comparison videos! I'm not looking to buy a moc toe boot but I enjoyed your white sneaker comparison video a lot so here I am.
Just purchased red wings today , wanted the whites but they are back ordered a month
Its nice to see multiple boots being tested. Wondering if you could do one lije this on steel toed boots of same brands. Thanks
I wanted a good pair of boots for the winter and bullshit work I do... I went with the White's. Thanks for all the info.
Excellent review and much appreciated! Carolina makes an American made moc toe boot which I think deserves a review. Thank you.,
