  • Fawlty Towers is debuting at London's Apollo Theatre with a special stage show adaptation of the classic British sitcom.
It isn't the first time that there's been a Fawlty Towers stage adaptation though, after there was a successful run in Melbourne, Australia from 2016 to 2020.
John Cleese said he was thrilled to bring British comedy Fawlty Towers to UK theatres for the first time and was delighted with the cast involved in the production.
The Fawlty Towers stage show will be directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, whose past work includes Only Fools and Horses: The Musical and Monty Python Live.
The original Fawlty Towers ran on BBC for two series in 1975 and 1979, and starred John Cleese, Connie Booth, Prunella Scales and Andrew Sachs.

What do you think about Fawlty Towers being remade as a stage show?

I'm shuddering here. It's got a nostalgic appeal for sure - and the best place for nostalgia is in the past. Some of the things, and Sybil's smoking and Basil's sexism and misogyny come to mind immediately, are probably taboo in this day. Another point I'd make is that it was the ACTORS more than the roles that made Fawlty Towers what it is. You just have to look at the dismal American attempts to replicate it - and one of them starred Bea Arthur. You got to be really bad to make Bea Arthur fail.

Eric Idle said that John Cleese once told him he'd do anything for money. Eric offered him 'A pound to shut up' and Cleese took it.
