      I have the Innova 5568 timing light. Works great, and it even has dwell reading. It’s not really useful for setting static timing or setting points, but it’s good for double checking the dwell angle when replacing points. I see the dwell function on my timing light to be more useful on a GM type distributor, where you can adjust point with engine running.

    Always a joy to visit... that Ruby Red is quite a color. Been looking for a "Bra" (for lack of a better word) for the back motor compartment but I haven´t found a vendor yet here in Porscheland. This is the third time I watch Franny do this and its always nice to see this tune-up work in progress. Stay happy and healthy! I got the crows foot as well in 24 mm (for the sender) as well as for seating the crank seal in the third piece, great...saves one more expensive Porsche tool!

    Franny, I thought I was Mr. Know-it-All about my 356C but learned why my 12-volt timing light didn't work on my 6-volt car from this video... I didn't use a ground wire between the 12-volt battery and the car as a "voltage reference" and now I will! This is the first "how-to" video on TH-cam I've used that wasn't some shade tree bubba using one hand to hold the cell phone camera using technical terms like "doo-hicky" and "thing-a-ma-jig" to describe his first time attempting a particular repair! I love your precise, correct terminology delivered in a relaxed and humble manner while never getting any schmutz on your pink sweater or catching your pearls on moving parts! You have a new fan... especially given the fact I own a 3.2 Carrera I work on myself too! P.S. I grew up in Loveland, just up the road and love the dry winter driving scenes, something I miss here in Seattle! Thanks! Darryl @ darrylsgarage.com

    or
    Do note a lot of these switches will leak at
    some point in their life, so extra sealing is needed to ensure they will not
    leak. Green (290) Wicking Loctite is a good start as it will wick down around the
    plastic where the outer steel body is crimped around the switch and also down
    into where the electrical terminals protrude from the plastic. Doing this
    in the inverted position and letting it set with the threaded portion of the
    switch pointed upwards for 12--24 hrs is the way this is achieved.
    Once the above has been done then wipe the
    switch clean with alcohol (no sprays please) and then use some adhesive sealant
    like YahmaBond, HondaBond or any adhesive sealant that is oil/gas resistant to
    the areas where trans oil can leak out as described above. Let this
    sit for 1--2 days and this will seal the switch nicely.

    Franny kills it again! I've used her other videos to replace spark plugs and wires in my 356, adjust valves, tune my carbs, replace the VW distributor with the correct Bosch version and set the static timing. I figured out how to clean up the rough idle on my own. Now the car is idling and running better than it ever has. Had a question; when I use the timing light, I'm getting dead-on 35 degrees at 3,000 RPM but my idle is 15 degrees at 1,200 RPM (I set the idle a bit high on purpose). Is that in the range and, if not, what do I do?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds about right... You won't see the static advance much above 900rpm. Probably best to set the static and just check the max at 3000rpm. Glad the videos are helpful!

I liked seeing the adjustable timing light being used as I never knew how they worked. I'm always amazed at how clean you keep your pink fleece, but the cars are pretty clean to start with.
    Quick question, what's with the black year designation on the license plate? It appears to have been added on top of the plate.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Judi, I believe that is an original plate from that year. Several states (Colorado included) will allow you to use an original plate to register the car. Ya know,... It might be an actual piece added to the plate. It isn't a sticker... I'll check next time I see the car again.

    Hi again Franny, (my auto spell changed your name to Frankie last time, sorry about that.) What brand and where did you find that cute swivel drive 3/8 ratchet? Keep up the good work! I love your teaching style. Also what is the type of the NKG spark plugs that you like so much? My car is a pre A 55 coupe. When I rebuilt the engine using the maestros books in 1983 I made a few mistakes that have led to hard to find oil leaks. Loved your method of finding leaks on the Beck Spyder. Thanks Jim

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James, That came from Harbor Freight believe it or not... It has been great! I prefer the Iridium or the Bosch Platinum. Others say the copper work better, but for me the Bosch Platinum give a smoother idle.

    Firstly, thank you so much for your work. I've enjoyed your videos for along time and was very excited to see this series as I own a 1964 356C. There are so few instructional videos our there for these cars and this is fantastic! Question regarding this specific video, I had always thought one need to set the gap on new spark plugs. Am I mistaken? Do these plugs come with the gaps already set for the specific vehicle? I'm no expert, so please educate me! Thanks again!

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I filmed a bit on the gap, but forgot to put it in?? Arg... I believe the gap is to be 0.020-0.024". I did gap these and they were closer to the 0.024" so I didn't adjust them. That tiny center pin is pretty delicate so be gentle even just testing them. Great catch!

  • @targabill
    @targabill 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video...But I think, could be wrong, when static timing you rotate until the points just OPEN not "close"as mentioned.. You get 6/12v on your meter when the points are opened.. You can use a screwdriver to open and close the points and watch the meter to verify this..

  • @randyallen2771
    @randyallen2771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really like this series, guess I'm partial to old bath tub Porsches. By the way, Champion makes a "spark plug lubricant" that is a thin dark liquid (applicator brush in the cap) that I suspect is moly or graphite. I use it for changing plugs in motor bikes' aluminum heads. Perhaps it would be more palatable to Porsche.
    Please let us know how the car runs on your test "tootle".

  • @88M5er
    @88M5er 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heidi, great teaching video. Thanks. I have a question about the spark plugs? I'm a gear head probably older than you. I have a few 80's and older BMW's and we have found the Iridium spark plugs to not work very well in older engines. They don't burn as completely. We much prefer the square tip electrode like a Bosch Platinum plug uses. I'm not arguing brand here just the design style. This style is what came in these engines including this 356 engine you are working on in this video. Just saying.........

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear ya... I've seen and heard that too... I did an A/B test with both types in our little 356 and in the 3.2 Carrera - both brand new and gapped sets and the new style plugs were noticably better in both cases... BUT of course use what you feel is the best for your car. This was just my experience. Thanks for adding your experience!

  • @BrianMiller

    Great video as always. I hope in the Zenith Carb video you chat a bit about Ethanol fuel, what it does to these older fuel systems, and what owners can do to help protect the carbs and fuel lines for driving and storage. I think this is one of the biggest challenges to keeping our older carbureted Porsches on the road.

    Have you had good luck with the iridium plugs on these older engines? I have not had good luck with anything but copper on my 83 911sc. Obviously the copper electrodes don’t last as long but in my humble opinion the copper plugs are the way to go.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only use the iridium and platinum plugs in these engines... In both the 356 and the 3.2 (and the 308) it made a noticeable difference stabilizing the idle. That's interesting you have had bad luck with them. But, you should totally use what you feel works the best. Thanks for the comment :)

    Is this all good for the '64 SC as well as the C? I replaced my '64 SC carbs with Weber 40 IDFs and the cylinders with 85 mm big bores. Does that effect the timing? It works great above 2,000 rpm but stalls out at 900 - 1,000 when coming to a stop. Just did these changes, so I'm not sure what I don't know.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a mixture issue... It may be that your idle jets are a bit small. Hard to say. I don't think it is a timing issue. Do you have access to a local shop that can tune it for you?

    hey i was curious how you got the front two spark plugs out my socket never wants to seat down in there. almost like the heat shield is in the way

      My socket has a universal joint actually built into the base. It works really well. It can be a little tricky to get a normal socket in the right spot.

      @@HeidiandFranny i just figured a normal socket wouldnt fit ill head to harbor freight in the morning

      @@HeidiandFranny So on the front two spark plugs there seems to be something in the way of getting the socket to even seat on the spark plug.

      It is an Actron CP7605. I did find one at Summit Racing: www.summitracing.com/parts/anm-cp7605

    Just a kiss of Anti-Seize!:) One of those bottles could probably last me about three lifetimes of auto repair and maintenance.Franny, its so nice to see you so well dressed working on your cars, necklace and earrings included! How do you remove a smudge of grease from your clothes if you occasionally get a bit on you?

      Funny, but the best I have found is the cheap clear hand soap from the dollar store. It works better than Goop, etc. and it smells nice!

    Excellent video as always, but Franny, your starting to sound like my mom. She can never remember what things are called anymore, so it's this guy, and this guy, and this guy, and.......I wish you'd call out all these various "this guy's" with their proper/correct name... that'd make it easier to follow what you're really doing..
