@@Saeroye It’s crazy Madrid fans were saying City would panic. We’ll hit City on counters (Why TF) would you chose to sit back against City. The confidently said they’ll beat city as they did to Liverpool, Barca and Chelsea away and use counter attack to destroy city
Not always. Managers like Hansi Flick and Zidane could have burried this Man City team without any big issue. It's just Ancelotti always struggles against possession because he does not train to have possession on his own team for periods of time. Zidane's Madrid did know to play possession and counter attacking football and could easily switch between those, same as Hansi's Bayern, Ancelotti on the other hand got destroyed multiple times in a row by the worst Barca squad in history, a team which Zidane didn't let them win once for years, including times they had Messi and Suarez in their team.
For those who have watched football for the past decade know that Ancelotti looks better than he actually is. This Man City team was not invincible, the first match Real could have easily scored 3-0, however Ancelotti sucks when opponents play possession ball, he got destroyed vs Barcelona multiple times, destroyed against City and many more times during these past 2 seasons. Zidane with this current Real team would have won these last 2 UCLs without any big issue. (Zidane's matches against City in 2020 were much closer despite having a much worse team, and was 1 goal away from the 2021 final despite having 69 injuries and basically played with his reserves in UCL knockouts) Well played City, they deserve the UCL this year
@@blackbox1024 much worse team huh? Let’s see, Zidane had Courtois, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy, Modric, Casemiro, Valverde, Isco, Benzema, Vini jnr. Subs : Bale, Vasquez, Jovic, Areola, Militao, Marcelo, Kroos. How on God’s green earth is this a “much worse” team than what Madrid currently have? Madrid fans will ALWAYS find an excuse and never just agree that City are better and Pep is a tactical genius. Yes yes, Madrid has 14 UCL trophies, we know that by now but that was not a “much worse” team in any way, shape or form.😂
The first half of this match reminded me a lot of the Barcelona vs Madrid game back in 2010 where Barca thrashed them 5-0. That first half by City was just something else. Like I have constantly said for years now, Pep is the GOAT of managers. Tactically, the man is light years above the rest. Present and future managers will study Pep's work and use it as a blueprint. Football will remember Pep fondly. He's undeniably the GOAT.
@La Niko like I'm just amazed at people calling Pep the goat when he has a lot of star signings. Like what else is he supposed to do but succeed. Now compare him to Maurinho, who has always found a way to make trash from trasure.
@laniko_12093but we can also say the same about PSG, Spurs, Chelsea, Bayern... The difference is that Pep is also a curator and chooses players who will fit in the team, while other teams only buy players because they are ''quality players''.
@Israel Edeaghe Jose always had great teams. Porto was a big team back then compare to now. Inter Milan had world class squad back then. Inter squad was even better than this current one. At Chelsea he splashed money back in 2004 and at Man united same story. He now at Roma because he just trying to save his career
every player in Man City team are tactically brilliant. everyone is like a chess players, and Pep is their grandmaster. their movement on and off the ball as individual and as a team is unparalleled. their opponents just shell shocked and don't know how to react.
The growth of Stones is simply amazing. And When Pep says Bernardo Silva is the best in the world at what he does ( pressing players n closing spaces with just few movements) he wasn't lying. That guy could go days just giving a 100 percent everytime. Alvarez just shows that he can literally start for most teams out there with how clinical he is and how good he is defensively too , Soo much room for growth. Then we get to Kyle walker. Vini should've watched the match ENG va FRA to know how good he is 1 v 1
The moment you sit back against city, you are asking for trouble, especially in the etihad. City will ruthlessly press you ,disrupting your own gameplay flow. That's why madrid never found a way to break city from containing them in their own half.
When Madrid fans said they’re gonna defend deep and hit on counter against city, I knew it was more of a disadvantage for their team. I’ve seen several teams do this against City but they end up suffering so bad. Trying to hit on counters against City might be a nightmare as City’s defence has become stronger than ever as everyone tracks back anytime we lose the ball. City also fight really hard to win the ball back in dangerous possessions as we saw that in the 4th goal. I’m so glad pep learnt from his previous errors and turned city into a beast💙💙
@@DrakeDHDerr tbf mate we were good at dealing with counter attacks last season too s real madrid, the only issue was Fernandinho (bless him) wasn't ready for Vinicius but walker dealt with him perfectly. What was the real difference this time, was our confidence on the ball and not making or inviting any mistakes, we seemed so level-headed where that cost us last season; Real Madrid flourish vs teams that struggle with the pressure and force them into loads of mistakes... the main reason we won today was because the players were ready, mentally prepared. Pep mentioned this too and as mentioned in this video, city's risky and confident tactical approach was a result of this. A calm, unfazed mentality, which we also saw from coming back from a goal down at the Bernabeu, is what we're gonna need in the final.
@@sfb4144 Well deserved final for City, but Real shot themselves in the foot by having a manager who doesn't know how to defeat possession football, in terms of quality there's not much difference between the two teams.
Agreed. Madrid just had to trade blows from the start and use that pressure in their favor. I think Madrid just got caught off guard with that press. It was really a surprise attack and also Rudiger should have started over Militao or even Carvajal and leave Militao against grealish for another nice battle.
@@0x______224 Ancelotti does not know how to defeat possession football, otherwise he would have not lost all those matches against the worst barca squad in history when Zidane defeated Barca for almost 3 years without any loss despite him having a much worse team than Ancelotti and Barca having Messi.
@@blackbox1024 I’m not talking about ancelotti, I’m talking about individual performances. Absolutely terrible performance from every madrid player other than courtois.
Well, Man City proved in previous seasons they tend to choke at the last moments in CL and clash out. Don't underestimate Inter. Win the final first before celebrating. Man City still gotta prove they can win CL. Don't be like Arsenal, overhyping their team and celebrate too early.
@@BloodRedLFC But that's not what he's doing is he? He talked about how good City are at the Etihad. They're also receiving praise because everybody knows how good Madrid are at any stadium in the UCL and they got demolished. His comment wasn't that hard to comprehend ☠
@@david91lvb Thank you for explaining. I'm not underestimating Inter in the slightest. Hell you could put Wrexham there instead of them and I'd still be nervous. I'm just glad we got such a splendid revenge after last year's heartbreak.
It was obvious that city were gonna dominate possession and create scoring chances but what came out as a pleasant surprise was how they completely shut down madrid. For me the clean sheet is much more rewarding than the four goals (not taking away anything from our attacking unit). #notinmylifetime 💙💙💙💙💙
if it wasn't for ancelloti's poor tactics, he would deserve a 10. I don't know what ancelotti was thinking leaving an attacking midfielder (modric) and a wing back as the defence in real's back left, with the occasional help from another midfielder (kroos), 1-2 midfielders and a wingback can't solo defend man city down the side and were always outnumbered on that side or when cutting inside from it by at least 1 if not 2 players. And taking off modric for rudiger when losing by 2 goals???
This match showed that football tactics has to evolve. Pep showed the importance of changing tactics with each passing season. With all due respect to Ancelotti and Zidane, Real don't need them, they need a young coach like Naglesmann or Alonso.
Madrid have no thinkers kind of players . Vin and Benzema they are not indirectly wen they hve ball ,u know b4 the game that Vin he just run with ball and he is fast thats all ,just like Sterling,Le Roy unlike City De Bruyne,Gundo,Rodri , Bernardo ,Akanji ,Stones,Marez and Grelish these guys are unpredictable their game mentality is something else
Man city has eliminated Real Madrid in 2019/20 as well. People however will remember this one more because they humiliated Real Madrid beyond comprehension
In the first leg...pep just acted that he can't compete with RMA....he saw their lackings and decided to hide those lackings for the second leg... Pep actually controlled both matches.... that's heritage❤
I’m happy that he learned from his past mistake against real that he subbed Mahrez for the defender but this game he subbed his player to all attacking players even already 3-0. Against Real, never stop scoring until end of the game.
It really strikes me that hardly any names are mentioned in the comments. In fact, no one stood out above the rest and no one underperformed. Compliments to the whole team
Same vs the game against bayern. Hargreaves said it vs Leipzig, when City are playing this well, all 11 being on top of their game, no one's beating them
Real Madrid has no identity. They just put in players and tell them to go and do what they know. That's why Vinicius Jr. was explaining tactics to Ancelotti after Bernardo Silva first goal.
@@tumpalechasukwa1265 not just levels but the way city play did not happen over night. Pep has been preparing this team for seasons to be able to adjust and outthink the opposition. It’s just only coming together. This was a project in the making. I can’t imagine how many hours of drills most likely went into this, from the formation, movement and drilling scenarios into his players head for them to notice even the slightest changes to the oppositions shape. You obviously need to have players with high IQ like KDB, Gunda and Silva in order to facilitate this but as FMS pointed out even with lesser competent players like Akanji and Walker once you drill these guys long enough, games become like templates and all they need to do is remember what was drilled in training to react. Look at city’s performance at the beginning of the season to now, clearly everyone has study the textbook from end to end.
Did anyone Notice How Brilliant Stone was against RM and Bayern. His DM play making and Carrying the ball forward to give him space and timely pass it to his AM. Is just World Class. NO other CB cannot even dare to play at such level how stones opporate in that congested Area. DAMN! He is the reason the Mid is hard to man mark. The guy is so underrated that his name is not even mentioned by anyone even in National team Harry foolish maguire take the highlight spot and In City other take the highlight spot.
Xavi dismantled Ancelotti too (not a barca fan). It just shows that a team that relies on old managers cannot have sustained success. Zidane would have walked over Barcelona these 2 seasons, and probably knock out City too
@@blackbox1024 why are you spamming Zidane comments everywhere like City didn’t eliminate his team from 2020 champions league ? City won Real Madrid in both legs 2020.
I feel like one of the keys to city's attack was the way the handled passing, normally city utilizes quick one touch passesmoving the ball back and forth left to right etc, in this game i saw city holding onto the ball just for a few miliseconds, they knew that Madrid was trying to anticipate passing lanes and saw them trying to jump into the lanes to cut off or steal the ball for potential counter attacks. By holding onto the ball for those extra miliseconds caused Madrid players to make their moves and when city didn't pass at that moment caused Madrid players to be completely out of position to defend. This opened up huge amounts of space for city players to dribble forward with the ball exploiting the open space for those more dangerous passes into the box or on the wings. You could clearly see Benardo or Kevin running forward with the ball forcing Madrid defenders to move forward to try and stop these runs. Karim and Vinicius weren't always having the time to come back after their anticipated passing lanes couldn't be exploited. These vacuums in pitch space were the difference today for sure.
Pep actually found another "meta" formation in football with this 3-2-4-1. He tried different combinations in the last few years when he had Cancelo and Walker as LB RB going into the center of the midfield essentially making them inverted full backs playing as defensive midfielders. I think he always loved playing with 3 at the back but never had such polyvalent players like Akanji, Ake or Stones who play as CB, CDM or LWB perfectly. But in 2023 we saw that this formation was his go to most of the time. And it really shows his vision and impact on the players. I think everyone thought that Akanji was an ok CB at BVB but for sure not an world class player, people thought that Stones will always be a bench player for Dias or Laporte and Ake was just a rotation option. Can't wait to see what he will do next. He will be if he isn't already the best manager to grace the game.
They werent much more dominant than last season's tie. The differences were: 1. City's personnel in rest-defence make them stronger on transitions 2. Relying on variance to save you when getting dominated by definition doesnt work most of the time. Banking on stormtrooper aim from the opponents and hitting the jackpot by scoring 3 goals from 1xg of chances isnt sustainable no matter how good your players are, and that it sometimes bounces that way for a few games in a cup run is neither unique to Real Madrid, nor is it some secret brilliant plan you have control over.
City was the better team last year and this year too. The main difference was Real relies on individual performance and last year their key players (Modric, Vinicius, Benzema, Valverde and others) were in top form, this year apart from Vinicius and Courtois, no other player has performed even close to their last season level.
@@blackbox1024 Didn't help the approach from Real Madrid in this game without the ball for the first half hour was really bad. Left Rodri totally free once City progressed from their own third, Kroos as 6 in an ancient 3 man midfield, Camavinga on the left rather than moving Alaba there and playing Rudiger, etc.
I started watching football again few months ago and Man City instantly became one of my favorite teams. Guardiola built a gem. But my favourite thing about this team is Bernardo's dog name
Man City is unmatched in the football world right now. Vinicius has contributed the most to Real's run in the champions league, but unfortunately for them, City had the perfect counter for Vini. Walker did exceptionally well and his pace and physicality were too much for Vini to create any scoring chances. Pep learned a lot from the first leg and tweaked his tactics to perfection in order to dismantle Madrid. Overall, it was a great day in the office for City.
Vini has always played against 2-3 opponents, and when he has an invisible teammate in Benzema it's obvious he will not be able to break the defence on his own, not even players like Mess and CR7 in their prime could have done it consistently. Real Madrid had Valverde, Benzema, Modric, Carvajal, Mendy, Maguire Militao all out of form this season and they paid the price, should have been knocked out much earlier though.

@@patrikhencz5106 Find me a coach who has defended the UCL successfully ? Apart from Klopp none of the current managers have managed to qualify to 2 consecutive UCL finals, Zidane won 3 of them in 3 years. Was very close to his 4th in 2021 had it not been for having 75% of his team injured.
How is zidane better than pep?tactically or just ignorance from people who watched football yesterday...ur zidane is not even mentioned when we mention greatest coaches in history. Pep,alex ferguson, ancelloti, mourihno, wenger, etc
Pep Guardiola is a mastermind. He completely destroyed Madrid. They had no chance, they were all over the place. As a City fan I enjoyed seeing them crumble especially after what they did to us last season.
bullshit, players are much more important, why is it that the same people, the same position yet last time it's 1:1 but today its 4:0? Camavinga is dumb and Akanji pocketed Rodrygo and Vini.
As a Barca fan I still have to show my respect to my former team coach Pep Guardiola he have the master mine to set dangerous game plan against his biggest opponents . I really like how he overpower this strong Realmadrid team so dangerously he nominated the midfield and drog out Realmadrid defense so crucial. It is a super magnificent performance they put out against Carlo Ancelotti men. This season Manchester City executed their level to be top form I give them a 100% thumps up for advancing their level against Realmadrid to go through the champions League final.🏴🏆🥇⚽💪🌍🤯
Even though on paper City is much better than Inter, i wouldn't be surprised if the match is very tight or even goes to extra time. Real Madrid is not strong in any way this season, most of the key players out of form, lost their balance with letting Casemiro go, they play without a CDM and a natural left back. If anything the clasicos showed that Ancelotti as a coach is clueless against possession based teams, individual players got the results they needed last year but they couldn't perform this year. In the first leg City showed lots of vulnerabilities, the match could have easily gotten 3-0 for Real, in the second leg they dominated but a totally disorganized RM team who didn't even try to run allowe that, Inter will play Mourinho's football in the final and it will be difficult to break that with possession football only.
I think their aerial superiority in defence with Real’s long balls, winning nearly all the 50-05’s and challenges and the 1v1s on the flanks were the key. Though have to note, that Madrid were really poor on the ball yesterday.
City played with Madrid let's be honest, but that was in part because the ones who usually don't fail as they are Modric and Kroos did. I don't remember a more horrible match of both.
Pep adopted this 3-2-4-1 and has been on an unbeaten run since and as he fine tunes this style of play unleashing a fearsome front 5, it will be a while for other teams to catch up
The Real midfield (Modric, Kroos, Valverde) was absent, just like the first half in Madrid. But now ManCity took their chances finally. Over 2 matches it should have been 8-2. Ancelloti could not correct it. Time for a complete new midfield in Rea
During the 1st Leg, Real could have burried the match 3-0 easily had it not been for Benzema's off form misses and City's illegal goal but the second leg just exposed how bad Ancelotti really is against teams that play tiki taka, he lost 3 matches in a row this season against the worst barca squad in history, got dominated last year against PSG, City, Barca and other teams that played possession football, was just lucky to have some players in top form who turned the ties around and won him the UCL. Zidane would have burried this City team from the first match
Perhaps the most important take away for real is how exposed their core of aging players: modric, kroos, and benzema. They were also off the ball 3/4 of the time, and the few touches benzema got were exceedingly sloppy. End of an era for sure, but with city’s pace, it’s time to start players like asensio and tchouameni. I love modric but I think his time has come
This match was a beautiful tactical masterclass by Pep. The first leg showed how dangerous Camavinga could be for Madrid. Pep knew that Camavinga is a natural CM and not a LB, and he exploited that. City bullied Camavinga for the whole match.
IMO there's not so much 'wrong' with Madrid in this match. They're just overrated. Their form had been shocking in La Liga and the reason they won last year just because Benzema and Courtois was like super clutch. The media hyped Real so much as 'England Killers' without taking context that the team they face like Liverpool and Chelsea were bad this year that even mid table teams could beat them quite easily and they actually lost in chances created in every single one of them last year. The narrative was this is a close match or something, while the reality City is just far too good for them and it shows when Benzema, Rodrygo, or Valverde couldn't score outbox bangers, they're Real-ly screwed. I admit i even was taken by the hype that i predicted it would be 50-50 chance. It seems i was wrong. 😅😅😅. I'm an Inter fan and i hope we will win this year. I think we only have like 25% chance to win and given our form, it could be 30-35%. Anyways if City win, it'll be alright as well.
No they aren't the problem was playing with Camavinga and Kroos in that positions, the last year was the same with Kroos. When I saw the Xl I was knowing that City will crush Madrid. Kroos in that position is simply a suicide. The better moments in the tie of Madrid were when Camavinga went to the midfield.
The tactic was simple: Overload the last third of the oppo in the middle, two wingers playing wide and quick switch from attack ti defense by two main midfielders. Simple. The fact that technically City had one defender but everytime they lost possession Walker would quickly move back together with stones and Rodry means that City are hard to score against .
RM should've looked into low block tactics. Study what Brighton does. Pep hates to play against team like these. Being able to start attack from deep within is really valuable against high pressing teams.
@@draoicht22 Hell nah! Have you seen how many times Couirtouis just kicked the ball into midfield instead of passing to near defenders. They lost the ball EVERY TIME after long kicks by Goalkeeper. This was clearly a settting by Ancelotti.
@@draoicht22 Actually, Ancelotti's tactical plan was based on containing Haaland but then Pep had a completely different idea. Pep basically used Haaland as a decoy to create space for City's wingers. Haaland's presence in the centre attracted a lot of attention from Madrid's players and they over-compensated to try and nullify Haaland. So as a result of the over-compensation, Madrid left acres of space which other City players exploited.
Firstly Real Madrid were outplayed and outsmarted by pep's tactical genius and thinking. Valverde, Kroos, Modric and Benzema were too slow for the interchanging in the Middlefield, upfront and in the half spaces...
How Pep Guardiola managed to destroy Real Madrid's midfield. The keys? Stone's role. And Rodri. In the defensive phase, Stones was another centre-back, forming a line of 4. But in the offensive phase, Stones was close to Rodri's position, acting as a double pivot. Thus, Rodri was released and could mobilize and have more freedom to play. In turn, when Stones went up, the City centre-backs had up to 6 options for the first pass: there was always someone free. It was a 3-6-1 in the offensive phase, which allowed City to always have superiority in midfield. Rodri was the footballer who made the most passes (113) and the one who covered the field the most (12 km). Masterclass Pep.
Respect should also be given to the fans that turned up at the Etihad and made the atmosphere electric for the whole 90 minutes. Say what you want, THIS for me was the main difference last night
Great video! Perfectly explained things I noticed. It's now clearer why Rodri had the ball and one or two passes pinched from him a few times in the opening first half. City adjusted quickly though. I can't speak highly of Pep enough. My all time favorite manager! Hopefully he and the team get the much deserved win in the final.
Johan must be happy in heaven's to see how much far pep has come it would be astounding if Xavi can meet the standards of these absolute legends as a coach for the legacy 💙❤️
I was expecting City to go through by pure guess, but man, I wasn't expecting them to do what they did to Madrid yesterday. It was for sure one the most dominating performances I've witnessed with my own eyes in this sport, such an amazing tactical domination by the blues.
Ohh Carlo, Carlo...man of his own world and principles. He should have seen that coming last match. City overloaded midfield and then stretched madrid defence from side to the other. It was obvious even before the game that, Madrid had to play with 3 central defenders Alaba, Rudiger and Militao. Wingbacks Camavingwa and Carvajal. Midfield must be Tchouameni, Kross, Modric and Vini and Benzema. This might have helped them to shape in 4--4-2 as well.
My expectation was to have Rudiger and Militao in CD, Alaba as LB, It's obvious City was overloading the midfielder.. A midfield that has the energy of Camavinga would be a different one. And Bernardo would not have it easier with Alaba on him. That would have limited City threat to Grealish vs Carvajal. Bottom line, City was tops. Period!
I felt rudiger and touchameni should have played in midfield rudiger has done a job there before with chelsea then when man city are with the ball he slots into defence as a CB making it a back 5. Valverde, kross and touchameni act as a screen for the defence. Madrid neede to close the half spaces and double mark grealish and bernado silva
You clearly see there’s always a one player overload by a city player in the midfield which always causes our three midfields to drift from their initial positions and leaving huge spaces for that on overloaded city midfielder, i just don’t understand why Ancelotti couldn’t switch to a 4-4-2 with Tchuameni playing as a pivot alongside Toni Kroos, this would’ve given Real a more solid defensive bloc, but also they could rely on quick transitions or counter attacks to exploit City’s defense, it is well possible with the likes of fast players such as Valverde playing as a RM , Vinicius, and Benzema who knows the best runs to make, even with Modric getting upfront to make the most of the counter Pep is indeed a Genius, but Ancelotti really showed dumbness today smh
defense is for the weak, why would you blame Ancelotti when it's actually the quality and the performance of the players? Without good new transfer like Akanji and Haaland Pep wouldn't dare to play 3241, he would just do 433 and never use the full potential of their wingers and forward.
I just wonder how pep got to this strategy with having no attacking full back and no pacey winger. I think in the first leg they needed 1 v 1 success in wide areas. But Bernardo and grealish couldn't deliver it and had no support from their full backs. And of course Akanji and Walker are not good moving the ball, or making runs. So I thought maybe Mahrez and Foden were going to play. But in this match Bernardo was like Leo Messi and Grealish passed madrid players often. Pep is a Genius
I remember in you first video u tried to show how much Ancelotti dominated Pep well in this video seems like Pep also schooled you in his school of thought😂
As a Madridista, I think that City deserved the win and they deserve winning the treble. As for Madrid, we need an overhaul that includes the coach as well, the man's plan throughout the last couple of seasons was get the ball to Vinicius and ... insha'Allah.
Pep could just play dozens of tactics by mixing up Haaland, Grealish Foden, Silva, Mahrez, KDB, Gundogan and Alvarez, who are all brilliant all round players that could execute well. When you all are focusing Haaland, KDB scored two goals against Gunners, Gundogan two against Westham, and Silva also two goals against Real. For Inter, how to make a defence plan when you don't exactly know the ManC starting names in the coming Final ?
As a madridista, good game City. Just dominant. I knew Militao was a bad choice as the starter over Rudiger. But anyway, the way better team won, good luck in the final.
Ahh i love this match it's saved in my library as one of the top class matches of the decade everything was world class from hybrid pressing, versatility, role switching, pass accuracy, perfect block, prefect 1v1 outclassed by every aspect of the game pep keep proceeding our expectations 🔥🔥🔥
Great tactical analysis as always - the extra man from wide areas and the KDB dropping from the press were great moves by Pep - but more than anything City dominated because their wingers work their asses off the full length of the pitch and RM wingers did not put in the work required. Also, I was feeling soooo happy when I saw Rudiger was dropped for Militao - if Carlo just wanted to sit on the counter the rumored lineup should have been used with Carvajal-Militao-Rudiger-Alaba and keep Rodrygo on the bench, all City fans would have PSTD moment when Rodrygo came on late as super sub.
Been watching football for over 3 decades , have seen some insane dominance in games but I’d never witnessed anything remotely close to what city did to Real specifically in the first half….
This was a masterpiece from Pep. I was wondering how would city cope Vinicius Jr but man, Vinicius Jr couldn't even make a threatening attempt, not just Vinicius Jr but the whole Madrid team couldn't threaten City side once, not once. The decision to push out Stones and Walker occasionally was the right move.
I think the greatest feat by Pep wasn't even the goals. It's the fact that he was able to silence Vinicius, Benzema, Rodrygo, Modric; all were completely quiet. It took Madrid half an hour to even step foot into City's box with the ball. Ridiculous masterclass by Pep.
Also want to point out the importance of Rodri for City: he was always free to receive and distribute the ball, he must have been delighted to see he was never closely marked or closed down sufficiently to disrupt his passing game. To me, that's where Real lost the match, and they did not have any answer to this all game long. So man of the match: Rodri.
Definetly the greatest match Ive remember of a team vs Madrid in Champions league. Flawless collectively high pressing attacking and defending Pep has built a relentless team that for me was already the best since 2020 but defensively and resilience was worse and now they are ruthless 💙💙💙
Ancelotti picked the wrong starting XI. He picked Alaba, and Kroos signifying that he believed they could be effective in possession. He treated the home leg the same as the away leg. Big mistake. I would've elected for Valverde at RW in place of Rodrygo, Camavinga and Tchouameni in midfield alongside Modric, and a back four of Alaba, Rudiger, Militao, Carvajal. The priority should've been to suffocate, or physically overwhelm City to make them uncomfortable. City tend to overrun their opposition in the opening thirty minutes. Once the crowd were settled, and the nerves calmed, then it would be appropriate early in the second half(60th minute) to bring in the likes of Kroos, and Rodrygo to turn the tide of the fixture. Tactically, it's hard to fault Ancelotti. It's easy for us to see these tactical buildups from an online chalkboard. That being said, the minute he saw City playing with a back two of Dias and Akanji/Walker, he should've conceded them possession and dropped Benzema into the midfield to block passes to the more dangerous players. This would force Dias or Walker/Akanji to either play it long, which isn't their specialty(and even if they played a decent ball, you have to trust athleticism of Militao and Rudiger to clear the ball), or they would have to carry the ball forward. This would play into Madrid's hand. If you force Akanji or Walker to carry the ball deep into the opposition half, it takes them away from a possible counter. At that point, when say, Walker dribbles it into crossing range, I would've prioritized having Vinicius Jr stay on the halfway line to expose a direct weakness when the ball is recovered. Walker was the only player capable of flustering Vini. If he's been forced up the pitch, it negates his strengths, while forcing him to be a playmaker, which is his biggest weakness. If done successfully, this would've either provided consistent outlets when the ball was won, or force Guardiola to stay in a back three, and thus mitigate the amount of players offered in buildup play. Of course, this means allowing a player potentially free to cross the ball into the box, but you need to trust Rudiger and Militao to deal with that threat. You can't take everything away from City, so you must concede possession to the least dangerous players. There's more I could say, but this would've been my game plan for the first half. Once Madrid settled into the match, then you bring in the technical maestros against tired legs. Ancelotti's belief that his side could technically compete with City initially cost him the match. He should've elected for better legs, and more industry to fluster them, and to take the crowd out of the match.
Real Madrid tend to concede a lot of goals through headers (2 headed goals at Etihad last year, among many others throughout the season) Both of Real's CBs are short players who are very weak in Aerial duels, it is a no brainer to start Militao who alongside aerials he has very bad positioning against tall and fast players like Haaland. The game was lost the second he benched Rudiger.
Not starting with Rudiga was a mistake, he shut down Halland in the 1st leg and miltao was coming back from injury, but he still chose to play him, despite Rudiga playing very well in the 1st leg and Real Madrid players expecially the older once, had to deal with physical and mental fatigue for playing a lot of tough Matches, Manchester city has squad depth, that’s y they can perform without their players being fatigue due to rotation.
As a Real supporter, truly painful to watch. The tactics are undisputable but the energy and the passion with which City played were not met with the same effort. This is a great City moment, enjoy it guys. As for us, we will come back.
Real Madrid has no defense. All 4 of the starters are not RM level. - Alaba is a natural left back he plays in the center, he's not tall enough and very weak in aerials. - Militao, i can't think of another top class defender who has such bad positioning as him, he's also short and very weak in aerials. - Carvajal has given everything now he's old and very slow for today's intensity. - Mendy - The only player who can really defend yet he's most of the time injured. - Rudiger - the only player who can actually defend in CB is somehow not a started ahead of those 2 clowns.
He did because Vini had nobody to combine with. Benzema was invisible. Why didn't he stop Vini the first leg, he got dribbled left and right by Vini. The vital point was Benzema and Rodryg being totally out of the match and Camavinga having too many issues with SIlva.
I am a big fan of your tactical analysis. In fact, I do not disagree with your assessment. However, in my opinion one of the biggest problems for Real was the unfortunate night of Modric and Kroos, they are excellent holding the ball under pressure and supplying the attack, but last night it didn't just work. They both delivered less than what they used to. Thus, not sure that Carlo could've done much more than he did, maybe taking Rodrygo off and Benzema with Vini Jr in the defensive press but two of his best players didn't play well. Another issue was Camavinga who also didn't have a good time. Finally, City players all did a fantastic job, in my opinion especially Kevin who together with Modric are the two best MF in football atm
real had to start with 4 midfielders imo. instead of rodrygo, ceballos or chouameni, so to have more control in the midfield, instead of fast counter attacks we could have tried slower build up
Worldinsport: . The Spanish giants had so many tight games in this period, it would not be an accurate reflection to call it “domination” as they were often won by the smallest of margins, a penalty or offside decision given or not given and a couple of these ties could so easily have gone the other way. In their 7 knockout stage games including the final, City scored 18 goals and conceded just 3. They were trailing in just one of the games, falling behind at the Bernabeu. They then scored 5 unanswered goals across the tie to go through 5-1. Domination is felt more in the manner in which Champions League titles are won, rather than necessarily just being about how many of them are won

Anceloti's only plan was to play a through ball to vinicus.. but Walkar was too quick to intervene
It usually work even in the first leg. It's didn't at all this time
For those who have watched football for the past decade know that Ancelotti looks better than he actually is.

Do you think any of these players you mentioned will flourish at Man U or Chelsea? I don't think so. Their coach is the reason they look so good.

@@kizidelo You are forgetting the 3-peat Madrid of Zidane.
It's called la pausa
Every single city players was doing it
Pep actually found another "meta" formation in football with this 3-2-4-1.
The differences were:
1. City's personnel in rest-defence make them stronger on transitions

My prediction in the champions League final Inter Milan 0-3 Manchester City

I love modric but I think his time has come
That City in the 1st half was Crazy.
This match was a beautiful tactical masterclass by Pep. The first leg showed how dangerous Camavinga could be for Madrid. Pep knew that Camavinga is a natural CM and not a LB, and he exploited that. City bullied Camavinga for the whole match.
Even walker pocketed vini. Rodrygo was nowhere to be seen. Benzema, well he is old and mid anyways .
Pep makes players fulfill there full potential. That’s the difference
Real ain't overrated, they have won 5 out of the last 8 UCLs. The problem is that the team has aged and it's time for new era.
Tbh last season they got bailed out daily by benzema and vini. Otherwise their midfield and defense was very out of form.
@@radilev1996 they're downright overrated, enough with the history lesson.

Bravo. You can start taking over from Pep for the finals 😂
Simple. Get ready to be the next Real Madrid manager
RM should've looked into low block tactics. Study what Brighton does. Pep hates to play against team like these. Being able to start attack from deep within is really valuable against high pressing teams.

@@draoicht22 Actually, Ancelotti's tactical plan was based on containing Haaland but then Pep had a completely different idea. Pep basically used Haaland as a decoy to create space for City's wingers. mancity is an example for clubs that had the oil money but created class and charisma and promising future .
Kroos and Modric in two games against City 2023 was really hard to watch
I'm not a city fan but I love watching them play ... they deserve the league and champions league, they are the most prepared team for both
Respect should also be given to the fans that turned up at the Etihad and made the atmosphere electric for the whole 90 minutes. Say what you want, THIS for me was the main difference last night
This wasn't the biggest factor actually. In fact, U got to ask what was Ancelotti thinking???!
Cruyff = Total football = Pep
@@Khairan99 yes Barca is forever grateful to Johan 💙❤️ the attacking football we all love to watch gracias
I was expecting City to go through by pure guess, but man, I wasn't expecting them to do what they did to Madrid yesterday. It was for sure one the most dominating performances I've witnessed with my own eyes in this sport, such an amazing tactical domination by the blues.
citys off the ball movement is what makes them so good
Ohh Carlo, Carlo...man of his own world and principles.
Madrid can not play with 5 defenders.
You clearly see there’s always a one player overload by a city player in the midfield which always causes our three midfields to drift from their initial positions and leaving huge spaces for that on overloaded city midfielder, i just don’t understand why Ancelotti couldn’t switch to a 4-4-2 with Tchuameni playing as a pivot alongside Toni Kroos, this would’ve given Real a more solid defensive bloc, but also they could rely on quick transitions or counter attacks to exploit City’s defense, it is well possible with the likes of fast players such as Valverde playing as a RM , Vinicius, and Benzema who knows the best runs to make, even with Modric getting upfront to make the most of the counter
Pep is indeed a Genius, but Ancelotti really showed dumbness today smh
defense is for the weak, why would you blame Ancelotti when it's actually the quality and the performance of the players? Without good new transfer like Akanji and Haaland Pep wouldn't dare to play 3241, he would just do 433 and never use the full potential of their wingers and forward.
@@AlanNguyenMD defense for the weak?!!! Aight i guess Mourinho who has had success as a manager is weak then smh
this is it...good thinking Dave.
He only goes for Stats alone than play.
As a Madridista, I think that City deserved the win and they deserve winning the treble.
As for Madrid, we need an overhaul that includes the coach as well, the man's plan throughout the last couple of seasons was get the ball to Vinicius and ... insha'Allah.
Love how stones gets in plays progressive putting the press continuously to overwhelm Madrid
Ancelloti gets 2 only because 1 is reserved for lampard
😂
I was patiently waiting for this I really hope we win the UCL this time
As a madridista, good game City. Just dominant. I knew Militao was a bad choice as the starter over Rudiger. But anyway, the way better team won, good luck in the final.
Rudiger was the main miss. He was there for both legs of this year's UCL tie between Madrid and City, and he was the difference.
Vini jr. to Ancelotti : will you do some besides of lifting that eyebrow
🤣😂🤣😂
I've never seen a $900M team turn into $0 in a game. This was my first case. Dominance was brutal.
Close but Bernardo and KDB started the attack tho. That was much more crucial. Especially Bernardo that guys work ethic is unmatched
Graelish toyed with Real for 80 minutes like they were small kids ..
The quality of the video today is top notch.😊
Definetly the greatest match Ive remember of a team vs Madrid in Champions league. Flawless collectively high pressing attacking and defending
Pep has built a relentless team that for me was already the best since 2020 but defensively and resilience was worse and now they are ruthless 💙💙💙
Guardiola's greatest weapon is KDB Madrid didn't prepare for this
Simply put......they put too much emphasis on tracking haaland that they forgot that the other players are also deadly
not really. first match rudi practically stuck to haaland. this match he has more space.
That strike from kroos though 😢
First to comment, peps tactics was tremendous 🔥🔥
Not starting with Rudiga was a mistake, he shut down Halland in the 1st leg and miltao was coming back from injury, but he still chose to play him, despite Rudiga playing very well in the 1st leg and Real Madrid players expecially the older once, had to deal with physical and mental fatigue for playing a lot of tough Matches, Manchester city has squad depth, that’s y they can perform without their players being fatigue due to rotation.
Thank you for this. Big lessons in how to slice defences.
City dominated on the right because of Camavinga. I was surprised Carlo played him on that position he is not used to on such a serious game.
Kylie walker was vital, the man single-handedly stop vinicius, something that almost no did this season
He did because Vini had nobody to combine with. Benzema was invisible. Why didn't he stop Vini the first leg, he got dribbled left and right by Vini. The vital point was Benzema and Rodryg being totally out of the match and Camavinga having too many issues with SIlva.
I agree with you, vini was always alone, rodrygo and benzema disappeared both matches
Been waiting for this
I am a big fan of your tactical analysis.
City vs Inter will be special.
I am interested to see how Inter will face an extremely strong Man City side.
You don't know how long I waited for this one.
W analysis bro
ancelotti thought his brazillians were gonna save him
What machine Frankie De Jong playing the John Stones row😮
real had to start with 4 midfielders imo. instead of rodrygo, ceballos or chouameni, so to have more control in the midfield, instead of fast counter attacks we could have tried slower build up
Excellent analysis man, kudos!!
Worldinsport:
Salty
I feel bad for Courtois because he was amazing but his defense couldn’t help him
This man really did tactical analysis to this game😆
Goals at the Etihad this season:
Benzema: 0
Vini Jr: 0
Rodyrgo: 0
Rob Holding: 1
10:12😅 oooff, a bit harsh on ancelloti don't ya think?
I think the word "cruised'" is an understatement.
