Im a beginner animator and this video made so much sense to me, i am now understanding how t make moves not so floaty. My main issue seems to be the speed of animation. i am making an animation now that is 60fps (final render). In Blender when i preview it, it looks slower than the final rendered animation. My 60fps animation is really fast and i have to slow it down in post production. Animation is a lot of fun but time consuming to get good at- i still have much to learn.
This is a valuable video to me. Thank you for adressing a common issue that in my opinion doesn't get discussed enough, and for doing so in a practical and helpful manner ^^
These tips work in two ways. This video helped me understand how to make movements LESS floaty and it helped me understand how to make movements MORE floaty when that is what I need. Like for something actually floating. Thanks!
Interesting that you mention that your friend works in a way where he finds that refineing the floatiness works for him, I work in a similar fashion and thought that doing such a thing was very bad. However you've talt be theres different methods and as long as the floatiness gets eliminated it can work 😄
thank you for this ! it is really helpful for me. will try to remember all you said. You explained it so clearly and in full of passion. I love your style. awesome !
The one issue with this video is that, it tells but does not show. Not sure if you just dont have access to the necessary tools I.E. Maya, Toon Boom, etc. but in an instructional video about animation there needs to be some samples of animation. Beyon that what is being said its perfectly fine.
Time is the issue mostly. But if there ever is a redo of this video, it will have animated examples. I have one about common beginner mistake's in the works which will have animated examples. :D
lol i have just started using source filmmaker and everything u said I've done :P heeehee....i feel like the kid with his hand stuck in the cookie jar but i didnt expect to get caught and told off so quickly :) thanks for your great tips
i cant help but laugh omg! this is exactly my problem ahhahah well I asked our director for help and he said the overall problem is this floaty issue that's why I'm here researching and looking for more ways to improve it XD he gave me tips on what to do etc too ^^ omg everything your saying is true and your exactly how i see my works ahhahahaha XD thank you for this video
The floaty impression doesn't come from more or less frames. You can have long and slow motions with many frames, but it's important that they have purpose and fit to the size of the object or character. Big things move slower, smaller things move a lot faster. A common animation mistake is to have a character wobble back and forth with his whole body arms moving up and down to create the illusion of breathing. But the breathing happens almost only through the chest. The pose is also really important. If the upper arm is lifted for too long or without purpose it looks like there is water there lifting the arm up.
How was your Study at the Film-school in Baden - Württemberg? I am thinking about studying there. Sorry for the bad english, I am just a german boy. And you do an amazing job. Your Finn
Many of my viewers have actually improved their animation using my advice in this video. Just changing your mindset to more purposeful motions can reduce floating a lot and it's difficult to give before and after examples for that as they require a completely new animation. But the real reason why there are no examples: It would have delayed this video even more. Yes, I want to make a new version some day with examples, but I would animate them myself or for third-party content get permission for every single one as I don't want people to feel exposed. I am already afraid enough on stepping on people's toes with the 11SecondClub critiquing. In those live streams you can see a lot of examples and while there is no fixed version shown, I give lots of tips and draw over notes.
Not sure how far you watched, but I demonstrate a lot of things acting them out in live action. I would like to do more animated examples, but unfortunately they are very time intensive to create. We might have an exploration of the 51 animation exercises with examples though... We will see :) I politely disagree that talking about motion isn't helpful. Many interviews with great masters (you can find some on this channel) don't have animated examples and yet there is so much you can learn from listening to them... or reading about it. The Illusion of Life is mostly text, but it's full of very helpful insights.
The introduction confirms my worst fears but instills the greatest comfort at the same time.
your floaty movement at the start made my day ahahahha
:-)
14:27 "Theres *stuff* going on there."
Most accurate description of animation I have heard, ever. ^^
id never thought about it like that before :P jkjkjk

FINALLY. A video that explains what is a floaty animation instead of making a thing float/fly. Thank you for making this.
I am glad it was helpful :D Good luck with your own animations! ^^

really interesting, should rewatch this from time to time.
Great advice! One of my main problems is floaty animation and this really helped understand what I was doing wrong.
This was so informative. A good explanation as to why that Float happens, good, simple, examples to follow and understand.
Thanks, you are awesome 💯
Glad it was helpful! :D Good luck with the animating.
it's one of the best videos explaining that painful problem this good. thank you so much for the sincerity
This video encompasses every single thing that I didn't like about some of my animations that I just couldn't put my finger on!
now im watching this over and over, your intro is hillarious XD also shows exactly why the person watching this is here XD
Found this was very helpful, you have gift for explaining things in a logical way.
What a fantastic compliment, thank you very much! Glad the video was helpful to you. :)
thank you! i believe this video will be relevant forever!

This channel is gold, thank you so much
Thank you for your kind comment! It's really appreciated! ❤
Settle. Very important. Sehr gut. Danke meine herr.
13:50 if you want to fix that then you need to isolate the rotation of the shoulders from the FK controller
A great lecture, but no examples. :(
You give an excellent explanation here!
Love this. Sharing it with my Facebook group
Awesome! Great to hear :)
just found this channel, some great videos so thank you!!
This is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.
Me: Floaty Moment? What exactly does that mean?
*Watches first 10 seconds of the video*
Me: Oh, yeaha. I know exactly what you're talking about haha.
This was extremely valuable for me, thank you!
17:21 don't know why but that sudden arm rotation scared the hell out of me
Haha x) elbows are weird. It might be the only joint that can give you a motion that looks like 360 degrees rotation. 🤔
thank you for this ! it is really helpful for me. will try to remember all you said. You explained it so clearly and in full of passion. I love your style. awesome !
Would you talk about how figure drawing skills improve our animation?
Or does it even have something to do with it ?
nour el din Abu khalifa Figure drawing helps hand and eye cordination, structuring your lines faster and overall animation structure
Even if youre using 3d, it helps you to understand the body better, how it moves, and where the weight is.
Very informative...
Thank you
i love your videos! keeping that! everyone who learns animation should learn movement/acting
You got a proper background! Yay!

Fantastic information. Thank you for sharing.

the last part is hilarious
So one way that causes it in 3d anim is basically shortcut tweening.
Excellent video thank you. By the way 20 drunk guys dislike this video🤣
How to avoid down pose in inbetween of two key pose
Hi sir, would request can you make a video on animating creature using bouncing ball... (layout and blocking ) thankyou
good video.. but would help so see actual animation examples
Thank you soooo much!
thank you so much sir. 😊
Hi, Wth is Anticapation, Umm, Break Down, And Ah, The Other One, Could You please Point Me To A Video You Made About These Please? Thanks!
yeah but to avoid floaty animation how much frames would you put it because if you put it to minimum its gonna look like its teleporting :/
