    If you know your animation looks bad, but are not really sure why, then check out the video and maybe it'll help you with some tips and observations. I go into the problem of floaty animation - when your character's movements look floaty, like there's no weight to them - as well as issues with timing and spacing , over animating, and a bunch of other stuff.

    Repeat after me: REFERENCE ISN'T CHEATING :-)
    In my projects, I always thought that referencing or "coping from life" was cheating - boy was I wrong! Life is the best mentor.
    Great video!

      Absolutely! A lot of people seem to feel the same way and I wish they realised it makes you much better if you use reference ! The best animators use reference !

    The “bobbing heads” section made me laugh. I admit as a new animator I am guilty of this as I work through different workflows. The main thing that trips me up is timing and spacing and using reference that I acted out. I identify the key poses but once I move out of blocking it still feels floaty. However if I speed up the animation by 1.5 or 2x the normal speed then it looks a LOT better. This seems odd since I’m shooting reference in 24 fps and animating at the same frame rate.
    I subbed to the channel and going to go through your other videos. Thanks for sharing the tips and for taking the time to make the videos.

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you could relate to some of these ! I was definitely guilty of a few when I started out. Timing and spacing is difficult actually, because as you've observed yourself, some stuff that looks right in real life, looks wack when animated . Animation is that fine balance of mimicking what's real but also including exaggerations and tweaks that help translate that reality into something our brains can process as looking right when it's not actually, if it was being done by a real person.

    What do you think about Chester Sampson's workflow? He made "animation cheet sheet" video. He adds a lot of keyframes between poses. He uses tween machine tho. Maybe it's redundant?

    I'm making an animation in Blender and I feel like the "too many keyframes" thing probably applies to me. My personal problem is that reading rotation on the graph editor is either really difficult with Quaternion rotation, or I use XYZ rotation but I have to learn about gimbal lock and the mess that comes with it. Do you have advice for overcoming either one of these problems?

      you know, I was typing out a reply to this comment and it started getting kind of complicated, so I'm actually doing my next video on it so it can be explained properly

    Great vid and nice advice. If I could offer some constructive criticism I would say adding examples would add a hell of a lot(bad and good examples), not very exciting to just watch someone sitting and talking.

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the feedback. I hear you. I did have examples in there of the floating movement as well as blocking and what it looks like after the blocking once the in-betweens are added as well as an example of the graph editor, and bobbing heads, as well as shifty eyes... That's quite a few examples. Didnt think it was necessary to add in examples of the others because they are pretty self explanatory.

    • @imraanzaindeen1389
      @imraanzaindeen1389 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RobynO_O I mean more as it was 95 percent talking with 5 percent examples, much more enjoyable to watch examples, even if they are basic examples of things you should know. Think of the person viewing not having as much experience as you do. The video works as is and its great, dont get me wrong. There's potential to push it way further and I just thought I should mention what I felt it lacked. With Fair use you can just use examples from movies already out there as I know it would be a ton of work to do just for examples.
